    There's very little value in the opinions of others. LOL. I'm physically disabled and I was told the only job I could do was be a receptionist and "you need a job where you can sit". I got that, but the sitting receptionist job came with an aside that I wasn't allowed to go to the bathroom until the end of my shift (because manning phones). Being physically disabled with nerve damage that was NOT going to work out. I now work from home as a graphic designer and it was 100% something I chose and went for. And I can pee when I need to.

    • @asadb1990
      @asadb1990 18 днів тому +4

      Some employers think a receptionist is a security guard at a post and can't go anywhere but that being said in north america, you can't be prevented from using the washroom

    • @CanadianChick811

      @@asadb1990 I think it's cause I typically need to use it more than a non disabled person would and it's hard to predict when. We had 4 hours shifts and a break after that. It was considered an essential job function so they wouldn't accommodate.

      @@CanadianChick811 regardless you might not be able to leave but someone needs to be able to cover while you use a bathroom. Im not disabled but i would work security where we couldn't leave the first desk. But i would just call another colleague on site to cover the 10-15min i went to the bathroom. I would call as needed. If they were a prick, i would call them more often. Employee rights are a thing.

      Funny how similar your story is to mine. I am also disabled and need a sit down job. Office work came naturally and I got a lot of experience with it, but the kicker came when I couldn't sit at a desk for more than 2 hours. I was unemployed for 8 years before finding another job (because you can't eat air) where yeah, it was a sit down job, but it was so stressful that I was having increased health issues because of it. I also went into graphic design because at that job, I realized I was essentially doing it (in addition to all the other admin assist. duties) and that that was the part I loved. I went back to school and graduated with a degree in graphic communications. Now I have a work from home job where I do some logistics for events, but also get to employ my design skills. And yeah, it's not as stressful and if I need a nap mid-day, I can just go to my room on my lunch break. lol

    When I was growing up, the only quadrant that was discussed was compensation and the content (mission, skillset, respect, prestige) of the work itself. After over a decade, I am realizing that most of the discomfort at work has come from ignoring the other three quadrants. In addition, my entire industry has shifted the "How." Such a timely video for someone about to turn 40.

    This can be a big question for people who are older. People these days are working longer than ever, and often that becomes a big question for someone over 55. The compensation being the biggest one.

    I doubt there are many non-unionized jobs that aren't fast-paced. Fast-paced is a euphemism for 'this is a job for 2-3-4 people, but we only want to pay for 1,' and I've never seen a company that doesn't do this.

    I think another thing that should be mentioned is that sometimes there is no perfect job. I've worked in academia, large companies small companies and now at a startup. Each one has pros and cons, but a good metric for me is to ask am I happy/ok 3 out of 5 days of the week or more? Are more of my days positive or negative?

Society is very job driven and has seemed so very rigid with your focus should be your job and you can have whatever is left outside of it as your personal life. I’m like this is ALL LIFE! I am very much interested in work-life balance and a leave it at the office- type person or at least any out of office work within structured work hours only.

    i turn 30 next year and i still dont know what i want to do, mostly bc i dont want to narrow down skills etc and stick myself in a field forever. im trying to either get at least ONE of my many qualifications to be at least somewhat relevant to the position.... but to also escape customer service with the general public forever bc i just dont work well in that environment. im so sick of reading job descriptions that are all "fastpaced"etc..... but it seems its all that im actually qualified for bc everything else needs extra quals when i CANT adding to my already huge 65.5k of student loans here in australia.
    im looking for another employer who'd be willing to pay for a cert iv or diploma in HR, since im trying to pivot into HR away from community/social/human services bc its far too stressful and draining.

    I was one of those "go to college right out of high school" kids. I thought I knew what I wanted to do (become a teacher) but quickly found it wouldn't work for me and my disability. I was kinda aimless for a while, doing mostly office work. I figured out what I want to do when I grow up....at age 36. The funny thing was, I'd been doing it all along. I just didn't realize it was a viable career path. Who would have thought there was a market for someone with a good eye for aesthetics in graphic design? Everyone has skills, even if they seem miniscule. It's figuring out what they are and ways they could be used that's the trick. I always liked designing posters or the yearbook layout, but it never hit me that it was anything more than a hobby.

    What sucks is when the "job that's right for you" or the team your placed on has a culture change without you realizing it. And then if you try heading off the problem to become one of the managers, you are also suddenly part of the culture that needs to push people into going above and beyond for the same compensation level. Just sucks it's all set up this way. They'd easily have everyone working China's 12 hr days and sleeping at work if they could.

Everyone thinks just because you have a degree youre entitled to some career salary office job especially today when degrees come a dime a dozen. The market speaks and so does timing.
