Hi friends! I am experimenting with creating the occasional long short-form video (if that makes any sense lmao) in hopes to increase my upload frequency.
This video was inspired by some new ideas I've been thinking about since posting my previous video and corresponding livestream. Find those links below!
▶OG Video on Hair Representation in The Sims 4: ua-cam.com/video/X1Hg9-5pHEM/v-deo.html
▶ Follow-up livestream on Black hair history, respectability politics, & more: ua-cam.com/users/livebsPxQ7324-A
And since you read this far 😜, the following videos inspired me to explore these topics further. Definitely add to "Watch Later" if these topics resonate with you:
▶ Licensed Therapist, Steph Anya's Book Club on KC Davis' "How to Keep House While Drowning": ua-cam.com/video/9gqp6hMBTjA/v-deo.html
▶ Interlexual Media's video on "Black Women & The Hygiene Olympics": ua-cam.com/video/oDDwjhxASqA/v-deo.html

Thoroughly engaging, thank you for sharing. I follow K.C. Davis and never once thought about how her take on “morally neutral” tasks would resonate in different ways for others. I have always found certain things expected of women to be mysterious because there was no discourse about this in my home with my older sisters or my mum. (Last of a large family with big age gaps) I never knew how people learned to be a woman. Of course by “learned to be a woman” I mean “learned to change what naturally occurs to what society expects” - thanks again, will follow your viewing recommendations, and continue to expand my frame of reference 👏

Societal expectations of hygiene for women is definitely at a different level. And then when you add the layer of social media, the internet will have you thinking 20-step self-care routines are necessary to be clean and hygenic. 😅 There definitely needs to be more open conversations about this stigma! Thank you for your comment, Daisy!

I wished you would have included how menstruation adds onto the stigma as well. I know it's a female thing across the board to be concerned with leaks, scents and other effects from menses and menstrual products, but I feel like that worry is especially apparent in Black women. I feel like this aspect is one of the sources of the douche propaganda that's pushed so much. Post 13th amendment, I know our ancestors struggled (along with anyone else coming from extreme poverty, societal abuse and disenfranchisement) to afford basic necessities and it wasn't until the last 100-150 years or so that Black Americans have had "the come up", but we don't have to carry the burdens and traumas of our grandparents and by extension, our parents when it comes to public perception, cleanliness, and personal hygiene. We can allow those spiritual wounds to heal! Though I do love my tongue scraper, that's the only way to cut through the biofilm lol.

I definitely agree with the importance of freeing ourselves from the burden of public perception! Taking time for personal hygiene is a positive thing (obviously lol). And some people see experimenting with different personal care products as a form of self-care, so I get that. I made this video because I think being aware of this history puts into perspective why many people in the Black community *may* feel strongly about being perceived as presentable and clean.
The video from Interlexual Media, which I linked in the pinned comment, goes more in depth about douches and the stigma around menstruation and vaginal smells, especially for Black women. I cannot include all of the relevant information in a video under 10 minutes, which is why I link sources. That's a great video to watch for more discourse on the topic! :)
