Hahahahaha. In this specific instance, I think that it’s not really worth it either way. But in general, I’ve found that the pro grade paints are worth it! They usually perform a bit better as far as smoothness of use goes, and if you’re going to hang them on your wall or something....you can be relatively certain it’ll look the same for at least a couple of years. If not a century.

Hopefully, it always results in joy. =^.^= and is say that, knowing you’ve got a spectrum of paints from Koi to M Graham....yeah, these aren’t really worth adding to your collection. They’re not even cheap enough for us in the states to use as a decent travel palette that you take with you to places and wouldn’t be heartbroken if it ended up getting lost. Apparently they’re super affordable in Germany, though, and that totally changes things!

I had the exact same feelings about Lukas, I put them away in a drawer for the last year and took out my Mission Gold instead! If I wanted pans and not tubes I would grab my White Nights/St.Petersburg.
This was a really nice comparison of the two. I find that the tube version of the student grade Lukas paint, is much better than the pan version, imo. However, I absolutely adore my Lukas 1862 paints, they're some of my favorites! :)

I’d love to know why if you have the time to share it with all us out here on the internets. =^.^= I know Mikki, who’s lending me these paints, REALLY loves them so I think it would be great to hear more from people who have experience with them and adore them! I totally believe the tube version of the student grade is better. Usually, tube paints for student grade seem to be slightly better than their panned equivalents. I wonder what they change about the formula between the two!
I swore I replied to this, but apparently that was only in my head LOL! Honestly, when I paint with them, I don't feel frustrated. In all my experiences, they've flowed beautifully across my paper, and stay vibrant, even when dried. I suppose the flow can depend on the paper, as well as the paint. Every time I mix them, they're always nice clean mixes, and I don't worry about mixing weird murky colors. As you said in the video, they layer well too! Apparently I'm singing a ballad of love to them hahahaha. Maybe it's just because I haven't REALLY experienced high quality paints (Sennelier, Dan Smith, ect.), but this set makes me happy! Plus, I'm lazy, and the convenient color mixes are everything xD
Yo, convenient color mixes are life. Like, knowing how to mix colors is definitely an important skill (....I say as I edit a video that’s literally all about color mixing in gouache.....) but convenience colors? Well, they’re just gosh darn convenient. Saves you a lot of time and frustration!
Great video Kat! 😁 Its cool that you got to try them both out side by side. I have the same Lukas student set, but hubby uses those. I got them in a smart art box, but never tried them. The only question I have is, do the Lukas paint differently on 100% cotton paper? That's the only thing I can think of that might change a little bit on how they perform. Your ballerinas came out wonderfully. 😃
You know what actually, I have no idea. And I could test them on cotton paper if I really wanted to.....but I’d kind of rather not waste the paper. =>.

All of the paints in the section of recommended paints are ones I stand behind. =^.^= they’re not CHEAP, like $10, but the Daniel Smith essentials set is like $30 it something and is BY FAR my favorite brand of paint.
Hahah, I’m happy to help! Knowing that you’ve likely already got a nice collection of paints to pull from, I don’t really think they’d be worth spending the extra money on. Definitely good to try out, but I’m not sure they’ve even made it into my top 10 favorite paints, if I’m honest. But keep in mind, there ARE people who absolutely LOVE these paints, so they definitely have great reviews depending on whose opinions you usually share!
A couple of people have said that the tubes are better than the pans, though I find it both interesting and sort of reaffirming to know that you were meh on them at best. I wonder if that’s just because we have a ton of experience with different brands of paint? I’m not saying there’s anything bad about the 1862 paints-they’re perfectly serviceable.....I just......I don’t know. They didn’t thrill me.
A viewer in the comments brought up the point that, since they’re in Germany, Lukas are super affordable. So I guess specifically if anyone’s in Germany and these are way more affordable that here in the States, then these are worth it. Otherwise? Meh.

Still in the research phase, since I don't really have the money to invest in a new hobby right now. That way, I will have a good idea of what to get. :)
Oh, fabulous! It’s so exciting to be here while you’re starting your watercolor journey! I’m happy to recommend things and answer what questions I can. If you just want to test the waters and aren’t sure how much time and energy you want to invest in this adventure, my basic recommendations are to get the Prima Marketing Tropicals set, some simply Simmons or daler rowney brushes (or pentel aqua brushes!), and a bee paper watercolor journal (or their loose sheets of watercolor paper! Both are affordable enough but great quality. Though drastically different.) . If you want more profession paints but that are affordable, I FULLY back the Daniel Smith essentials set, which I honestly wish I’d jumped the gun and gotten before I ended up throwing away like $100 on tons of cheap stuff I didn’t like. Both paint sets are linked in the doobly doo of this video! I don’t have full reviews of any of those things up on this channel, but they’ve all been heavily used and mentioned throughout-especially during my inktober videos.
I have the Lukas Studio too and my Paynes Gray is a Paynes Gray. My came in a metal tin. The Pigment Informations are on the paper the pans are packed in also the infomations about lightfastness and opacity. 😊
At first I liked White Nights but when I compared them to other paints, DA, MG, WN and noticed they looked more opaque. Over time I replaced mine with Davinci, DS, couple Sennelier and WN. Now I have what I enjoy and American Journey makes DaVinci btw but I just went a bit at a time a got a good set. Nothing freaky. I mix many and my favorite sap over all of them is from Winsor and Newton.
I figured out how to put the half pans in on my Schmincke set on my own after realizing they had to be at an angle, it was pretty cool realizing how those tabs worked!
Love your cat! Probably because he looks just like mine! You can see the fillers in the student grade as soon as you open it. If I had known when I started not to get student grade, I would have not wasted my money. I gave them all away to my friends' 6 year old. 😃 Bty thanks for the video
I've used their student quality paint before and their not bad for travel but if they ran out I'd just refill the pans with grumbacher academy or cotman paints since the paints aren't really impressive but on the rare occasion where I travel and paint I don't tend to layer very much (so the layering issue doesn't affect me) due to time restrictions, I'd only reuse the case because I've decorated it and I don't mind plastic palettes that much. A note about the White Nights: I have the 24 full pan set (although I've added Turquoise which is really nice btw and some purple pink I lost the label to from them) and their quite nice in my opinion but not an "oh my god you have to get this!!1!!!1!!" quality but still a great option, the best part to me is that they come in full pans for a great price to quality ratio (bang for your buck) since I hate working with small pans and big brushes.
Yeah, I agree with your assessment of both the Lukas studio paints (and just refilling them with something else when they run out. I don’t mind the plastic palette either, but I know they’re less preferred....and easier for me personally to break because I’m a disaster. =>.

I think the price value of Lukas paints really shines in their chubby 24mL tubes rather than pan sets. Their 24mL tubes are competitive with 15 mL tubes from other brands (and even 5 mL tubes from some more expensive brands) They're maybe not ideal price-wise if you're looking for a beginner "kit" but if you're an artist looking for big tubes of your favourite colours they're a great deal. I just bought a few tubes because I'm teaching workshops where I'm doling out sample palettes to attendees, and I'm thrilled with the value/money I'm getting with the Lukas paints.
Yes, exactly. Student grade paints just don't cut it for the layers and layers of glazing in my art. I want to give students good materials so they'll have a good chance of success but I'm not about to start doling out the most expensive paints in my palette. I just want a few bright, transparent colours with decent pigment load and glazing ability. I got some big tubes on sale from Lukas and Da Vinci and they're perfect. And actually I'm pretty blown away with some of them, including that magenta you like. Although I bought the Lukas Magenta for students, I think I might like it even better than my old standby Purple Magenta by Schmincke, made with the same pigment. And it's about half the price.
That magenta was definitely my favorite, and I could certainly see having a tube of it handy being useful! Especially because I’m betting the wet paint is even more transparent and pretty. I don’t have a lot of magenta in my collection!
In general PR122 is a great and underrated pigment, IM0. It's a wonderful vibrant and transparent primary magenta. The Lukas version is wonderful, completely transparent and high tinting out of the tube. I haven't had a chance to fully dry/cure it, but so far it seems to rewet quite readily as well.
I have never even heard of the Lucas paints but I’m surprised on the similarities between the professional and the student grade. Why you tease with the White Nights? I’d love to know ‘the big deal’ about them as they seem comparable to the Winsor and Newton professional line. I’ve only gotten one tube of Mission Gold to try out and it came out super soupy:( Almost as if the components are separated. Thanks for the review!
I mean, I tease with the white nights because they’re on my list of eventual things to review. :D I’ve literally had them in a basket on my wall for months but since I only do one video a week, it’s a bit hard to get to everything when they’re SO MUCH I want to do! If you want a short six word review on them though: “I’ve used them. I like them.” And yeah, it’s kind of interesting and strange to see a lot of similarities between the professional and student Lukas paints. The pro ones are definitely more layerable and glaze much better, so that’s a good feature of them! And I also like mission gold, but if it came out separated that’s not a fault of the paint entirely-it’s natural for them to get separated if the tube has been sitting for a long time. You can usually just mix it back up without too much trouble and it works just fine!

Fun fact! Mission Gold was the first set of professional paints I bought when I started this watercolor journey like a year and a half ago.....they made me understand much better what I had been missing. As such, there’s a special place in my heart for them, despite the fact that I don’t use them at all any more. ❤️
White nights is not even comparable to Windsor Newton unless maybe the Cotman which I haven’t used. Nothing wrong with them but the pigment is heavier and they don’t flow well for wet in wet. Some colors are off. Some are very good such as the cadmiums and Quins.
The Lukas student set you have was my first watercolor set (after a 4€ supermarket set..). My set came with a true paynes gray, which is my favorite color in the set. I got frustrated with them very soon, since it was impossible to layer the colors without them lifting and doing whatever they liked! They are also very opaque and chalky. The color selection is pretty cool though!
Yeah, the lifting on the student set was really noticeable! I think they went on really thick compared to the professional set, which was likely also part of the reason that they didn’t layer very well. I will concede that the color selection is a good one, but it’s also fairly standard for a 12 color set so while it’s a good set, it’s not really unique. Actually, the only palette I’ve seen in a long time that DOESNT stand by the formula of split primaries, a dark, and a couple of earth colors is the QOR palette that I think Marty Owings from Owings art recently reviewed. Oh! And a bunch of other people have said that my palette must’ve come with the wrong color because theirs really had Payne’s grey in it. So weird! I agree with you, I have the same tin of professional LUKAS paints and I’m disappointed in them as they do appear chalky when dry. My favorite is M Graham followed by by Daniel Smith, they have beautiful luminosity. I have not tried Senellier but they are on my wish list. 💞💫

What a cool collab idea! And both of you get to save money on purchasing another palette. And you got candy out of the deal! EXCELLENT. Yeaaaah, these paints aren't super intriguing to me. Those magentas and violets you managed to get are super vivid, but there's way too many opaque colours for my tastes. Also, as a huge fan of Payne's Grey in that it is probably my #2 favourite paint -- what was that paint in that palette?! Holy crow. I am offended on behalf of fellow Paynesgreythusiasts everywhere!
I know right?! Such liiiiies! It looks like the "swatch" on the actual box is brown too! I know Payne's Grey is a mix so it can usually vary a lot, but that isn't a red grey or a brown grey or an orange grey -- it's straight up brown.
I have a question 👋, do the cheaper watercolors leave a porous texture when dry? I mean, does it feel like dusty? 😟 That's my only concern about watercolors, and I'd thank so much your answer! ❤️
No, I never had that happen with these paints. I use them on regular watercolor papers (cotton, cellulose and mixed) and after they have dried I can run my fingers over them and they feel perfectly smooth like just a piece of paper. As long as you use these watercolors like one normally does, and do not apply them ridiculously heavy, they do not produce any weird layers on your paper.
I think you‘re spot on in this review - I like Lukas, but not because they are exceptional in quality. It‘s probably because they‘re really affordable here in Germany. I have my student set from them, and while I don‘t mind using them, I much prefer my Van Gogh set that costs only a few euros more. And, I entirely agree with their magenta! The great thing about Lukas is that their tubes are huge(24ml!) and I absolutely adore the chunky appearance :D Cobalt Turquoise from them is also very nice, one of a few companies making it with PG50 (I think Qor and M Graham are other ones?). Thank you for the review video, it was really enjoyable - and your cat is lovely! :)

I like that in these comments, I’m finding a lot of people have the same, specific opinions about which things about Lukas are good. Their chunky little (well, big actually) tubes are so cute!!! If they were more affordable here in the states, I think I’d be okay with recommending them a little more but....they’re so expensive here, and for the price they just aren’t high enough quality. I have the same studio set as you and Im staring at my set... I definitely have a paynes grey and not that brown that is named paynes grey... but i do wish I had that brown since the english red and raw umber is a little too "unnatural"? for me since they are either too cool or too warm.
Innnnnnnnnnnnnteresting. I wonder, how long have you had your set? Mine is over a year old at this point, and I’m wondering if perhaps the Payne’s grey aged into a brown somehow? I was able to mix a pretty decent Brown from the primary colors! That’s how I made her skin, but then I watered it down quite a bit and also added a bit more yellow to make it sort of ochre-y. Not sure what kind of browns you prefer, but I’m sure you can get some pretty decent ones out of this kit. Even without the help of my Payne’s Brown. =>.
I purchased mine a year ago from the German Amazon. The studio paynes grey was what made me fall in love with the colour and looks exactly like the professional set one. As for mixing browns, I dont have problems with it either using the set but I rather have that brown instead of the cooler one for convenience since it the one I use the most.... for almost everything :)
Ah, that totally makes sense! Convenience colors are called that for a reason-it’s great to not have to work hard for a color you’re going to use often! And it sounds like, perhaps, my set just came with the wrong color instead of Payne’s grey. =>.
Hahahahaa, I would be questioning why it was called a grey and not a brown for the sake of my sanity XD ... Just like Sennelier's Brown Pink Watercolour. That one got me so confused and still confuses me.
Lukas Cian is really good with magenta and a yellow as a primary triad. As a brand lukas student grade went to a very young beginner student and the 1862's are barely on ( maybe not) my top 12 watercolors.
I can definitely see that triad working well! SOME of their colors were very bright and clear, like the magenta, and a lot of other people have said they’re great in the tube form for both performance and value. Especially if you’re using them to teach others, so that makes a bit of sense to me that their primaries would be excellent.
Thanks for the review! I've been looking for a cheap good quality set to carry around for plein air painting. At first, I just wanted to take a few pans of my studio palettes, but I'm such a clutz, I'm afraid of losing them. Now though, I think I'll just do it. My Schmincke Historical Set of 12 full pans cost me just 63$ CAD. So maybe buying another set isn't worth it XD. Though they just started carrying the Sennelier at my local art shop and that test pack is really tempting.
Oh man, if you want help with setting up a travel palette I’ve got like five or so Travel palette vids up so far-they’re my favorite thing to do, probably. And I specifically build my palettes so I can swap paints in and out as needed! If you’re looking for a good set to plein air with, the Daniel smith essentials set I linked in the doobly doo is pretty much everything you’d need. It’s a split primaries set of 6 5ml tubes, and you could easily make a nice travel palette in an altoids tin or something like that if you wanted. I’d also recommend the sennelier aqua mini, which I didn’t link, and which lacks a cool red but actually has a super great range! I did a review and a mini palette build on the test kit if you want to check those out and see if it would suit you. Those are only if you care about the lightfastness of your work. If you’re just going to use a sketchbook to mess around and have fun, I still highly recommend the prima marketing paints. They are NOT lightfast, and will fade for sure....but for fun and practice? Can’t be beat.
Oh dang! Even at Jackson’s the Daniel smith pack is $50 for you?!?! :( boo. Hmmm. If your choice is coming down to the sennelier test pack of the holbein set, while Holbein isn’t my most preferred paint, it definitely gives you more color options than the sennelier test pack does. That means that if you had the holbein set, you could make multiple limited travel palettes and not feel like any one set was missing a color. And while I LOVE sennelier and think the test pack is an insane value, I did say multiple times that it really NEEDS a cool red. Like, basically screams for it. Also, the texture of holbein and schmincke are both very smooth and consistent, so you’d probably really find using Holbein familiar and pleasurable if you already love your schmincke paints. =^.^= But thats my two cents!

Recently I got a set of student grade Lukas paints as a travel set, and also because the set was only about 10 euros. Normally I use Sonnet paints which is the students version of White Nights and it just felt like a pretty big downgrade. The paints are vibrant and pigmented but they're pretty thick, dry really chalky and theyre not at all easy to layer. I'd say they're ok for the price of 10€ and but its definitely better to invest just a bit more into a smaller set of van gogh or sonnet paints
I agree, honestly. The Lukas paints, even the “professional” ones, really didn’t wow me. Have tried so many more brands since this video and it really shows just how middling they are in comparison!
Interesting how different things work for different people. I really like the Sonnet watercolors, too, but if I had to choose a set for a beginner, I would totally get them the Lukas studio watercolors instead, I find that they are so easy to work with.
Thank you for making this video! I've been debating over getting some Lukas 1862 because I've seen a couple of good reviews on them (and one by an italian artist I really like and that has always had very honest reviews) but my personal experience with them has been crappy. The art shop nearby was having a sale and I bought some of the Lukas Student pans, a couple of metallics, a red and a blue. The metallics were not opaque at all, so only good for the sheen in the correct light and the other two had very low pigmentation as well. I already had my set of 12 Cotman half pans and I had recently purchased the White Nights 36 Pans set plus a couple of pans from Old Holland and... There was no game. At all. So I thought that if that brand had that quality for their student paints, the one for the professional grade, though higher, would not be worth the purchase. So I'm probably still going to get them if they're on sale (a lot of sale), but I'm definitely not going to look for them. ^^;
Man! That sounds like quite a paint adventure! It’s funny.....you’re not the only one who’s said they’re relieved to hear I don’t really think these are the best paints. The professional ones are good, but not GREAT. I’m not sure what’s special about them, you know? I’ve seen a few people here on YT who love them, and actually, Mikki (the person who lent me her professional set) is a super big fan of them! For the price of the palette, I don’t think it’s worth it. But someone in the comments made a great point that the big tubes they sell are worth the price if you’re going to use a lot of a certain color, especially if you’re using that paint to teach other people. But I personally don’t see a need to use them outside of that. A couple of people have said the quality of the tubes is better than the quality of the pans, as well, so if you do end up getting some I think it might be better to get the tubes!
Some brands will have different mixes in the pans VS the tubes, while others will keep it consistent (like Schmincke), I personally prefer the second one even though I am a pan fan, because I'd like to have the option to be able to purchase the tube as well (maybe a sale, or a gift) and have the same quality/feel when painting with it. One of the more common comments about the professional ones is that they were very smooth, almost silky to paint with. I personally have never had this 'feel' about watercolors. My Prima Marketing set is definitely grainier, but that's just one set out of all the ones I have. Did you get the impression the 1865 were somehow smoother to apply then other paints?
Hm...I didn’t necessarily notice that the professional ones were “silky,” but I will say that the student grade paints were sort of......thick? So compared to the student grade ones, yes, that would mean that the professional were silkier than the student grade, but only because the student grade were definitely not silky. When I sprayed the student grade paints with a bit of water to reactivate them, the top layer was always kind of thick and chalky like really cheap children’s paint.
I’d say you should try them again, maybe even do a review so there are more examples here of them, and then give them away! Or take the paints out of the palette and put something new in there. It’s a sort of yellow box so all the mixes you make in it will look a little wrong, but it’s still a box!

I had the exact same feelings about Lukas, I put them away in a drawer for the last year and took out my Mission Gold instead! If I wanted pans and not tubes I would grab my White Nights/St.Petersburg.
This was a really nice comparison of the two. I find that the tube version of the student grade Lukas paint, is much better than the pan version, imo. However, I absolutely adore my Lukas 1862 paints, they're some of my favorites! :)

I totally believe the tube version of the student grade is better. Usually, tube paints for student grade seem to be slightly better than their panned equivalents. I wonder what they change about the formula between the two!
I swore I replied to this, but apparently that was only in my head LOL! Honestly, when I paint with them, I don't feel frustrated. In all my experiences, they've flowed beautifully across my paper, and stay vibrant, even when dried. I suppose the flow can depend on the paper, as well as the paint. Every time I mix them, they're always nice clean mixes, and I don't worry about mixing weird murky colors. As you said in the video, they layer well too! Apparently I'm singing a ballad of love to them hahahaha.
Maybe it's just because I haven't REALLY experienced high quality paints (Sennelier, Dan Smith, ect.), but this set makes me happy! Plus, I'm lazy, and the convenient color mixes are everything xD
Yo, convenient color mixes are life. Like, knowing how to mix colors is definitely an important skill (....I say as I edit a video that’s literally all about color mixing in gouache.....) but convenience colors? Well, they’re just gosh darn convenient. Saves you a lot of time and frustration!
Great video Kat! 😁 Its cool that you got to try them both out side by side. I have the same Lukas student set, but hubby uses those. I got them in a smart art box, but never tried them. The only question I have is, do the Lukas paint differently on 100% cotton paper? That's the only thing I can think of that might change a little bit on how they perform. Your ballerinas came out wonderfully. 😃
You know what actually, I have no idea. And I could test them on cotton paper if I really wanted to.....but I’d kind of rather not waste the paper. =>.

Hahah, I’m happy to help! Knowing that you’ve likely already got a nice collection of paints to pull from, I don’t really think they’d be worth spending the extra money on. Definitely good to try out, but I’m not sure they’ve even made it into my top 10 favorite paints, if I’m honest. But keep in mind, there ARE people who absolutely LOVE these paints, so they definitely have great reviews depending on whose opinions you usually share!

From my limited experience I agree. I haven't used the student but a viewer sent tubes of the 1862 and I wasn't very impressed :(
A couple of people have said that the tubes are better than the pans, though I find it both interesting and sort of reaffirming to know that you were meh on them at best. I wonder if that’s just because we have a ton of experience with different brands of paint? I’m not saying there’s anything bad about the 1862 paints-they’re perfectly serviceable.....I just......I don’t know. They didn’t thrill me.
Totally share the same sentiments. They were fine, but there are better options for the price as you mentioned.
A viewer in the comments brought up the point that, since they’re in Germany, Lukas are super affordable. So I guess specifically if anyone’s in Germany and these are way more affordable that here in the States, then these are worth it. Otherwise? Meh.

Oh, fabulous! It’s so exciting to be here while you’re starting your watercolor journey! I’m happy to recommend things and answer what questions I can. If you just want to test the waters and aren’t sure how much time and energy you want to invest in this adventure, my basic recommendations are to get the Prima Marketing Tropicals set, some simply Simmons or daler rowney brushes (or pentel aqua brushes!), and a bee paper watercolor journal (or their loose sheets of watercolor paper! Both are affordable enough but great quality. Though drastically different.) . If you want more profession paints but that are affordable, I FULLY back the Daniel Smith essentials set, which I honestly wish I’d jumped the gun and gotten before I ended up throwing away like $100 on tons of cheap stuff I didn’t like. Both paint sets are linked in the doobly doo of this video!
I don’t have full reviews of any of those things up on this channel, but they’ve all been heavily used and mentioned throughout-especially during my inktober videos.
I have the Lukas Studio too and my Paynes Gray is a Paynes Gray. My came in a metal tin. The Pigment Informations are on the paper the pans are packed in also the infomations about lightfastness and opacity. 😊

At first I liked White Nights but when I compared them to other paints, DA, MG, WN and noticed they looked more opaque. Over time I replaced mine with Davinci, DS, couple Sennelier and WN. Now I have what I enjoy and American Journey makes DaVinci btw but I just went a bit at a time a got a good set. Nothing freaky. I mix many and my favorite sap over all of them is from Winsor and Newton.
I figured out how to put the half pans in on my Schmincke set on my own after realizing they had to be at an angle, it was pretty cool realizing how those tabs worked!

You can see the fillers in the student grade as soon as you open it. If I had known when I started not to get student grade, I would have not wasted my money. I gave them all away to my friends' 6 year old. 😃

I've used their student quality paint before and their not bad for travel but if they ran out I'd just refill the pans with grumbacher academy or cotman paints since the paints aren't really impressive but on the rare occasion where I travel and paint I don't tend to layer very much (so the layering issue doesn't affect me) due to time restrictions, I'd only reuse the case because I've decorated it and I don't mind plastic palettes that much.
A note about the White Nights:
I have the 24 full pan set (although I've added Turquoise which is really nice btw and some purple pink I lost the label to from them) and their quite nice in my opinion but not an "oh my god you have to get this!!1!!!1!!" quality but still a great option, the best part to me is that they come in full pans for a great price to quality ratio (bang for your buck) since I hate working with small pans and big brushes.
Yeah, I agree with your assessment of both the Lukas studio paints (and just refilling them with something else when they run out. I don’t mind the plastic palette either, but I know they’re less preferred....and easier for me personally to break because I’m a disaster. =>.

I think the price value of Lukas paints really shines in their chubby 24mL tubes rather than pan sets. Their 24mL tubes are competitive with 15 mL tubes from other brands (and even 5 mL tubes from some more expensive brands) They're maybe not ideal price-wise if you're looking for a beginner "kit" but if you're an artist looking for big tubes of your favourite colours they're a great deal. I just bought a few tubes because I'm teaching workshops where I'm doling out sample palettes to attendees, and I'm thrilled with the value/money I'm getting with the Lukas paints.

Yes, exactly. Student grade paints just don't cut it for the layers and layers of glazing in my art. I want to give students good materials so they'll have a good chance of success but I'm not about to start doling out the most expensive paints in my palette. I just want a few bright, transparent colours with decent pigment load and glazing ability. I got some big tubes on sale from Lukas and Da Vinci and they're perfect. And actually I'm pretty blown away with some of them, including that magenta you like. Although I bought the Lukas Magenta for students, I think I might like it even better than my old standby Purple Magenta by Schmincke, made with the same pigment. And it's about half the price.
That magenta was definitely my favorite, and I could certainly see having a tube of it handy being useful! Especially because I’m betting the wet paint is even more transparent and pretty. I don’t have a lot of magenta in my collection!
In general PR122 is a great and underrated pigment, IM0. It's a wonderful vibrant and transparent primary magenta. The Lukas version is wonderful, completely transparent and high tinting out of the tube. I haven't had a chance to fully dry/cure it, but so far it seems to rewet quite readily as well.
Is pr122 one of the more fugitive pigments? That might explain why it’s less loved-since I know a lot of people are super worried about lightfastness.
I have never even heard of the Lucas paints but I’m surprised on the similarities between the professional and the student grade. Why you tease with the White Nights? I’d love to know ‘the big deal’ about them as they seem comparable to the Winsor and Newton professional line. I’ve only gotten one tube of Mission Gold to try out and it came out super soupy:( Almost as if the components are separated.

I mean, I tease with the white nights because they’re on my list of eventual things to review. :D I’ve literally had them in a basket on my wall for months but since I only do one video a week, it’s a bit hard to get to everything when they’re SO MUCH I want to do! If you want a short six word review on them though: “I’ve used them. I like them.”
And yeah, it’s kind of interesting and strange to see a lot of similarities between the professional and student Lukas paints. The pro ones are definitely more layerable and glaze much better, so that’s a good feature of them!
And I also like mission gold, but if it came out separated that’s not a fault of the paint entirely-it’s natural for them to get separated if the tube has been sitting for a long time. You can usually just mix it back up without too much trouble and it works just fine!

Fun fact! Mission Gold was the first set of professional paints I bought when I started this watercolor journey like a year and a half ago.....they made me understand much better what I had been missing. As such, there’s a special place in my heart for them, despite the fact that I don’t use them at all any more. ❤️
White nights is not even comparable to Windsor Newton unless maybe the Cotman which I haven’t used. Nothing wrong with them but the pigment is heavier and they don’t flow well for wet in wet. Some colors are off. Some are very good such as the cadmiums and Quins.
The Lukas student set you have was my first watercolor set (after a 4€ supermarket set..). My set came with a true paynes gray, which is my favorite color in the set. I got frustrated with them very soon, since it was impossible to layer the colors without them lifting and doing whatever they liked! They are also very opaque and chalky. The color selection is pretty cool though!
Yeah, the lifting on the student set was really noticeable! I think they went on really thick compared to the professional set, which was likely also part of the reason that they didn’t layer very well. I will concede that the color selection is a good one, but it’s also fairly standard for a 12 color set so while it’s a good set, it’s not really unique. Actually, the only palette I’ve seen in a long time that DOESNT stand by the formula of split primaries, a dark, and a couple of earth colors is the QOR palette that I think Marty Owings from Owings art recently reviewed.
Oh! And a bunch of other people have said that my palette must’ve come with the wrong color because theirs really had Payne’s grey in it. So weird! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these paints! =^.^=
I agree with you, I have the same tin of professional LUKAS paints and I’m disappointed in them as they do appear chalky when dry. My favorite is M Graham followed by by Daniel Smith, they have beautiful luminosity. I have not tried Senellier but they are on my wish list. 💞💫

Yeaaaah, these paints aren't super intriguing to me. Those magentas and violets you managed to get are super vivid, but there's way too many opaque colours for my tastes. Also, as a huge fan of Payne's Grey in that it is probably my #2 favourite paint -- what was that paint in that palette?! Holy crow. I am offended on behalf of fellow Paynesgreythusiasts everywhere!

I know right?! Such liiiiies! It looks like the "swatch" on the actual box is brown too! I know Payne's Grey is a mix so it can usually vary a lot, but that isn't a red grey or a brown grey or an orange grey -- it's straight up brown.

I have a question 👋, do the cheaper watercolors leave a porous texture when dry? I mean, does it feel like dusty? 😟 That's my only concern about watercolors, and I'd thank so much your answer! ❤️
No, I never had that happen with these paints. I use them on regular watercolor papers (cotton, cellulose and mixed) and after they have dried I can run my fingers over them and they feel perfectly smooth like just a piece of paper. As long as you use these watercolors like one normally does, and do not apply them ridiculously heavy, they do not produce any weird layers on your paper.

I think you‘re spot on in this review - I like Lukas, but not because they are exceptional in quality. It‘s probably because they‘re really affordable here in Germany. I have my student set from them, and while I don‘t mind using them, I much prefer my Van Gogh set that costs only a few euros more. And, I entirely agree with their magenta! The great thing about Lukas is that their tubes are huge(24ml!) and I absolutely adore the chunky appearance :D Cobalt Turquoise from them is also very nice, one of a few companies making it with PG50 (I think Qor and M Graham are other ones?). Thank you for the review video, it was really enjoyable - and your cat is lovely! :)

Someone else mentioned that the tube of cobalt turquoise is great, too! Interesting. I like that in these comments, I’m finding a lot of people have the same, specific opinions about which things about Lukas are good. Their chunky little (well, big actually) tubes are so cute!!! And a couple of people also have said that the tubes are better than the pans.

Qor uses PG50 but M. Graham is PB28. I definitely prefer the PG50 version, will be getting a Lukas tube for sure!

I have the same studio set as you and Im staring at my set... I definitely have a paynes grey and not that brown that is named paynes grey... but i do wish I had that brown since the english red and raw umber is a little too "unnatural"? for me since they are either too cool or too warm.
Innnnnnnnnnnnnteresting. I wonder, how long have you had your set? Mine is over a year old at this point, and I’m wondering if perhaps the Payne’s grey aged into a brown somehow?
I was able to mix a pretty decent Brown from the primary colors! That’s how I made her skin, but then I watered it down quite a bit and also added a bit more yellow to make it sort of ochre-y. Not sure what kind of browns you prefer, but I’m sure you can get some pretty decent ones out of this kit. Even without the help of my Payne’s Brown. =>.
I purchased mine a year ago from the German Amazon. The studio paynes grey was what made me fall in love with the colour and looks exactly like the professional set one. As for mixing browns, I dont have problems with it either using the set but I rather have that brown instead of the cooler one for convenience since it the one I use the most.... for almost everything :)
Ah, that totally makes sense! Convenience colors are called that for a reason-it’s great to not have to work hard for a color you’re going to use often!

Lukas Cian is really good with magenta and a yellow as a primary triad. As a brand lukas student grade went to a very young beginner student and the 1862's are barely on ( maybe not) my top 12 watercolors.
I can definitely see that triad working well! SOME of their colors were very bright and clear, like the magenta, and a lot of other people have said they’re great in the tube form for both performance and value. Especially if you’re using them to teach others, so that makes a bit of sense to me that their primaries would be excellent.
Thanks for the review! I've been looking for a cheap good quality set to carry around for plein air painting. At first, I just wanted to take a few pans of my studio palettes, but I'm such a clutz, I'm afraid of losing them. Now though, I think I'll just do it. My Schmincke Historical Set of 12 full pans cost me just 63$ CAD. So maybe buying another set isn't worth it XD. Though they just started carrying the Sennelier at my local art shop and that test pack is really tempting.
Oh man, if you want help with setting up a travel palette I’ve got like five or so Travel palette vids up so far-they’re my favorite thing to do, probably. And I specifically build my palettes so I can swap paints in and out as needed!
If you’re looking for a good set to plein air with, the Daniel smith essentials set I linked in the doobly doo is pretty much everything you’d need. It’s a split primaries set of 6 5ml tubes, and you could easily make a nice travel palette in an altoids tin or something like that if you wanted. I’d also recommend the sennelier aqua mini, which I didn’t link, and which lacks a cool red but actually has a super great range! I did a review and a mini palette build on the test kit if you want to check those out and see if it would suit you.
Those are only if you care about the lightfastness of your work. If you’re just going to use a sketchbook to mess around and have fun, I still highly recommend the prima marketing paints. They are NOT lightfast, and will fade for sure....but for fun and practice? Can’t be beat.

Hmmm. If your choice is coming down to the sennelier test pack of the holbein set, while Holbein isn’t my most preferred paint, it definitely gives you more color options than the sennelier test pack does. That means that if you had the holbein set, you could make multiple limited travel palettes and not feel like any one set was missing a color. And while I LOVE sennelier and think the test pack is an insane value, I did say multiple times that it really NEEDS a cool red. Like, basically screams for it.
Also, the texture of holbein and schmincke are both very smooth and consistent, so you’d probably really find using Holbein familiar and pleasurable if you already love your schmincke paints. =^.^= But thats my two cents!

Recently I got a set of student grade Lukas paints as a travel set, and also because the set was only about 10 euros. Normally I use Sonnet paints which is the students version of White Nights and it just felt like a pretty big downgrade. The paints are vibrant and pigmented but they're pretty thick, dry really chalky and theyre not at all easy to layer. I'd say they're ok for the price of 10€ and but its definitely better to invest just a bit more into a smaller set of van gogh or sonnet paints
I agree, honestly. The Lukas paints, even the “professional” ones, really didn’t wow me. Have tried so many more brands since this video and it really shows just how middling they are in comparison!
Interesting how different things work for different people. I really like the Sonnet watercolors, too, but if I had to choose a set for a beginner, I would totally get them the Lukas studio watercolors instead, I find that they are so easy to work with.

Thank you for making this video! I've been debating over getting some Lukas 1862 because I've seen a couple of good reviews on them (and one by an italian artist I really like and that has always had very honest reviews) but my personal experience with them has been crappy. The art shop nearby was having a sale and I bought some of the Lukas Student pans, a couple of metallics, a red and a blue.
The metallics were not opaque at all, so only good for the sheen in the correct light and the other two had very low pigmentation as well. I already had my set of 12 Cotman half pans and I had recently purchased the White Nights 36 Pans set plus a couple of pans from Old Holland and... There was no game. At all. So I thought that if that brand had that quality for their student paints, the one for the professional grade, though higher, would not be worth the purchase.
So I'm probably still going to get them if they're on sale (a lot of sale), but I'm definitely not going to look for them. ^^;
Man! That sounds like quite a paint adventure! It’s funny.....you’re not the only one who’s said they’re relieved to hear I don’t really think these are the best paints. The professional ones are good, but not GREAT. I’m not sure what’s special about them, you know? I’ve seen a few people here on YT who love them, and actually, Mikki (the person who lent me her professional set) is a super big fan of them! For the price of the palette, I don’t think it’s worth it. But someone in the comments made a great point that the big tubes they sell are worth the price if you’re going to use a lot of a certain color, especially if you’re using that paint to teach other people. But I personally don’t see a need to use them outside of that. A couple of people have said the quality of the tubes is better than the quality of the pans, as well, so if you do end up getting some I think it might be better to get the tubes!
Some brands will have different mixes in the pans VS the tubes, while others will keep it consistent (like Schmincke), I personally prefer the second one even though I am a pan fan, because I'd like to have the option to be able to purchase the tube as well (maybe a sale, or a gift) and have the same quality/feel when painting with it.
One of the more common comments about the professional ones is that they were very smooth, almost silky to paint with. I personally have never had this 'feel' about watercolors. My Prima Marketing set is definitely grainier, but that's just one set out of all the ones I have. Did you get the impression the 1865 were somehow smoother to apply then other paints?
Hm...I didn’t necessarily notice that the professional ones were “silky,” but I will say that the student grade paints were sort of......thick? So compared to the student grade ones, yes, that would mean that the professional were silkier than the student grade, but only because the student grade were definitely not silky. When I sprayed the student grade paints with a bit of water to reactivate them, the top layer was always kind of thick and chalky like really cheap children’s paint.
Ouch, yes, I can definitely remember the feeling. I might even exhume my Lukas to try and make something out of them... Or maybe give them away. ^^;
I’d say you should try them again, maybe even do a review so there are more examples here of them, and then give them away! Or take the paints out of the palette and put something new in there. It’s a sort of yellow box so all the mixes you make in it will look a little wrong, but it’s still a box!
