Random bit of trivia: this episode was so emotionally crushing that afterwards the cast had dinner and everyone was so drained that no one said a word to each other. This ended up being the inspiration for the shawarma scene in The Avengers.

“Why can’t I stay?” - If it helps (and it did for me); Fred wouldn’t have forgiven Angel & Spike if they traded her life for the hundred of thousands of lives that’d have been lost to save her. She unknowingly died helping keep Angel & Spike’s souls intact, she’s a bigger hero than she imagined. She leaves the world as pure & innocent as anyone else that’s ever appeared in the BuffyVerse.

@@seanthomas3091 You gotta look at it on a sliding scale; it’s Angel, who hasn’t tried to and/or succeeded in killing somebody (or something)? Tara obviously didn’t go around getting her hands dirty, but her death nearly kicked off the apocalypse (not her fault or what she’d want, but still). Oppositely, Fred was allowed to die to prevent the deaths of countless others because Angel & Spike both knew Fred wouldn’t have been able to live with herself and that much blood on her hands. It’s a sacrifice Fred would have made if presented the choice herself, what more can I say?

    • @seanthomas3091
      @seanthomas3091 3 роки тому +3

@@locomadman since we're going down that road...Fred likely would have made the choice, but she didn't. Buffy killed her "soul mate" to save the world and then gave her life to save the world. So really the character in the Buffyverse who is the purest is Buffy herself. Since the slayer is Joss' "Christ figure"...there is no greater love than laying down your life for your friends. No other character in that universe was confronted with the choice of giving up their life for the entire world.

I've heard that Cavemen vs. Astronauts was added as a side bit for humor, but I find that hard to believe. It fits so perfectly with fact that Ilyria (ancient and primordial) wins against Fred (a scientist) and the whole skyscraper full of people trying to save her.
Back in 4x20 Fred gave a speech about the difficulty of human emotions and how even so she would "take that over being a shell any day". That always makes this flash forward this episode, where she literally becomes a shell 😭

This one is on par with "The Body" in terms of "never wanna watch the show again, and possibly go walk into the ocean" vibes. Just utterly brutal and merciless. The only silver lining (and it's a small one) is that Amy Acker is now given a chance to play something radically different from anything we've ever seen before. But that's cold comfort.

Nah as time goes on rhe body while still real loses some of that punch for me this episode is still a hit to the gut. I think part of it for me is that Joyce was a natural death, quick and painless and nobody can outrun that. Fred suffers and struggles and the whole process of her death is on camera and with it we watch Wes spiral. Wes who was by the book as to right and wrong shoots someone for making him angry and watches her body shut down

My reasoning. 1) It's non natural. 2) We see her and know she's suffering. Joyce was stated to have felt no pain because it was quick. 3) We have to watch other characters spiral into things that aren't like themselves. 4) There is an option to save her but they HAVE to let her die

Something really sad about the flashback is that her parents wanted to protect from things that are truly dangerous in the world...having no idea the kinds of things that WOULD pose a threat. And in the hours of her suffering her parents are back home in Texas unaware. As much as I've been critical about some of Fred's writing, I never fail to cry about all the things she says while dying...it reminds me of how brave she could be despite being so defined by jumpiness and fear when we met her. A LOT of us felt the same way you did after this episode. I was so angry. I had rooted for Fred and Wes to get together and then they finally do and they couldn't even let them be happy for an episode. In the years since I first watched it...this has become one of my favorite Angel episodes. Everyone gave a great performance. If you get a chance sometime you should watch the commentary video for this. I forget who does it other than James Marsters, but it's good. I know he said he really wanted to convey a lot when he said there's a whole in the world and it feels like we should have known. What makes this so tragic is that they ARE all heroes and yet...they couldn't save one of their own (and let's be honest...it was Fred. A lot of them would have taken her place if they could have). I feel like this episode really defines the entire series...the darkness and tragedy and humanness despite the fact that they live in a supernatural world.
This is also sort of the "Angel" answer to The Body on "Buffy." Those two episodes are tragic and both are hard to watch. They are also probably two of the most-watched videos for reactors because of how impactful they are. Both are hard episodes...but both have so much meaning behind them.

FRED AND WES WERE TOGETHER! THEY KISSED A LOT AND HAD FLIRTY BANTER AND IT WAS EVERYTHING THEY (AND WE) DESERVED EVEN IF ONLY FOR A BRIEF TIME! THEY LOVED EACH OTHER WITH EVERYTHING THEY HAD, AND SO DID WE... NOTHING ABOUT WHAT COMES NEXT TAKES AWAY FROM WHAT THEY SHARED!
And then quite possibly the most soul-destroying last words to ever be uttered in a Whedonverse series (which is saying a lot considering the very long and depressing list)...

I've always liked to compare this to Buffy's death. Buffy went out heroic, painless, saving the day, bold; it was her choice. It's the death we all want. Fred's death is much closer to what most of us get; long, slow, painful, and full of grief, confusion, and fear.
As always, a story about monsters is more human than most fiction out there...

13:19 " I mean as soon as we'got the first scene with a flashback with Fred, her parents I was like: 'Well, F*ck' "
    :)
Yes, that is the concept in the whole Buffyverse: There are happy moments, but when it is too happy you should get suspicious. I feel your pain.

I know you said that you assume everyone's been looking forward to you getting to this episode, but speaking as a fellow Fred fan who remembers how much The Body affected you I was dreading you having to go through this - so much so that I had a stress dream about it a few nights ago. 😅 Some of your viewers might like pain, but I'm sure I speak for more than a few of us when I say that if we thought that we could have convinced you that Angel was abruptly cancelled after Smile Time we would have. Absolutely reasonable to not feel like carrying on after that experience. It's so emotionally draining that it just leaves me feeling numb - which I guess is what they were going for, but it's still not something I like subjecting myself to.
It is masterfully put together, though. The science vs. brute ancient strength debate, the repeating motifs of hollowness, the reminder of a central Angel theme: that life is harsh and cruel, but that's why there's champions... and then the awful moment when the champions don't end up saving the day. At the same time there's the unfortunate timing of this happening so soon after Cordy, and the fact that seemingly no female lead on this show is safe from demonic bodily exploitation, which is all kinds of iffy. To say it's an episode I have mixed feelings towards is putting it very lightly.
Regardless, I do hope you're okay and that you take some time for yourself. Please know that even though we're not as loud as some of your other commenters, there are far more of us who don't care how fast you get through the series as long as you're looking out for yourself.

When I watched this episode I was broken and had to watch some Xena and Hercules back when they were on Netflix. I'm glad I didn't stop because while this is the second time they spit on my soul, it gave rise to one of my favorite characters in the Buffyverse. Illyria is the greatest thing to come out of this season for me. She exudes such ferocity and grace when she on screen. I know this hurts Liam but what comes next blows minds and there's a little something in the comics about it that you might like

This is a rough one for sure. I know exactly what you mean with the anxiety symptoms you mentioned. I get tingling in my arm sometimes and a bit of numbness. It’s annoying. I only recently finished the show for the first time and I was also put off after this one. I really loved the direction they went, though. Honestly I like the last season of angel more than the last season of Buffy because of Fred’s storyline and Buffy has been my favorite show since it aired.

The moment you met and fell in love with Fred, I've been waiting with bated breath for you to get to this episode, because I knew just how painful it was going to be. Fred was just too pure for the world of Angel. Pure things don't survive there. I remember the first time I watched this episode I was too in shock to cry. It was only afterwards when I thought about it that I absolutely sobbed my heart out.
I do think it's a fantastic episode though, as painful as it is. Watching Angel and Spike work together to try and save their girl is everything.

One positive thing about Fred's fate is that she won't be forced to work for Wolfram and Hart from hell. They all sold their souls the moment they joined the firm, so if she had died in another way she would face the same fate as Lilah.

Honestly, I wasn't exactly looking forward to this reaction even weeks beforehand leading up to it. I knew it would break you the way it broke me. For over a decade this episode was at the top of the list of hour of film that completely crushed me (until I watched The Good Place finale). I think they found out they weren't getting renewed some time after the next episode from what we can tell from commentary and things. So this was all part of the original plan before it all changed (which they weren't anticipating; they had the second highest ratings of any show to be cancelled on the network or something)

Oh my… where do I even begin? I’ll bullet-point my thoughts so they’d be easier to read:
    - I can’t stop thinking about how the purest character in the Buffyverse had to have the slowest and most brutal and painful death…
    - Fred is my second favorite character in the Buffyverse after Wesley, and it just broke my heart that they only got to have such little time together. It’s just not fair. I will forever be bitter about this. They’re even my favorite couple in the entirety of the Buffyverse as well…
    - The Cavemen vs. Astronauts argument between Spike and Angel will forever be one of my favorite scenes in the entire show.
    - A small fun fact, one of the crew members of the show came into the writers’ room and wrote “cavemen vs astronauts” on the board, and everyone started arguing about it. They eventually decided to include it in the show, which I think is so interesting lol.
    - Spike’s quote “There’s a whole in the world. Feels like we ought to have known.” is perhaps my favorite quote on the show. It has such a deep meaning that always gets me introspective. I always get chills!
    - Finally, and overall, your reaction is precisely how I envisioned it would be and more. This is one of my top 5 favorite episodes of the show, by the way! It only gets better and better from here on out, my friend. Buckle up, for this is only the beginning! :)

" I can’t stop thinking about how the purest character in the Buffyverse had to have the slowest and most brutal and painful death… " No, that's Tara and she died pretty instantly. Let's not forget in the previous season Fred tried to murder a man (with full premeditation, not even a "heat of the moment" excuse) as an act of revenge and would have done so had Gunn not killed him first.
