  • This video is about the historic town of Mahabalipuram(Mamallapuram) ,which is about 40 kms from Chennai and 100 Kms from Puducherry.
The History of Mahabalipuram is shrouded in Mystery . This place was considered to be the Land of Seven Pagodas during the ancient times. The city , is believed to have been destroyed by massive floods before 10000 years.
Krishna's butter ball defies all the laws of gravity. The great Raja Raja Chola got inspired of this never falling rock and thus a tradition was developed from here to make mud dolls that never fall down. And these are the world famous Tanjore Dolls, or Thanajur bommai in Tamil.
It weighs over 250 tons and miraculously stands on an extremely small, slippery area of a hill.
Pallava King Narasimhavarman made the first attempt to remove the rock believing that this heavenly rock should not be touched by sculptures , could not move this rock at all.
In 1908, Arthur Lawley who was the Governor of Madras, considered the boulder to be too dangerous to have around. Fearing that it would slide of the hill at any time, he ordered it to be moved with help of seven elephants, which also failed miserably.
Many of the sculptures are carved out of Monolithic Rocks.
The Shore temple is the only Pagoda which has survived the massive floods . Tourists and Locals saw the glimpses of a destroyed temple and a town underneath the sea during the 2004 Tsunami.
