I was aboard that train and was aware of the fuel problems. When I checked into my room in Fort Worth, I washed off a lot of soot, then slept till noon before taking Amtrak back to Austin. I don't think the train went to Hearne, because it changed tracks at Valley Junction to the west, after going under Hwy. 79. That Hearne scene might have really been Marlin, where the street is next to the track.
@@NeilADahl ....there was a mix up on fuel delivery in San Antonio...truck went to Waco not San Antonio. After a 2 hour delay UP accepted a different grade that was available in San Antonio. Thus the heavy black smoke. 3985 used almost 4,000 gallons from San Antonio to Austin. At Waco, crew connected to a diesel to power us back to Fort Worth at 2am. It was a marvelous experience despite the delays! UP was great....they feed us BBQ in Taylor, Texas.
Love the sound of the wheels and rods
Is it me or I just love the sound of 3985's bell?
I love it too

This is epic.
This is a fantastic Series, Neil.
If 3985 can make the curve into Austin the 4014 sure as hell could too!
3985 took it pretty fast too
Awesome video my compliments sir and thank you
I never knew there was a Gause, Texas.
now that she is like her big brother 4014
How do those hot box detectors actually work?
sensors located by the axle bearings on each side.
also sensors on the tracks in various spots, usually crossings.

A fine machine and some excellent video! But that smoke is just horrendous. Was that a mechanical issue, poor firing or both?!
They had gotten a bad batch of fuel. Neil
was she running on coal or oil at this time, the UP Big Boy 4014 is going to be converted to burn Oil
She was running on oil. Neil

Did they deliberately keep the track speed down in the peoples Republic of Austin?
According to the timetable they were running mostly the established speed limits.
PUSH THE DAMN CHOKE IN COUGH COUGH
The smoke is mainly for show because the people like to see it, there's usually not that much.
