Rajasthan's best kept secret: Chaturmukh Temple

  • In the remote forests of the Aravalli hills stands the majestic Chaturmukh Jain temple at Ranakpur-one of India’s finest architectural masterpieces. Built over fifty years and featuring 1,444 intricately carved marble pillars, this stunning temple is a symbol of artistic brilliance and spiritual devotion. Commissioned by the minister Dharnashah in 1439, and designed by the humble architect Deepak, this temple is dedicated to Lord Adinath, the first Jain Tirthankara.
Despite its reputation for perfection, a single pillar in the temple stands crooked-deliberately placed as a reminder of human imperfection. This unique touch adds a layer of mystique to the Chaturmukh temple, suggesting that even the most exquisite works of art have their flaws. The temple’s flawless marble surfaces, exquisite light play, and elaborate carvings have made it one of the most awe-inspiring structures of its time.
This “jewel in the jungle” pioneered the use of white marble, making it a timeless testament to human skill, creativity, and humility.

@@D__Ujjwal - I sure hope the Indian government selects competent artists to do the renovation work at the Angkor Wat and does not involve the Archeological Survey of India at all. You only have to check out the renovation work they did on the Sun Temple in Korank, Odisha - it's a mess! The restoration of historical relics requires experts and artists with excellent aesthetics and skills. The Cambodian authorities must think deep and only select the most competent experts from the international scene to do the work.

I wonder why do people bring their religion everywhere..... I enjoyed a lot while my friend felt weird walking into a Jain temple... Don't know the reason why these kind of temples aren't mentioned in our Textbooks!
But Tombs are glorified where the rulers cut the hands of sculptors!!

    British rule
Historians estimate that between 30,000 and 60,000 Hindu temples were destroyed during British rule. These acts were often motivated by a desire to weaken Indian culture and suppress religious practices.
    Muslim rule
Hindutva ideologues estimate that 60,000 temples were demolished under Muslim rule in India. However, some say that the precise number of temples desecrated can never be known.
    Mughal rule
Former Karnataka minister KS Eshwarappa claimed that the Mughals destroyed 36,000 temples during their reign

In reality Hindus were not supposed to make temple . Vedic hymns Hindus use to do yagyas only.
Temple building traditions were started by Sharmanas.
But due to their power ful philosophy Hindu started competiting them and also started building temples. Originally Tamilnadu Karnataka, Andra was also 👍 nayed by shramans .

@Chen-gl9dude Hinduism is the child of Vedic culture and Shramana. Shramanas agreed to the authority of Vedas this resulted in present day Hinduism. Shramanas who didn't agree the authority of Vedas gave rise to Jainism and Buddhism.

We are our own temples we create from the inner thoughts of creativity. To say one could not breath and live and be fruitful then we would not have airplanes. Vision is the process to creativity to bring forth life.

    Admirable Rajasthan!
In todays world the craftsmen of the most intricate carvings could be terminated!
    For being "God like" !
The imperfection of the skewed pillar could have been the arresting of the work, so that the powers could claim the laurels for entirety of the scheme!
Projecting the imperfection as a humble spiritual exercise, seems manipulation of the truth, but in fact the failure of the claimant to have been the creative talent!
