I love this video! However, it makes me fearful for the younger generation, especially with the rate of them adultifying themselves on social media. I wish there were more spaces in which a kid can be a kid.
That is a great point! I think it's important for us as a society to not see childhood or child-like qualities as "cringe" or a negative thing. Those subconscious messages definitely get passed down to the next generation. Every stage of life is crucial in its own way and deserves to be embraced fully.
Excellent video! We all need to embrace a bit of play even in adulthood. And I agree that people are 3 dimensional beings. Just because something is stereotypically girly or boyish doesn’t mean you can’t have other interests outside of those things. That also means having those stereotypical interests isn’t wrong either. We often treat people like they should either be one thing or the other when in reality more often than not most of what we are interested in have more similarities than we’d like to admit. As a guy my favorite color is pink and I like watching television shows or playing video games that many would consider feminine. But I also like to shows and play games that are targeted more towards men as well. To me they are all fun and I don’t have to try to make excuses as to why I like what I like. The toxic ideas of what we consider masculine and feminine often do more harm than good and I also think that plays a role in what we consider playful as well.
Agreed with *all* of this! I grew up on a lot of very varied things. I love the Resident Evil franchise, RPGs, GTA, among others like those, but also grew up on a lot of girl power shows (like Winx Club, Barbie, Bratz, etc), and I'm happier to just like what I like without making excuses for it as well. I'm me, and that's that!
Thank you for your comment! You made a lot of great points! Dismantling misogyny or gendered interests is beneficial for everyone. Everyone deserves to like what they like without judgement, understanding that we are all-- like you said-- three dimensional beings, who don't belong in strict boxes of what's deemed socially acceptable. I also like what you said about certain activities being considered masculine or feminine impacting what we consider as acceptable forms of play for ourselves. I find this to be so true, and I wish more people would think critically about all of the factors that hinder genuine expressions of play.
