Underwater plants work wonders to clear and improve pond water as well. Not sure what David would recommend, but if the islands do not do the trick, consider adding some manageable pockets of underwater plants.

Entertaining video folks, thank you. On the Algae query - they are organisms that live mainly in the water and make their food through photosynthesis. Algae are different from plants in that they have no true leaves, roots, or stems. Seaweeds are algae. "Algae" is a plural noun; the singular form is "alga."

If I may say; it would balance well to have two longitudinal rows of David's floating plants, both from an aesthetic and practical (swimming) viewpoint. It would define the swimming area to the centre, and would be lovely swimming "through" a garden. Also I would build the submerged garden filtration beds at each end of the pool. I know its expensive , but would look fabulous and of course be beneficial for the eco-pool.

Design idea! The water trying to flow into the pool from the raised area of the garden surround might be seen as an opportunity to link the pool to a natural water system. You could add, on the upstream side, a series of basins spilling into each other, so as to let the water naturally aerate as it flows down into the pool. These basins could be populated with plants that would filter the water, taking out some of the potassium (which plants like to have to grow.) These don't have to be huge basins, but could be a number of small ones, with little apertures to create an aerating jet, or a wide mouth allowing a gentle flow. Think Villa d'Este 's 100 fountains, scaled down. If you block the cracks as you are now doing, the accumulated water pressure will act as a force against the wall of the pool, and add damage over time to what has already happened. So really, the ornamental basins and spills or jets would be a savings, over time. Other idea (kinda obvious): look about upstream and see whether some source of fertilizer is contributing to the water quality and giving the algae something on which to live. Lawns? Livestock?

Your pool expert is definitely up to Mapperton standards of personality and "eccentricity" but of course I see he knows his stuff. I might have a look on UA-cam for him. I love those natural swimming pools. I think to transform your long canal formal pool to one of those would be a good 21st century addition to your centuries old home. A cold water outside dip would not invigorate me. It would send me right back to bed to recover! It'll be enjoyable to watch the work progress.

A possible suggestion would be a central large floating island with a large scale fountain. It will help aerate the water, introduce different types of plants, give bubbles into the water with surface oxygen, and valuable movement. I know this is a feature that is used at Biltmore and they do not deal with hardly any algae. I've seen that they have water lilies, fountain features, floating islands, Birds of Paradise plants, and certain fish within their pools.

  • @deba4537

And another idea: consider installing a drainage system above the wall, just as one would normally do when building a retaining wall. A perf pipe would be installed below grade, wrapped in drain rock and filter fabric, somewhere at least a few feet below the surface. The pipe directs the water to where it is wanted, rather than accumulating behind the wall of the pool and having to find its own way. If there is no natural water course nearby for the water to join, it could be directed underground through a series of dry wells, also underground. (Note that the only situation in which this is not a good idea is one of construction on hilly slopes with a layer of clay.)

When further along, what types of “ground fish” will be used to help eliminate any solid wastes before the algae blooming cycle can start again? I would recommend a plecostamus. They can grow quite large. We used one in our pond here in the states and had beautiful water. Also, another idea to throw out before the pool is refilled, what physical system will be put in place to remove the solid wastes, with out using any chemicals. My thinking is running an evacuation pipe down the center and then having a gravity fed system. In the system, using things like screens, cloths, charcoal, spun fibers and so on. By my estimations this should only require maintenance three or four times a year. Feel free to contact me if you’d like to delve the vast reaches in my often one track mind

I don't know what your budgetary and preservationist limitations on this project are but after the leaks are patched, if there's a British equivalent of Rhino Liner that could be applied below the waterline, you'd have a durable watertight layer that might even strengthen the pool walls (I mean, I've seen a test where it was used to bombproof a building). And it's black, so it would make the pool more reflective too.
edit: Oh wait... possible toxicity... never mind. shouldn't be out here commenting on a Saturday night.
