    This is a really well done video Charlie! And a super high performance shed. Alas, I have to quibble with some of the words: when I taught you about the layers of a building enclosure, and the skin-sweater-jacket analogy the inner control layer was PRIMARILY a WATER BARRIER and secondarily an Air Barrier. Tyvek as Air Barrier is important, but Water barrier is more important and fundamental. As you show it built, it is great: a top quality design and build. But the most important control layer is the water barrier. The Rain Coat, for most building claddings is expected to leak some water (it is a Rainscreen), and hence why we add the water barrier (Tyvek, building paper, peel and stick). Looks like you used a roof underlayment as a water barrier (which is common good practise because the shingles leak rain water). You could add tape to the foil faced insulation to convert the face of the foam sheathing into a Water Barrier and not use the Tyvek for that purpose... you may have done that but I did not notice you mention this.

      Appreciate the insight Professor Straube! Great point identifying the fact that I was primarily referring to the Tyveks functionality as an air barrier rather than a water barrier in this video. Creating this enclosure, I knew the Tyvek was serving both functions but seemed to have misremembered the primary importance of the "baselayer", which you're stating is to stop water from getting inside. Thank you for the correction! Hopefully this video can serve as a resource to current and future architectural engineering students.
      To all who want to venture further into the study of building science, check out Prof. John Straube's channel for lectures that explore the topic at much greater depth.

    1:02:08 Noticed the left side of the outdoor condenser is blocking the airflow. That side is a 1/4 of the coils that needs to have at least 12 inches of clearance. You may want to cut a section out to allow that to breath easier. The system will work the same with that blocked, it will just cost more to run.
    Nice work on the project and great description of all the steps.

      Thanks for the insight Ryan. You're right that on many models that left side of the outdoor condenser is open, however if I'm not mistaken this model was either closed to had minimal perforations.
      For optimal efficiency, I agree that leaving the left side open would be best (though for absolute optimal efficiency, I would remove the cover all together). I decided to only leave open the sides that are directly in front or behind the fan as I felt that removing them would be the primary factor to ensuring the unit runs properly. Really appreciate your attention to detail here!

    This is by far, the most informative and helpful how-to video for backyard whatever that I've found. I now feel confident in building one of these myself. Thank you, Mr. Frise. You've taken the stress out of this project for me.

    Why did you choose Tapcons over set-in-place post holders or at least some long concrete anchors?

    • @frisedesign
      @frisedesign  6 місяців тому

      Its challenging to get perfect alignment with set-in-place post holders. I chose Tapcons for the flexibility, as it's unlikely your concrete piers will set in a perfect rectangle.

    well done video. Do you folks not get zip sheething up there? basically a osb and water and vapor barrier built into one you just use their tape on the seems. They also have zip-r which is teh same panel with a polyiso lays glued to it. essentially exactly what you did but in one product which cuts down install time. Again well done.

    • @frisedesign
      @frisedesign  Місяць тому

      Thanks Stephen. I'm familiar with the ZIP system but unfortunately its hard to get in small quantities here in Canada. It's much bigger in the States.
      But completely agree, it's a great product that saves a lot of time!

    Greetings. I really like your work. I would like to know how much budget you should have for this project. I understand that every family has different needs. I live in Markham. I also need your help to see if we can have a small building in our backyard?

    Hi Charlie. Is the pine window frame you used 6 5/8 inches as defined in the Plan documents?
    In the material list excel i file I could not find it. Did you purchase 1x8 pine and split it to achieve 6 5/8?

    How does the building "breathe"? I have been watching tons of videos on how to build my own office shed and most mention condensation prevention. I live in the hot humid southeast U.S. (that also sees below freezing temps in the winter). If I install a mini split AC/heater, will this building allow moisture/humidity OUT of the building? It looks well-insulated...but I was wondering about condensation build up and mold? What would you recommend?

      He’s in Canada, so he insulated both the inside and outside walls. You could do away with the insulation he put on the outside walls and the roof. The fiberglass insulation he used inside did not have a vapor barrier, but in your case you’d want that.

    This is a great video, perfect amount of details and not hurried. Thank you.
    How long did it take you to complete this project? (Assuming if you didn’t film it, since that must have taken some time too).

    • @frisedesign
      @frisedesign  6 місяців тому

      Filming certainly added some time. Had I not had to film, I would have been able to complete it in roughly 2 months as 1 person with occasional help.
