    Super Cute Animals
    Nothing in nature happens by accident, animals are cute for a whole variety of different reasons. We investigate the four categories of cute in the animal kingdom: cute looking, cute acting, cute sounding and cute manipulation, and in doing so we will reveal the scientific stories behind why animals are cute.
    "Welcome to Earth Unplugged! We make films about the incredible natural world, we investigate the conundrums, quirks and beautiful science of our amazing planet, delving into the BBC vaults and mixing it up with our own stuff to take a brand new look at Earth.

    The greatest appeal to humans (of all ages) is the panda's beautiful childlike innocent look & its delightful carefree childlike play activities.
    First, its big round head is blessed with a pair of big black eye patches & matching black ears on top of its sparkling white furry head. The eye patches make their eyes look so much bigger & outstanding than all other animals. Thus, the composite picture of its head is simply stunning & lovable !!!
    Second, the black & white contrast is so dramatic that its duel-colour coat attracts much more attention than other single coloured animals. Other animals with a black & white coat ( e.g. zebras, Emperor Penguins, ... ) also share the same degree of human admiration.

    One thing many people do not realize is that giant pandas are formidable fighters. Their bite is extremely strong, and are very territorial in the wild. There are several scientific records of pandas fighting off black bears, leopards and packs of dholes. They are also the smartest of the bears with the highest encephalization quotient, though this is more likely an adaptation to cope with the intoxicating effect of the bamboo.

    haha, I think around the time they lost the taste for meat and realised bamboo was everywhere is around when their population started to decline. "Why have sex when we can keep eating?!"

      Maybe because bamboo is easier to catch...and very abundant in the past. But they eat 1% very small animals, yet.

    If panda didn't have a head, no matter what the size, would not be able to see, or hear, or breathe, or eat. Not much of a life without a head, of any size.

    So why haven't the lost their meat eating teeth? Wouldn't it be far more efficient if they were shaped like cows teeth?

    • @aremithia
      @aremithia 6 років тому +1

      My uneducated guess is: They still need meat eating teeth to bite the bamboo to pieces?

    • @King_Hehehe
      @King_Hehehe 6 років тому

      Probably because the trait isn't detrimental enough to evolve out, since as bears they already had sharp canines when they switched to an all-bamboo diet. Their canines are noticeably smaller than other bears, but they can still be used for defense against potential threats if need be.

    • @nightjarflying
      @nightjarflying 6 років тому

      Giant pandas are not totally vegetarian - they will eat meat & have been known to raid penned up livestock at farms [giant pandas are slow, but incredibly strong - like a mini-gorilla]. It is probably a smart evolutionary move to retain the ability to process meat when it's a bad bamboo year.

      Cows have flat teeth for grinding grass, while pandas have crested molars for crunching things - similar to a hyena, but instead of bones, bamboo.

    Pandas are a failed species

    • @nightjarflying
      @nightjarflying 6 років тому +17

      You mean giant pandas. They are not a failed species - they've been doing well for five million years - a lot longer than Homo sapiens sapiens. If your argument is that their population is small then so are a few species of mammals from the elephant to the big cats & all for one reason: humans.

    • @jaredj631
      @jaredj631 6 років тому +5

      nightjarflying my argument is that their path of evolution has led to a dead end. They have wasted their 5 million years becoming super specialized charismatic mega-fauna. they have no ability to adapt their only saving grace is that humans will take them in to protect them because they’re cute.

    • @nightjarflying
      @nightjarflying 6 років тому +7

      They do have the ability to adapt as do all organisms - how do you think they went from a typical bear's mixed diet to a specialized diet while giving up hibernation? Specialization is not necessarily a dead end & it was advantageous until recently to concentrate on bamboo - there is no competition in their niche at all except for Man who cut back their habitat. They are known to sometimes hunt for pikas & other small rodents so they have a certain flexibility. They are no more a dead end than all the other species we have put under pressure or driven to extinction.

    • @jaredj631
      @jaredj631 6 років тому +2

      nightjarflying to me having to eat for 16 hours a day is a dead end. That is species last attempt given their low intelligence compared other bears, I think they’ll be extinct in the wild eventually. Even if it wasn’t for mankind. Natural climate event could’ve easily changed the ecosystem from having huge amounts of bamboo, blight 4 Instance Could wipe out huge forests and has.
