  • Charlie's Bunion - Great Smoky Mountains National Park
    Enjoy breathtaking mountain views along the world-famous Appalachian Trail on this hike to a picturesque stone outcrop known as Charlie's Bunion. Charlies Bunion is one of the best hikes in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
    The hike begins from the large parking area at Newfound Gap. You travel east on the Appalachian Trail toward Charlie's Bunion. I would highly suggest hiking to Jumpoff, a spur trail, where you see Charlie's Bunion from above along with view of Douglas Lake. After returning from the Jumpoff spur you pass an AT shelter called the Icewater Spring shelter. Continue to Charlie's Bunion for panoramic views including a great view of Mount LeConte.

    One of my favorite hiking destinations in the GSMNP. I first visited it on a long-distance backpacking trip (two weeks) when I was 16 years old. That was 46 years ago.

    You didn't know to yell towards the valley below Charlies' Bunion in order to hear the multiple, clear echoes. Best echo I have ever heard.

      I did not know that, next time. It was a great view regardless. See you outside!

      @@OutsideChronicles I love hiking out to Charlies' Bunion. it gets you into the back country on a pretty easy, but long trail. My other favorite hike is taking the A-Trail from the parking lot at Clingman's Dome to the observation tower on top. You have to walk down an access trail maybe 50 feet at first to connect with the A-Trail, which discourages most people. However, once you are on the A-Trail, it is a very gentle hike to the top. This gets you away from the crowds and you are quickly on one of the most beautiful parts of the A-Trail with great vistas and quietness.

    Smoky Mountain Brewery is my favorite place to eat. I love their Helles. Haha! Newfound Gap is pronounced “new-found” 😁👍🏼
    Man love the way you present this video and especially the educational side of it. Outstanding job man!!
    The Jump Off Trail is actually not an official trail in the park which to me it needs to be.

      Plug-it In Hikes thanks for the compliments, glad you liked the video. My wife had the Helles, I had the Black Bear Ale. Loved both! We loved GSMNP and the surrounding area.

    Wow you made it look easy made the hike around 1980 and it kicked butt I had a heavy pair of hiking boots and it turned them into mush couldn't see maybe 20ft in any direction but glad to see what it looks like on a clear day.

      Sorry you did not get any views, but at least you have a story. This was one of my favorite hikes in GSMNP. Thanks for watching.

    First of your videos to pop up in my feed. Very well done. I’ve hiked to The JumpOff & the Shelter. Have also hiked Boulevard down from the Lodge. Obviously an “easy” hike for you but it’s not classified as easy in the trail books. That first mile climb from Newfound Gap might surprise some people. Totally worth the effort. A great hike for sure.

      Thanks for the comment and watching! We loved the Smokey Mountains. This year we are going to the other side of the range to climb Mt Mitchell and Chimney Rock staying near Asheville.

    Thank you for the great video! Are there any spots that would be really hard for someone with vertigo? It looks like most of the hiking has plenty of space on each side of the trail.

    • @OutsideChronicles
      @OutsideChronicles  3 роки тому +1

      It's a pretty tame hike, no ledges or major scrambling. The only place I would stay away from is the final rock structure. Up to 6:10 in the video is just wide trail. That last little bit, really only 100 yards, is a little exposed, but still a wide trail.

      Thanks for watching and sub’ing, I have othe GSMNP hikes on my channel, highly suggest Alum Cave and Mt Leconte in addition to Charlie’s bunion. And I used a GoPro Hero 6 for this video, have since upgraded to the 8 and LOVE it.

      @@MetroOnTheMove Cool, just sub'ed, will check out your videos. Yeah, the Hero 8 has such a great picture and stabilization compared to the 6. The audio is so much better too. I also love the shortcuts.

    would you say the hike is doable with a 2-year-old on your back?

    • @OutsideChronicles
      @OutsideChronicles  3 роки тому +1

      I would say yes if you are used to hiking with them. The AT portion of the trail is well maintained. The last little bit has some minor scrambles starting at about 6:16. I would skip Jumpoff.

    Anywhere to set up camp around here?

    • @OutsideChronicles
      @OutsideChronicles  Рік тому

      I am not super familiar, but I did pass an lean-to on the way, part of the AT. The National Park also had campgrounds. Not sure if you wanted backpacking or car camping.
