Tocchet is the new gold standard for coaches. (1) He's an ex-player -- fairly elite when he played, not a grinder -- (2) he's interested in bringing in more coaches than previous to help (Sedins, Foote, Gonchar, etc.,); (3) he works very closely with management in assessing players/trading for new players, etc., (4) progressive ideas, and fairly demanding. (5) expanded his office space so that more people could converse after games, and stuff like that. (6) brought players and mgt in weeks ahead of schedule to prepare for a good start. Good starts build morale and confidence. (7) he seems to have helped build a team that plays the same way whatever the score is. No defensive shell b.s., no panic.

Hey Sammy think of this, every major trade you wished Brad did this year....was for players from Calgary, you loved Tanev, you loved Zadorov, you like Markstrom and Andersson. Ever think Brad constructed that team? He is cooking, he signed a bunch of short contracts you can see he was buying time, and giving a few tests. He has the results and now some money so gotta give him time. In the end you want him to bring here what he brought to Calgary, which is recognition of his GM knowledge. He saw the team, met them, knew they could not win and needed to buy time to free contracts...Cook Tree cook, the temp is up

Kyper, I like you and I respect you as a journalist, but I find your today's comment regarding Sheldon Keefe and his couching a little off. You said , that the best coaching you've seen from Sheldon was last month or six weeks. Really? Does that last month of best coaching include letting the players play `everything on Matthews` chaotic style to help him to get 70 goals instead of trying to prepare the team for the Play offs? Does that last month of best coaching include allowing Matthews and Nylander chase a meaningless records last two (back - to - back) games of regular season against Florida and Tampa instead of letting them rest for the Play offs? Does that last month of best coaching include mishandling the goaltending situation at the end of the regular season and choosing the wrong starting goaltender for the series against the Bruins? Does that last month of best coaching include destroying his best line he had first three games by replacing Dewar with Robertson for game four? No, Kyper, Sheldon`s best coaching didn't last a month. It came after game four when they were down 3:1. Last three games, game 5, 6 and 7 and that didn't take more than a week. Before that, we saw usual Sheldon. Sheldon, that wasn't able to prepare his team for the Play offs.

@unimpressively_charming Unfortunately, Kyper is not on the spot here. Meaningless individual achievement is never bigger than team success. Let alone the fact, that there was no difference between 69 and 70 goals. No difference! And I can assure you, that those intelligent, successful NHL coaches would have never allowed that. They would have never let Matthew and Nylander go to Florida to play those two meaningless games.

Mistake and Sheldon’s approach to coaching the leafs was that he didn’t turn them into the defensive team that they should have until the final three games of the playoffs. Those games proof that he knows what he’s doing he just didn’t want them to play that way through the season or they weren’t willing to play that way through the season.. personally I think with all of his decision-making flaws that we’ve all witnessed he’s a pretty darn good coach and very successful one

1 for 21 on the power play in the playoffs and they were 25th in the league on the penalty kill. This isn’t a mistake it’s long overdue.

    • @dwightropp3014
      @dwightropp3014 12 днів тому

Yes, it was truly strange that he wasn't able to bring that high level of defensive play out of them until the last three games, which was impressive to see, even if it still wasn't enough.
But they were just that one goal from advancing to the next round, and if they would have done so, I'm curious, how far do you think they would have had to go before he would have been kept on as coach? They likely would have had to win that next round as well and get to at least the conference final for him to have kept his job. Would you agree?

With Coach Q, the questions are: what has he learned? Has he done the work? Has he spoken to Kyle Beach? If those questions can be answered, and answered well, then question then becomes how do we, as a culture and a society, view redemption? Do we really believe people can change? Do we believe in forgiveness and self improvement?
It’s a deep social question. If we want to be the type of society that people can make mistakes and learn and grow, and he has done the work, hire him.
If not, don’t. Not worth the headache.

Honestly, the way that Treliving likes building his teams by focusing on defense first, it seems right up Todd McLellan's alley, and he coaches with an extremely similar style but he is also really good when it comes to rush chances and offensive opportunities on 5 on 5 play so tbh.... If the Leafs mgmt really are genuine in wanting to win a Stanley Cup take a page from the history of the Montreal Canadiens from the year they upset the record wrecking Boston Bruins of 1970-71.
They hired a INTERIM coach named Al McNeil. His approach was only aimed at winning a Stanley Cup.
He would use the regular season to train his team to play on any line with any players.
If a player did not produce he was benched or saw few minutes.
He just wanted enough points to make the playoffs. He wanted to teach the players how to play through adversity. He wanted to make the players uncomfortable all season long, he wanted his players to grow grit. He had no fixed lines, he evaluated his players during the regular season.
He was honest with his players about his approach. He told them he only wanted to have the players win the Stanley Cup.
Montreal made one trade for Frank Mahovolich and brought up a young big goaltender from college who played 6 games allowing only 9 goals.
He never played the Orr led Bruins.
Montreal won the series against Boston in 7 games on the road.
Dryden won the Conn Symth trophy and a Stanley Cup.
The French press forced Al McNeil to be replaced because he didn't speak French even though he guided his team to a Cup.
This could never work in Toronto, the fans don't want to go through the pain of a so so season to win a Stanley Cup

In looking at the Leafs, there is no easy solution. A strong team with a strong core acquires the majority of the team via the draft, with a few pieces added via free agency or trade. Leafs have drafted 3 or 4 key players, but the rest of the team is via trade or free agency. They rely on free agents year after year trying to buy a cup - just can't be done. Sorry Leaf fans and media.

It is extremely funny that it is always the coach that has to pay for players who just aren't willing to make an effort other than to play a regular hockey game in any circumstances.
This applies everywhere not just here. Sometimes a change is good but if you look at things, it's all a merry go round. Coach gets fired, he is signed soon after to another.... and nothing changes 90% of the time. As key a coach is... it's the players who score goals.

Vancouver didn't play up to their usual standard that first game. They will improve. Goaltending and team defense -- and overall readiness -- was nowhere near the level they were at with Nashville. Their intensity, team press and work on faceoffs was excellent though, so that kind of made up for some of the failings. The idea that Edmonton lost rather Vancouver winning is a bit of a problem in this whole discussion. Edmonton got off to a poor start in October and November because they were vulnerable -- both emotionally and because of holes in their lineup. Although they played well enough to make the playoffs, they still have some of those vulnerabilities. Not at all a given that Edmonton is the favorite in this series.

If he has a lot or any input he should be a little bit more public facing. But instead he hides behind his GM and never speaks. Really baffling that he still has free reign to do whatever he wants and not have to answer for it.

There is a big possibility that the next coach fails too. Because they have too many, 4 big eggs, in the same 'basket'. Those players eat almost half of the cake. Thats far too much. Bad strategy choice too.
In play offs these four offensive players can be taken off. Anf after them they dont have anyone else left to make the necessary goals needed. Sorry.
And they have a headache, whome they choose. Risk exists.

They made no search efforts anytime before they fired Sheldon? Really? 😂
    That’s hilarious.
My guess is they had multiple conversations with multiple candidates during the regular season. Thats just a guess. I am first to admit, I know zip about running an NHL team. However, to think or believe the search for a new coach started after Sheldon was relieved of his coaching duties is naive, maybe even silly.
