  • LUKAS 1862 vs LUKAS Studio Watercolor Review & Comparison
    In this video I will compare the LUKAS 1862 Artist quality watercolor paints with the LUKAS Studio student grade line of paints. I am using the 12 half pan travel sets which happen to contain the same colors.
    Please note: I was not asked or compensated by Lukas or Jerry's Artarama to post this review. These findings and opinions are my own.
    I am comparing the Lukas Aquarelle Studio set of 12: www.jerrysartar...
    With the LUKAS 1862 artist grade set of 12 half pans: www.jerrysartar...
    Price: (12 half pan travel sets)
    LUKAS Studio retail: $23.05 (Sale $11.99)
    Lukas 1862 retail: $87.50 (sale: $42.29)
    I found both sets of paint comparable. I decided to investigate their lightfastness and both lines of paint had excellent or very good lightfast ratings on their paints. I will post links to the LUKAS info with light-fast/transparency/pigment compisition info below. Please note they use a sale of ***=excellent and **=very lightfast
    The major difference between the lines is the 1862 has more colors. Also I reckon that the studio like must have more fillers to justify the price difference and I did see a bit more chalkiness on the black on some of the studio colors (magenta, viridian, cad yellow, cad red) but honestly not a lot. Also some of the colors between the sets were a bit different so maybe lesser expensive pigments were used on the studio version, for instance the 1862 lines uses real cadmium pigments in CAd. red and cad. yellow but those colors in the studio line are hues (synthetic replications of the pigments.) It does not worry me though with the high lightfast ratings. Upon further investigating I found that both the studio ad the 1862 lines use the same pigments except for the cadmium colors but the pigments used in the hues are the same as the pigments in permanent red and permanent yellow light in the 1862 line respectively.
    Both of the LUKAS sets were more opaque than I prefer in a watercolor paint. If you look at the color charts I linked below you will see that few of the colors claim to be a truly transparent color, come are semi transparent, semi-opaque and opaque. You might prefer this, it is personal preference but I generally like a very transparent watercolor. Still, these are a great buy and the next time I need to order watercolors for a class I will buy the studios without hesitation.

    I would more than likely opt for the Studio set and then replenish as time goes by with the 1862 colors. Thanks for an in-depth review.

    I bought the Lukas Studio set for a travel palette, and it is my favorite student grade palette! The colors are creamy and very pigmented. I just bought some of the 1862 tubes....maybe I shouldn't have!

    I don´t know how lightfast all these colors are - but I´m thinking the study grade is realy not bad for beginners ...
    you can have a lot fun with both lines because both palettes contains all what you need to create pretty artworks.

    For student colors I put Cotman below Lukas or Van Gogh. And I also despise Chromium Green. I would have preferred another blue or yellow (cerulean or a warm transparent yellow like Indian yellow)

    Phthalo Green and Viridian are totally separate colours. The former is an organic dye and comes in BS and YS flavours. The latter is a chromium hydroxide mineral pigment and is much more of a blue undertone. Oxide of Chromium Green is chromium oxide so very similar to Viridian but more green and less blue. It is very opaque as you say - but if one uses a lot of water it's fine - a drop of granulating medium and one can end up with a very similar effect to a good Ultramarine, just green.

      I have never had much luck with oxide of green chromium. It is a very dense color. I have never tried any medium with it though. I may try your suggestion.

    • @RichBoden
      @RichBoden 8 років тому +1

      +Adam Wallen Really dilute it down and put some flow enhancer into your water (dish soap...) or try gum Arabic with it - you can get some pretty effects painting en verdaille with it mixed with water to give tones. In acrylic it can be useful for opacifying green mixes - I made a lovely sage green out of Naples yellow and sap green to paint a the edge of a mixed media piece with but it just wouldn't cover it - a bit of OoC Green and it worked wonders and didn't change the shade too much.

      +Joe Maysky I'm not sure if the two brain halves theory still holds up tbh but I feel totally unfulfilled if I cannot be creative - which is why a research career works well for me - but I have to be able to make things too.

    I checked the lukas 1862 color chart for info on the artist ultramarine. Apparently they sell it in 2 versions, a light and a deep. Maybe the 1862 set has the light version, which looks a little cool biased.

    • @elsagrace3893

      Yes, the 1862 set uses Ultramarine light. I replaced it with the dark hoping to get darker darks but the difference isn’t that great. Well, I haven’t actuall’y painted a picture with it mixed in. I’ve just done swatches.

    I am a beginning watercolor hobbyist(?) and I didn't really know which paint to buy, especially with a limited fun budget. I bought a LUKAS Studio watercolor set based on this review. I absolutely love them! They are perfect. Now my paints are better than my skill level and I didn't spend a ton. I can have a lot of fun trying to raise my skill level without feeling that my paint is holding me back. I certainly feel that this is a great beginner set. Thank you so much.
    The travel set is less than 12 dollars at Jerry's currently. Awesome deal! I bought the more expensive metal box set and love the metal box too. Love it!

    Hi Lyndsey
    Found your review to be very informative. So much so that I went to the links to further investigate. The only 1862 set I could find contains the dreaded white and black pans. Ugh! Can you provide the item numbers that you reviewed because like you, a big no thanks to those two pans. And I'm curious as to what color pans you would pick instead of any of the standards that are included in this set (besides the ever-popular sap green.) Thanks to you and love ALL of your videos. Can't get enough of your watercolors especially your live shows.

    Lindsay, I love your comparison reviews...you've saved me lots of time and money! I'm not an artist by any means, but for what I do and the price differential I'd go with the student grade...I (at least on the computer screen) don't see enough difference to justify the price jump.

    I'm happy that the student grade watercolors stand up to the professional grade because I recently bought those when they went on sale at Jerry's and I'm using them right now as I was watching your video. I don't know much about watercolors, but thank you for making this video. You made me feel even better about my impulse buy (I have a terrible addiction to buying art supplies without consulting my budget), and I intend to make the most out of them and actually attempt to learn how to use watercolors.

  • @carried9130
    @carried9130 5 років тому +1

    Wow some great colors here.that cyan is my favorite out of these collections. The Viridian looks like a forest green to me, but that may be because it's onscreen? I love swatch videos, I actually learn quite a bit about colors and application that way. It's interesting too how different manufacturers produce different hues of the same colors. I agree so much with not appreciating when manufacturers using cutesy names for paint colors. Because if you run out and need to get more, you end up wasting so much money trying to find a replacement.
    I ended up inheriting a set of Cotman tubes, so I got a nice metal palette and some full pans, but after a while I decided to redo the palette with half pans and bought some additional colors to have a bigger color selection. I do need to learn color mixing but I also wanted a bigger selection to run with. In my area at the time, that was the cheapest option for me to give watercolors a go. I like a lot of the sets you have reviewed but I don't want to invest a lot of money until I know I'm going to enjoy the medium and use it often enough to warrant the expense. I do have some notes though for half pans done by other manufacturers, like this cyan and magenta if I can find them separately. I sometimes forget that I don't have to strictly use the same manufacturers as long the makeup of a different brand allows a good working relationship. Lol sounds goofy but can't think of a better way to say it. For instance I have the Bob Ross oils (first experience with oils) and some of Gary Jenkins own brand, and they both work well together. I ran out of white so bought a WN tube I found on sale, and that worked ok. So it is less expensive brands of paint, but as I'm a total beginner, I don't want to spend hundreds on paint if it's gonna sit there unused. If I really get into it, then I can look at pricier brands.
    I also like the way you did your swatch with strips, it saves so much paper and cardstock. Thank you!

  • @Gabi_Marie
    @Gabi_Marie 5 років тому +1

    The studio set looks lovely! I have been looking for a cyan and magenta to add into my collection, and I may pick that set up since it has a few other colors my Cotman set does not have. And they did replace the chromium green with an olive green in the set I found, which maybe is a good thing? I am with you on not liking the more opaque colors, if that's what I was after I'd just use my gouache.

If you looking for nice artist grade acrylics, which are still not too expensive, try the talens "amsterdam expert" , not the "amsterdam" without the expert ;) these are really nice.

      +Rich Boden no burnt sienna is tough too, though I suppose a mix of red iron oxide and raw umber could match it closely

    • @RichBoden
      @RichBoden 8 років тому +1

      +Joe Maysky Yes - I like Raw Umber for muting down tints too and find it impossible to cope without a decent vivid purple (Cobalt Violet and Ultramarine Purple) or a true clean Cadmium Orange if I am doing botanicals. For seascapes en plein air I need Indanthrene Blue and Perylene Green, really.

      ***** I love W&N for quality and - down here - availability (we only have a tiny art shop in the city and then Hobbycraft of course - both stock it). I have got 55 of the 97 regular colours and I want to get the 12 limited editions (Twilight and Desert sets - you can still get both on Amazon). I use 24 colours for en plein air (I'd like to add some more greens, pinks etc to make mixing in the field much faster), which I really want to try more of this summer. The 24 I use the most are pictured here: www.the-spin-doctor.co.uk/2016/05/going-pro-moving-from-student-grade-to.html and a few palette set-up recommendations. I have a few really unusual colours I don't use a lot of - do you have Caput Mortuum or Potters' Pink btw? Do you find much to use them for? They don't mix into anything other than mud really.

    • @RichBoden
      @RichBoden 8 років тому

      ***** PS: the columns on that image on that page should read Neutral, Yellow, Red, Blue, Green, Extra - I've now split "Extra" into a second set of greens and a set of purples and a set of oranges which makes 32 and that's the en plein air set I intend to use this year. The rows are (from top) Cool, Warm, Earth, Dark, as I see there to be 4 split primaries (etc), not 2.

      +Suzala Suzala yes, i linked the info PDFs on these paints below, the student grad lukas paints ARE as lightfast as the artists ones, the cadmiums are hues (the actually are the same pigments as permanent read and permanent yellow in the 1862 line and phthalo is used instead of a true viridian) but all are excellent or very good in lightfastness.

      There's really no problem with using black, but a lot of people, myself included, prefer using different colors like purple or sometimes even brown to shade white because it looks less flat and makes a more consistent color palette, that is to say the shading and lighting is done with the same colors to make objects of different colors look like they're in the same environment.

    Of all the artist grade watercolors, the 1862 are about the cheapest. The Soho watercolors that Jerry's sells are terrible. They make terribly muddy mixes, they dry out and crack in the palette, and they harden in the tube. The Lukas 1862 are very nice paints. I did find they were a little more opaque than some of the other artist grade paints. Nice review as always!

      We don't get Lukas widely available in the UK but I want to try them now. For watercolour I only use W&N artist grade as I know what I'm getting and I trust them (even if I hate their almost brown gamboge...). I use student paints to practice techniques with and do studies - Cotman were my favourite but these look great. Royal & Langnickel Essentials are scarily good for £3.99 for a set of 12 with 2 decent brushes.

      yeah, I debated on ordering these when I had to outfit my local libraries watercolor class but I did not dare try them if they were bad and waste my libraries money. That siad I have use the pro paint a bit more and I honestly would recommend the student line still, they are very comparable, the only difference being the more expensive cadmium colors in the artist grade. Lightfastness if great on both.

    Great video Lindsay, thanks!!! I have just gotten the studio set from the same place as you. 😉 I was wondering if there was any difference in sets. Jerry's does sell the half pans for the studio version, they are $2.99 a pan. I definitely really like these comparative reviews. 😆

      +Valarie Connell I think the half pan artist (1862) start at $3.49 at jerrys too! I just filmed my tutorial for the new box, fun stuff!

      +thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich I look forward to the next video 😃 I could of sworn all of the 1862 pans were $3.49...I am going to have to check again. 😉 I have to say I was a little disappointed in what you are doing the video on. It seemed less then the value. Did you feel that way?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  8 років тому

      +Valarie Connell it depends, if you add the retail value of the box it would be about $40 then shipping (which is free in the US and priority mail) would be $50 so in that case yes but not if you bought the items on sale and knew what you wanted. I usually find that the contents of the box equal $40-$50 retail, of course they have to absorb shipping costs too so I think as far as art subscription boxes go this one is pretty fair. I would have rather a better/larger round brush and skip the flower palette personally tho:) I hope the Yupo isn't too challenging for beginners because it might turn someone off to watercolor as it is a really unusual paper.

    • @DrawingWithFire
      @DrawingWithFire 8 років тому +1

      +thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich I was wrong! The $2.99 is for 10ml tubes no pans. Also, all (except for 7) of the 1862 half pans are $3.49, whole pans $4.69, and the 24ml tubes are $8.39...except for 7 of the expensive colors which are $10.99 (tubes). I will say that Lukas does have great prices and the quality seems great. Oh and the magenta that you love at least for the studio set is a 6-7 on the B.S. scale. None of their colors appear to be below this...so all are lightfast! 😃
      Here is what Jerry's says the difference is between 1862 & studio: "The only difference between LUKAS Aquarell Studio watercolors and artists' grade paint is the use of high quality substitutes in place of some traditional (and often toxic) pigments". This was from their studio paints page

I want you to know that their website is just great, and so are their prices. I got free shipping bc I spent a certain amount. AND, they included some freebies that I had looked at but didn't purchase. The Lukas set has just the right colors for travel. I do hope they're lightfast but, if not, well, I had fun!! Thx!! Totally off-topic, I'm playing with some colours I don't use often enough. Love Potters' Pink but I wasn't sure how well it mixes - ditto Caput Mortuum. The best use I found for the latter was muting down other colours in the same way adding Raw Umber works, giving an almost chalky tint. Potters' Pink I'm more stuck with (normally I don't even mix it) - wondered if you'd ever found a use for either of them other than "as is"?

    • @thefrugalcrafter

      +Rich Boden I don't have that color. Sounds like it might be a nice flesh tone.

    • @RichBoden
      @RichBoden 8 років тому

      +thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich It's much more like a cement-y pink and very, very granulating. If you mix it with Naples Yellow for example you can end up with pink granules on a yellow ground as it separates out when it granulates. If you mix well it looks great though and makes warm, creamy oranges/beiges but too granular to be of much use. Caput Mortuum is beautifully dark - it is just iron oxide but big grains so it is almost burgundy and very dense and granular.

      well, they are going to have more extenders to keep the price down, currently the student set is on sale for $10 and the artists for $25 a 12 halfpan set, not a bad buy either way. Buy you will get more of that gel feeling on a student grade, an upside is that the student grade paints will lift better if you make a mistake when painting.

Everyone is making money off UA-cam. They get paid thousands to paint it. Then get paid again to sell little prints of it. The original peice never sees sunlight. Artists whom are selling their originals aren't on social media because they are way too busy and profitable to be selling stickers to children. That isn't a knock on youtubers. It's just the truth.

    what does fugitive colours mean? and also if something is a hue is that a bad thing. I'm not understanding the lingo. thanks Lindsay!

    • @opal77
      @opal77 8 років тому +1

      +kim ryan A fugitive color is one of very low lightfastness, which technically just means, the pigment in the paint will fade or discolor very fast. For example, Alizarin Crimson PR83 (Pigment red 83) is a fugitive pigment. It will fade terribly within 300 hours of sunlight. most lightfast paints can withstand 800+ hours of sunlight with relatively small change, or even none at all. A hue is typically a paint made with several pigments to make a near match of a single pigment paint. For example, Winsor and newton cotman Cobalt blue hue is a mix of 2 pigments PB29 (Ultramarine blue, likely a green shade) and PW5 (Chinese white)It's not nessecarily bad, but single pigment paints are preferred by many artists. Generally as well, the more pigments in a mixture, the less lightfast, even if it is marginal change. Some pigment mixtures degrade themselves more than others. I cannot profess to know which combinations do this.. However there are two which are known to me. PV19 (Quinacridone rose) And Ultramarine Blue (PB29) Are two lightfast pigments, but when mixed they lose a lot of their integrity as a lightfast mixture. Also, do not mix any cadmiums (PR108 Cadmium red, PO20 Cadmium Orange & PY35 Cadmium Yellow) with Iron oxides ( PBr7 Raw & Burnt sienna, as well as raw and burnt umber & PR101 venetian red, indian red, transparent red, transparent brown,) This is because cadmium darkens in the presence of iron based paints. For that matter, do not mix cadmiums with Prussian blue ( PB27) It is also an iron based pigment. handprint.com/HP/WCL/waterfs.html This site is a wonderful resource for watercolor topics in general, but this section will show you all about pigments, listed by Pigment Color Index names, marketing names, and chemical names. The most reliable way to find a paint is the Color Index Name. Marketing names can often be nonsense made up of marketing romance, and will not tell you what is in your paint.

      Be a little careful - something not being "lightfast" and having a low rating for it doesn't make it fugitive - fugitive comes from "that which disappears" in Latin (just like the other meaning of the word!) but some non-lightfast colours don't fade: they change colour. Some (true Prussian Blue is one) change colour in sunlight but revert back when in dim light, so whilst they would not call that lightfast, it isn't truly fugitive in the stricter sense - so always find out what light does to a paint if it isn't lightfast - you may be able to live with it. Opera Rose has a pigment in it as well as a fluorescent dye (Rhodamine B) which they don't always list as a pigment on the tube. The Rhodamine is fugitive but the main pigment isn't - so it does lose the vivid brightness but the general pink stays behind - that's one example of where you might want to still use it.

    • @opal77
      @opal77 8 років тому

      Rich Boden
      You are correct, not being considered to be permanent or "Very good-Excellent" in lightfastness does not make it fugitive. But I did not say all impermanent paints were fugitive, I said a highly impermanent paint "Like alizarin crimson" are considered fugitive. A rating of 8 and 7 are Category (I) Excellent, 6 is Category (II) Very good, 4 & 5 are impermanent at category (III) or "Fair" Poor is categorie (IV) Where we reach fugitive with 3 & 2 ratings. Finally with A 1 in ratings, we are still at fugitive, Category (V) Very poor. Under this section you will find the blue wool scale and categories www.handprint.com/HP/WCL/pigmt6.html#lightfast
      While the roots of the word may be fading, please take note in art supplies this definition is extended to "Change" in general, whether it be fading, discoloration or other. Lightfast pigments will "Remain unchanged" For example PR106 does not technically fade, instead it begins to take on a blackened appearance (Losing Chroma) within two weeks. It does not lighten in value and fade, but it does change, and it is still considered fugitive. handprint.com/HP/WCL/waterr.html#PR106
      As far as is known, the change of PB27 in strong sunlight, and reverting in dim conditions is myth passed down and made reputable. www.handprint.com/HP/WCL/pigmt1b.html#iron (See iron blue) handprint.com/HP/WCL/waterb.html#PB27 It is shown in some samples there is clear fading, and I don't think they changed back as they were taken back indoors (To dim light) for the scans to be taken. I myself have taken out a swatch of PB27 on a strongly lit day (Easy because the state I live in is practically a desert) and it did not have this immediate change, or change back exposed to light, and then dull conditions. If you try it yourself I'm sure you'll see it as well.
      Finally while you are correct, the artist can assess what is acceptable "Change" in their paint or not, it is important for them to know about it in the first place,
      As shown in the sample of "Opera" handprint.com/HP/WCL/waterc.html#PR122 PR122 + BV10, it did not just lose chroma showing the original pigment as the dye faded, it lightened and faded while losing the chroma boost from the dye, especially in tints. Generally, a mixture is only as permanent as the least lightfast addition to it, sometimes even less, as I mentioned earlier in the case of mixtures of PB29 + PV19 handprint.com/HP/WCL/waterv.html#PV49 Scroll down a little bit to reach the convenience mixtures of PB29 & PV19. It's not just the blue or the red that fades in this mixture, theres not a noticeable hue shift as it changes, it simply fades together.

      Nope. The student grade is around that price yes, but the 1862 is more expensive here in Germany, too. One of the cheapest places for getting supplies in Germany is Gerstaecker or kreativ.de (which belongs to Gerstaecker as well) , and they don´t currently have the 1862 in 12 half pans, only in 16, but the 16 half pan set in the metal box costs 57,98Euro. Interestingly, you will save big if you buy the 24 set because you can have that for 68,53Euro, which is a wicked deal when compared to the 16 set. If you buy single half pans, the 1862 will vary between 3,31 and 4,89 per color, most of them being on the lower side of that. Just thought I´d mention it because we ARE lucky here when it comes to the pricing of many art supplies, as many of them are made here or in our neighbouring countries, but we are not THAT lucky. Artist grade watercolors for 15Euro? Who would be buying the student grade then? 😉

    Sorry, too much talk, actually very hyper and fast, can make one anxious especially in these times, we need more calming not super hyper. This is not calming at all, even if the reviews are great, but a little more toned down would be a lot more pleasant.sorry
