  • I am not sure manufactures feel the need to do this to wooden handles but it needs to stop! I cant stand when companies "coat" wooden parts with that cheap lacquer poly stuff all it does is give the homeowner more headache down the road!

You’re absolutely right, Jay! That’s an awful finish they used on the newer one. They should leave it bare wood and let you decide how to finish it, if at all. Thanks for sharing!

I posted a video called save your back when handling firewood, just a quick vid on how log tongs are a game changer for tossing wood around.

I would send them an email. The rubber ends that you saw might be an upgrade to the peeling plastic.

You got it! Buy quality tools from the start.Home depot products are made to cheaper specifications than the same brand name at an industrial supplier. Still have my Jackson from 40 yrs ago. Had to replace the tire and cut a new black locust handle on the mill.

Grew up pouring concrete with "Sterling the Tough Guy" wheelbarrows, buy one and never have to buy another! You can get them with no air tires too!

    Good afternoon Jay.
I agree leave it bare wood..
I have three old single wheel ones.
All are steel.. I just couldn’t make my self get a Plastic one..
Mine are over 40 years old . Have had to replace tires but that’s understandable..
You have the right to express your opinion.. 👍👍👍
Just remember it next time when you spend your hard earned money..
Hope your having a great weekend.
As always stay safe and always be kind

When you buy a wheelbarrow you should look at it before you buy it, when you get a plastic wheelbarrow what do you expect, I’m sure there are wheelbarrows made out of metal with wooden or metal handles. They are still out there, but more expensive. When we shop price this is unfortunately what happens. Stay safe my friend

I agree Jay! They keep trying to reinvent the wheel……. barrow lmao. But seriously it’s just piss poor craftsmanship dreamt up by some guy wearing a suit and tie who’s never even used a wheelbarrow. Raw natural wood is perfect just the way it is. They don’t need to beautify it to sell it at the store just to disappoint the customer when the stuff blisters up and falls off. Lots of companies are doing the same stupid stuff and nothing is what it used to be. Thanks for sharing.

I have a grey plastic single wheel barrow from Craftsman that is about 15 years old. Mine cracked where it bolts to the frame. Similar to yours but the front is still intact. Also the tire is so dry rotted it won’t hold air. I’m going back to the metal kind with the hard wheel. Agree with you about leaving the handles raw wood.

I have a corona wheelbarrow. It's been pretty good but it's plastic and it's getting beat up. It's not up to the task of a firewood gig. I might try an Ace contractor wheelbarrow. Steel and has 2 tires like I prefer.

The issue is most people don’t know what they are supposed to do, so the manufacturer’s engineers who only see these as a product to justify their pay check and limit stupid lawsuits of faulty design injuries are grasping at straws on what to do, all tool handles should be bare natural wood, and the purchaser should sand and oil the handles of all wood tools!

    • @HomesteadJay
      @HomesteadJay  2 роки тому

Yeah I dont understand why dont they make a label that says "treat wood annually" that would solve the issue lol Thanks for tuning in!

@@HomesteadJay we can’t always understand engineers, but we can look at the way people abuse tools, then true to understand the engineer building a better mouse trap so to speak, this is an issue of the dog chasing its tail if you think about it! This is why when i was working in the electrical field,( 9 years ago min) i would buy the tub, and axle kits and wheels separately from the handles, which i would either purchase raw lumber or the cheapest wood handle possible then re work them into what I wanted by either sanding off any varnish and soaking in oil or shaping ruff cut 3x3 into workable handles! The last I heard from my former boss 11 out of 13 wheelbarrow were still functional and being abused daily on job sites, one was stolen, and one got crushed under a front end loader or something.
A few weeks ago, my sister, and former boss asked if I could make a few new handles, so i told her what I did, and now my brother in law is learning how to make replacement handles! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

Cant quite relate to this one, Jay. I held out on buying a wheel barrow and just last year my grandpa gave me his old wheel barrow. Its a steel body and the handles were hand made by another family member out of pallet parts. It's one of my most prized possessions.
