When both movies came out I was young. I know John Singleton hand pick most of the Actors in all he's movies. Also like to use Actors that the black community wanted to see. An Director of a all Black cast at that tyme didn't have much to work with cuz of Hollywood what Most Movie directors was looking for in the 90's wasn't much color if you wasn't on Drugs or a Killer. You all did a great job on this analysis. I saw this in the movie theatres in the 90s right before I started college. After watching your analysis, it just occurred to me that Fudge may have been in school for 6 years, not as the person taking a long time to finish his Bachelors Degree, but he could have been finishing a Masters Degree. A standard Bachelors Degree takes about 4 years to complete and a Masters Degree is an additional 2 years. He could have graduated with an MBA, but didn't mention it. Fudge also could be a version of what the Professor was in his early education days. Now I have to watch this movie again for the first time in decades to see what I may have missed. Again, you did a wonderful job on your analysis of this classic film.

This was a dope review yall. I wanted to add that Dedrick Gobert, who played Dookie Boyz N The Hood was in this movie too. I feel like yall might have mentioned that, but if not, he was the guy always in the background with Fudge and he asked Deja if she had any sisters
I still want to believe that fudge is the last minutes of life musings of a dying Doughboy, you know, since we're only told that he got got. We never see how long it took for him to actually pass.
@@AxiomAmnesia oh yeah I know that part, I meant the literal act of dying. Was it immediate or was he alive for a few hours? That's the part we don't know.
As someone commonly referred to as "Dr Ice Cube", these were most certainly 2 of my fav characters since early childhood. (Thaanks to older siblings) Its hard to choose between the 2. I think this is one of the best alternate movie-verse theories around. If doughboi had been fortunate enough to attend college. It may likely have required 6 years to mature and build enough consistency to finish. Think of the tragedies back in South Central that may have forced bro to pause his education. I lost too many friends and fam while in school. In Addition, ya'll are soo right on the "student loans vs safe room and board" situation so many of us have been in. These are almost akin to "John Singleton Caricatures", in different universes where each is a supporting character in different scenarios surrounding his main character (Trey and Malik). Baby Boi is similar, but different in that is more like the same universe as BNTH, but a different time and characters. Great take as always! Maybe Furius is Fudges Father in real life? lol
There's so much I like about Doughboy and Fudge. I think I like Doughboy more because I know more about his background. I understand how he turned out that way. You could see that he was good inside but lacked guidance and love. Doughboy's character was a warning to parents. Fathers, your sons need you, and Mothers, be good to your children.
58:23 after watching this video that seems like a trick question. Now I see more than ever that they are the same person, given a small twist of fate. Doughboy could’ve been told about Frederick Douglas in juvenile detention and given a book about him. Frederick was gangster as hell and Doughboy would have been down with him if given the chance to learn about him. That could’ve been part of his transition . It could also explain why he got stuck at school. Mom wasn’t giving him any constructive criticism. Just a thought.
We love when it all comes together and people get where we were going with this! ❤️ The reality is that no video title could really express what we meant without giving everything away. We appreciate that you were willing to take this discussion trip with us! 😊

On the LoveCraft Country Podcast. They talked about How the hierarchy causes noise in communication between black ppl when it comes to what’s possible in life.. the sisters in the show.. Letti and Ruby wanted to apply to work at a Store.. Ruby is dark skinned and Was certain she wouldn’t be hired bcuz she’d tried before and was still trying.. Letti was sure she could get the job.. and Ruby was dedicated to Convincing Letti that she’d be wasting her time.. both are right in their beliefs due to their differing realities.. For Ruby. She wouldn’t have ever been hired, because she didn’t fit the ‘look’.. Letti wouldve likely gotten the job because She did fit the look and seemed to have already benefited through life in certain ways due to colorism and her having the potential to ‘WhitePass’ .. Allat to say.. this movie does a great job of showing that concept.. the noise that the hierarchy creates in communication of possibilities amongst black people.. Especially when the students interact with Phipps .. Despite being a Minority.. He has a Position of Power.. Which-is also limited in power.. His dual position Makes the students feel they can relate to him.. But his superior way of thinking, quickly reminds them that they have different realities. Phipps would be considered an Acceptional Exception.. Which is the term Tom Burrell uses to describe Black People who seem to have defied all odds of oppression, but are distracted by their own success so much, they don’t realize they are being used as Tools to facilitate the oppression , take all the hits, and given everything they need to become what they once despised. Tom Burrell has a book called Brainwashed. I think every black person should read at least one chapter. Or even a couple pages out that book. Fr fr. It’ll blow your mind the way he breaks shihh down.

Higher Learning" and "Boyz n the Hood" are separate films that explore different aspects of the African American experience and societal issues. "Boyz n the Hood," directed by John Singleton, focuses on life in South Central Los Angeles, particularly the challenges faced by young African Americans. On the other hand, "Higher Learning," directed by John Singleton as well, is set on a university campus and delves into themes of racial tension, identity, and the diverse experiences of students. While both films address social issues and are directed by Singleton, they don't share a direct narrative connection, and "Higher Learning" can't be considered an alternate universe to "Boyz n the Hood. Each film stands on its own, offering unique perspectives on the complexities of race and identity in different settings. The connections may be thematic, as Singleton often explores similar social issues across his works, but they don't form a shared cinematic universe.

Do you see the similarities between the characters?
Yes.
Doughboy was killed two weeks after talking to Trey as a result of killing the dudes who killed Ricky. The end🤷🏾♂️
@@therealmarlonbellamy it could be Boys N the Hood 2 if they survive the shooting. Just without Cuba love it ❤️
I can't pick Both because I'm Both lol Luv

Been a while 🎉🎉 since the theories I love it
i never thought about this before between the two movies. I'd figure, as with many filmmakers, they would use actors they got along with from previous films because they have established that working report
This idea of Higher Learning-which is underrated-being an Alternate-What if-Reality of Boyz brings a new perspective.
It said he does two weeks later.
@@AxiomAmnesia oh yeah I know that part, I meant the literal act of dying. Was it immediate or was he alive for a few hours? That's the part we don't know.
I always wanted that raiders hat doeboy had on
Same here I finally got one last yeah .
@@veda1306 where?
We need more Fudges in our community ❤😊
See, I didn't know about the character types being so parallel between "Boys N The Hood" and "Higher Learning", but now I gotta watch that one, too. 💖
Maybe Furius is Fudges Father in real life? lol
IKR!!! 😂
Great analysis! Fudge was probably my favorite character between doughboy the two.
Do shareef from menace to society and him from boyz in the hood football scene🗣⚡️
This is an interesting theory that is well commentated by you guys.
Now that i think about it i think thats really how ice cube is and he’s just being himself in these roles.
If Dough Boy had hung out with Fudge, he would have turned out differently.
I’ve never seen Higher Learning I’ma have to check that out fr
There's so much I like about Doughboy and Fudge. I think I like Doughboy more because I know more about his background. I understand how he turned out that way. You could see that he was good inside but lacked guidance and love. Doughboy's character was a warning to parents. Fathers, your sons need you, and Mothers, be good to your children.
Fudge was Doughboy with hope. Gotta go with Fudge.
@@AxiomAmnesia no problem! It’s the psychologist in me. I love to interact with someone who promotes individual think, outside the box theory, etc. keep doing what you’re doing. This channel feeds a part of my brain that is hungry 🤤
fun fact, Poetic Justice was a sequel to Boyz n da Hood. I always treated Fudge as Cube real life persona, O'Shea Jackson and Doughboy as his NWA/rap persona Ice Cube. I actually became a version of Fudge back when I was in college.
This a great idea. Alternate realities of pre-existing movies. Better than anything in trash Hollywood
I love the channel. Keep the videos coming an are you guys getting information from somewhere or Is it all in the films your watching? Don't stop an God bless.
We simply watch the films and say what comes to mind. Thanks so much for watching!
😂 funny I thought this when I first saw higher learning in the theater.
I'll have to take a look at that book. I'm always looking for something new to read.
@@AxiomAmnesia yes gawd ! I'm sure yall would really appreciate it.. My Mentor & Acting Coach in College introduced us to that Book & Author.. and it really makes a difference in analyzing and perceiving things, especially art forms that concern human behavior & habits.. Especially when you're intuitively intellectual on some shihh. 😄💐.. i can see yall making great use of that Book in more ways than one.
Damn this was good. Y’all killed this analysis ❤👏🏽

Short answer NO !! Dough wasn’t conscious AT ALL !! 😂😂😂 FUDGE at least had SOME SENSE.
Hey Curtis!! Good to see you back! But what about the idea that Doughboy was starting to get a clue at the end of the film and that Fudge is who he could have been had he been in a different environment.
@@AxiomAmnesia Ok, I’m not gonna front. Dough always knew what time it was. He was just a knucklehead in and out of jail. If he didn’t die would’ve he gotten his act together especially after his Brothers death ? I believe so. It was always a possibility. Like I said, seeing him in College was a dope look, especially him being an elder/mentor to the youngin’s .
@@curtis75blacki agree
The ID thing happened to my son. He was hanging with a group of white kids and someone called about a disturbance in the neighborhood. Out of the 6 white guys 2 white girls and my 1 black son the cops only asked for my son's ID
The real villain of boyz in da hood is Dough and Rick’s MOM. The whole thing is her fault
This was great, I didn’t attend college but my wife graduated UC Berkeley. I showed her this and School Daze and she was like that’s low key how it is😂😂😂
And that's how I always look at Higher Learning like it was Juice 2 and it was parts on there like he was thinking about his old days of Juice
Makes sense how it was living in the hood & how it could’ve been if they decided to get out the hood to college
I see the similarities, but there's still something very different between Doughboy and Fudge. Can't quite put my finger on it.
One other difference between Phipps and Furious Styles, is I believe Furious sympathized and related to the young fellas much more than Phipps did.
It's the JerryCurl 😂😂
Both good hearted characters both loyal to the people around them
I liked both characters because they are the same character just in different situations
Not sure why I didn’t get the notification for this but I’m here for it.
Yessss!!! 😁
Hell yea that's cold their are really parallel universes we live in.
Wow! That is sad, that people were saying that “Boys In The Hood” and “Higher Learning” were not that deep, because they were considered hood movies!
If Doughboy wouldve lived to be Fudge that wouldve been dope
Regina king and ice cube are honorary brother and sister at this point .
Friday😂
Remy micheal rapaport is not even acting. This is how he is in real life
Thats Rocky who almost got bit by Doug boys car
Cube best look was the Jerry curl bizarre right.

We didn't say it was a shared cinematic universe... And you did admit that these same actors have the same qualities.
I was told that the older guy Dough shot in the end is actually the same guy that threw them the ball back when they were kids and thats why the eye zoom in. as to say he was looking at death later in life
What did you see happen in the movie? Was it the guy from the beginning?
Nope one was a Crip the other was a blood
Man till this day.....RICKY!!!!! 😢🙏
DOUGHBOY. Doughboy & Fudge were the same character in my opinion.
Crazy this popped up cuz i watched boyz in the hood on Thanksgiving telling everybody doughboys is furious son 😂 and at the end i was thinking the same thing especially cuz regina Lawrence and Morris is in both movies now lemme watch this video 😂
So ready to watcht this video.
Fudge and Doughboy being the same person? Hmm, very possible.
Of course Lawrence Fishburne's two characters are NOT the same person. One is a black American, and the other a Carribean man.
Maybe you'll change your mind after seeing what we say about Fishburne's characters. Let us know what you think after! 😊
Happy holidays y’all be safe and enjoy
Thanks and same to you! ❤️
I really had a soft spot for Doughboy because of how abusive his mom was towards him. I went to an HBCU and a PWI and we had Fudge’s at my PWI. It was a great community ☺️
@Axiom Amnesia Yall should do a story on Shareef from Menace 2 Society who used to be a knucklehead and show him (thesameactor) ahis knucklehead from Boyz-N-THE Hood
Doughboy character was really from rollin 60s shit crazy
Kane from Grape 🍇 Street
Smokey was from Raymond Ave crip
Damn the Crips was popping in the 90s
Monster had a car, but he never drove it to doughboy’s house
