Why Boeing Built The 717 And What Makes It Special

  • Originally known as the MD-95, the Boeing 717 was first delivered in 1999 and designed for the 100-seat market. In fact, the 717 wasn’t actually built by Boeing. Rather, it was an aircraft developed by competitor McDonnell Douglas. However, Boeing adopted the aircraft into its portfolio when it acquired McDonnell Douglas in 1997.

    The Dc-9/717 series planes are an underrated engineering marvel. Part of the reason Boeing dumped the design is they didn’t like it “competing” with the 737 (which it really wasn’t as 737 was getting larger and larger). The fact that many airlines are literally flying their fleets into the ground 20 years after the end of production shows what a great design it is.

      The fact that the basic airframe was designed in an earlier era is a big plus for the frequent take-offs and landings of the customers mentioned. The engineering margins hadn't been shaved down by computer aided design, so it's very robust.

      @JETZcorp 3 роки тому +15

      Another factor on the structural end is that it's a McDonnell Douglas aircraft. McD had a number of failings, but building strong, durable airframes wasn't one of them. They engineered and tested their planes for more hours and more cycles than Boeing or Airbus. For an airline like Hawaiian doing a huge number of short hops, that is a massive advantage. They found that out the hard way after they fatigued some 737s to death (literally in one case, sadly) well before the anticipated number of years. If you replace your airplanes after 10 years in order to get the greater efficiency of new models, this long life is no advantage; it just costs more. McD excelled where long life mattered. That's why so many cargo airlines still fly ancient, indestructible, but heavy DC-10s.

      Anyone noticing a theme here? Boeing abandons brilliant models like the 717 and the 757 that airlines are desperately clinging to for lack of viable options. The A220 is disposable compared to the 717, and even the mightiest A321, while more fuel efficient, is no match for the ridiculously powerful, reliable, versatile and bulletproof 757. Yet Boeing treats these still-desirable birds like a regrettable one night stand. Because clearly Boeing knows better, right. I mean the 737 is the only aircraft you’ll ever need….right?

    Boeing missed a HUGE opportunity with the 717 IMO. Not building the projected MD-95-50 / 717-300 was a mistake. This airplane would have been a big sucess and a lot of "Blue Chip" Airlines wanted it, but Boeing does not wanted to hurt the 737-700/-800 sales with that airplane. The consequence was that most of these Airlines interested in the 717-300 ended up ordering Airbuses. A 717-300 would have made the whole 717 program a lot more attractive. Of course Boeing would have lost some 737 sales, but also they would have got some orders from Airlines that now ordered the big Embraers and Airbus.

      If it was such a great airplane, why didn't anyone buy it? You don't keep building something that no one wants. And yes, twenty years later the market is different. 717 would be a dog on fuel burn per seat today.

    Hi. I worked on every DC -9 built all MD80 series and MD90 and MD95 also on DC10, KC10 , plus MD11. The DC9 was designed at Long Beach by DAC. One of the first customers, with a large order , was Air Canada. Because of their order all DC9 wing production was given to DeHavilland Canada. Their factory was at Malton Ontario, at Toronto International airport, now Pearson airport. All DAC and McDonnel commercial wings from then on were built at that plant . All of those wings were shipped by rail to Long Beach. When DHC could no longer handle the program DAC stepped in and started DAC Canada. Later on DAC merged with McD. When the MD95 program started it was a joint venture with Hyundai of South Korea. Hyundai wanted to get into commercial aircraft. Wings were built at the Canada plant and in Korea. The wings were shipped to Palm Dale CA for marry up and then again by road to Long Beach for final assembly. Boeing then took over, finished off the remaining aircraft and then shut all McD production down and changed the model name to 717. The Canada factory was demolished. The same factory where the famous Avro CF105 Arrow was built. dcniner01.

      Thank you for the info. I spent plenty of time with the 717 in production in Long Beach as airline rep/VP. After the initial bugs were worked out, I just adored the aircraft. At the first flight i got to know the German professor who designed the BMW/RR engines, which were marvelous powerplants. I was a bit hesitant with a Korean-built wing, but I came to appreciate their desire for quality. The plane was a wonder to fly, operate and maintain. In short, if I could have chosen a personal aircraft for myself (if I could ever afford it), without doubt it would be a 717.

They also served us freshly baked chocolate chip cookies which was a surprise. Since then I haven’t had the opportunity to fly in another 717 since they have been retired by many carriers by now. I think it's a little bit different, Boeing bought MD completely, while Airbus didn't buy BBD, they only took control of the C series program, and renamed it to fit better into their own name system.
      The A 220, former C series is also different from the 717, because it is a completely new aircraft type using state of the art technology, while the 717 is a modernized DC9 from long ago. That makes the 717 not a bad plane, but the A220 uses modern technology and is mainly focusing on fuel efficiency.
      Airbus got this aircraft for very little financial reccources, it was a good deal for them. The order list for the 320 family is also extremely long, so they can offer the 220 without cannibalizing the 320s.

    After flying both as captain for a US airline I can assure you the Dc9/717 is the better aircraft both for safety and especially for reliability! Especially in the 100-150 passenger configuration. The Dc9 rides better in weather (higher wing loading)is quieter and a much more stable aircraft in yaw. Above the 150 seat configuration the 737 starts to beat it out, but by then you should probably be using the 757 as it is a far superior aircraft in that seating configuration.

    • @rrknl5187
      @rrknl5187 4 роки тому

      I agree about the wing loading, way better ride in rough air. Also, an engine failure took less rudder....a lot less rudder.......
      The flip side is that I never got used to the deck angle being so high on approach.....always felt it was going to stall.

    • @FarmerTed
      @FarmerTed 4 роки тому

      RR KNL the dc9-10,30,50 had a much lower deck angle than 737 using 50 flaps and very similar using 40 flaps. The single engine approach 15* flaps was a high angle approach but not much more than single engine 737 approach. In a big crosswind the Dc9 was head and shoulders about the 737, I’ve had numerous landings above the demonstrated cross wind as it is a recommendation and not a limit unlike the Boeing.

    The MD-95/B717 was a great airplane to fly on the late Midwest Airlines about 10-15 years ago before it was bought and merged with Frontier. Until just before its demise, Midwest had a single class arrangement with wider, first-class style seats in a 2 x 2 arrangement (seat width was 20", and pitch was 34 or 35"... more than Coach, less than First). The 717 was perfect for that layout, because they only needed to "sacrifice" one traditional Coach seat to make that work. Had that been a 737 or A31x/32x, they would have had to give up two Coach seats. As nice as the 717 was compared to the older MD-88, one problem was that some of Midwest's routes were just a tad outside the 717's range (e.g., Seattle - Kansas City); for those routes, they had to use the longer-range MD-88. Just before the airline was sold/acquired, Midwest reverted some rows to standard 2 x 3 Coach seating to fit more passengers. When they were in the process of merging with Frontier, parent company Texas Pacific Group "retired" the MD-8x and 717s in favor of A319s from Frontier and Embraer E-Jets from Republic.

It's sad how the plane was tough to sell and 9/11 just made everything worse to market the plane but the airlines that got them absolutely love them. Such a treasure by the end of the day. Its reliable, flies in a good airline market and of course lots of fun to fly. I think it's such a scumbag move how Boeing declined the extra demand for 717's once airlines saw the 717 for what it truly is. Really it just took time and everyone that has them loves them. While the pandemic did have some of them get retired, I'm glad it didn't kill the fleet off entirely.

When Air Canada was really growing through the late 60's and 70's it was the ever reliable DC-9's that made the airline tick, and helped them become a large world class operation. Its worth mentioning that the BAC 111 which flew 2 years before the DC-9 really converted airlines in the USA to this type of aircraft. Aloha Airlines for example selected the One-Eleven as its first jet type for inter-island service. Braniff and Mohawk ordered their first ones in 1961 and 1962. It was eventually sold to 14 American airlines despite the efforts of the US Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) which blocked sales to various airlines. It was blatant protectionism because while it blocked Bonanza, Frontier and Ozark from buying the 111 it allowed Ozark and Frontier to buy the DC-9!
    The last flyable One-Eleven was retired by Northrop Grumman in May 2019 after serving as an F-35 testbed.

    The 717 is great but there is no need for new ones to be built. If Boeing competes with A220, the 736 is a better option. 7M6 would be pretty crazy to see.

      tjsynkral The 7M7 has sold poorly and the 736 sold even more poorly when it was produced. Based on this, a 7M6 wouldn’t work at all

    I really liked the 717. But I much prefer the ERJ 175 because of their wonderful 2-2 layout with lots of room for me, the passenger!
