It boggles one’s mind that the Rocket Richard Trophy winner Auston Matthews who is also a nominee for the Frank Selke Trophy (best defensive forward) didn’t also get nominated for the Hart Trophy over fourth place Lightning’s Nikita Kucherov!

CapFriendly shows Barkov $10mil Bob $10mil Tkachuk $9.5mil & Ekblad $7.5mil. Top 4 there are making $37 Mil so not far from the Leafs core four. Reinhardt is making $6.5Mil so really... very comparable to the Leafs Top 5. Big difference is the positions they all play, FLA has one top at every spot that makes a big difference on the ice.
Let's get straight, Matthews is the lottery win Toronto needed & still needs to go forward. How long did it take for any young team captain to win a cup? Years for Crosby, years for Ovechkin, & now years for McDavid who is on his way with Hyman. Matthews is next if Toronto head office can fix this now. Deep clean management offices & captaincy goes to Matthews 1st!

Crosby won a cup only his 4th year in the league... it didn't take this long for ovechkin and mcdavid's teams to at least win a couple of rounds in the playoffs lol. 1 series win in 8 years for matthews.
Crosby went from missing the playoffs in his first season, to making the playoffs in his second season, to making the Cup finals in his third season, and winning the Cup in his fourth season.
Ovechkin's Capitals won playoff rounds and usually just couldn't solve the Penguins or Rangers in the second round until 2018.
And the Oilers with McDavid have won playoff rounds and reached a conference final. This is their third straight season in which they've won their opening round.
None of these 3 compare to Matthews and the Leafs, who have 1 postseason series win in 8 seasons. The only other team that's made the playoffs in 8 straight seasons with just series win are the Buffalo Sabres from 1987-95.

Toronto management did not invest in Matthews by awarding him the captaincy, bad investment to start. Tavares got it & the rest is history. Can't underestimate what the C value means to a player or why he was disqualified from captaincy over 8 years from day 1.

you constantly hear the talking heads (aka: the voters) talk about how goals are the hardest and most important blah blah blah, but they ALMOST never vote that way. wiping your ass with 69 goals, over 100p without a nomination is theodore winning levels of bad.
Only 3 players in the history of the NHL had ever recorded 100 assists in a season, Orr, Gretzky, and Lemieux, the 3 best players in the history of hockey. So when 2 players match that, they’re clear Hart Trophy finalists. The last place open is between MacKinnon and Matthews. Matthews had 18 more goals than MacKinnon and yet somehow MacKinnon had 33 more points than MacKinnon (second most in the league). Which of those 2 do you think made his teammates better? Honestly, I don’t really think it matters who you’re taking in 3rd place; one of the guys who did something unfathomable should be winning the Hart.

Wouldn't surprise me to see Tavares leave Toronto if it helps the Leafs. Remember how he got there. Just put together a PowerPoint, remind him of the pajamas he wore as a kid, and explain to him that he is helping his hometown Toronto by leaving. The robotic leader and captain that he was and still is - may very well accept the programming message and leave.

No he’s not. Probably a good person but he’s way too awkward to lead this group, he can’t lead on the ice time and time again. He’s failed to step out of his comfort zone to protect his players and hasn’t came through to lead by example.

Why do you guys keep talking about getting rid of Marner like MLSE wants to? Everyone is emotional and playing armchair GM. Big picture is to coach and play to win 2-1 and 3-2 games. Play from game 1 in the regular season like it's the playoffs day-in day-out. Maybe add some pieces like a big shot right-handed D. Get a #1 for Reilly because Reilly is on the ice for seemingly every goal they give up. Keefe should go regardless if he's a good coach because his style and message is stale now to the players. STOP experimenting with lines all the way to the final weeks! Get a stable/ solid backup for Woll. ...and there's no offence when you can't break the puck out and ice it every 2 out of 3 attempts. The team is bigger and has bigger problems than 1 guy! Do you expect your all-world catcher to pitch a shutout (baseball analogy) because your star pitchers aren't available?...and then boo him out of town because he didn't pitch a complete game shutout? Matthews only generates about 33% to 50% assists compared to the top 25 NHL assist leaders. Sure he came close to but failed to score 70 goals this year. But his weakness as a playoff nobody at centre got exposed. My view is Matthews is an elite playoff winger & I wish him well. Didn’t he win a trophy which he deserved - for being the top goal scorer. That was what he earned.
4 points in 4 and 2/3 games while sick and injured in the playoffs is your idea of exposed? The guy is a selke nominee, the most goals in 30 years, and over 100 points. Not saying he should be a Hart candidate at all but your analysis is really bad.

Scoring the 69 goals was a special achievement- he got a trophy for it. But Matthews is a proven playoff disappointment. Best to move him to the wing. 😀

Playoff is what really matters, and Marner is 10.9m per empty points artist, like Huberdeau and Gaudreau, who plays with Matthews or at the very least - Tavares all the time and disappears comes April, and everybody in the league know that.
If Marner was such a gem one should pay premium for - why would the Leafs move him??
Imo, even Marner for future considerations would be a good trade for Toronto at this point. Should have done it after the Montreal series, or last year: Toronto with ROR (who they couldn't extend because of cap space), but no Marner would've been a better playoff team

That's the funny thing. I actually think Mathews deserves it more now, than he did the year he won it. 69 goal scoring, 100pts centre's, that are nominated for the selke, are almost nonexistent through history.
I don't think Matthews should be nominated for the Hart at all this year, but to say 'takes more than goals' is just stupid. The guy is a Selke nominee this year and probably deserves the Ted Lindsay for best player considering that and 69 goals/>100 points.

Kucherov and MacKinnon were leaders while also producing points. Leadership is what they have in spades over Matthews. They put their teams on their backs. Can you honestly say that Matthews has put the Leafs on his back for stretches where he just refused to let his team lose?
