They remind me of Faith No More in the way that both have the most versatile vocalists that switch between deep growls to unbelievable singing effortlessly. Also the switch between styles of music that they are both able to do without, as you said, sounding like they are 'trying' to do a different style. And each musician is extremely talented in their own right.

This weekend Jinjer played on Alcatraz in Belgium and (despite the technical difficulties...) it was really great to hear Mediator and Vortex in their more stripped down live versions.
If you're interested, Jinjer posted the recording on their Facebook page and Mediator and Vortex are at the end of the set, about 40 minutes in the video.

Been a Jinjer fan for about 1 year. Saw Judgement and Punishment first, then Pisces. The third thing I saw was WIGBTO. As soon as I watched this, I phoned up a producer friend and ssid" I think this band can do anything." After one year of listening to everything they have ever done and learning everything I can about them, I still stand by that statement I made to my producer friend one year ago.

I've been drumming for over 40 years and Vlad is teaching me things I hadn't thought of doing. There are thousands of great drummers in the world and then there are those that come out of left field, self-taught, chop a holic, trained in another instrument for a completely altered sense of rhythm just once in a rare while. His ingenuity is refreshing and I've yet to hear a boring drum track. I'm a little too old for blast beats (though I still try) but he's got some chops that inspire me to keep practicing. Hope they have a long career together. Congrats on the kudos, you deserve it.

    @arc6017 3 роки тому +3

First, congratulations on the shoutout by Jinjer! You deserve the recognition for the amazing work you do in here!
I understand your opinion about the song being good but not one of your favorites, it´s very raw and straitghfoward (compared to what they are doing in more recent albuns) and altought I love everything they have been doing, for us longtime fans, this kind of sound will always have a special place in our head. I love this one so much, the intro, the riff, the bass lines, the low growls, the clean section, the more straigthfoward simple lyrics, the beautiful outro, everything!
And this performance is gold! Like you said, Tatiana pulls you in with her vocals and overall persona on stage, but then the band altogether definitely grabs you with the music and you are hooked!
About the outro, they usually have one or more independent short compositions like that (jazzy, ska, reaggae, etc) throughout their albuns (with the last one Macro being the exception) and it´s so good! And I missed those on Macro.
Well, if you wanna try something recent for now try the much more complex "Ape", it´s a litlle stick of dynamite: short, fast and explosive or try another live one from Kiev: "On The Top" performance in that venue is my favorite.
Definitely go back later to earlier Jinjer, to check how they got to this point: "Sit, Stay, Roll Over is probably one of their most fast and furious tracks and it´s the song that got them the deal with Napalm Records.
Wow, this comment got loooooong :S Again, great work, always a joy watching your reactions, keep it up! Cheers.

It's fun that you're reacting to some of their older stuff! Eugene has mentioned that he is inspired by Opeth (Blackwater Park in particular), so it is fitting that your mind drifted to Opeth at the end.

Oh, can you imagine being there? A small-ish regional festival, a side stage, a daytime slot, you're expecting to hear something local both in scope and in quality, and you hear Jinjer just pound it at world-class levels of talent and sound like that? You'd think you'd just struck gold, wouldn't you? :D The crowd was so into it, too! And the band brought serious energy!
Another reactor who's in a regional-tier band, said on this video that while that looked like a small crowd, at that point in their careers, any band would be _beyond_ thrilled to get that many people, and to get them that energized. The hard ones to work up the energy for are when there are a dozen people in a bar and half of them wish you'd shut up.

They couldn't even if they wanted to, copyright matters are handled by the rights' owners, not the band. In Jinjer's case, channels only get a harmless copyright notice that allows everything but monetization. However, I've recently noticed a general lack of that in many reactions, don't know if YT's copyright "police" is on vacations or they changed their policy towards reactions' channels.

Interestingly this song was released on an album with a different drummer, but Vlad of course puts his spin on it. It's from their first full length album, when the songs were more straightforward, but this song is still one of my favorites. They have gone more and more progressive and djenty (in my opinion) album by album, I would guess partly because of the introduction Vlad to the band.

You can't "Love" them all... I know you like more intricate Jinjer tracks that build to a climax with lots of layers etc.. BUT Dude THIS song live is when the crowd goes the most apeshit Crazy. It's "THAT" song for them. This is from "Cloud Factory" that came out in 2014, yeah it's not as intricate to what they've evolved to but it's my Fav..After you do the "Outlander" and "Cloud Factory" just listen to the whole CD. It had to be re-released years later cause they had trouble with distribution in Ukraine, they weren't signed to any major label then. When you factor in how financially strapped they were it's a great piece of work.

This song is actually off of their first full length album, Cloud Factory (there was an EP before this which had a handful of other songs) so, this is probably the oldest song you've reacted to (at the time you recorded this) in terms of when it was originally written. Back then a lot of their songs were much more "straight forward" (though not all of them). So far you've reacted to (oldest to newest, Album in parentheses)
Who is Gonna Be the One (Cloud Factory)
I Speak Astronomy (King of Everything)
    Pisces (King of Everything)
    Perennial (Micro)
    Teacher, Teacher (Micro)
Pit of Consciousness (Macro/Alive in Melbourne (since you reacted to the version from that live album, basically))
    Judgement and Punishment (Macro)
    Home Back (Macro)
    Retrospection (Macro)
    Vortex (Wallflowers)
    Mediator (Wallflowers)
(as of me commenting here, I see you've already reacted to the rest of Wallflowers)
If I were going to recommend songs to react to, here is what I would do (oldest to newest, do whatever order you feel like though I think it would be interesting if you started working from the early days and worked your way back up to the present to see the evolution of the band)
Exposed as a Liar (Official Video) (Inhale, Don't Breathe)
Scissors (Official Video) (Inhale, Don't Breathe)
    Outlander (Official Video) (Cloud Factory)
No Hoard of Value (Lyric Video) (Cloud Factory) (don't be thrown off that this is a "lyric video", it's more of an animated video but the lyrics are part of the animations and graphics)
Cloud Factory (Official Video) (Cloud Factory)
Bad Water (Official Video) (Cloud Factory)
Captain Clock (Live at Resurrection Fest 2018) (King of Everything)
Words of Wisdom (Official Video) (King of Everything)
Just Another (Official Video) (King of Everything)
Sit Stay Roll Over (Official Video) (King of Everything)
    Ape (Official Video) (Micro)
On the Top (Official Video ) (Macro)
Judgement & Punishment (Tatiana One Take Vocal Performance) (Macro)
    Noah (Official Video) (Macro)
    The Prophecy (Official Video) (Macro)
Of course there are more songs on all of these albums and EPs but these are the ones that have content so you aren't just reacting to the audio though I suppose you could do that just like you did with Wallflowers.

The song itself is from the Cloud Factory album (hence the environmental aspects of the lyrics) from 2014 actually, from when they still had a second guitarist and before Vlad joined the band. This live version sounds much better than the original studio recording though, and it's one of the best displays of Tatiana's stage presence, as well as how low she can go. I believe this gig was planned to become a recorded DVD or something.

They've definitely gone through an evolution in their sound from the early works. The first EP and Album were almost straight up metalcore that sounded like a band from 10 years before them even. Ever since Vlad joined they've gotten way more progressive and just more mature I think as musicians.

I struggle a bit with Opeth. I only 'discovered' them a few months ago, though I'd heard the name for at least 15 years, mostly spoken by fans of theirs who found out I liked Dream Theater.
I don't know why, but I decided to go backwards through their discography, so starting with In Cauda Veneum, which was neat but not all that compelling. And then Sorceress, which just _enthralled_ me. Just spellbound the whole way through (except that the very end bugs me with the ending organ solo just kinda stopping with the player speaking over it, which just seemed unworthy of the rest of the album to me). And then I tried to listen to some older, heavier stuff and it just... compared to the incredible intricacy and just **chef's kiss** jazz perfection of the chord progressions in tracks like Strange Brew and The Seventh Sojourn, it just sounded so ham-fisted... like a simplified version of Dream Theater, but replacing LaBrie's... questionable vocals with an even more questionable growling style that just didn't seem to fit the music to my ears.
Is there somewhere else you'd recommend I jump in along Opeth's journey/career, given that you know I love Jinjer and Dream Theater, and thought Sorceress was pure, mind-melting _art_ until the last 10 seconds or so?

I first got into them in around late 1999/early 2000 when I was 15/16 so they were a big impact on my developing taste at the time.
My favourite of their albums (in roughly this order as of now) would be:
      1. Still Life
      2. Blackwater Park
      3. Ghost Reveries
      4. My Arms, Your Hearse
      5. Morningrise
      6. Everything else is interchangeable...
Their later albums are cool and all - but for me, the early to middle period of Opeth is the Opeth I grew up with, and it holds very a special place in my heart.

    • @barefootalien

@@JWSoundworks2 That's cool. That's about when I got into Dream Theater, too. Scenes From a Memory was my first album and it, too has a special place in my heart. But in the years that followed, while I loved every album at the time and some of them are deeply nostalgic for me, I also think they've done most of their best work in the last 10 years or so.
Except for their latest single, The Alien, which I was disappointed in, and felt it was kind of phoned in. I hope that they, as always, just suck at choosing singles and suck at music videos, and that within the greater context of the album it'll make more sense. And be mastered better because dear lord the hyper normalization on that would've been a bit extreme and blandifying even for pop...!

@@JWSoundworks2 Ah, I'm pretty much the opposite. Late to the party and only discovering them from Operation Paralysis and beyond until their demise. I went through a period (90s and noughties) where I got a bit disillusioned with music. I struggle a bit with regards to Vlad... I can't and wouldn't deny that he's phenomenal! And yet it's hard to call him 'elite' in the usual sense after watching someone like Evgeny Novikov (of Slaughter to Prevail) just absolutely mince the set with levels of speed and precision that hardly seem human. Vlad, on _that_ spectrum, is no slouch! But he's also not on that level. His double kicks are a touch sloppy at times, for example, and rarely as fast; his blast beats are half-time in terms of kick, where Evgeny's are double-time or even faster, as another example.
So, rather, I've come to think of Vlad as an elite-level epic badass more in line with someone like Bernard Purdy, Mike Portnoy, or Jeff Porcaro... drummers known for their taste and feel, their development of name-worthy grooves and techniques, and their compositional and song-supporting talents, rather than their raw speed, power and precision, like Evgeny, Mangini, or Jonathan Moffett.
That said... Vlad _does_ have the most effortless four-limb separation I've ever seen. Even Mike Mangini looks like he has to concentrate, and often builds up polyrhythmic patterns one step at a time. Vlad just... _does_ it. He'll be keeping up a quarter note pattern on the hi-hat with his left foot, a 1/3 groove with tons of ghost notes in a different tempo with his left hand, give cymbal accents in line with either, both, or neither with his right hand, and mesh with Eugene's basslines with his right foot (and occasional flam with his left), all at the same time, and look relaxed and chill as hell. He doesn't work up to it, he doesn't seem to focus particularly hard, he doesn't put on a showy face or persona... he just _does_ it like it's nothing at all. I've never seen anything like it!

    • @MickH60
      @MickH60 3 роки тому +1

Waste of time comparing musicians mate, It doesn't work like that, you'd have to have two drummers play exactly the same thing if you really wanted a comparison , but really, who cares, individuality is what most want, not everyone doing the same things exactly........?

    • @barefootalien
      @barefootalien 3 роки тому

@@MickH60 I get what you're saying, and even agree with the sentiment behind it, but... it _does_ work like that.
Some drummers are crazy technical. They play precisely in the pocket like a metronome, and can go ridiculously fast, like Evgeny's heel-toe double-pedal 32nd note roll in, for example, Demolisher. I don't believe for a second that Vlad could come anywhere close to that speed. He'd have to change his technique, probably stop wearing shoes, etc.
On the other hand, the way Vlad drags the beat to increase drama, especially on blast beats, creates a _groove_ that is really compelling, even if the blast beats themselves are relatively slow and simple by comparison.
And I _have_ seen drummers playing exactly the same thing, and nothing about that made me think I couldn't have made similar comparisons across different pieces/styles/genres. Speed is speed. Feel is feel. Apples are apples (and can, by the way, be quite easily compared to oranges; that's a silly colloquialism :D )
