thanks for the review. we appreciate the lovely comments!
Sure Lukas. You make great paint and it's affordable. I endorse it. Thanks for stopping by. ~Marty
I'm having the urge of buying some Lukas
Thank you for a thorough review!! So happy to find your channel!!
The thumbnail caught my eye on the video because I just got the new Prima watercolors and I loved the tin and I noticed the tin was the same! I don't think the paints are artist quality but my kids are loving them and they are only $25 a set and for that price pretty nice.
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich I'll have to give em a try Lindsay! Thank you. - Marty
+Owings Art I just got the third tin of the Prima's and I absolutely LOVE them! I can't seem to paint with anything else lately. Love your channel by the way!
Gen Hi Gen - Thank you so much for the kindness. Yeah, when you add it all up, these are pretty awesome paints. :-) ~Marty
@A
The paints look awesome! I love how bright they look, and that the set doesn't have a black and a white (for once).
Yep and these are affordable wc's.
Hey Marty,
My husband bought me the LUKAS Aquarelle 1862 (72 count) Anniversary wooden box set for Christmas and I absolutely love them! they are the best I've tried so far, and I've tried quite a few! Thank you for yet again another wonderful review, and for bringing some light to these AWESOME Watercolors!
+Keri Riley Hi Keri - What a great Christmas gift. I agree these are pretty wonderful. - Marty
+Owings Art it was! it made my Christmas even more special! thanks for replying. it's really nice that you like to stay connected with your fans!
+Keri Riley HI Keri! can i please ask you what brands you've tried & why you prefer the LUKAS? I am currently debating on buying the Sennelier brand, the TURNER brand, the Holbein brand, or, if I use ALL my spending $$, i can just barely afford either the W and N 24 1/2 pan set, OR... if i use my tax return money, i can maybe get the Shmincke 200 dollar pan set. ugh! I just want nice VIBRANT/Semi-Opaque watercolor for my anime/illustration/cartooning/comic work. Have any ideas on what i should do? Thanks in advanced 4 any help!!
Hello, +DontLeaveMeLucile ! I love the LUKAS aquarelle 1862 watercolor for the simple fact that they are pretty much on the same quality as the Schmincke brand in my opinion, cause if you do a side by side compairison they both look identical! So from now on i will go with the LUKAS 1862's because they are a little cheaper than the Schmincke, and they look the same. Another bonus is that the LUKAS are much easier to get your hands on then the Schmincke, that way if you run out of a certain color it will be easy to replace. Senellier watercolor paints are beautiful as well, my favorite thing about them is that they have honey in them which does make a little bit of difference, but keep in mind that if you go with the Senneliers they even when dry in a pallet tend to stay 'tacky' cause of the honey property in them! Hope this Helps!
Keri Riley Thanks Keri.
These Lukas tubes are on sale at my favourite art store, they are 24ml tubes for the same price as a WN 5ml tube. So i really wanted to know if they are any good. Thank you for taking the time to review them.
Makes me much more at ease to give them a try!
Thank you for your thorough review, Gave me the confidence to buy the Lukas watercolors. I love your down to earth, straightforward style. Will continue to watch! Kate
Thank you so much Kate. Glad the review helped you. Hope you continue to watch. All the best! ~Marty
Your reviews are very informative. Especially the quantification at the end as it helps greatly when comparing to other products. Thank you.
nice, someone was just asking me about Lukas and I tried a kit once but I think they were student grade, they were very chalky and I did not care for them. This like (1862) looks great though. I think manufacturers need to be clear on student vs artist grade because my experience with the lukas paint I bought made me not want to try them again.
hey Lindsay, it was me that commented about the LUKAS Watercolors on one of your live shows lol :) I am pretty sure the set you tried was the "student grade" cause the 1862 artist grade set is far from chalky! I've been watching your videos for a long time now and I think you would adore the LUKAS 1862 aquarelle Watercolors!
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Thanks for this comment! I've been looking for reviews on the Lukas Studio line, which I could find at a very affordable price on ebay. For the price, it surely is the student line and most probably the one you've tried.
Sooooo green box or red is prof
I totally agree that it's up to each painter to determine the best brand. I really enjoy Lukas. I think they are underrated in terms of their value and quality. Really enjoyed your review. They are always so thorough and balanced.
+Laura R Thanks Laura. Hope you're having a great weekend. - Marty
Thank u soo much for this vid!!!! What a WONDERFUL & SUPER helpful share- some of us can't buy all of these to compare- I'm very impressed w-Lucas.
Hi Tina - Thanks for the note. I agree, the Lukas are pretty sweet. ~Marty
Thank you so much for getting to these! Now there's a reliable video for people to get more information about this brand, which is always good to have as a reference when selecting a brand rather than just written product reviews on a retail website. Plus the fact that they can see you working with them, I really this this review covered all the bases. And once again I cannot thank you enough.I enjoy their characteristics as well. I can't quite describe it..... The final texture to the paint is very smooth, like... like a soft pastel sort of quality, or perhaps a better description is a silky or velvet like quality. The one concern I have with any of the paint I've bought from them so far is the lemon yellow (PY3) After a good several months of being in a pan it started browning. Luckily, I've been browsing this site called handprint and learning more about pigments. PY3 apparently has this problem across several brands, it seems to be a lightfastness problem with the pigment itself, or the way most brands treat it. In any case, I'll probably replace it with another green yellow. I really try to avoid opacity if at all possible, I just prefer their glazing properties. Which is why I chose cinnabar PR255 (Pyrrol scarlet) over cad red as my warm red. If I've found anything so far, it's that Lukas seems to don a common name for a specific pigment for another. For example, their Alizarin Crimson (PR 176) is called carmine in Daniel smith. And what's referred to as alizarin crimson on the site is PR83, which seems to be a very fugitive pigment. Before I read up about any of this I just went by the name, which I suppose is quite unreliable across brands. When I was checking for an alternative for lemon yellow, and saw aureolin I thought it'd work. THen I looked up the name, and found it's even less lightfast than Lemon yellow. This however is not the case for the Aureolin from Lukas, py40 is what is usually referred to as aureolin, however, this aureolin is PY175, a lightfast semitransparent green yellow. If that doesn't work out either though, I suppose I'll have to move onto cadmium yellow lemon.Out of chance however, do you know of a single orange pigment that could match cadmium orange closely in hue (A more middle orange, not so close to red) and lightfastness, without the opacity? Lukas doesn't seem to have one, well, their color chart for permanent orange, PO71 Says transparent, but handprint marks the pigment itself as semiopaque just like cadmium. It'd be really helpful. Otherwise I'll just get cad orange. One of my favorite colors so far is opaque ironically, cobalt turquoise (PG50) Makes a beautiful gray with cinnabar. I'd like to think of myself as a landscaper, but my goal in this beautiful medium is to be able to make concept art, I'm an aspiring game developer, and if I want to make my own game, I'll need to make concept art. Video games often have unnaturally bright colors you don't often see in nature, so I base my palette around being able to get the most vibrant mixes possible, in case I ever need unnatural vibrance. Mixing cobalt turquoise with Cyan PG15:3, makes an intensely vibrant icy blue that could be used for many an polar region level in a game level haha. I believe the light versions of all those colors are variations of the same pigment. From what I've been reading ultramarine can have a slightly less red biased (Still a warmer blue than cobalt, but leaning closer to green than it's redder counterpart). I own both the light and deep ultramarine. I'll probably use the deep one more because its greater bias to red will make a more vibrant purple. Well I shot my mouth off again.... Excuse the text well ^-^' Thanks again for the review, I look forward to future content!
+AntiFormKeyblade Thanks for the detail in your comments. For the Orange you might want to look into Daniel Smith's oranges. Okay about how those illustrators get those colors do vibrant. They use software like Illustrator or they use something like Dr. Ph. Martin's Hydrus (Liquid Watercolors) or maybe inks and air brushing. Some use Copic markers. Hope that helps, but maybe you already knew all this and more. I'm an illustrator as well as painter so I have some limited familiarity with the paints and tools, but I don't do it full-time so I defer to the experts. - Thanks again! - Marty
+Owings Art I'll definitely take a look at Daniel smiths orange pigments then! Yes I suspected as much, much concept art is digitally made I believe, and because they use light from a screen to create their color they can literally pick pretty much anything from the spectrum. Still! I have tried a little digital, but it doesn't appeal to me quite as much. I prefer the feel of my tools in hand, and I believe firmly that watercolor is the perfect medium for me. Infact the things you can achieve in watercolor are rather interesting for game art, I never saw it as a hyper realistic medium, and I think that's something special about it. I'm certainly no more than an amateur, but channels like yours are helping me along the way. I'm very grateful for the wide array of content on youtube to help people like me learn.
AntiFormKeyblade Excellent. I'm in perfect agreement about the tools feeling better in your hands. I guess I'm old school, because I tend to avoid digital for most of my work. It's not that I don't like it, it's just that I prefer the tactile experience like you do.
Excellent review. I have been wanting to purchase another watercolor set that's portable with beautifully vibrant colors but doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I happened to stumble across your channel and I'm so glad I did. This review really helped me and was the deciding factor on which palette to buy, and I'm happy to say I just purchased this palette from Jerrys less then 10 minutes ago and I can't wait to play around with this set! The price is outstanding as just purchasing an empty tin palette is almost the same price as this palette with the colors included. Plus, it's almost less than half the cost of Rembrandt and a few dollars saved here and there always helps and is much appreciated. Thank you for this very informative, helpful review. now it's just a matter of waiting until my new goodies arrives :)
+MsNikkieMichelle Hi There and thanks for the comments. Glad you found it helpful and I think you're going to love these paints. I understand about the anticipation of waiting for something you really want to get right now, but they're worth the wait. Please check back in to let me know what you think after you get them. I always love to hear peoples thoughts on art gear. Thanks much and keep watching! - Marty
Thank you. I have no experience painting but am considering taking a watercolor class because I have been collecting brushes and watercolors and the paper and want to give it a try.
Hi Gail - No time like the present to give it a try. Be patient with yourself when you start out. It takes time to get better, but you'll notice an improvement right away if you stick with it. Good luck and Happy New Year!!! ~ Marty
Awesome video and comparison to other watercolors . I also enjoy more of an opaque watercolor and I was looking for reinsurance in purchasing the Lukas Aquarell 1862 and well you did just that. Thank you
🙏👍🏼😊
Thanks! The lukas 1862 are on sale right now at Jerry's (a quick 48 hour sale)..I was ordering a few sennelier paints but switched them all over to the lukas after seeing this! I was able to double my paints! Always a good thing when that happens. I so appreciate all that you do!
+Colleen M Great tip Colleen. Thank you very much. :-)
I use Daler Rowney artists watercolours. They are very good. I actually think most of the big brands are really good, just a matter of personal preference really. I like Lukas paints. I prefer them to Schminke and they are less expensive.
+Terence Molloy Thanks for the note Terence. All the products you mention are really good. :-) - Marty
I was sent here by The Mind of Watercolor after I asked if he would do a review on this set. I REALLY appreciate that you didn't just paint a few swatches but did a painting demonstration as well! Great review and I will def be checking out some more of your vids.
Thank you Brandon. I appreciate the support.
thank you for your time much appreciated
Thank you Sue.
Thanks so much, it's hard to find good reviews of these
Thanks for watching Anne. ~Marty
These look like really nice watercolors for the price, thanks for sharing Marty. Congrats on the 7,400 subs! Just imagine how big you'll be in a year with this quality content.
+SuperFlawless9 Thank you Patrick. You were an original supporter, so you've been there from the beginning and you know that means a lot to me. Yeah, these watercolors are the real deal. Considering the price, they're a top ten value. Tune in tomorrow night for some like Art Q&A. Have a great night! - Marty
Absolutely gorgeous looking paints, and that colour selection is perfect for me! I always wish more brands would include payne's grey and a nice pinkish red lol, so this is great. Also they have this nice clarity to them, really nice. Thanks for such a great review!!
And not very expensive if you compare them to other German watercolors. Probably cheaper to you if you're in the EU. ~marty
Very good point Marty, the price is very good. Yeah I can imagine for people in the EU it's so much cheaper.
Wow. Never heard of the Lukas 1862! I'm really impressed with the vibrancy and colors. Once again you've done a great review and given me food for thought as I was saving for a schminke set. Maybe these would be the ticket! Thanks Marty! Curious about the Rembrandt. Eagerly awaiting for that comparison!
+Denise Chapel Hi Denise - I still believe the Schmincke are superior, but they do cost quite a bit more than the Lukas. The Rembrandt's will come soon. - Marty
I would be interested to see an M.Graham watercolor review and comparison.
Very much looking forward to the Rembrant demo .
Wonderful; thanks for testing the lightfastness!
Thank you for watching! ~Marty
Thank you so much for your review...people are still watching them even now:) I wanted to let you know that you have helped me decide on which WC I will purchase...I was debating between the Sennelier aquarelle (artist grade) vs Lukas 1862 vs Rembrandt and I just couldn't decide on which one to pick...they all seemed SO nice and none of my favorite youtubers could help me as Irit Landgraf doesn't really use the ones I was debating between and my favorite, the Frugal Crafter, seemed to like them both so I was pretty stuck until I watched your review.
I have recently purchased the Sennelier student grade watercolors and while I loved the colors and the affordability, I have a lot of problems glazing with these as they lift too easily and just aren't as vivid as the artist grade WC I purchased (white nights)..on the other hand, the white nights were to die for. They were amazing, gorgeous, and absolutely wonderful so I am definitely satisfied there but I really wanted a bigger set so I could use them when I am too lazy to mix while having the option of mixing colors when I want to and not getting mud (i.e. Lindsay, the Frugal crafter, stated in her review that most of the colors are pure pigments, and that made me kind of set on the Lukas 1862 set). The reason I was STILL conflicted was because all the online swatches I had looked up seemed very dull and not really my cup of tea...when it comes to WC, I want a lot of vibrancy and granulation and some swatches didn't really reflect that UNTIL I SAW YOURS, so thank you for that.
Please let me know if the Lukas 1862 set of 48 pans is worth it so that I am completely confident in my decision (bc you know how expensive these WC palettes can get lol).
Hi Kamalita - Thank you for the notes. I think the quality of Lukas has declined just slightly in recent years so I don't want to steer you in the wrong direction. I would be tempted to buy either Sennelier or Schmincke. Not cheap options, but you said you like vibrancy.
Thanks for another great review....I love how you demonstrate so perfectly! TFS
+Anita Holmes Mighty nice of you to say Anita. Thank you very much. - Marty
Thank you for this review! I bought the Lukas watercolor set of 48 and am very happy with it! They were so much cheaper than other brands, it makes me feel like I got away with something lol.
+Haylee Long You got a good deal Haylee. They're very nice. - Marty
I have been wanting to buy this watercolor set for a long time. this video was extremely helpful as there were not many reviews on youtube for the Lukas brand. my issue is that the 12 half pan set that you purchased does not have the same colors as the set listed on Jerry'sartarama website. I'm concerned that if you purchase the same set that you have it might not come in the same colors. They list their 12 half pan colors as:
Opaque White
Yellow Ochre Light
Helio Genuine Yellow
Alizarin Madder Lake Deep
Vermilion Red
Burnt Siena
Van Dyke Brown
Ultramarine Finest
Paris Blue
Helio Genuine Green
Viridian
Ivory Black
+Tisha UnArmed Hi Tisha - Yep, those aren't the colors in this set at all. That's a bit strange since I got this set from Jerry's. You could try calling them and asking directly to see what they say. - Marty
The best way to review water colors, creating a female portrait.
Thanks Marty!
+Alexandros Makris Thank you Alexandros. Have a GREAT day! - Marty
I appreciate your thorough reviews... but white lettering on a white background? Please.
Love this review. I've wondered about these and why they are called "light". I'm going to research and see if I can find out. Thank you for doing another magnificent review. Oh....... one observation . .. you keep your mix trays tidy too! I get such razzing about it but my defense is always the same. I don't like muddy colors. ☺ Best regards from Michigan.
+Judy Brown Clean palette, clean paint. :-) - Marty
Hello Marty I know this review has been a while but I recently decided to experiment with watercolor and since I want them to be vegan because I do not want any animals having to suffer for my art supplies I noticed that Lukas is one of the vegan watercolor brands. Van Gogh is as well. I wanted to ask you which of the 2 are more opaque? Thank you very much for the lovely reviews!
Liking the new intro!
+Ian Chio Thank you Ian.
A well-done review. I have heard that the Lukas watercolors are some of the least expensive, especially at some of the UK art stores (many sell online and will ship overseas, and I've found that their shipping rates are often very reasonable and worth the wait to get the merchandise--AND no sales tax!). Personally I don't think I'd like the range of colors in this box, but I might try some others sometimes to see what they are like, and to supplement some of my other brands with colors that might be a little different in hue. One of the best takeaways from this video was your use of a waterbrush to make the color chart--a real time saver!
+Linda Navroth Thanks Linda. Have a great week. - Marty
Hey Marty! Really like your reviews! Hope you don't mind but I want to point out on the paints that I know of if they are vegan. I think it is very important nowadays to be aware of animal cruelty, not judging anybody at all many people are just not aware of animals being abused for art supplies, also for brushes unfortunately. The Lukas watercolor paints studio line and the 1862 are both completely vegan yeay! Love from Germany!
That's awesome. Danke.
I like to pair Lucas 1862 tubes with gouache :) they are a bit heavy and opaque but still great quality paints, well pigmented and cheap by comparison ;)
Great review. Never heard of this brand before. I'm curious about your review of the Rembrand watercolours, our national pride (I'm Dutch). I'm just starting with watercolours and I have the student grade Van Gogh travelkit. It's great fun to practice although it's a shame that good paper is so darn expensive. Far more expensive than my paints anyway. This brand is very afforable over here.
+roden70 Hi roden - Of course if it has the name Rembrandt, it better be great. I'm planning to post a review of those very soon. In the meantime, I think the Schmincke is probably one of the best, followed by Sennelier, Daniel Smith, M. Graham and these Lukas are pretty good as well. I also like the Japanese brand Holbein. For paper, I wonder if you can buy Canson or Arches for less money because it's in the EU. - Marty
I really like your videos. Very well-made and I like that you projected your voice so it's very easy to listen to. Fisheye lens on point!! I hope you'd do a review on St. Petersburg Whitenights watercolour set because they are soooooo good (especially their blue tones) and the price is AMAZING comparing to others.
Keep up the good work. 😆
+Chazzy Shinnizle Thanks for the note. I will look into the St. Petersburg paints for sure, been meaning to for some time. Thank you for watching! - Marty
12 pan is on sale at Jerry’s Artarama for $32! That’s the cost of the empty palette. I’m so confused though. I just tested my WHite Nights against the same colors of M Graham and there is a huge difference in chroma as well as dispersion. I’d guess that the pigment size is more irregular in White Nights as well as being of a lower chroma quality to begin with. Having any paint is better than having no paint but as I gain experience I am very slowly learning the subtleties of paint brands and what matters to me.
:-)
Hey Marty, I've been doing some research on these and decided to order some of the half pans, which are very affordable. I have a question and a suggestion. I'm having trouble getting a straight answer on the difference between semi transparent and semi opaque. Can you help me out with that? I would think semi transparent and semi opaque are the same thing but Lukas uses each term with distinction. Also, when you do your watercolor demos could you put a line under the watercolor before you lay down the swatches so we can see their covering power? Can you also slow down the part where you compare the color swatches so we can more easily see the name brands as you compare? Lastly, I am thoroughly enjoying your new format for videos and I think yours are among the best out there. Thanks for your efforts. -Pete
+IllustrationsByPete Hi Pete - I always love getting your feedback and questions because they are thoughtful, direct and helpful. Yes, the difference between semi-transparent and semi-opaque is an important one - First this can be confusing, but the main difference is the behavior over other colors or marks. The semi-opaque seem to cover more than the semi-transparent from my experiences. I'm not an expert in this area, but that's my experience. Pretty simple hey? Steve over at the MindofWatercolor may know more about this and would be a good one to ask. Also I've put a link below that I also think will help.
Thanks for the suggestions, they're good ones and I'll try to remember both, especially the slowing down during comparisons. Have a great day Pete and as always, thanks for the great comments and questions. - Marty

+Owings Art Thanks Marty! That's a great resource.
Having a hard time reading the white over the video. not sure how you could change that so it would be easier to read but i just wanted to let you know. Shannon
+Art Junkie Thank you Shannon. Yes, I see that and it's not easy over the whiter backgrounds. I'm going to be more mindful of this in the future. Thanks for the heads up my friend. - Marty
+Owings Art I have the same issue. Maybe use a light grey colour, so it works both with darker and lighter backgrounds..? Just a thought.
Anonymous For sure. I'll give that a try or attempt to avoid it altogether.
Hi Marty. It’s been 6 years since you posted this review. Have you used this set since your review and still give it the same ratings/recommendations? It’s on sale on Amazon and I’m considering buying but I certainly do not need more paints!!
Sorry I missed your comment originally. Yes I still have them and they work well. I don't use them a lot tbh, because I have Schmincke and/or Daniel Smith in my palette.
Hi Marty. What do you mostly use for your watercolour work; cold or hot pressed paper? A comparison video would be nice. I enjoy your videos. Morris
+Morris T. Hi Morris - I mostly use hot press because I enjoy the smoother finish. This is very unique to the user though. - Marty
Hi Marty! Greetings from Duesseldorf :-). Wow, i'm really surprised by the Lukas paints! I never used them and i would not have expected that bright colours. Really nice. Looking forward to your review of the Rembrandt paints, love the quote. I didn't know that Grumbacher is German. The name is very German of course, but i have never seen these paints here in a store. As always i enjoyed watching you painting. Do you have a favourite colour?
+Anja Meurer Hi Anja - I almost pronounced, "Duesseldorf" in my German accent. You are correct about Grumbacher, they are an American company, started by a German (Max Grumbacher), but many of their better materials are still produced in Germany: grumbacher.chartpak.com/about/
Also can you email me your address and I will send some to you to try out and keep. My favorite color from this Lukas set was between the red and the Payne's grey. - Marty
hi marty! did you notice the connection between grumbacher and schmincke on the chartpak site? it's under the schmincke brand page there. i thought that was real interesting, i used to love grumbacher when i painted in oils. now getting some schmincke wc are on my list as well as the lukas thanks to you. lol i am a sennelier fan but still wanting to try other brands. thanks for another great vid! :D
I have this set and love it. I also use D Smith. and just began using Golden's iine of QoR. Have you used the M Graham? They are made with honey too. Thinks another great video
+Diana Trout Hi Diana - Thanks for the note. Yes, and I love the M. Graham. Here's a review I did on them recently: ua-cam.com/video/YutYoOJS5NY/v-deo.html
Is Lukas Aquarell a Jerry's only item? I've never seen them anywhere else before. Anyways, I love that you compared them to so many different brands! Thank you for making this Marty! Very helpful!
+starshinesoldier Ah, yeah they are available elsewhere, but not easy to find. Jerry's sells them inexpensively. - Marty
hello Marty, please help me - Lukas 1862 or the talens van gogh, which would you recommend?
+Il Sinister I give a slight edge to the Lukas.
Owings Art
ok, then I will get me the lukas, they're on sale at the moment. Thank you very much for the quick answer! greetings!
I wish I had the cash for these. They're on super sale at Jerry's Artarama right now.
Great review Marty! I've been looking at these paints for months, but I really want to go with Daniel Smith, maybe I'll get these as a second pan set in the future. So far, I don't like my W & N Cotman set, but I think the reason is that I'm having a difficult time learning the mixing part, would you consider doing a how-to video to point beginners like me in a simple yet effective direction? I'm thinking of getting a watercolor color wheel, do you think those are useful? When I went to my local book store I found very little in the watercolor section, I was really disappointed in it, I'm looking for an easy to follow how to type of book to help me learn more about how to paint with watercolors, do you have any recommendations? Thanks, I really enjoyed this review, take care!
+Hermione Jarvis Hi Hermione - Great suggestion on the how-to video covering the paint mixing topic. I'm guessing that Steve from the Mind of Watercolor has already done that though. You should check him out if you haven't. For the color wheel, here is one of Steve's videos that I found very helpful where he covers complimentary colors and such: ua-cam.com/video/-keVFsQm6SE/v-deo.html
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the info, I'll definitely go check it out. I did see a couple of his videos of him making his own color chart, I still think I'll benefit from a good book though. Thanks again, good night.
Hermione Jarvis :-)
Thank you for another great video. Got any more watercolor brand / color comparison- related coming soon? I make that upgrade purchase in a month :D TY
+Sue Potter Hi Sue - A couple other watercolors I'll be reviewing are the Russian made White Knight wc's and Van Gogh wc's. Stay tuned. :-) Thanks for watching. - Marty
hi you must have brilliant amount of supplies with all the reviews what is your overall favourite medium you use
+Sylvia Costello Hi Sylvia - I enjoy it all really. It's like you're asking me which of my kids I love the most, they're all great. :-)
great answer
I just seen this video after have a quick look at Blick about Seneliner 12+4 set.Now a kind of confuse to choose invest between them : Why both of branch can have same price, same sale at same moment ?
What your ideal about both ?
+Hân Nguyễn If you can buy for the same price - pick Sennelier. - Marty
+Owings Art thank for you ideal. Have a good day !
+Owings Art Are the Sennelier brighter? Or are they same brightness/vibrancy but more opaque? I ask because I am looking for a WC set that is vibrant and semi-opaque (with many of the colors being semi-opaque, due to my main usage being illustrations, with gouache) thanks for this review! Now Im really stumped on what to get!!!!
You can looking a look at Seneliner clip review in th search tools of youtube. I see the 12+4 set plus some others open stock pans work bright and transperancy to translucent, great for glazing techniques.
DontLeaveMeLucile The Senn's are vibrant and have a unique luminosity to them. They are better paints than the Lukas in my opinion.
hi marty. love your channel. i cant find the lukas 1862 paints. no one is carrying them. do you know why? thanks
Hi Kammy - Have you tried Jerry's Artarama. ~Marty
Hi Marty, Have you done a review on Winsor and Newton Professional watercolours? (Not Cotman range)
+Kyomii Brown Yes! Here is a link to that review. They were also pretty great. ua-cam.com/video/Wb5gkJR3OVE/v-deo.html
Thank you! - Marty
I haven't heard of this brand. .. looks really nice, I absolutely loved the schmincke you had, is it horadam? I have the akademie one and i think that the colours are not as vibrant as yours... or maybe I'm not using them properly! Great review as usual 😊
+BIOnerd93 Yes, the Schmincke is Horadam and it is very, very excellent. The Akademie are student grade so they won't be as vibrant. I appreciate you checking out the video as always. Thank you! - Marty
+Owings Art aha... that explains the difference. .. thanks for your reply.
BIOnerd93 :-)
please review the mission mijello they are amazing😍😍
+Maxine Ando It's on my list. Thanks! - Marty
I really enjoyed this. I always stare longingly at the Lukas and Schmincke watercolour sets when I'm in an art store! Maybe I shouldtake the jump and just grow my skills to match the quality of the materials.
I have to ask though, what was the music near the end of your painting? It reminds me of a film score and I can't pin it down :(.
+sovotchka art Thanks for the comments and question. The name of the song is, "New Land" by ALBIS. Cheers! - Marty
Are they expensive? What's the cheapest good watercolor set you can think of? Thanks Owingsart. By the way, I've been trying the grid method! :)
+Emily Says Meow Hi Emily - These are very inexpensive, about half the price of Schmincke or W&N Artist wc's. Ahhh, the grid method, it can turn average drawings and paintings into good drawings and paintings. :-) - Marty
Hi Marty, 1st let me just say I love all your videos. I have watched every one I can find. I've always had an interest in watercolor. I am newly retired and was wondering if there is a watercolor out there that is good for a reasonable price. I've watched all your different reviews but some of the paints are fairly pricey so I just wondered if there's a good inexpensive one out there. Thanks Marty.. Please keep the videos coming. Kathy
+Kathleen Clement Hi Kathleen - Thank you very much for the note and the great question. The good news is, yes there are many great options for affordable, good solid watercolors. Here are a few that fall into that category. Mission Watercolors, Sakura Koi's, Lukas Aquarelle 1862 and Daler & Rowney Aquafine wc's. All are pretty good choices and very affordable. - Thank you! - Marty
Have you done the Rembrandt review yet? Like others I am looking forward to it. Thanks for the reviews Marty!
Found the review now.
+Big C :-) Yep, you found it.
I can't see anything "lite" in these colors either and I really like the travel tin pallet .
+Tracy Lustick Pretty cool hey! - Marty
Could you do a comparison review between Lukas, schmincke & Sennellier? There is a significant cost difference between Lukas and the others. I'm curious if the Schmincke really worth the cost difference.
+Gina Phelps Thanks Gina. I have a comparison video on my list. - Marty
Hello Owings, thank you so much for recommended me the Caran D'ache Luminance, these colors are the best, but I have an another question. In watercolor tubes set , What you recommended in terms of lightfast, pigment, more vibrant, and transparency? Thank You!
Greetings Omar - The very best watercolors you can buy for all of those things is Schmincke in my opinion. It is what I use and it is superb. You may also like Daniel Smith which is outstanding as well and not quite so costly. Best of luck. ~Marty
Owings Art Owings Art Thank you so much! In my neighborhood some art stores sell it, but I don't have an idea if those were good and yes, they are expensive but I think you paid for a high quality product. I want to thank you again for always answering my questions!!!! I like your channel by far
Omar Morales Any time Omar. Thank you for your kind comments.
Hello Sir! I tried the link you had for that set, but it doesn't work. I tried to search it, but the 12 half pan set had different colours from that one.
+Colour Crazy I will fix that. Thank you for the heads up. - Marty
+Owings Art Hello Sir! How many pans of this would you recommend for a beginner?
Colour Crazy 12 or so should do to start with.
+Owings Art Thank you Sir!
Colour Crazy :-)
Do the rings on the bottom of the tins work for both right and left handed painters?
thank you
Sure thing.
could u do a video about this opaque watercolor u showed on the video?
thank u
Hi Gilberto - Which one?
Owings Art o was thinking it was an opaqur watercolor.
But i suggest you to do with casein.
I just saw some videos.
As in Brazil i can bet i will not find these ones.
thank you so much
Eba BR aqui :)
Jaqueline de Souza apois diga aí, Jaque.
Esse cara tem muitos produtos artisticos hein, dá até gosto... A aquarela Lukas tá 140 cada tubinho... Mt caro :/
Light means leaning towards blue, if i remember it right.
+Yolanda Cui Thank you Yolanda. - Marty
+Owings Art Sorry for the wrong information. I just studied the pigment color wheel on handprint, it seems like there's light vs deep and pale vs dark. Light means leaning towards yellow on the color wheel and dark leans towards violet. In yellow, light leans towards green. pale means vibrant and dark means neutral.
+Owings Art Sorry I said it wrong again. The pairs are light vs deep and pale vs dark. Hope I didn't make it too confusing.
Yolanda Cui thanks for clearing it up Yolanda. - Marty
Hey Marty, great review as always. I did see an article over at handprint.com and wanted to bring it to your attention. In this link it says that the vibrancy was due to artificial brighteners and not from pigment. Although later in the review it says that the statement was about their paints prior to 2005, when they supposedly re-worked their formulas. So i'm not sure if those brighteners are still the reason for their vibrancy or not or even what that means as far as the permanence of the colors. Just an FYI. Here is the link www.handprint.com/HP/WCL/pigmt2.html#lukas
+IllustrationsByPete Thank you for sharing this Pete. I've reached out to Lukas to verify the vibrancy is pigment related and not from brighteners. I'm almost certain though that the brighteners are gone because I get none of the telltale, "white" opacity. Additionally, there are paints made today with excellent lightfastness that have chemical binders, one example would be the Qor paints, used in conservation. Not trying to defend Lukas, because even if all that pans out, it's still a mystery how they can make this paint and sell it for half the price of their competitors watercolors. It's an ongoing investigation now, but in the meantime, these paints are pretty damn awesome from initial use. :-) Thanks for the tips on these and the excellent information. Appreciate it Pete. - Marty
+Owings Art Thanks for the reply Marty. I'd like to see what they respond with but I will definitely keep these on my short list to try out. That list was a little rough on some other brands that I know others swear by so they could be overly critical. Good luck with the pod cast. - Pete
huh. ive only heard poorly of the brand, but your video proves otherwise
+Rebecca Nelson Hi Rebecca - Don't know much about their other stuff, but these paints proved to be pretty darn good. - Marty
All your reviews seem the same to me. 😐
If by that you mean really awesome, thank you. If by that you mean sort of boring, well then I better get to work. ~Marty
Owings Art oh no, I don't think they are boring or I wouldn't have watched them. I mean besides Shminke being your favorite I can't really gather much info to differentiate which may suit my needs best. I get the impression that most are the same and any one will do and maybe that's the truth.
elsa Grace Hi Elsa - That's good, thank you. No, all watercolors are not created the same. The best way to decide which is right for you is to give some of them a try. You may find you really like one brand over the other. Lots of time you find your sweet spot with a paint by just sketching. If you watch my videos, it may help you narrow to a few. My favorites are Schmincke, Daniel Smith, Sennelier and M. Graham. None of them are cheap, but they work very great. ~Marty
Duuuseldorf xDDD
Doooooooo-sell-dorf. :-)
