I appreciate seeing this because it makes clear what he was going through at the beginning of the slow decline. This isn't the same guy from the previous year but it doesn't change the fact that he was a musical genius.
I really appreciate seeing this footage. Rather than take away from the idea that is "Jaco," it shows how truly miraculous this intensely human creature was. How much more amazing, complicated and fascinating it is to know that the source of such brilliant, yet-to-be-repeated innovations emerged from this sweet, narcissistic, macho, sensitive, shit-talking, mother-loving, guilty-conscienced Catholic kid from from the streets of South Florida? The alchemy of his life is truly awe-inspiring.
I used to think it was unethical for this video to be up there. I still think so sometimes. But I realized it was a lot of stigma that made me feel that way. This video is positive when you laugh with Jaco and respect what you see. Be humbled this material is public. If you laugh at him and make a fool of him that's just not the right way to look at it. This is just one part of Jaco's mercurial personality. He could be very composed, highly intelligent and humble just as well. A kind and sensitive person. In this day and age this may not have happened, because facilities and understanding of mental health is much better. Bach, Stravinsky, Paganini, Jamerson, The Beatles, Henry Mancini, Mingus.. Jaco. People need to know this 😅 Over twenty years my understanding of his work has been growing and surprising me. I think it was Wayne Shorter who said his musical gift to the world was a "constant".
jaco is and always be the very very best, bassist, composer, and player ever! others may come but never can they top this. to see this video is a real insight for those of us that love the man and wish they could have met him, studied under him, and attained his level on their bass. thanks for posting these. i can feel like i hung out with him and know he would be cool as shit unlike many of the "Great" bassists of today that i have met that tuned out to be such assholes id never buy another cd!
now we're back to no shirt, when in part 2 he had just put a shirt or two on.. he would've been fun to hang out with-and i guarantee he doesn't mind this being on here- wherever he is tonight! love ya,man! i' guess now that after i'm gone,i have no right to complain if some videos of me make it online-haha-
Yeah. alot of people were. Some folks just got straight up tired of Jaco's antics. If you read Milkowski's "Jaco", you'll see that alot of the folks who were helping him out were very optomistic about Jaco's return to fame, and were more than happy to help him get back... then their hopes were crashed after a drink. This happened over and over and over....
I don't think these kind of personal stuff should be up on UA-cam or anywhere online for that matter. This is a perfect example of why you have to watch out and carefully screen what you are willing to let people record on film. Even back then... We are all influenced by Jaco and he was clearly one of the greatest and I am SURE if Jaco was alive today, he wouldn't have wanted this shit to be online. What a shame...
thanks for that, most people did not understand why i decided after so my years to put this video out. many were against it, just read the comments on the early post. thanks the jazzmanstore.
to me , this seems like any other afternoon from the 80s or 90s so dont get weird . he seems happy with his mates having a drink . i was doing loads worse at 19years old in 86 .
If you read Milkowski's book, you'll see that many hand's were extended to Jaco in those dark years and he sabotaged every chance he had to restart his career. His family and friends were there for him but, as you can see in these videos, he does things his own way. As Peter Erskine's father, a psychologist said at the time, Jaco's first step is admitting he had a problem but, as "low" as Jaco got, he always thought he was just fine. Well, I'm just giving my take from the book. . .
I've been in the company of many musicians in this state. He's just drunk, not looking particularly crazy but you can see that he can't stay still. He keeps mentioning his children. I think he suffered a lot because he couldn't be with them😪
At the end of the day, regardless of his undeniable, huge musical talent jaco was human after all. He had his light side which was the music, and his dark which were his personal demons. We never find it comfortable to realise our idols are as fallible as the rest of us.
Can't judge it too harsh, still a young guy, in a successful band, played with successful musicians and probably bought his own house, living it up and a pretty normal response.... But his excsesses mixed with bi polar issues caught up with him.
Hard to believe that drunk fella was the greatest bass player ever, reminds me to Syd Barrett after hiw breakdown, but still music's inmortal, long live Jaco the best way he was!
I've read Milkowski's book several years ago so I don't need this vid to "learn" something about Jaco's disease...I think the music he has recorded between '76 & '80 gives us a much better view of his true personality because it was before he had troubles in his personal life which led him to drink & do drugs(manic depression and bi-polar disorder are activated and aggravated by alcool & drugs;I've got friends who've been through the same thing and no body wants to see vids of 'em like that)
jaco always said, a good musician doesn't barrow he steals and jaco stole from the best black masters of rock blues and jazz. but unlike other famous white jazz and blues and rock musicians that steal and don't give the credit or lift up there black counter part jaco always did.
I appreciate seeing this because it makes clear what he was going through at the beginning of the slow decline. This isn't the same guy from the previous year but it doesn't change the fact that he was a musical genius.
I had a friend who acted just like Jaco. I've been that guy sitting at the bar in the corner.

it's called Invitation 1982. the first time i heard it, was when i filmed him at the black night club called the sun set lounge in west palm beach.
That's so funny when he forgets he's talking to someone on the phone.😂

thanks man. put some more if you can.
yes i was, and i brought the camera man there, jaco told me to come over.

He did not do drugs until his first wife dumped him. She couldnot stand he was on the road all the time.
Gosh, I would hold onto him real tight! I love him so much.😊
jaco always said, he stole from the best black masters of jazz blues rock soul and country.
The GG Allin of Jazz

WTHFX, that's a really nice comment you made. Well said
...this is part 1 over again... different mixes I think...
For ever the best :))
yes, he was funny and unpredictable that's why he was so talented.

The master
that was during the word of mouth album.
What year was this? Was this before he sobered up in 1986 and back home or was this when he was in New York in 1984?
I think this is in 1982 or so. And it looks like it was filmed in FLA
jaco always said, a good musician doesn't barrow he steals and jaco stole from the best black masters of rock blues and jazz. but unlike other famous white jazz and blues and rock musicians that steal and don't give the credit or lift up there black counter part jaco always did.
I think they were sick of his shit
I am sad. Still.
this is so rare !! put all your videos you have on this here =)
@A2KID420 Jaco was a manic depressive, extreme highs and lows

Jazzman this may have been answered. Were you there that night during this documentary? was this filmed at Jaco's house?

What's the point of posting(& watching) such a thing?
