Kudos Luke, for talking about such an important and such personal topic! It is incredible how many professionals have their monitors on stage and in the studio so so so loud, and endanger their most important organ every day like that!
I wear 15dB plugs every time I go out to a club and every time I play. In my opinion it’s good practice to put the earplugs in before going to the club, maybe already in your drive to the venue, so ears will be nicely adjusted before you go in, so you hear the music and people talking nicely. Also you only take the plugs out in a quiet place during the night or preferably only once outside of the venue to avoid your ears being exposed to really loud levels suddenly unprotected.
One upside to DJing with earplugs in and then headphones on top of them is that your signal to noise ratio inside the headphones is better, so you hear your own mixing in the headphones a lot better than you would without earplugs, because you can turn the headphone output a little louder.

Having tinnitus for most of my life now.
I can say you, don't underestimate how fucked up it is to never in your life hear silent again. Even worse, you need something that gives sound near you at night to focus on.
If you are starting to focus on your ringing it gets so loud that it literally starts to hurt your ear.
There is a reason why a lot of tinnitus patients consider suicide.
Don't joke around with loud sound.
I have to keep up to a really tight sleeping schedule and diet to keep it to a minimum.
Everything I do it feels like it makes it worse. Such as working out, not working out. Having people in the room etc.
My doctor told me that most people that have it loud enough to get it checked out will eventually go through the legal assisted suicide just in case it gets bad enough (or already is.)
Seriously, don't fuck around no matter how uncool people think you are.

@@annekedebruyn7797 this is a horrible comment that will scare people. I have very loud tinnitus that I have habituated to. I can hear it over everything. What you said about assisted suicide is total nonsense.
Habituation is a real process that you can go through to adjust and filter out your tinnitus sounds for much of the day. Studies have shown over and over that the loudness of your tinnitus has no relation to habituation. Studies have also shown that there is no definitive correlation between tinnitus and suicide.
In fact the overwhelming majority of people habituate and it’s folks with previous mental health issues that become bothered by their T. Like myself. I did a CBT program for tinnitus to help me begin to habituate.
For anyone reading please do not listen to the comment above and do not ever go on tinnitus talks. You CAN habitUate to any tinnitus loudness and sound. Please do not listen to disinformation.

      @@cityraintunes Disinformation?
If anything, you are representing my comment in a very dishonest manor.
I have not stating that many people suicide for it.
I said many people with 'severe' tinnitus may consider it.
Somehow I doubt that your studies include people whom are talking about it with their respected doctor?
Not everyone has the same 'form' of tinnitus.
It's a very real thing and yes, some countries allow assisted suicide for it.
The reason my doctor told me is because I have it severe enough and no, I didn't get used to the sound.
Even with a new tryout a university in The Netherlands is doing where they tune to your frequencies (which was nearly impossible for me because I lost so many, I mainly hear loud white noise with a few high frequencies peak) and play that for a few months nonstop over headphones.
And people should rightfully get scared for it if they can avoid it.
This video isn't about a bit of tinnitus due to old age or tumors.
      This is about SELF-induced tinnitus.
Sure my and other cases might be the worst of the worst and sure, the majority of people won't get it as far. But that doesn't revoke my right to tell my story and that you are calling it miss information is kind of dreadful to do.
If you read studies deep enough, you'd realize (and many specialized doctors will tell you) that still not much is known about all sorts of phantom pains.
Like I said, the treatment I had might have worked for others. But certainly not anyone.
I am not earning anything with my tinnitus so I am not sure why you would act so hostile.

Much like how our eyes adjust to low light and we can see in the dark after a period of time I find my ears do the same thing to audio. If the monitors/headphones are kept low my ears compensate very quickly. Its good for those long sessions so you dont get "ear fatigue"

Yes indeed, but you need to be aware that when wearing good earplugs to protect your ears and your ears get used to that protective level, it’s very dangerous take those plugs out of your ears, say, in the middle of the dance floor when the sound is on full blast, because your ears cannot adjust the other way back quickly either, the ears’ natural protection mechanism is not working at all, and you can really badly damage your ears like that.

Ok look my hearing was damaged from a Traumatic Brain Injury and lost a major proportion of my hearing in my left ear I know how bad it is to deal with sudden hearing loss. I’m in desperate need of good hearing protection. I just picked up my first set of djing gear the Pioneer Xdj rx2 today!!!! I’m so excited as I love how you touched upon this subject.
Actually the Traumatic brain injury is from a car accident that changed my life I no longer want a 9 to 5 job I want to DJ! Life is too short to not do what you want and I’m taking that leap.
Tinnitus really is a problem and I was wondering how you work around your hearing loss while producing in ranges you can’t necessarily “hear” as well as you can elsewhere.
Anyways I’m entering this contest lol

Best tip I learned from music school to manage hearing fatigue while producing is setting an EQ on your master and cut out the low end at 200hz.
When you need to hear your low end you just disable the EQ. Bass frequencies fatigue your ears the fastest since they're longer in length than higher frequencies.

I need hearing protection because from a young baby I had hearing problems, and I sense a difference between the "volumes" of each ear. When I was an 18-year-old raver (i'm 41) I used to love dancing directly in front of the speaker stacks and sometimes even putting my head inside the speaker cone!!! I had many headaches and ringing ears after the raves. If you damage or destroy the micro-hairs inside the ear canal there is no recovery or repair from it. I am currently in Portugal. Love your vlogs Luke, watch the every Friday :)

Luke! I've thrown all my life savings (ouch) into heading out to Ibiza for the summer on May 8th, with the plan to rediscover my passion for dance music production after some heavy knockbacks, get back to firing out new songs on a regular basis, and to chase the dream of writing music full time. I'm even getting the kit to do a weekly vlog myself, hopefully to inspire others to do the same.
I need a set of custom hearing aids myself to keep myself safe in the clubs, I can only imagine it would be hard to write music and edit vlogs with tinnitus?
I'm residing in the UK right now, and Ibiza from May - hope to see you out there this summer!

Thanks for the insight on hearing protection. Love all your vlogs and appreciate the time you're taking to answer peoples questions.
I never really thought about protecting my ears until playing in China a few years ago. The monitors had a ridiculous amount of high end I couldn't hear anything so I stupidly just increased the volume on my in ears without realising the affect it have on me.
The reason why I need in ear protection is because ever since I had that painful mishap happen to me, I have always been scared and VERY conscious of the volume range ensuring it never hits the red especially with the monitors provided by the club...... BUT there's always that club engineer who thinks it's a great idea to peak everything making it hard for me to even hear what is going on in my headphones forcing me to raise the volume.
    I'm based in the UK

Yo from England! Don't think I truly understood the idea of how loud volumes of music seriously affects your hearing till I first went to a club in London and came out being practically unable to hear for days! I learnt that for mixing keeping the volume relatively low helped make my ears for sensitive and susceptible to hearing more finer parts of the track I wanted to mix in, thus helping me to have much smoother mixes (plus considering a lot of places you play at can deal with high volumes from speakers it helps rest my ears as well haha). Keep up the good work Luke!

Very well said. I see Luke always having fun while he's touring but it doesn't always seem to be that way with other DJs. You often hear of the 'burnouts' and sometimes I just think why? it's not necessarily a profession which demands such intense dedication so sometimes I think 'Just take the week off with the family'. I'm guessing Luke is just so used to touring around the world that even if he did take a week off he wouldn't know what to do with himself!

Today I just realised I lost my earplug, I bought it 2016 then I pregnant immediately and couldn't go to club or work so it's not used looong time. and then last year my another daughter who is 3 years old, I thought she was chewing some HARIBO ,but it was my EARPLUG!! by then I lost one of filter. ordered again the filter, then two filters had different db. I ordered one more filter again. I thought it's done the nightmare of earplug. but now my earplug bag is empty. and I am pretty happy to see this now! what an coincident. whether I get the ear plug or not I have to say this. Thanks for the wonderful advice. Really appreciate that. The reason to why do i need the plugs is that i m inside a club like almost everyday and at times the djs don't monitor the ref monitor sounds and by the end of the night your start feeling the pain. Post that i m a rider and we do breakfast rides or general rides and must say some exhaust on the bikes really makes u want some and to top it all u can't miss the traffic sound. So just trying to save some for the years to come. Thanks once again from India

Hey Luke! This is Raphael from Hong Kong! I believe hearing protection is a must for any musicians. No matter we make music or go to festival, we want to hear great music with the best quality. So that our ears must be protected always! This is an absolute safe and secure practice. As a DJ and metal guitarist, i used to listen high volume and powerful music. Sometimes i just felt headache and earache, this is the response from our brain warning us to pay attention to our ears. I've noticed that many older musicians have problems with hearing loss, that remind to protect my ears early as i can. I hope i can still listening to great music with healthy ears when i get older. Thanks for the video to remind us how important it is! Cheers~

For quite some years I never used proper hearing protection while going to parties. When I had the feeling it was too loud, I simply ripped of some paper from a handkerchief and put that in my ear (which - as you can imagine - resulted in dull noise and totally ruined the music experience). When I started using party plugs with filters it suddenly became clear what I had done to my ears the years before. At many night events, the sound system gets turned up increasingly louder because people's ears adapt to the volume pretty quickly. Once you use plugs and put them out just for a moment towards the end of the party, your ears will instantly start to hurt. That's when you realize how loud the sound actually is and that's exactly why I need hearing protection to enjoy the music while making sure that I will be able to enjoy it for many years to go ;).
    Greetings from Germany!

Hi Luke! Great info. I am entering this contest in Hope's of not being too late. I just found your channel. I need to protect my hearing for several reasons. One reason is because I am new to DJ'ing, (just started in Jan with the purchase of the DDJ-SX2). I am still searching for great headphones and protection and this opportunity is perfect! Secondly, I am the first and only African American female Hurricane Hunter in the US Air Force. I fly on WC-130J airplanes for upwards of 10 hours on missions. It is extremely loud and protecting my hearing is paramount. I am conscious of my hearing at all times. I recently had an incident due to a pressurization issue on the plane and I have eustachian tube dysfunction. I really need to be awarded this hearing protection so that I can continue to serve my country and play great music for the crowd without worrying. Go USA!

I've been DJ'n for over 30 years here in Australia. The last 10 years I've tried all sorts of ways to protect my ears. I am my own worst enemy, always wanting to hear the music loud. I've now bought some In-Ear Headphones, and slowly getting used to them. But its so hard with people coming to talk to you, having to pull them out all the time. Its seems about my best option is to use Cotton Wool. But thank you for the advise, I will keep trying the In-Ears, and print a sign to put in the DJ Booth. "LIVING ROOM VOLUME"

As a beginning DJ, I definitely feel like I’m surrounded by loud noises often. These days, I find myself going to clubs or shows more to listen to song choice, vibe, and DJ techniques. Having the earplugs would allow me to continue doing this without worry. Cheers from LA, California

there should be more Dj's like you . There are some good Dj-UA-camrs out there, but a Dj who gives advice about hearing safety, how to mix properly and Doesn't have pre-recorded sets is just great. Keep making those great vlogs Luke!!

Perfect video choice, Luke! Hearing damage is an issue not enough people are concerned with.
I've been working in loud environments (saws, drills, etc.) ever since I was 13 so since then my ears have been super sensitive to loud volumes. Some earplugs could really help in preventing damaging them even further in the clubs.

Thank you for this topic. When I watch new dj's jump on at small venues I always see them turn the volume up a bit to try to sound harder and better then the previous DJ. I found if I slowly turn down the volume it draws more people in and onto the dance floor.

I need hearing protection for a list of reasons - I am married, i have 3 kids, i listen to music way to loud, life is loud. After 18 years of DJing its beginning to impact my hearing daily and i could do with some Alpine protection. Living in Northern Ireland and as i type this i can hear the St Patricks day marching bands passing by.

The tip at the end was really helpful! Going to be practicing this one in the studio and am really curious if it will help prevent those longer mixing sessions from hitting a wall where you don't want to hear anything for awhile. Perhaps this doubles up as a reason for why I would love to win a set of customs and keep my ears fresh! Either way - thank you for all the tips!

Hey Laidback Luke. I asked about hearing protection two months ago on your 7 ways to really make it vlog! Thank you so much for doing this. I need hearing protection because I have hearing issues such as tinnitus and I'm less than 30 years old! I had to go to an Ear Nose Throat specialist multiple times and even had to get an MRI to make sure I didn't have a brain tumor. I especially need hearing protection because I still love to go out and listen to music, but unfortunately I can't turn the music down when I'm at a concert, club, or festival! My country of origin is the United States and while I hope you pick me, I again really appreciate you getting the awareness out there for others!

My headphones don't have a nice noise isolation... I have a friend who has tinnitus and he tells me it drives him crazy !! Sometimes he can't even sleep properly. I need hearing protection to avoid tinnitus and to be able to enjoy my passion for DJing for a few more years !!

    Hi Luke,
i really appreciate this vlog since hearing protection does play a huge role to me. No matter if I am dj:ing at home or if am at a club, the bleeping in my ears after a loud session at some point told me that i had to change something.
Unfortunatley, even those 30€ hearing protection distort the sound that much that i catch my self over and over again taking them out to enjoy the full, clear sound.
So big thumbs up that you encourage people to protect their hearing!
I would love to try those custom Alpine earplugs as i expect them to deliver a lowerd but still much more clear sound.
    Greetings from Germany :Y

I need hearing protection cus I honestly have this constant ringing in my ear from not using anything for the past year. It's incredible how little we learn about protecting from going to shows, whether it be every other week or a 3 day festival of loud music. It'd be great to have some quality protection when I go to anything :) even to just a regular concert.

I have loved audio for a long time. Installing it, creating it, listening to it. But from time to time, I have to remind myself that being in the club and pushing my ears to those limits would put me in a bad spot. Sometimes I hear ringing all day and get headaches and make the foolish mistake of pushing through it and jamming to music. I could use a pair of custom earplugs badly to let me continue to love dance music for my whole life. :) USA 🇺🇲 Keep on posting Luke. Each day I learn a bit more from you or fellow djs.

Hey Luke, first time writing on your videos. I think you need to protect your ears mostly because of people around you. As you cant hear the sound well in a normal volume, each time you would take it higher and higher, causing other people to be annoyed with the sounds at your house, work, school, etc. Support from Mexico!!!

Hi! I am Arman from Indonesia.I watched your show at Djakarta Warehouse Project 2014 at Jakarta, Indonesia, what an intimate show! So i am a producer and a dj as well who frequently come to the big festival to see and hear tune from other DJ or DJ/Producer. And I think the important thing when you come to the big festival is to protect your hearing by using an earplug. My friend had a tinnitus once, and he said that is no good for his career as a dj and producer. Ya, I think thats a wrap! Cheers!

Great advice. I try to protect my ears always that is possible and set the volume as minimal it is possible to hear. To do my mix I close my eyes and get concentrate more than usual. Today, some visual aids help to not depending all the time of loud volumes, but just get loud enough to get a good mix.

I need Alpine's hearing protection because every party I play, people always want the volume up more & more throughout the night! The current plugs I have have, have worn out a lot, and the filter sticks out too far making it very uncomfortable for my headphones. I also am always looking for a more comfortable/ ergonomic ear protection solution, as I am also frequently helping out the elderly around my neighbourhood and mowing their lawns for them (obviously not as loud as a club scenario), which can still damage hearing with prolonged exposure. The gift of hearing is not one to take for granted. Country of residence: Australia
