That scene with Ricky and Trey running from those blood gangbangers always gets me angry. Every time I watch that scene and Ricky tells Trey "they aren't going to do anything they're just showing out" I'm like then WTF are you running from then? It makes NO SENSE to me. Ricky grew up in that blood affiliated neighborhood. He should definitely be aware of the surroundings he grew up around especially having a brother like doughboy. You can't say he was innocent and sheltered because he was a teen dad so that's ruled out. The scarfing down of the ice cream scratching off that ticket and peeing had me heated. LOL His life was in great danger and he was so easily distracted. I personally think he just wasn't too bright. I mean after all he did get just 710 on his SATs. That's passing by the skin of your teeth.
They grew up in a crip neighborhood. Bloods lived over slauson another neighborhood near by. They were going to mess with them because of doughboy and how they showed out on the Shaw.
@@LBDRE Well I'm not that informative of gang territories.... Nonetheless he was living in an area where gangs are prevalent. He was way too oblivious of his surroundings and the dangers within it.
If Doughboy was the older brother the fight is understandable. Even though Ricky was the athlete, Dough was the oldest and apparently the toughest of the two, and the older brother is usually the leader of the siblings so the younger one looks up to them and might not always be mentally prepared to fight with the older brother. Another reason why Dough got slapped, their mother also knew he was the tougher one.
Doughboy grew up in and out of jail. Of course he had to fight and was hard. Ricky was coddled. Chris told Trey when they were kids that Brenda treated her kids differently because of their dads. She disliked Doughboy because of his dad and he probably looked like his dad too.
His death hits hard because he was the polar opposite of his brother he was trying to get out of the hood and he was not gang affiliated unlike his brother who was in the gang and had no desired to leave the hood.
Brenda: yes, please do a deep dive on her. Her attitude and emotions towards both brothers should be analyzed. Furious: remember, he is a real estate man. He already knew the what’s up and what was about to happen with the gentrification of the neighborhood. Also he may have received his house because that was all the money that was allowed with his military benefits, so that’s what he got.
Here's my theory: Doughboy is way too street smart to get axed off in the epilogue, the Filmmakers said two weeks after Ricky got buried, Darrin gets murdered but there's no implication as to "how he got murdered".
You guys hit some really good points especially on the military. The military gave me direction and focus. Plus education (Bachelors/multiple tech schools, and certifications for free), experience, pension, 401K, and multiple homes and I really did travel all over world. Was it hard? Yes but I'm retiring soon. I remember people laughing and saying black men shouldn't join the military but I lived in Detroit. So I feel you guys on this.
RICKY…. I still asked the question every time I watch this masterpiece… “Why couldn’t he just dip into a yard instead of running STRAIGHT?” But after listening to y’all, Ricky not taking his surroundings seriously makes sense. Now I don’t have to ask that question anymore. Thanks #AxiomAmnesia
The actor that portrayed the character "Knucklehead #2" that shot Ricky got addicted to playing a killer and became a murderer in real life. Lloyd Avery II (the actor's name) ended up in prison and was murdered by his cell mate Kevin Roby in a satanic ritual.
i will never understand why ricky ran in a straight line. granted, he may have gotten shot either way, but my man ran in a straight line like he was trying to make a touchdown...
@@mauricerosser-hendrix1158 yeah that's true. given the situation, it could have been panic from ricky as well. something i also noticed was it did seem like ricky knew he couldn't escape based on his facial expression.

I think Ricky’s death showed that you can become a product of your environment even if you are not involved in the gang life. We all wanted better for him. We almost expected doughboy to be killed because of his behavior but Ricky just wanted to play football and get out the hood.
I have the exact same reaction when I see it. He was on his way out, and some genuine bs took him out. It's hard to see, even on screen, the REALITY that so many of us have witnessed or even experienced. My brother was killed at 16yo by his "friend " (pistol to his head) over a girl.

They took his body home because at the beginning of the movie when. Trey was younger they went to go see a dead body. That was just laying there for days. They took him home so he won't just be laying in the street for hours add a bit of shock
There's a marked difference between being an athlete and having hands. Ricky was a high-level athlete and football player, true enough. The problem is that Doughboy had been fighting since they were kids and likely fought often to keep his manhood in the pen. That and the lifting Doughboy was doing in prison helped make up for the disparity between Doughboy and Ricky in terms of athleticism. Add to that the fact that Doughboy's style allows for knowing everything about finishing a fight quickly, and the edge easily goes to Doughboy.
Doughboy has been in and out of Juvenile Hall & LA County Jail since he was a kid. Anyone reading this thread thats spent time in LA County Jail knows that you will be fistfighting soon as you walk in. Doughboy was better practiced. Ricky got the muscles but he hasnt had to fight. Ricky wasn't a street dude. He was just... a boy in the hood.
Stuff like reminds u to stay praying. But when it is your time it is your time. Just like my mom and my best friend. N recently i just went to a funeral for my 1st cousin smh. So life is freak crazy. Smh. As child or teenager. This movie and that other one scary me badly. John is great director rip to him..
The military discussion was Interesting from a different perspective. I'm from norfolk va, where one of the largest naval bases are located. Everyone here is connected to the military. So when a person decides to join the military here it's looked at no different than college. I always wondered what it's like in non military towns' opinions on the military.
Ricky: Ricky story is always a sad story to kids in the hood. The what if and regrets are always . For Ricky, I never thought about the after effects of what if he would have survived. But we know what would’ve happened… he would’ve ended up like Lil Chris. If he wouldn’t of went to the store and saw his ACT scores were high enough, and went on to play ball, we already saw the outcome of that in another movie that you’ve guys done a deep dive on, The Best Man. That’s how Rick‘s life supposed to have turned out. But like y’all said, unfortunately, the first shot ended Ricky’s career, and the second shot ended his life. 😢😢😢😢
Another banger👏🏾At 17:04...how bout we add to the gamble Laurence Fishburne's role in the 1979 Vietnam War-based film, Apocalypse Now? I like to think John Singleton was aware of that😉
Ricky wasn’t about that life unlike his brother dough boy who was about that life. He was trying to get out the hood got a football scholarship to a very top college. Hey got killed over something dump. Ricky mom definitely show favoritism towards him although Ricky wasn’t always innocent
Oh my God that just like me with Steel Magnolia. I always think the daughter is going to live. But you know she is not. Can yall cover that one with Sally F and Julie R. I love that freaking movie one of my favorite.❤
Currently serving 13 years in. Best decision I’ve made, sets you up for the long haul and at the end of the day, it’s the same as being in the civilian world with a few perks!
It also shows how young these guys are. They're kids. They can't even think straight under the diress of Ricky being shot. Their first instinct should've been to throw him in the car and drive him to the hospital or call an ambulance. They threw him in the car and took his corpse home because home is our comfort our safe-haven where nothing can go wrong. In doing so, his mother, girlfriend, and son are now traumatized having seen his dead blood soaked body on the couch. It's all so sad.
What hit the most then Ricky death, that Doughboy was blame for Ricky death. His momma and Ricky baby momma, hated and blamed him for that. Yet, he died too in the end of the film. Even though it wasn’t sure how he was killed, but it sad that doughboy was unwanted and unloved. It sad that his mom gave up on Doughboy and favor Ricky, she completely ignoring or forgetting Doughboy is her kid too. Doughboy had it harder in life than Ricky, because Doughboy was a disappointed to her. I think she doesn’t care or at least less care for Doughboy, because Ricky is the golden boy in her eyes.
I Kno these two movies aren't connected but I feel like Morris chestnut character in the best man is what Ricky life would have look like if he actually made it
Morning, guys. Wow, Cheri, i had a similar college experience to you. My parents helped me with money throughout...putting money into my qccount. And....yes.. the money would be all gone in like a couple of weeks, lol.
What's weird about this is that in this film, Cuba Gooding Jr.'s character had a better understanding of what to do in that situation, whereas two years later, he was in "Judgment Night," his character was a similar situation, but Mike was not as mature as Tre was. I just thought I'd make a comment about that because I had watched "Judgment Night" recently.
52:23 Doughboy's death was inevitable. Ferris was a blood, it's implied that Doughboy is either a crip or a crip affiliate. It was a matter of time that someone would retaliate for killing Ferris crew. Doughboy said it himself in that last conversation with Tre, that someone may come back to smoke him.
Wow, yall are hitting some good points on this. One I wish I would have known you can join the Coast Gard cause that's military and you work in beach towns. Second, soo much of this breakdown shows soo many of the horrible issues we as blacks do to each other. IDGAF Brenda was a crap ass mom, my mom sold everything she had and got me out the hood soon as I got in trouble the first time. Second, how the hell his baby mama start cooking shit without all the ingredients, if I'm making my wife dinner, I buy all the fixings first thing in the morning. Also Doe boy was jealous, Ricky had in house 🐈 plus a future. Another thing dude really got killed because he bumped into someone and didn't say "excuse me sir." That's the most pathetic part. You can break down every detail but a simple "excuse me brother I didn't mean to walk into you." That would have saved his life. That's fucking pathetic that he died over ego by people that got killed over ego and really Doe boy was the only pure soul in the movie. He was a product of his environment trying to be the best man he could.
And his bff save his life for sure. I would had saw it like that. Just like my bff friend n i am not trying to cry. She never told me she was sic..bc she knew i couldn't handle it. It all happened so fast. My bff was my sec mom she was older than me. But she never show she was sic. Elinor was Elinor when she when we were together. She was truly my Mary Poppins. I can't tell u how much I miss my friend and my mom..❤
Do love how the father check the son with the gun. It was so powerful. You think u bad know bc u got a gun. U want to kill someone. Shoot me. I only got one son. I am sorry about your friend. That their problem. R something like that. It was so powerful and good.
Rickeyyyy🗣️ It was hood realistic that Doughboy lost his life as well but movie wise, it would been nice if they would have gave him the Franklin Saint special tbh.
"RICCCCKKKYYY" and I agree never understastood why they took him home but you guys made a great point I never thought about before they were stunned shocked and that was their way of dealing with it
Question is it possible the dude Trey fought in. The elementary school is the fool that pointed out ricky at the end posssibly Alledigy ? I always wondered about that
10 year old me knew he was gone die the minute he stopped to pee cause how your adrenaline not take over firstly secondly ricky was just too mentally sheltered which was his momma fault. He only was into football because his daddy gave him a football he only hung with trey cause his momma wanted furious and they always wanna make it seem like ricky is better when doughboy was actually the smart sibling just wasnt given a chance....Ricky in my opinion is the male Diamond from players club as far as privilege goes. Cause who told you a gangsta wouldn't shoot you when they literally ride around with a shot gun...clearly used to momma making everything better and so used to doughboy protecting him...cause how ricky didnt have these problems until dough out of jail and they at the strip...what did you do before he got out that kept you safe? do that now smh but noooo we feeling ourselves cause the big brother and his friends are there. cause it was that football in the beginning of the movie all over again
The reason why Ricky's death hits so hard is because, for a lot of us we grew up with a ricky and we had high hopes for a friend that wasn't in the hood we saw their demise. It hits close to home for a lot of us
I watched this movie so many times but I can remember when the Dad was telling Trey you gone see how “they end up”… letting us know one week later Doe boy loses his life is just the reality how violence was betrayed out there in south central LA
And the craziest part about this movie is….life went on….if you think about what happens after the events of the movie in universe, then life went on life nothing happend and that is probably the most realistic part of the film
It hits so hard because it happens like this too often in real life. Quite often, the ones who live their lives on the edge, are usually the one who seem to survive longer than the ones who wanna be humble& live a modest life. I'm from LA, & im 38 this type of stuff happens a lot💯 lost about 8 people in my graduating class b4 graduation 🎓💯
It hit hard for me because of the Shakespearean timing of the test results being delivered as he angrily walks towards his demise. If the test scores are delivered 2 minutes earlier a tragedy I likely avoided.
To be honest Tre doesn't have any siblings or close in age cousins that we know of so of course he thinks you're not supposed to fight with your brother. Man do you know how many shoving matches I've gotten into with my brother
My aunt took me and my cousin to see this movie when I was 15 and that scene stuck with me days after that. I can’t even watch this movie now without hoping that Ricky doesn’t get shot
Rickkkkyyyy .Boyz in the hood serves a completely different purpose than menace 2 society. Even doughboy and his set are more or less normal. Dough sells his dimes of crack and goes back in the house. You dont actually see them do anything that isn't self defense until the end of the film. Cane and O are so far gone, whereas Ricky and Tre arent. Brenda blames Dough for Ricky being a casualty to the dirt he was doing but If anything, Dough probably extended Ricky's time on this planet. Because he probably would have gotten blown up on Crenshaw (and several times I'm sure off screen) if it wasnt for Dough. The tragic lack of a street IQ was Ricky's downfall, and if Brenda is looking for anyone to blame, if there is anyone ( i personally dont see it as anyones fault other than the crew that shot him), its got to be herself. This "after school special" as Easy put it was just as necessary as the other.
Maybe because I am desensitized, it hurt when I saw it when I was 6. But Sharif in Menace II Society was so unexpected and he was already on righteous path. Menace just had me feeling hopeless at the end. Boyz had hopeful due to Tre making out, yet sad due to Ricky and Doughboy.. Ricky should have been more aware of his surroundings at the moment, he knew he was in danger, he should have paid more attention. And maybe zigzagged when he ran.....like Rickon Stark on Game of Thrones I agree with the point that if Doughboy hadnt existed, Ricky was doomed from the jump. He was innocent, and naive. Ferris wasn't just a banger, he was a bully. Bullies are always gonna target those they deam weaker than them, and to them...Goodness=Weakness
Hot take: Doughboys death hit harder because it came out of nowhere. Just when you thought the movie was ended, boom, they got him too. It just gave you a hopeless feeling that it'll never end in the hood. Classic movie!

And Tre should’ve told Ricky that the blood gang (men in the red car) pulled a gun on Tre a few days earlier.
@@nessydelight470 Dude still wouldn't take Tre seriously.
He wasn’t bright I think.
Was Doughboy in a gang?
@@AxiomAmnesia I always thought he was in the crips.
@@a84c1 I have heard people say this, but we never see him with anyone but his couple of friends from the block.
yeah i was assuming so too, but the movie never technically showed they were in a gang, but the other crew was red and Cube's crew was likely blue
@@317MaseX Darrin and his Set were Rolling 63 Crips.
Ricky's death in that movie still hits me hard😢😢😢😢😢😢 rest n peace Lloyd Avery ❤❤❤ love yu pretty boy
This movie has always shown, in my opinion the difference in having 2 parents weather or not they remain together
Also the difference in how single mothers treat children from different fathers.
Brenda wasn't a horrible person or mom, but she did a huge disservice to Ricky and Dough both.
Here's my theory:
Doughboy is way too street smart to get axed off in the epilogue, the Filmmakers said two weeks after Ricky got buried, Darrin gets murdered but there's no implication as to "how he got murdered".
That checks out. Didn’t have to be one of Ferris’ boys
Yes , I think pointing out Doughboys demise shows the cycle of violence . The whole premise of the movie
Cups hands around mouth "RICKEYYYYYY" Great work as always ❤
😊 thank you
RICKY….
I still asked the question every time I watch this masterpiece…
“Why couldn’t he just dip into a yard instead of running STRAIGHT?” But after listening to y’all, Ricky not taking his surroundings seriously makes sense.
This is still one of the greatest and most brutal deaths in a hood movie thanks you two for taking me back to my childhood I miss the 90s big time.
I think the hood is a state of mind. That’s why Ferrous saw no need to leave.
Can you do a breakdown of the people who killed Ricky and why? RICKY!!!!
No Ambulance came got Ricky or the Coroner’s Office Van
RIP Lloyd Avery II. It's crazy what happened to him in Prison
i will never understand why ricky ran in a straight line. granted, he may have gotten shot either way, but my man ran in a straight line like he was trying to make a touchdown...
We all say that but if you've ever really been shot at you know it really wouldn't have matter he was stuck in that alleyway
@@mauricerosser-hendrix1158 yeah that's true. given the situation, it could have been panic from ricky as well. something i also noticed was it did seem like ricky knew he couldn't escape based on his facial expression.
@cabbitness1983 I've been in a similar situation and pretty much knew I was going to die, I didn't even run I started walking up to them with the thought of giving them a black eye before I die. Then the police drove down the street and they ran off, and I got to live
@@mauricerosser-hendrix1158 wow, that must have been scary. But it's also amazing you had the fortitude to be like if I'm going out, I'm taking someone with me.
@@cabbitness1983 keep in mind, the last time Ricky saw them fire off before the time he got unalived, it was a FULLY AUTOMATIC they were letting off.. subconscious is a MF
I think Ricky’s death showed that you can become a product of your environment even if you are not involved in the gang life. We all wanted better for him. We almost expected doughboy to be killed because of his behavior but Ricky just wanted to play football and get out the hood.
RICCCCCKKKKKKYYYYY!!!!!
Love the channel y'all. I been rockn with y'all for bout 2yrs.
Thank you so much! ❤️
I believe yall should do a video on leaving the hood vs changing the hood.
I like this!
I have the exact same reaction when I see it. He was on his way out, and some genuine bs took him out. It's hard to see, even on screen, the REALITY that so many of us have witnessed or even experienced. My brother was killed at 16yo by his "friend " (pistol to his head) over a girl.
I'm sorry about your brother. My brother was murdered too.
@@AxiomAmnesia Prayers for peace for us both. 😢
@@sweetjanejonez Ditto. Also R.I.P. to Chicago's Hope Benji Wilson 1967-1984 and Brockton/Boston Singer Chris Bender 1972-1991 both were gunned down over Asinine nonsense.
Yes please do an analysis on Brenda
The military discussion was Interesting from a different perspective.
I'm from norfolk va, where one of the largest naval bases are located. Everyone here is connected to the military. So when a person decides to join the military here it's looked at no different than college. I always wondered what it's like in non military towns' opinions on the military.
Great point that how you feel about the military and anything else is really impacted by where you're from.
I like to think John Singleton was aware of that😉
Facts
Bc it was the d€@+h of talent & a better life. Hopes & dreams that will never be realized😢
I got out the Army in 2003 and STILL taking advantage of the benefits.
Yeah, it can really help a lot!
Ricky wasn’t about that life unlike his brother dough boy who was about that life. He was trying to get out the hood got a football scholarship to a very top college. Hey got killed over something dump. Ricky mom definitely show favoritism towards him although Ricky wasn’t always innocent
PLEASE DO A VIDEO ABOUT THE MOTHER. She was the cause of much of the problems with both Doughboy and Ricky.
Oh my God that just like me with Steel Magnolia. I always think the daughter is going to live. But you know she is not. Can yall cover that one with Sally F and Julie R. I love that freaking movie one of my favorite.❤
Yes Steel Magnolias and Terms of Endearment leave me in tears every time!
That scene where they were crying ohhhh I lost it!!!!!That tore me up evertime I see this movie!!!! I love this channel and the commentary is fire
Thank you so much!
Currently serving 13 years in. Best decision I’ve made, sets you up for the long haul and at the end of the day, it’s the same as being in the civilian world with a few perks!
Ive always felt worse for dough that may be because my life was more like his but rick was all he had he had no one else
Can yall do Holiday Heart that is right up yall alley..
Hey from Tuskegee 💕✌🏾👋🏾
Heyyyy!!! I've got strong ties from there as well! ❤️❤️❤️
@ 29:41..."lackin"
I Kno these two movies aren't connected but I feel like Morris chestnut character in the best man is what Ricky life would have look like if he actually made it
Yes me and my mom use to say that all time lol
Morning, guys. Wow, Cheri, i had a similar college experience to you. My parents helped me with money throughout...putting money into my qccount. And....yes.. the money would be all gone in like a couple of weeks, lol.
My money was gone same day or at least by the end of the weekend! 😆😂😆
Damn man thank y’all for the birthday present 😂
Happy birthday!
The scene was traumatizing real when i watched as child ..still hard to watch.
What?
Do love how the father check the son with the gun. It was so powerful. You think u bad know bc u got a gun. U want to kill someone. Shoot me. I only got one son. I am sorry about your friend. That their problem. R something like that. It was so powerful and good.
He got just over the minimum score to go to college, they show this after he died and his mom is reading the letter
Ricky ❤
Rickeyyyy🗣️ It was hood realistic that Doughboy lost his life as well but movie wise, it would been nice if they would have gave him the Franklin Saint special tbh.
I play the Illinois lottery. Pick 3 and Pick 4. 50 cent Box, Straight and Box 50-50.
I want to see a video with Angela’s character Tre’s mom and Dough boys mom that would be interesting
"RICCCCKKKYYY" and I agree never understastood why they took him home but you guys made a great point I never thought about before they were stunned shocked and that was their way of dealing with it
They didn’t wanna leave Ricky’s body there
Question is it possible the dude Trey fought in.
The baby dose scream bc the mom scream 1st. The lady playing mom is great actress..
He cried cause she screamed is his damn ear.
It hit hard for me because of the Shakespearean timing of the test results being delivered as he angrily walks towards his demise. If the test scores are delivered 2 minutes earlier a tragedy I likely avoided.
Me and Brother was just talking about that. The dramatic after math at the house will make a mother 😢
When it came to Meance To Society....that is a raw depth of how youth are influenced by street violence and gangs.
To be honest Tre doesn't have any siblings or close in age cousins that we know of so of course he thinks you're not supposed to fight with your brother. Man do you know how many shoving matches I've gotten into with my brother
Ricky!!!
RIP Pretty Ricky Fontain...oh wrong Ricky.
My aunt took me and my cousin to see this movie when I was 15 and that scene stuck with me days after that. I can’t even watch this movie now without hoping that Ricky doesn’t get shot
It's like one of those movies where you know the ending but hope that somehow this time the tragedy will be avoided.
He should of not went to get the corn meal would of prevented all that madness
In my opinion, Doughboy shouldn't have been killed off. The movie should have ended with Doughboy leaving the hood just like Trey.
Rickkkkyyyy
.Boyz in the hood serves a completely different purpose than menace 2 society.
Please do the analysis on the mom!
And maybe zigzagged when he ran.....like Rickon Stark on Game of Thrones
I agree with the point that if Doughboy hadnt existed, Ricky was doomed from the jump. He was innocent, and naive. Ferris wasn't just a banger, he was a bully. Bullies are always gonna target those they deam weaker than them, and to them...Goodness=Weakness
Sharif was a hard one!
