Pup family probably didn’t do their research on puppy training , it’s a lot of work. But I fell in love with my doodle day 1 and dedicated myself to get to know his every que. I look forward to a lifetime with this dog and will be here to put in the time to help him be his best self.

We adopted a rescue puppy this past Jan at approx 10 weeks old that had been in two wonderful foster homes prior, including one with an 8YO child, which was great because our kids are 10&12.
It was our first dog ever, for any of us. I read a lot beforehand, I spoke with my friend who is a trainer, and knew it would not be easy - but it was still much more challenging than I expected. My husband had to go out of town on the day we were picking her up, due to a family member passing away. I did my best without the extra support I had been expecting and I cried multiple times, often in one day, because I was overwhelmed. And this was with a puppy our puppy preschool trainer later told us was an “old soul”. I seriously wondered what the heck I’d gotten myself into! But I also knew I’d made a promise to her when we committed to the adoption papers.
Now she is 10 months old and such a good puppy, and SO good with and for our kids. We do need to go back for some training, because there are behaviours we still need to work on or polish up - but you are right, it is so worth it in the long run, and it does go quite quickly, it just doesn’t feel that way in the moment!
Since adopting her, I have always advised families considering getting a puppy for the first time to try and take a week off if you can when you first bring them home, to really work on training them to go outside, etc. It is exhausting! (Also, adopting in Feb when it gets down to -35°C sometimes overnight was not the most fun for potty training either 😜 - lesson learned there too!)
I think, like having kids, you can do ALL the prep work and still realize you are in way over your head once reality hits, but like kids, you find your way. It’s just WAY more difficult than you could ever imagine, at least at first. But that’s also normal.
I guess I’m trying to say, I empathize with both sides, and it’s a big responsibility, which I only fully understand in retrospect. It’s tough.

I had my first puppy returned this past litter and what a nightmare! Seriously the sweetest, calmest puppy and he came back wild. Had to sit and calm him about a week😢 Happy to say that he went to an amazing family:) Thank you for this video and for sharing how difficult it is when a puppy is returned!

Love all your videos! Unfortunately no one ever wants to put the time in. They throw in the towel right away. They want everything yesterday. We know in life things change, but you should know what your life is before you get the pup. My puppy was so darn wild when I first got her!! But it did not last. Now, I can’t even get her off the couch! She’s so lazy and mellow and the perfect little girl. Hope he finds the perfect home. Keep us updated

Puppies require a lot of work and no matter how many times you tell people...they still don't realize the magnitude until they actually get the puppy home.

He has mellowed dramatically with you and being a bit more mature. What a bonus he’s doing so well w his house training, too. I’m shocked he was returned and can tell anyone reading this that we have his brother from this same litter or I would scoop him up today. Such a gorgeous, sweet baby.

I'm so sorry this happened to you! He's adorable. It's so sad the family didn't investigate raising a puppy. I've had and raised dogs all my life from puppies stage to 19yrs old. It's a lot of work (just like a baby) but comes with a lot of love. Hopefully you will find the perfect family.

    Hey Billie,
So glad you posted this and so happy this boy is going to another loving home!! We got our first puppy when I was 28 and to say it was hard is a huge understatement! I was not prepared for the sleepless nights, the sharp puppy teeth, nor the overwhelming responsibility that a puppy brings. I also was not prepared for the enormous amount of love, connection, and happiness this puppy brought to our life! Our puppy is now 4 years old but that first year is so tough! Leaving the adoption center I remember an older man telling me just remember this phase will pass hang in there! I had no idea what he was talking about but I’m so thankful he said that later on, I just kept reminding myself this was a phase in both the puppy and our life! We love our little guy so much and I’m grateful we stuck it out but I understand a young family finding the difficulty in that situation especially when they are probably already sleep deprived by their human children. I agree with you getting a puppy is something you have to commit to for both the puppy’s sake and your own but So glad this guy found another great home and love your channel and all the great work you do with these puppies!

We have rehomed one of our puppies we sold at almost a year old and they could no longer take care of the dog and now he is in the perfect home. Some people who have never had a puppy don’t realize the hard work needed for a few months will be worth it in the end. We never want any of our puppies in a shelter or dog pound. That person got nothing back. They were happy the dog got a good home.

My breeder is less than compassionate about the situation but will give me my money back. I feel terrible and didn’t walk into this lightly. But the guilt that I feel in addition to what my family and friends are putting me through is not helping

The hubby & I got a puppy a month ago. He was 8wks old & super wild. For a month, I woke up at 3am & 6:30 am everyday for potty breaks. My knees were killing me from all the bending down. My body hurt so bad in general & I felt like a zombie most days bc of the sleep deprivation. Guess what? He just turned 3mos, he's starting to consistently go to the back door on his own to let me know he needs a potty break. He's now sleeping thru the night! He's less wild around the house & we're doing great with sit, come & stay commands. We're turning a corner & altho it was so much harder than I ever imagined I chose to focus on all the joy he was bringing to my house than the hard times. The house no longer felt empty. I didn't have to watch TV bc he was so entertaining.....lol. Every morning I got to wake up to his gorgeous face & sweet puppy breath. So, I'm so thankful that I persevered & starting to reap the benefits of all our hard work. He's still mouthy & needs more training but we're here for him & he's family forever.

    Hi Billie:
I'm a relatively new subscriber to your channel--I can't remember what I was searching for that was dog related but your channel popped up. Although I am currently not looking for a puppy, I hope whatever comments I leave may be of value to you or someone else.
Briefly about me: I've been a dog handler for 23 years now, have had six working service dogs, am experienced in dog training though I don't do it professionally, and I raised one of my dogs from puppyhood.
Regarding this video, I've seen this kind of situation happen to other breeders and it devastates me every single time; I can only imagine how heartbreaking and frustrating it is for you. The thing that many people need to understand is that having a puppy is not only a huge commitment, but there are no shortcuts to get what you want. Sorry, but there just aren't. It takes work--a crap ton of it--and I get that people want the "perfect" companion--that obedient dog that will look at you adoringly, wag his/her tail with an "I'm here, what would you like me to do attitude?", but puppies and dogs aren't machines; you don't press a button and PRESTO! You get what you want. You have to work through the hard stuff, and if you're open to it, the process can be both rewarding and beautiful.
The other thing I've seen many people do is not plan ahead of time. I have learned the hard way that the more preventative things you can do at the beginning, the better chance of success you will have. For a dog to reach his fullest potential, it takes a committed owner who is willing to teach and learn.
I understand, Billie, your point about working with people in regards to giving them a refund, and not knowing you, it's not my place to advise. But I do feel that any refunding in this situation is undeserving because the buyer did not abide by the agreed upon contract terms; they chose to return a dog because they did not plan ahead, got overwhelmed, etc. Well, that isn't your problem. I'm generally a very sympathetic person, but I have little patience for those who bail out for petty reasons.
Also, people need to understand that breeding and training costs time and money. If you do it right, it all goes back into the dogs.
I really appreciate all the training you do with your dogs. I was curious, so I did look at your website, and I see that you are also on Good Dog. I'm familiar with the Puppy Culture program, and I think it's great that you take a holistic approach with your pack.
I currently don't have any experience with any of the Doodle breeds; my own dogs have been a Lab, a Goldador, and German Shepherds.
I'm sorry you are having to deal with this; I hope that the handsome boy soon finds his long-term family.

I consider myself knowledgeable (20 years experience) about poodles and he was the most difficult. I had a pack of 5 poodles and loved it…He was a gift for my in-laws, which changed their minds after about 2 months…Since I was the one that took him to them I felt responsible for his care…..Ive watched your videos and seen your puppies and if I lived closer I would get one of your puppies..

From appearances he seems well adjusted but I would certainly make sure medically that any vet fees, vaccinations & tests needed before he is re-adopted are taken from the returned fees. My sister is looking for another one but she'll be doing some traveling until or at the end of Sept so she's put off her search. I hope Mr. Green finds his forever home soon, he's just to sweet!

This is me personally - I would refund the family 1/2 the purchase price and thank them for returning him to me. I do whatever I need to to make sure in my contract and in my words that no one is ever afraid to return a pup that wasn't working out back to me. That said I've been breeding for 25 yrs and only had 1 puppy returned due to an allergy issue after a week of having the pup that family I gave them a full refund and easily found her another home. The vetting process to get one of my pups is hard ... I don't breed very often so I don't have lots of pups on offer so if someone wants one from me usually they don't even get to choose the gender or color and being honest I generally don't sell to families that don't have a fenced yard unless they are a dog savvy owner with previous experience with dogs and I don't often sell to people that have never owned a dog before. My breed like most doodles is busy, active and high maintenance. One thing that might help you is to add into your contract a requirement to attend puppy socialization classes and/or puppy training class if they do not take the pup to these required classes their warranty would be null and void. I know it's hard to expect folks to pay for training classes but if they can pay 3-4k for a puppy they can invest in the training you'd think if they paid that much for a pup they would be committed to working with him more and not throwing their hands up after 10 days but again double edged sword better to get him back now than they wait and do damage by keeping a pup they don't want. I will take a dog back happily at any time in it's life - I have had a couple dogs come back when owners have passed away or had to move to assisted living and family members couldn't take their dog they have come back and lived here the rest of their life. I feel like as a responsible breeder this is my duty and as a responsible owner their duty is to do right by the dog and give them the wonderful home and life they promise us. Sadly it doesn't always work out which means more work for us and loss of $ but it is what it is. This little guy will find just the right home in no time take this time to leash train him and stuff families often time enjoy a little older pup who is crate trained and already leash broken ... he's adorable and people shouldn't worry about any issues I am assuming you will have your vet check him top to toe again before he leaves you for a new family :) Good luck with him.

Thanks Jen for following along and leaving your comment. and yes, i definitely respect the family for making the RIGHT decision of letting him come back, and like i mentioned in the video- im not looking to double sell him, but hes definitely not any less of a puppy from being in another home for 10 days.
Thank you for the information on what might need to be added to the contract +/- puppy application...
we definitely would never turn away a puppy or one of our dogs for being returned. our lines and their lives are more important to us, for sure.
      thank you for your comments!

@@SilverCreekGoldendoodles no your puppy is just as valuable today as he was the day he left you and before anyone has the right to own him he's yours first. I always remind myself of that they are mine to share with others and bring happiness to their families the way these dogs have done mine. I agree with you not selling him twice i'd had a hard time with that too ... but the family involved needs to learn a lesson from buying a pup they were not willing to care for and wasting your time - for me that'd be half the purchase price. Every breeder needs to do what feels right for them ... I respect the way you handle your program and can tell you are a good person that loves these dogs and want only the best for them. It sucks when family #1 apparently was not it and thankfully he's where he belongs for now until the RIGHT family comes along

My niece got a mini poodle Bichon mix for her kids. Within weeks the kids lost interest and wouldn’t spend time with him. We ended up adopting him because I couldn’t bear to have him go to a non family member. I hadn’t had a dog for over 30 years. It was challenging but so worth it. He was 15 years old when he died. That was on Oct 10, 2022 and we are both still devastated. We are currently working with a breeder in Canada but it isn’t going real smoothly. We live in Alaska so it seems like the shipping is problematic. This is our first time getting an animal from a breeder. I wanted to cry for that puppy being returned that way. They are a living thing and it requires a commitment. I will address the elephant in the room. Yes $3800 is a lot for a puppy but you know that going in and most contracts spell out the policy on refunds.

He's Gorgeous and so smart!! I just don't think that having to possibly get up multiple times at night going out to potty & the whole process of adding a new family member as a difficult task. For me it's so part of the Joy of getting a puppy!! I look forward to all of those moments because they are part of the process and it goes by so fast!! You get to grow that strong bond and be able to train them to be an amazing family member and have fun in the process teaching them to walk on the leash & playing yeah it's a process but I just don't see that as being difficult. Besides Billie, your puppies are so easy going & laid back potty training has already been started so your not having to get that going along with all of the other work that you've done to make sure their not fearful, timid or showing any signs of aggression is proof that they are a happy balanced puppy. Your not going to have him for very long just look at him!! He's Gorgeous & just Precious. Look at his colors so Handsome 🥰 I Love what you do and that's producing Spectacular Puppies 🐾🏆🐾 I appreciate you!

He is ABSOLUTELY beautiful. It's simple logic to me, a pet is FAMILY, and if I had the extra time I'd take this beautiful boy in a heart beat!! I am currently training a 4 month old Cavapoo and it's tiring as if we had a new born baby but worth every moment. The family was simply not ready and lazy, may same harsh but true. I don't have an answer as far as refund but so glad they returned him since they didn't want him. But you can't RETURN kids when they are unruly and turn out terrible at 2 either, js. I don't understand folks. I'm glad he seems happy and he will be better off without them.

I don’t even bother training my puppies till 12 weeks
At 8 weeks of age we’re just monitoring them
At 12 weeks they do so much better- how disappointing they gave up on him he’s adorable!

Awe.. Not Mr. Green. I’m afraid that people see small fluffy beautiful, big doe-eyed pups and fall in love. They’re cuddly and kissy and will follow you to the moon. Before signing a contract most don’t think about the crying in the kennel because they want attention, the long process of potty training, and the sadness pups go through when they’re first separated from their brothers and sisters. I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you or them. All things work out for the best in the long run. You’re a wonderful breeder🐶

Is he still available? He is so beautiful! I have 45 years of rescuing all kinds of breeds, including a Golden Doodle that I rescued. If one listens to those who have been tossed around from foster, kill shelters. I will adopt him.

I adopted a female F1 goldendoodle when when she was 5 months old. She came with a vet book telling us her shots etc. while looking at the book I noticed an email address…hmmmm so I emailed the person asking if they had had a dog that had puppies on such and such a date, the woman wrote back and told me yes. She then asked where we were…we live in Calif” She informed me she was in Kentucky and the puppy we had was one of the her dogs last litters. She was upset since the person that she thought bought doodle lied to her..and how did our girl get to Calif? People do all kinds of things when they decide they can’t handle a puppy they do try and return them…some end up in the pound and they don’t care if they get their money back…Oh by the was I paid $500.00 for our girl. Our girl was amazing…she is gone now, and if I wasn’t so old I would get another one in a heartbeat…

Your puppies are expensive but you do some testing that others don’t do. I think for all the tests and Monet that you put into them they are pretty reasonable. Vet visits are expensive. So when you take all that into consideration it’s not really that bad. I can completely understand your position. We have 2 pups and they are a lot of work. But they are so stinking adorable!

Getting a puppy is a commitment just like having a baby. They cry at night because they miss their mom and littermates. They need consistency with their feeding, training, and schedule. They need a lot of walking to learn potty training. I got a rehomed puppy ( daschund) and it took a lot of work to ‘untrain’ the bad routine. I have three dogs now. I have gotten most of my dogs as puppies. I have rescued 2 dogs - much easier to train an 8 week old puppy.

He is great but if they could not feel the love for this puppy he needed to come back to you. A puppy takes training, patience and lots of love and I had the scratches and nips from my daughters sheepadoodle to prove it. We all loved this dog and he loves us and become a great2 year old 60 lb family herding dog😂

This is where breeding sucks, honestly. I do rescue work and have only had rescue or literally an accidental litter, and I’ve always welcomed the dog back. That’s my responsibility breeding OR give the new responsible owner find a new home. It’s kind of crazy to think that a puppy can go for 2500 and more and the family can lose out on that money and have to return the puppy and lose out completely.
I completely understand and that’s an investment and they should’ve thought about it before but things do happen and I don’t think a family should be in my opinion punished and not be able to give the opportunity for them to find a home with a fee. This is personally why I will never buy from a breeder that has contracts because in one way or another someone always get screwed, and yea that’s more my opinion but more of what I’ve seen. Even if you were to say it in the contract that they can rehome for half of the fee they purchased or less that gives them something to be able to get a little bit some thing back from caring for the dog as you did while breeding.

I'm sure someone would love to take that little love bug! People now are so used to everything being instant due to technology that they won't take the time it takes to train him. I don't think there are other breeds that are as mellow as he. That family needs to buy a toy robot dog so they won't be inconvenienced. I miss my 11 yr Cavalier that had to be euthanized last November due too serious unknown illness. I miss him terribly.
