- As I recorded the video for "The Shortest Straw", I thought the bass sound was peculiar and somewhat familiar. I did some research and found out that the Bass for AJFA album was actually recorded using a WAL bass!
I had to try it out! So I decided to go for this song. There is no isolated track but I found it is available on Rocksmith, so I studied the bass line from there. I found it peculiar how on the record it seems he plays really long notes during the riffs after the solo... I decided to play those riffs as a solo bass segue to the song in the end just for fun.

I would love to hear you do a cover of "To Live Is To Die" - In my humble opinion, that is the best composed track on the album. It's a shame they didn't do that with the San Francisco Symphony.

I had a few years learning the bass as a teen, but my musical aspirations were cut short by a pool diving accident where I broke my neck, but it never stopped me from the loving the instrument and appreciating it through others like yourself. Not only is it a crime that the bass in Justice was basically snubbed out but to find out now that it was a Wal that got snubbed. All I got to say to Lars is CMON MAN!!!!! Great playing Kello and cool little bit of info to go with it. They should have you remaster Justice with that Wal.
Thanks! If you listen to the isolated bass stems available you can tell the bass was not even produced at all. The sound and some lines are too rough. I can see why they did what they did. Live Jason did work through some of those songs better, particularly this one!

For the longest time I’ve been watching live videos of Jason playing Harvester of Sorrow to figure out exactly what he’s playing, but no luck
He does change it somewhat live. He does a much fuller bassline during several sections where on the records we keeps long open notes. Still, great song to play along to 🤘🏻🔥🤘🏻

Exactamente, yo tampoco nuca encontré esa líneas de bajo, la "tocaba" lo mejor posible pero nunca me satisfizo ( sólo en mi pieza claro está), para mí esta será la definitiva, simple pero contundente, también me gustó mucho la sección que pones sólo con bajo al final de video, gracias Kello, este es mi disco favorito de Metallica, mucha salud!!!

Newsted was underrated and underutilized in Metallica. I always liked him.
Yeah weird that being the big Motörhead fans that Metallica were, they would choose to put the bass so low in the mix (or eliminate it entirely) Motörhead we’re led by the bass.

El Wal es gran parte del sonido. Además le meth un poco de saturación en el Helix para darle un timbre un poco más agresivo.
