Pretty incredible that Adrian managed to remain as charismatic and convincing as he had even all the while the combat music was looping in the background for as long as it had - fair to assume, I think, that this was wholly unexpected. That combined with that he'd managed to so nearly talk everyone into the custody of his agency makes me feel as though he was cheated out of the success he so masterfully earned... but such is so often the case in the World of Darkness, I suppose
Adrian came with the scariest weapon of all, a well developed explanation of why their greatest enemy was right (and the mental dexterity to deliver the pitch without losing them halfway through). I also am a bit disappointed that he didn't reap the success of that diplomatic checkmate, but it did kind of let us see two different battles for the same encounter. If the SI didn't refuse to let the four of them travel together, they'd all be in a car going where ever Adrian wanted them to be. We basically got to see the Kindred fully lose the encounter, then get a full second chance when it turned to violence at the last minute (unfortunately for them also mostly a loss, since Annabelle was completely taken).
Well "Masterfully" is relative here, outsmarting Erika at a game she never understood is like shooting fish in a barrel. In all those seasons she stayed an -actress- portraying a pre-set heap of characteristics that don't quite add up to a person. The game piece "Annabelle" never got a chance to evolve into a character, because Erika never evolved into a roleplayer who takes his job seriously being actor AND author of his role. So outplaying a static stagnant parody of a person with a well-known trigger is way too easy for a decent intrigue player who actually is roleplaying circles around her. Imagine if Annabelle was portrayed by anyone who understood that personalities can have multiple layers or someone who understood the Brujah Blood Flaw for that matter. Now that would be a hell of a scene to try and win for Adrian. But in his interactions with Xander we see that he would be ready for that. Sadly Erika is no match for him as she just isn't a roleplayer.
This episode once again proving what a freaking powerhouse Brennan Lee Mulligan is. I can't even believe how incredible his performance is, in so many ways. His calm, assured tone. His rhetorical brilliance. His unassailable conviction. I am absolutely terrified and awestruck at every word out of this man's mouth. 100/10, give this man all the awards.
Ok, speaking as a former greater LA area resident, Adrian's snarky "marquis of the Galleria" comment was *hilarious*. (You can probably tell from context clues, but if not... It's a mall. It's a mall that I shopped at a lot as a teenager, and the thought of vampires fighting over my childhood mall as a territory just makes me ridiculously happy.)
Brennan was a great choice to play Adrian. I can't think of any other actor who could naturally fall into such an eloquent and informative character in an improv setting
I think Adrian's performance is the kind of sickly sweet honest that would give a Dragon in Shadowrun a run for it's money in "Never make a deal with me".
That's the job of the Negotiator, to act like your friend and get you to step out from your fortified position. But as soon as you're out in the open, you get swarmed by police!
Well first they play shell games, moving them from community to community. Infecting them and harming their children, in the name of forgiveness and mercy. Good use of their tithes, sheltering monsters without any treatment other than praying away their wickedness, hoping jesus will forgive their sinful shit. But sure defrocking might also happen, probably only for that most unforgivable monstrous act, UNBELIEF.
Loved how Adrian manipulated Annabelle by basically saying her "Look, you can point us who you think we shouldn't harm". Annabelle loves her friends, Adrian knows it and gives her the chance to save them.
I love how Taliesin recoils at seeing the two lovebirds kiss even though at this point he's used to two full campaigns of party romances, because that's exactly what an edgy Brujah would do if they saw public displays of lovey-dovey emotion.
Kind of like Greg, getting neck-deep in Psycho Vampire Shit, and then any time Psycho Vampire Shit happens, it's the same mutter of "Jesus fucking Christ..."
No it's because it's super awkward to actually physically kiss in what's supposed to be a roleplay and nothing more. All three of the others are clearly so uncomfortable. If a male player instigated a kiss twice with the same married woman he'd be called out for being a sex pest, but Erika gets away with being a horny opportunist for some reason.
@@apollo4519 when they say "I slap him in the face" they don't actually get up and slap the other player. It's a game for using your imagination. Making out at the table is weird and the fact Erika has initiated it with Marisha twice says more about her attraction to the player than it does to her character being attracted to Marisha. Especially as she tried "romancing" marishas character again in campaign 3 of critical role.
I have even forgotten that Adrian is a fucking psycho and then he CHANGES his whole poise and quickly says «torch the monster, stake the girls». Fucking hell, Brennan is SO, SO great at acting
@@quazillionaire No one on Earth reads comments when they are trying to avoid spoilers, my friend. Don't worry though, 90% of the greatness of this episode is all the regular dialogue before the climactic moments. And the best part is Ellenore's facial reactions as it all happens.
The fact that the boardroom talk between Adrian and Annabelle about the Anarchs and Camarilla is happening at the same as the college protest demanding "we want change" is a nice bit of thematic work.
Seeing Erika Ishii play on Dimension 20: Escape from the Blood Keep (with Brennan as DM), led me here to see how this show was. Here I am, 5 seasons later and they come together. Lol Man I heard Brennan's voice last episode and was immediately excited for he would bring. He did not disappoint. You could tell that the conversation was not supposed to go that way, Brennan is just that charismatic and great at improv. Great episode, easily my favorite one.
Ventrue + Torrie = Instant Violence, several kills Nosferatu + Tremere bunch = Instant Violence, several kills Gangrel + 2x Brujah = Talks about it, cooperates and two run away, zero kills :D
Given the first 3 interactions are with established kindred and this one is with a relative youngling and is their intended target: the first 3 was leverage by force to have annabelle be more agreeable to talk
Considering that Jasper appears to be embraced 2 to 3 years ahead of Annabelle, and Victor and Nelly not much longer, with some years having past, I don't see them as that more etablished. Plus, I'll guess that Carver is older as the whole coterie combined ^^;
@@JenniferFuss true though I consider the rest established as they already are in the flow of the world of darkness while annabelle is still quite a greenhorn especially in the societal/political front (even after 5 seasons)
I really like the actor that played Adrian he really sold me on the Inquisition character I did not expect to like a character from that fraction :D great job. I understand that Eli would go but I am shocked that Carver would go along with it.
Brennan Lee Mulligan is probably my favorite performer on the scene right now, and highly recommend basically anything he's in. I'm actually fully new to LA by Night and Vampire, having watching the first 3 episodes of season five specifically because I heard Brennan featured as a character in this one (I didn't want to go in too spoiled, but also wasn't ready to sign up for four full earlier seasons yet). I gotta say, I've certainly been enjoying LA by Night so far, and am excited to see how this seasons concludes!
Amazing performance Brennan! *some spoilers* I love the introduction of a "true inquisitor" into the mix. Someone bolstered by powers of faith and extensive knowledge of kindred. Brennan really brought the authentic belief to the character, great work!
He also does some very key. When Carver relents so does he. Rather than press his attack when Carver is stunned by the true faith attack he lets Carver soak in the ramifications of what an extended fight with Adrian would entail then calmly and politely presents the Gladius's proposition. There is a second thing of note here as well. The SI wanted Annabelle or so it seemed. It is not expressly said, it could be Eleanore. Adrians order Torch the monster (obv Carver as indicated by the second part) stake the girls. This is after being told they were only expecting to take one of them and which one is not explicitly indicated. There is some evidence that it is Annabelle because they try to separate her from the rest but this is not a solid declaration.
@@duncanrae466 I think a key part may be the earlier mention of "a connection helps (with not relenting to a bestial side)". If the true intent is to have Annabelle be what adrian claimed, they might need both girls.
What an amazing episode. I love the way the inquisitor was introduced. His talk persuaded the dead man to follow him. There were emotional dialogues, creative phrases, and that ending when the monsters shed their masks. Greetings from Polish Vamili
While I have enjoyed Erika's rp of Annabelle, I am glad Ellenore gave her tough love in regards to some of her choices. She may be trying to do at least what she thinks is the right thing, but in terms of morality level she is as much in the grey as the rest of her former coterie. Also, having only seen Brennan in short youtube clips I enjoyed seeing him as Adrian in this episode
Okay, so quick breakdown of Brennan. I'm sure that you've seen clips of Dimension 20 (which does have two full seasons and a mini season on their channel free to the public). What you may not have seen are his many sketches on College Humor for example. He's also on several other TTRPGs, mostly as a guest. If you search his name, a fairly extensive playlist comes up. However, four of my favorite appearances of his are the cereal episode of Table Pop on Dorkly, his appearance on Drawfee, his appearance on One on One Shots with B Dave Walters, and his appearance on The Neptune Society for the Stream of Blood.
Adrian's line of shit was perfect for Annabelle. He hit her right in the vanity: "You are so special, you have a heart of gold, people instinctively follow you because your heart is pure, you can be SAVED!!!" All that was missing was the question "Have you taken the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal savior?" I'm surprised Ellinore and Carver let him get away with that. Carver, especially, was pretty passive for most of the episode. At least Ellinore made some feeble objections. It's also interesting that, even though Carver took Annabelle on a tour of Mid America specifically to put her in situations where she'd have to kill to survive, she apparently preserved her record of not killing anyone herself, while facilitating others to do her dirty work for her. The late Charles Manson would approve.
I think it was also a weak spot for Annabelle because she is scared of losing her humanity. He's offering her a way out. We all know that hope can be the most dangerous and delusional emotion.
The casting choice for Adrian was *inspired* :D Holy shit, they picked the best guy for this role, a mortal with True Faith on his side was the most dangerous being in the room o_O He's so good at this it beggars belief. Absolutely amazing episode. I could watch it at least two or three more times.
I really liked Ellenore in this episode. The voice of pragmatism to Annabelle's idealism. I really did not miss Annabelle's rants, but Ellenore really brought a much needed dose of reality to the table. Taliesin was also perfect as Carver, as always, and Adrian was pretty awesome in his own right. Overall, great episode.
Tbh, Annabelle never really had any consequences that made her grow after she was embraced. Her idealistic rants came from a place of not being removed from her humanity and trying to enforce her human ideals on to monsters. That being said I think Annabelle is a good example of what happens when you cling to your humanity too aggressively and adds an interesting dynamic to the group.
Actually that is very true for annabelle she hasn’t really changed much, sure she’s undead and has enhanced powers but she’s still the same as she was mortal
Yeah, Ellenore is obviously the functional one in the relationship. Kinda wish she could've been here sooner, her dynamic with Annabelle is so intelligent and they compliment each other super well as characters. Also......Gayyyyyyyy
Can I just point out that in Thursday by Night, the VtM two shot that Tal story told for, it was heavily implied that Marisha was playing a Gangrel and now years later Marisha is playing Elle who is also Gangrel. I often forget how strong an eldritch entity Tal is haha
Great episode! The only problem I had with it was the ending. Not that I don't agree with it and thought it was good, it just seemed tactically unsound. Whomever these higher ups are should allow the agent in the field to make command decisions. Changing the orders in the middle of an op is insane. It just seems it would be easier to get them together willingly, move them to a safer, less public location where you can control everything, and then eliminate the spares. Adrian had control of the situation and had eyes on. The higher ups made a mistake and it could have cost them. Operational awareness is important...🙂
What an amazing episode! Taliesin and Brennan were so good, the relationship convo was strange but still fun (I thought they were breaking up then they're holding hands I'm like huh?). I love that I still don't know whether Adrian was being honest about anything or everything.
After all that role play and how well Adrain did at convincing them I really wish that had worked. And I can only hope that if the Second Inquisition shows up in the campaign I'm playing in they're as intelligent and persuasive as this. Because that would make for one hell of a game and one hell of a coterie conflict.

I have one other small thing I noticed- it’s supposed to be late at night - Adrian’s a normal human, it’s late for him… I feel like Brennan’s coffee isn’t just the out of character constant coffee people who’ve watched him work know he always has, it feels like *in character* he’s needing caffeine to stay up for this. He managed to make his beverage of choice a character bit, and I love that.
@@TORBIN0 Celestial Chorus aren't generally considered witches, though; they exist within the church hierarchy and tend to have True Faith. Edit: SOME exist within church hierarchy. Not all.
"For miracles to happen, somebody's gotta bleed." Best line. This episode turned itself around! Hopefully Ellenore gets torched and it plunges Annabelle into actually being a vampire.
"Actually becoming a vampire?" At what humanity score does that happen? 6 4 2? I'm curious at which point the desperate quest to cling to mortal values becomes a shackle as opposed to one of the keystone features of one afflicted by The Beast?
Brennan just knocked it out of the park. I found myself liking Adrian too, even though I knew he would turn on them at some point. And Adrian was totally okay (unless he was bluffing) with Annabelle and Ellenore being girlfriends, that was surprising from a Catholic former priest.
We should be getting more By Night books after the SI one. Those are the best way to facilitate newcomers to start up a Chronicle that isn't based on Chicago. A Los Angeles one could be a good way of starting that, for sure.
This story teller also ran Seattle by night. It was a shorter game but a lot of fun to see. It was also a good example of how to play with an appropriate amount of comedy.

I love the Chicago by Night sourcebook but I do agree that more books in that vain would be really cool. I'd love something like Miami by night, or maybe even a book section that includes resources for converting a real city into a VtM setting?
Berkeley by night is a creepy scenario shaped by local players over about a decade and a half. Here, all supernatural activity is overseen by the awakened, who seem to flock in the area, due in no small part to the convergence of multiple strong ley lines that culminate in a transdimensional flecture that requires constant monitoring.
I am so glad to see Annabelle played in a way that takes into account everything that has occurred and what she has seen.

Omg, I'm only 13 minutes in and every single thing that came out of Taliesin's mouth was pure gold.
Right?
This is normal, but tonight was particularly good.
Verbal gold
One walks in the Love of Christ... but not as a fool. AMAZING
"Got it daddy-o"
"Thank you, babydoll"
I'm sorry, that's just so wholesome! I'm so sad I didn't get to see them interact after this one episode!
Ellenore: "How does the Catholic Church treat its monsters?"
Adrian: "They defrock and excommunicate them. You know, exactly what they did with me."
I loved Carver's "no, stop, don't" callback to his first appearance in LABN.
That’s his kid tho lol
Kind of like Greg, getting neck-deep in Psycho Vampire Shit, and then any time Psycho Vampire Shit happens, it's the same mutter of "Jesus fucking Christ..."
No it's because it's super awkward to actually physically kiss in what's supposed to be a roleplay and nothing more. All three of the others are clearly so uncomfortable. If a male player instigated a kiss twice with the same married woman he'd be called out for being a sex pest, but Erika gets away with being a horny opportunist for some reason.
@@0saintclark0 ever heard of actors?? Plenty of married actors who kiss people that aren't their spouse lmaoo
Not even a minute in and I can HEAR the creaking of leather, this is gonna be great.
I have even forgotten that Adrian is a fucking psycho and then he CHANGES his whole poise and quickly says «torch the monster, stake the girls». Fucking hell, Brennan is SO, SO great at acting
Why is this massive spoiler at the top of the comments... Kinda frustrating.
@@quazillionaire There always are. Best to not read any comments until the end of the video (I made the same mistake).
What a great performance!
So happy to see Taliesin and marisha appearing in this episode. Taliesin is one of my favorites just because of how chaotic he is.
Seeing Erika Ishii play on Dimension 20: Escape from the Blood Keep (with Brennan as DM), led me here to see how this show was. Here I am, 5 seasons later and they come together. Lol
Man I heard Brennan's voice last episode and was immediately excited for he would bring. He did not disappoint.
You could tell that the conversation was not supposed to go that way, Brennan is just that charismatic and great at improv.
Great episode, easily my favorite one.
Everybody did magnificently, but Adrian owned this episode
Ventrue + Torrie = Instant Violence, several kills
Nosferatu + Tremere bunch = Instant Violence, several kills
Gangrel + 2x Brujah = Talks about it, cooperates and two run away, zero kills
:D
Given the first 3 interactions are with established kindred and this one is with a relative youngling and is their intended target: the first 3 was leverage by force to have annabelle be more agreeable to talk
Considering that Jasper appears to be embraced 2 to 3 years ahead of Annabelle, and Victor and Nelly not much longer, with some years having past, I don't see them as that more etablished.
Plus, I'll guess that Carver is older as the whole coterie combined ^^;
Ahaha 😆 that IS funny 😆
@@JenniferFuss true though I consider the rest established as they already are in the flow of the world of darkness while annabelle is still quite a greenhorn especially in the societal/political front (even after 5 seasons)
@@JenniferFuss Depends on whether you consider Eva part of the coterie or not, as she was embraced 1969-ish.
Yo, the amount of hype when Adrian showed was massive.
So great to see more people joining the cast.
I AM SO F****** ENTERTAINED RIGHT NOW!
Amazing performance Brennan! *some spoilers*
I love the introduction of a "true inquisitor" into the mix. Someone bolstered by powers of faith and extensive knowledge of kindred. Brennan really brought the authentic belief to the character, great work!
The term "Willworker" was dropped.
If the true intent is to have Annabelle be what adrian claimed, they might need both girls.
brennan is just literally perfect in what ever he plays and its mmmmmm cheffs kiss my fav
He hit her right in the vanity: "You are so special, you have a heart of gold, people instinctively follow you because your heart is pure, you can be SAVED!!!"
All that was missing was the question "Have you taken the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal savior?"
I'm surprised Ellinore and Carver let him get away with that.
I think this was the case of both NPCs taking the backseat for the PC to shine and make her own choice
Carver, while blinking in pain: "We're listening!"
Carver's Beast:. DUFUQJUSTHAPPENOWFUCKINGDAMNIT
As a manly man with manly thoughts I can confidently say that I've fallen in love with Brennan. Damned sexy priests

Brennan plays a religious man so damn well it's terrifying. Well done sir!!!
The casting choice for Adrian was *inspired* :D Holy shit, they picked the best guy for this role, a mortal with True Faith on his side was the most dangerous being in the room o_O
He's so good at this it beggars belief.
I love Annabelle rants, they are so inflamatory and idealistic, oh, to be young again...
Kinda disappointed ellenore got sidelined so much, I feel like we missed a whole arc, and honestly she's a little more interesting than mark
World of Darkness, Critical Role, Geek and Sundry, and Collegehumor collide and I can't even
Can I just point out that in Thursday by Night, the VtM two shot that Tal story told for, it was heavily implied that Marisha was playing a Gangrel and now years later Marisha is playing Elle who is also Gangrel.
I often forget how strong an eldritch entity Tal is haha
5 of the best roleplayers in one room 🤩
so good! this might be my favorite episode of the chronicle! just an incredible performance by Adrian. thanks for this incredible gift!
Can we all take a moment to recognize how amazing Taliesin and Brennan are.
Right? It makes you wonder why that happened? I recommend re-watching the stinger at the end of episode 1, and stay tuned....
Giving the vamps like three rounds before Adruan could act was a bit of a tough situation tactically. Good writing though.
What an amazing episode! Taliesin and Brennan were so good, the relationship convo was strange but still fun (I thought they were breaking up then they're holding hands I'm like huh?). I love that I still don't know whether Adrian was being honest about anything or everything.
Talisans face when annabelle ellenore praten is so wholesome he loves this game and the roleplay that it brings.
After all that role play and how well Adrain did at convincing them I really wish that had worked. And I can only hope that if the Second Inquisition shows up in the campaign I'm playing in they're as intelligent and persuasive as this. Because that would make for one hell of a game and one hell of a coterie conflict.
Now we just need CR to bring Brennan on as a guest.
And Matt Mercer on LA by night.
@@edwardfrench9368 Wouldn't that be something. 😃

Interesting that Adrian refers to himself as a "Will-worker"....a phrase most commonly used by Mages. I know this is way out there, but could this guy be Celestial Chorus, & not merely a regular Inquisitor?

Thank God Carver is there to counteract Annabelle's naiveté.
oh the Naiveté that got her stakes? yup what a dumb decision ...
if she lives its pure plot armor on Jason's side. its completely irrational that the SI would let a staked vamp live
@@danaholland6686 Of course she'll live, she has "main character"-tier plot armor. Any normal character would've been executed in Season 1.

@@danaholland6686 Maybe Adrian is one of those Inquisitors who lives on vamp blood. There's been a half-a-dozen or so in canon.
I love when Annabelle "vampsplains"
Well that was a fricking turn in the last 10 minutes or so. Omg so tense
Willworker is another term for mage in this setting. Is Adrian a mage, possibly Celestial Chorus?
I was thinking that!
It's possible that he's a hunter blessed with true faith. I doubt that the Second Inquisition would have a "witch" among them.
@@TORBIN0 Celestial Chorus aren't generally considered witches, though; they exist within the church hierarchy and tend to have True Faith.

In the spirit of Grace, Peace and Humility, we do roll deep.
Brennan just knocked it out of the park. I found myself liking Adrian too, even though I knew he would turn on them at some point. And Adrian was totally okay (unless he was bluffing) with Annabelle and Ellenore being girlfriends, that was surprising from a Catholic former priest.
i think the prejudicial hostility from Adrian already capped when he knows they are 'monsters' that the relationship aspect seems tame in contrast
In his mind they are monsters. Their sexual deviance (in his mind that is) does not add or subtract to that as they are already damned.
I think there has been talk of an LA By Night Book but Im not sure if I am remembering things correctly
Would be interesting to run or play a campaign where folks play the SI, instead of vamps.
Damn, great job all. I am truly loving this storyline. It involves so many major players in a way that is forbidden in small round table RP. This shit is canon and it’s good. And I am glad to finally see some comeuppance.
Speaking as someone who's only gotten into Vampire in the past like 6 months, I did really enjoy watching the LA by Night series. I love the character acting, it's something I really enjoyed. I love the Chicago by Night sourcebook but I do agree that more books in that vain would be really cool. I'd love something like Miami by night, or maybe even a book section that includes resources for converting a real city into a VtM setting?
Thanks for joining us, welcome to the Vamily! :)
I think Erika is a great roleplayer but I used to get so frustrated how she was always acting like she had just been turned. Experienced Annabelle is much cooler than wide eyed Annabelle
