  • As our cold weather 2021 trip continues we take you to what has to the most visited national park, The Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We spent a few days there in hopes we would get a glimpse of the now famous once extinct ELK herd. We made new camping friends, met up with nice subscribers and cooked campfire chili over the Solo Stove.
And during this video we answer a question we get a lot… we share our thoughts on WHY DO RETIREES CHOOSE TO TRAVEL?
And since you guys seem to like it we continue the theme of using one of Owen’s songs in the video. This time it’s the song he wrote about his shoes… called THESE OLD SHOES. Here’s a link to download it if you’d like: owenpoteat.bandcamp.com/track...

We love coming home to our boys and grandchildren . We travel with our RPOD, where we have a base camp to come back to after a day of exploring an area. Happy Camping! Nice song too! Love the Smokies where we camp. Yummy Chili! we also got to see a harem of Elk one year! Joe's Pancake House in Maggie Valley is awesome but they close at 12. Enjoy!

As a kid I got car sick, bad, so I never liked to go anywhere in the car. As a kid my family made 1 trip to the Oregon beach at Newport Oregon right before school started, kind of a reward for all the hard work of getting up hay all summer. Windy mountain road to get over the Cascade Mountains. I would get sick along the way, once or twice. I do fine now, since I do all the driving. 50 miles was a long trip for my family until I retired. We aren't able to get out and walk a lot so we see the world from the front seat, on back roads. Been to Yellowstone, Redwoods, Tetons, Coast of Washington/Canada border and points between. Traveled all over Oregon in the last 10 years. Our favorite is down the Oregon coast to the redwoods. Try to do it every year.
We have big herds of elk here in western Oregon. Most all our red meat is ground elk or cut for pot roast. We see deer everyday. I take 1 deer a year, too, mostly jerky and meat sticks. Lots of wild turkeys, every day they make their rounds, about 50 come down our driveway and out through the pasture this time of year. The little Luckiamute river is 30' away from our back deck, looks a lot like the creek in your video. Our little off-grid cabin is upstream of the falls at Falls City Oregon, near Blackrock.
My chili is 1/2 lb ground elk in an 8" cast iron skillet, onion, celery, can of diced tomatoes and a can of chili beans in mild sauce. I add chili powder to taste (very little)....James

We love our town and our 120yo house which I have (almost) entirely refurbished over the years. However, you can't meet new new people or have adventures sitting on your duff. So, when we get itchy feet, we fire up the van and hit the road. It's the best feeling. So is coming home after a few weeks of rambling.

Being an army brat, I hated to travel. I had no roots. Now that I'm retired, these 4 walls ain't cutting it anymore. We get out at least 4 times a year. The wife is content on staying at the camper with the dog while I explore the area. We have to stay local because of her mother.

A beautiful relaxing video, with highlights that I really enjoy . Love seeing the elks and be aware of this beautiful creature how they make you jump up and look at them . I’m fond of listening to this song these old shoes that takes a journey of different places . It sure tells a lot of stories. Cooking chilli on a cool evening , warms up the soul and looks so awesome. RV travelling to me is to get away with my wife and relax and breath the fresh air , listen to sound of the season and look at the majestic scenery. This is by far the BEST video you have ever done. You've opened up about your lives, experiences, and just everything. Love your comments about travel and retirement. We love hopping on a plane and going to Europe, but with the recent unpleasantness and the higher expenses, that is something for another day... or year more like!
Travel by RV is our dream... and if Ford will ever get their collective BEE-HINDS in gear, we will get that Embassy Duo and travel both the US and Canada to see what we see (maybe even see you!).
We are much like you... we don't want to live in an RV, but extended travel is definitely a possibility. A few months on the road and a few months at home sounds like heaven!
Of course there are always issues... had no idea there was a propane shortage!
My wife always complains I have no sense of direction.
I got so angry once, I packed up my stuff and right!
    😁 Be seeing you!

That will be a great stop, so many great things in that area. One thing I would recommend at Cades Cove is the 11 mile nature loop, you can drive your car but there is usually part of one day a week that it is closed to traffic and you can ride your bikes if you have them, it a great way to experience the area. Have fun in Florida.

It’s Monday and the chili looks marvelous! A Dutch Oven would be great but they’re just too big for Van Life. BTW, I butter my grilled cheese on the outside. We traveled down the Blue ridge Parkway from Weaverville to Cherokee and were in some of those same spots. Sadly, we missed seeing any of the elk. We are late to rving, but like that we can take our pup with us and he seems to enjoy it. RVers are a tremendous community and seem always happy to help fellow travelers. We enjoy boondocking some and our small class c allows us great flexibility in traveling and maneuvering tight areas. The more we do it, the more we love it. There are some urban legends about things in the woods around the Appalachian areas, have you ever encountered anything that concerned you? I must be watching too much of the wrong side of tik tok. Lol You visit such nice state parks, I’m so jealous. We are trying to decide on the right rv for the next stage of our journeys. I’m over trailering. Lol take care and hope to see you down the road sometime. Laurie in Tampa Bay, Fl. 😎

3 years will FLY by! Congrats! No big foots in the mountains for us… yet. We are over trailering too… but it does have it’s advantages that go along with it’s disadvantages. Good luck with the search and prep for your fun “you time”.

Smokemont is great. Good thing you guys went in the winter, a lot of rattlesnakes had moved in over the summer. Lest see, one time at the campground an Elk walked down the road in the campground (loop D) and the next trip a bear came through one night (loop D) our dogs went nuts. Yeah next I go, I will have a hard sided camper and no tent. Glad you guys had a great time.

Awesome video. Great song too. I'm liking what I hope will be a regular new addition to your videos. Or at least an occasional treat. You guys are becoming a Sunday habit as comfortable and as comforting as, well, as an old pair of shoes. Loved the elk and the deer, and the photos of the night sky were amazing. When you talked about seeing new things through old eyes and familiar things too I thought, ain't it the truth. Lived experiences can give us a whole new perspective on most everything. Another great vlog... ❤️ U 2 !! So true about spouses becoming closer in a small space (punny!). MANY told us we would kill each other or divorce! in our little RV. Spent 4 months in it and our relationship has never been better (46 years now).. Next spring, we'll move in to it full time. CANT WAIT!! (btw, I hope you can get propane again soon... we got our Blackstone Griddle partially due to your Griddle-me-this's... and love it! ... .. oh and ... I've had to open cans with a hammer and screwdriver. We have a list of things to not forget and then forget to look at the list. Thanks for the laugh.
The old church reminds me of the church from when I was a kid. Toilet wasn't inside. Most people get it backwards. I had no problem using the outhouse in winter. In the summer, wasps had plenty of time to set up their nests. Always bang that toilet seat before use. Definitely want to visit and stay at Smokemont next time we're there.

Y'all make it look so easy! My husband is retiring December 22. We are nervous, scared and excited all rolled into one! We do not have the money to buy a camper van but we have built out the back of our truck cap and are going to try it out in January. I wish we were on the other side of knowing if we love it or "going to kill each other"!!!! Time will tell, I guess! We both just wish we had a van type camper so we would feel more secure that if something happened we could just walk to the front and drive away without having to get out of the vehicle! We have a pup dog too. We're not sure if we are going to be able to bring him along or not but we really want to. Again, it's because of not having a van. I enjoy watching y'all and wish you all the best! Safe travels!

Thank you so much for sharing. Congratulations to your husbands retirement. I think you are being really smart by building out what you have especially if your not sure you are going to like it. Nervous, scared and excited are good things to feel. If you are worried about not being able to drive away if needed just go to places you feel safe until you have everything worked out. I’m excited for you and would love to hear how everything goes. Good Luck! And just have fun, it’s an adventure!

I think I paid around 80 dollars for the rig and it costs less than 5 dollars to put 5 pounds of propane in the tank and it works very good. the name of the tank is flame king and the hose is there with it.

Pull it closed right and then you can keep other things in the cavity. We often store wood or even our ca cast iron pots. It takes up some room but it is a definite don't leave for a trip without item.
