Wow, thank you. For around 3 years I've been wondering why artboards exist and why I would want to use them. This is clear and concise with excellent examples.
At some point over the past week or two, I watched your video; my entire workflow has now completely and forever changed, and very much for the better. In terms of efficiency, it has literally opened up a whole new word for me; thanks so much for taking the time to create and post this!!!
This is by far the best video ever on how to use art boards in Affinity Designer! I was so happy this popped up in my UA-cam feed that I immediately subscribed to your channel because you showed how to use this tool so effectively, nicely done! Your teaching style is on point and very easy to understand thank you so much!
I remember old times when I used Illustrator, and back then being able to rotate an artboard was a long awaited feature, so much needed when you design some folded material like packaging. I'm glad we have it in Designer.
thank you thank you thank you! I wasn't using Artboards at all until now. Now I use them all the time! So glad I've found your channel! Excellent videos!
That makes a lot of sense. I’ve been doing it the hard way designing individual elements and saving them, from now on I will put everything in the set in the same file. Thanks!
A total amateur, I have not appreciated until now how i could save myself a lot of trouble if only I had learned to use artboards. Thank you for a most illuminating tutorial.
Thanks for this I'm one of those who've never explored artboards so never knew about their versatility, it will make a big difference to how I work in future. And also thanks for the other videos I've watched this past week-especially the '5 mistakes' one showing how to get the best out of customising your Affinity workplace. Separating the two text tools and using the wee line to create different tool groups makes my toolbar much easier to use. Keep up the good work, and thanks again-subscribed.
Very helpful, thank you, we did this for doing company business cards in illustrator years ago, good to see it now on Affinity. Set one persons card, copy art board, set new names and details, onto next card… easy and quick. Great to be able to export as separate files.
Thanks for this great info. You have a wonderful teaching style. In "View Mode" you can toggle "Clip to Canvas" when it's unclipped you can move things outside the canvas and still see them.
Fascinating, I have been ignoring art boards, but now I understand how they work, I will definitely be using them. 🙏👍⭐⭐⭐⭐🐻. Thanks for sharing another brilliant video. You show and explain things in a really clear way.
Subscribed. This makes huge difference in how I'll use this software, a super practical tip. I'm a non designer. I noticed you also touch on brushes in another vid, I'll check that out
Thanks for the summary about artboards. No I haven't been using them. (I'm a casual user of Affinity stuff at this point.) I did just discover that you can select an artboard and turn it (and it's contents) into an asset. That might be of use to some.
Just a few weeks ago I was using Indesign. Affinity (Thank you chatGPT for mentioning it as an alternative) proved way more affordable. I was using Publisher (like I used to in Indesign) to alter designs on diffrent pages. But now you explained artboards the coin has droped and I know I will use it like crazy.
If you are not using the artboard you can view an object off the canvas by using the back-slash \ you can toggle the view on & off with it. I quite often use this view to move objects off canvas to get them out of the way then move them back later.
You can manually move them around but also if you select them all you can space them out evenly using the align tool thing (I forget what it's actually called but if the thing you use to centre objects vertically and horizontally etc)
Great video. I had no idea what they did, now Im excited to try them out. Thank you BTW Can you snap an artboard to a selected object, so that it auto sizes?
Yes, under-used. I like Artboards and plan to use them regularly. Export Personna probably under-used by most too. I've had 3 Artboards before and exported them the usual way, one by one. Going to remember EP now. As others said, excellent explanation. Thanks!
Yes, very cool, I am throughly convined. After years of doing my work the wrong way, I now, know better. Btw, please do an update of Artboards for Version 2 of Designer. I've noticed its not behaving quite like Version 1 is in your video. Thx!!
If you have multiple documents open then above your document where it says the name and size of the document you can drag that down to make the window smaller. You want then position your documents how you would position other windows such as multiple browser windows. Hope that make sense
The best way I can think of, if it works, is create on large artboard. Add the guides to that artboard then create artboards within the artboard (make sure they are inside the large one in the layer panel) and the guides should be viewable across them I believe
@@BrownBearProductions Thx a lot! It's a bit awkward this way, but it's the best solution at this moment I think. Adobe Illustrator doesn't need an artboard behind the artboards - although I like to work with Affinity.
Hi, thanks for video, when i create a postcard and a flyer on 2 art boards, should the artboards have the original sizes of each item or how do you work with item sizes and artboard sizes ? is item size = artboard size ?
You can do two things. You can either create the artboard the same size as the item itself to get a full view of how things would look. (I usually do this but it can be harder on the device) Or you could make the artboard smaller but the same ratio and then when you export you can export as the size you’d want the final product to be
this tutorial gives good overview of what i searching for...i was using inkscape for all my verctor gfx because i am experienced in. I dont know if i should try designer again... one benefit...its more stable than inkscape ^^, - cheers*
Are you wanting to export each layer of each artboard separately and then bring them together in another app? Or are you wanting to exports each artboard separately?
@@BrownBearProductions I would like to export each artboard separately. I can export the artboards as PSD files and that keeps the layers active. Then all I need to do is delete anything I don't want in the file. Is there a better way?
Click the name of the artboard (either in the layer panel or in the design window) and literally hit delete on the keyboard. It'll ask if you want to keep the objects that are on the artboard or delete them as well. Choose whichever option you prefer 👍🏽
Ah really helpful because you connect the tool to graphic intent so I have a clear subbedunderstanding of why I would use artboards. The suggestion that they can be used to keep the development of an entire project together is brilliant. I think of any project that way but end up trying to organise them by giving them a similar name. Say JonesLogo1 to JonesLogoFinal. What a mess! Subscribed. Thanks.
Great tutorial. I’m planning to use Designer for website layouts. Planning any tutorials on this or is that not your thing? I’d love to see your process if you fancy tackling it. Subscribed..👍
Not something I do with AD usually but definitely something I can look into and give some info on for sure 👍🏽 there are some cool things in AD that make website mockups really easy
@@BrownBearProductions Sounds good. I look forward to some of your great tips. I don’t expect a complete mock up if that’s not your thing but maybe how some of the tools can be used to achieve a mock up. Great channel. I’m glad I found it.
Here's a tip for everyone that just came to mind. When designing a UI and you want to have a different column for different elements embedded in a screen or artboard, you can actually create a new artboard as a container, inside the main artboard and add the column to that child artboard. Now you can snap things accordingly to that child artboard with a different column, even add specific constraints to it if you will be duplicating and changing contents.
All of that can be done with normal objects and does not need artboards. The clone and change, the multiple export. The only thing it gives you is a line of text above.
@@BrownBearProductions you can make it dark mode. Like how yours is. But when I use artboards it immediately comes out of dark mode. I was wondering how you get yours to STAY in dark mode/black background
Ah I get what you mean. If you go to preferences under (I think) user interface there's some sliders that you can change the grey value of the background 👍🏽
I used them before but did not know their function, i really enjoyed the informative tutorial and especially the demonstration on how you developed your logo and the benifits of using artboards. Great tutorial, thank you
Yes, I used Adobe Illustrator artboards for many years but was never very excited about them. Your video gives me a much better idea of what can be done in Affinity Designer. I switched to AD about 4 years ago and haven’t used Illustrator for at least 3 years! I’ve converted all my file to AD! Thanks again for the Vdeo!
To be honest this Clip Canvas thing is the most annoying in Affinity. What is it for at all? It doesn`t work for me and many people complains about it :) It is just a preview setup why can it not be simpler??
@@BrownBearProductionsi think the last two minutes answered part of my question. i didnt have the patience to learn how to create an artboard when i didnt know what the purpose of it is.
