You can feed all the extra wood to the new colonies instead of selling it for 100 in Europe, which will result in a much higher score (just 1 or two more wagon trains would be enough for resource distribution). Also, it's not a bad idea to dedicate a couple of new colonies to food production only, with the goal of generating more free colonists (the island up north with the lost city rumor is a great spot for food city).

Are you saying stockpiled goods generate score, or are you saying I should not bother with lumberjacks in the new colonies?
My main argument with that food spot is the very fact that it's an island. It'll be very vulnerable during the war of independence. That's also why I've stayed clear of many sugar spots in the Caribbean.
I freely admit I don't know the game enough to min-max properly. I'm just thrilled at how well this playthrough has gone, all things considered. :-)

No, stockpiled goods are no good, but you can spend the lumber for colonization of those "no forest" regions, and their colonists will count BIG time towards the final score (they would need, say 1500 lumber each, which is barely a point or two if sold for 1500 gold). Such colonies can generate new free colonists once every 3-4 turns, and that's what will pump the score up.
Also, you can easily populate the whole island with 5-6 dragoons, thereby negating any point of entrance to that island for the Tories. They will simply land on an unoccupied square and attack from there (mainland America). I am 99.9% sure they cannot attack right from the ships, they need to land somewhere first. This way you can sort of "herd" them pretty much wherever you want.
I know it gets really cumbersome to manage that many colonies, but this particular game is too good not to milk it to the limit. :))

Thank you for the clarification. I think I might be running out of time for colonist generation if I'm going to be the first to declare independence, but I'll see what I can do. Colonies further inland won't need heavy fortifications, so those might work as farmsteads.
I'm fairly certain you can't block the Tories out. If there's no open square, they'll land on top of your units (and destroy them). At least, I have vague memories of testing this in a game a long time ago, attempting to block the entire coastline.
The colony management doesn't really bother me, I'm just worried it'll become a bit drawn-out to watch. :-p

Yeah, you're right, if you block all points of entrance, the royalists will land anyway and capture all units in that square without a fight... I just tested this. So I was wrong about that. :)) Still a good place to settle, easy to defend due to its proximity to the continent.
