Hi Brandon! Here’s my general comment to your channel: Extremely useful! I both own an older Evinrude and occationally get assigned one at work. You have helped both me and customers breathe new life into these legendary engines. Thanks a whole lot and greetings from Sweden!
Nicely done! My motor vibrated off of the transom and swam about 5 circles underwater (cables all held). The actual Engineer-friend of mine that gave the boat to me (VERY kind), had locked the hand fasteners, but did not through-bolt the motor. Long story short, miraculously, the motor started that day--it is the 1985 version of yours, looks JUST like it--and is running PRETTY darn well but the starter is starting to "screech" a bit. This video helped me locate my equipment and also to potentially tease it out if and when it--the starter--truly gives up the ghost! Thanks buddy!
I just used a bit of fencing wire. Held it with vice grips but it went red hot in about 3 seconds. But I’ll try that in the morning. Kinda need it to go, it was in salt water today.
Hi! Amazing video! My pinion will rise and engage with the flywheel but it would not spin, what could be wrong? It was running perfectly last week but it happened when I tried to start it up in my backyard to winterize it. What could be wrong? Thanks!
I took my starter into a part store to have it checked, they said it was bad. I took it home and cleaned it up and used graphite spray for lubricant. Reinstalled and now the starter is trying to turn it over. I did this that Mr. Reynolds points out by taking my right side hot wire on solenoid and touched the left and it sparked, so I had to order a new solenoid installed it and now it's still not turning over. I just ordered a new starter so I hope that helps. Just sucks having to order parts when I have a old motor. 1991 25 HP Johnson. I did additionally find a blown fuse that runs from a overheating sensor ( I assume) on the back of the rear of the engine with the water drain tube coming out. No luck with changing that either so now I'm just waiting on a new starter, but thank you for the great videos. Gives a novice tinkerer a chance at owning a functioning boat. I just didn't realize how much time and money an old boat would take to make functionable and safe for my family.
@@papa4988 you think it sucks ordering parts for an old motor?!? What really sucks is ordering parts for a new motor that shouldn't need anything because it's still new! WIth old motors it's to be expected.
Greetings!! Your Videos are helpful. Question: I bought a 1980 15hp Johnson Outboard; its in great shape. Can i install an electric start motor? if so...Where would I find one, and what other parts would i need? Thanks Scott
With some of my videos being 40 minuets long, I don't believe I do; but then I watch other youtube videos, and its 30 minuets of them driving around and going grocery shopping before getting to the point.
hi just have a question so ill take off the positive wire and touch the negative wire which is attached to the solenoid? just wanted to double check thanks
Lol.. Your video is funny, I love it. I have a 40 Johnson motor from the 60's. I kept trying to start it at the dock and it kept wanting to turn over. But my dumbass, never hooked up the gas line to the engine. And now all I'm getting is a click sound. I probably ruined the starter or solenoid trying to start it over and over. I was my first time out since winter and I got ahead of my self in excitement. Didn't check everything beforehand lol... I'm not sure how to use the multimeter or settings to put it on.
Great video. Any reason why my starter is starting to spin and not push the sprocket up to turn the motor over? I had to manually spin it up into position then start it and it would work but after 2 times of restarting it would spin but not engage. Any solutions? (70 HP Force motor)
I have the same issue that you’re having, starter runs but sprocket won’t go up to fire up the engine,I have ordered a new starter and will see if that fixes the problem
Using a multimeter I have power to the solenoid. Doesn’t make a sound when I try and start it. Either power doesn’t run to the starter from the solenoid or the starters not working. Or even the ignition switch is done! Don’t have a clue yet
well you can use a screw driver to jump the power from the positive battery to the solenoid yellow wire; if it turns you know its a wiring issue. Could he the ignition switch, neutral switch, or youre not even in neutral. if it doent do anything, its the solenoid or the starter.
I’ve been able to get the solenoid to click, and just did your test as shown in the video and I could’ve gotten it to start up. Is this a wiring issue or does this mean the solenoid is bad?
@@BrandonsGarage what else could it be I replaced stator, battery rectifier, switch pack, spark plugs? I took off kill switch wire yellow n black what else could it be?
S a very short video but it was all I needed to fix my boat I had no idea why it wouldn't start turn the key hear a click that's it well after watching this turns out my solenoid is bad so thank you that I didnt have to watch a 30 minute video you git straight to the point thank you

When I turn my ignition key I get the same clicking noise from solenoid. However when I run a heavy jumper from post to post as you did I get nothing! Can you or anyone help; thanks!!
I’m having the same issue and to me it sounds like a faulty wire connection or starter relay. I’m still learning what all this means so I could be wrong
My starter was good but one of the internal connections was weak! Cleaned it up then discovered the solenoid was bad! Changed it out and $65 later all is good!
New an old battery starter will jump to flywheel but dont have enough ass to turn motor over . rope will start it . took starter off an touch + an - off battery it spins just wont turn motor is the a weak starter

And to think I got my multimeter out to watch this!
Good man for sharing the knowledge 🤙

Great shortcut. Most people would maybe try an ohm test first, I like your method, no doubt in the diagnosis.
Absolutely perfect

Did you touch the positive cable with the negative for it too crank?
Did this last weekend to figure out that my starter was toast. Ha. Who needs a multimeter when you've got a hot wire

Big what if you have a clicking sound, and you do the rest and the starter lacks the grunt to turn the fly wheel sufficiently also?
Just replace the solenoid they are only like $30 I had the same issue and that fixed it
I just did this with pliers and the starter didn’t move so that means I need to replace the starter? Just want to make sure before I drop some cash.
Glad to see someone cut right to the chase

Yes, everyone is trying to feed the UA-cam algorithm and create longer videos but I end up forwarding to the main repair.
LMAO! I Love the "highly informative, educational video" line.

Where did the hot red lead come from and how was it powered??
From a deep cycle battery, and from the battery.
Spot on replaced starter and it stacted right up

Wired backwards. Did this on my Kawasaki Brute Force and felt awfully stupid.

what if your starter spins but the bendix gear doesn't engage the flywheel? I swapped out the starter and same problem.
Even occured when i jumped the starter as you did
did a voltage drop test and it showed a 5 volt power drop in the ground, cleaned the connections and now it works!
I like it .
What about touching the top right wire to the positive ? Does that have anything to do with anything?
I have a thick wire I just jump it over with out taking the nut off thanks for the videos great info keep them coming
Thx. Nice quick tip
Hi will this work on a Force outboard?
where was the power from the red wire coming from?
Using a multimeter I have power to the solenoid. Doesn’t make a sound when I try and start it. Either power doesn’t run to the starter from the solenoid or the starters not working. Or even the ignition switch is done! Don’t have a clue yet

short handles of pliers from one post to other. dont have to take anything off.
Ha I just did this and the starter didn’t crank so I guess the starter is what I need to replace?
Hi, can i use a Tilt and Trim Solenoid as a Starter Motor Solenoid
So if you do this and starter doesn’t move, it’s that starter?
Would this work on a newer (2000) Johnson 4 stroke?
Lmao that's genius
Core.
Some folks think if the solenoid clicks, it's good. Not so.
Tried this and blew my relays- power tilt and starter relays just buzz instead of engaging
where does the solenoid ground to with the rubber damper between the bracket and block?
That is the black wire on the solenoid.
The 2 little screws, that is the electromagnet connections.
@@BrandonsGarage thanks found a wire diagram and connected it. if you work on motors to get them started would like to know since your not far away
Could have been the neutral safety switch, or not having it in neutral.
Well no, as the solenoid clicks.
nice job ty to you
Open the solenoid, probably very easy fix! And nice for a video...
Wat if my engine is trying to turn over but no spark can't be my solenoid?
correct
@@BrandonsGarage what else could it be I replaced stator, battery rectifier, switch pack, spark plugs? I took off kill switch wire yellow n black what else could it be?
I replaced the bad solenoid and still nothing when I turned the key. The starter is good. What next😬

When I tried that I got a lightning bolt sized arc. What did I do wrong?
I know this question was a while ago but it sounds like you somehow dead shorted the battery , i.e. bridged + and - and got fireworks .
dude. thanks lol
What if I touch the red hot wire from the battery to the starter wire and nothing happens?
bad or no ground, or bad starter.
@@BrandonsGarage I’m thinking it’s the starter, I get the click sound when I turn ignition. When I touch ignition wire to starter wire, I get the click sound, but the starter not engaging.
still doesnt eliminate the possibility of a bad ignition switch or wiring to the solenoid.
Except the solenoid was clicking, trying to activate.
Thus, circuitry was fine.
Adding to Brandon's commentnans as s my dad used to say, when it walks, swinms and quacks like a duck ... it is a duck !

The gear isn't spinning?

I did the test and nothing happened. Can any of you help me to see what it is. Is it the starter m?
Probably; or cables/connections
