Blind Guardian is basically 90s European power metal royalty, and with such a variety of material over their almost 40 year career. General recommendations based on this one:
Same record: "Nightfall" or "Time Stands Still (At the Iron Hill)"
More orchestral: "At the Edge of Time" or "Sacred Worlds" (the studio version is the 9 minute one)
More elaborate: "And Then There Was Silence" or "Punishment Divine"
More grit: "Another Holy War" or "Imaginations From the Other Side"
Ballads: "The Bard's Song" or "Skalds and Shadows"
Thrashier teen metal: "Run For the Night" or "Valhalla"
The usual UA-cam recommendations usually gravitate towards the few songs with a really good live recording because it's a visual medium, but for anyone willing to dive into the studio records, there's some really awesome stuff in there. The 80s stuff is definitely more generic, since it took a couple of records for them to find their voice, but since then every single record has a significant chunk of the fanbase who swear it's the best one.

You've heard the vocalist Hansi Kürsch before in Ayreon's "The Day that the World Breaks Down". Amazing singer. At 25 mins, I'm reminded of the chord progression to Jethro Tull's "Locomotive Breath" which can't be a bad thing...I recommend "The Bard's Song and Valhalla" Live...ua-cam.com/video/i-IcX_bccFc/v-deo.html

Excellent breakdown. I'm not sure I would count myself as a huge BG fan anymore, but they were an important band for me in the late 90s when I was getting in to metal. This album (Nightfall in Middle-Earth) especially I still come back to pretty often, even though I don't generally care much for power metal as a genre anymore. This album came out in 1998 and it was already their 6th studio album, so yeah they have been around for a while. I think outside of the typical intruments, this album only had some flutes, acoustic guitar and the rest are keyboards, don't quote me on that though.
Hansi Kurch's vocals have always been the standout to me, he has great range and seemingly effortless access to a lot of distortion as well, goes really well with the theatrical storytelling style he has developed into.
For next song from BG, not sure but I wouldn''t recommend the Bard's Song & Valhalla combo. These are more of a example of how crazy audience participiation can be and they're a probably a little too simple to really break down as you like to do. If you want to check them out anyway, I would recommend any live from Wacken for that.
I think I would recommend maybe Born In a Mourning Hall or The Script For My Requiem, these are both from album Imaginations From The Other Side, their 5th album. Their thrash/speed metal roots are a bit more evident here, but you do already get the vocal harmonies, lots of melodic riffs and the folky influences here and there.
I would be curious what someone who's more familiar with their later material would suggest.

Hi, I am a 43y old hobby musician and listened to BG since I was 14 and also saw them live on numerous occasions. They had their ups and down, their peaks and lows. One clear breaking point is when the drummer changed around 2005. Another breaking point is when they incorporated a lot of orchestral / synth stuff and started to put a gazillions of layers over each other, resulting in alienating a lot of fans of the "oldschool punky speedy metal".
I took the time to give some context to help you chose your next song.
Amateur era, teenager coming together in dad's basement:
    "Majesty" and "Valhalla"
Growth era, made connections with many musicians in the german metal underground scene:
"Traveller in Time", "The Last Candle"
Established in the german metal and RPG scene - era :
"Quest for Tanelorn", "Theate Of Pain", "Somewhere far beyond". Bonus: Queen cover "Spread your wings" (They were Queen fans after all).
Breakthrough era, on TV a lot, music videos etc. :
"Imaginations from the other side", "Bright Eyes", "Another Holy War",
Their Magnum Opus, their biggest success - era, Nightfall album: " I really recommed listening to this alone, in a complete session, as it is interwoven with storytelling, voice acting inbetween songs, and tells a cohesive story. It's about the Silmarillion - Lord Of The Rings.
This is generally considered peak Blind Guardian by fans in terms of "true Blind Guardian essence" (sing along songs, melody, storytelling, solos) It's also their most succesful album. I woudln't like to recommend any particular song, but if I must, it would be "Mirror Mirror", "Into The Storm" and "Nightfall".
    - A 4 year break, probably counting money -
Then comes the era after their peak, where they changed from Metallica producer "Flemming Rasmussen" to their own inhouse stuff for the next album called "A Night At The Opera" (sounds familiar? 😀 ). Many consider it the turning point, where the band started to shift focus. You will also find many voices that say their sound went downhill from there, as they started producing inhouse. Less defined, more muddy, the mix generally wasn't supporting they gazillion layers they started to add. Notable recommendations from that time:
    "Battlefield",
    "Punishment Divine",
"And Then There Was Silence". (They were very proud of that one. A 15 min piece that they worked on qutie some time, their first attempt at going full epic mode, which will be a pattern for the future.)
    - Another 4 year break -
Drummer leaves, because he cannot identify with the new direction. New drummer. New era in terms of sound (muddyness, no highs, overloaded mids, auto tune), general vibe and well, drumming. Fans were divided from now on, many refering to "the old Blind Guardian" vs "the new Blind Guardian".
    Notable mentions:
    "This will never end",
"Fly" (complete break away of their traditions).
    - Yet another 4 year break -
They return with a mix of new elements and old elements (back to the roots) with the album "At the edge of Time. Notable mentions:
10 Min epic song: "Sacred Worlds" (featured in a pc videogame called "Sacred"),
    "Valkyries",
"Wheel of Time (1,9 mio clicks on YT)".
    - This time we get a 5 year break, BG has made enough money, the can just take their time how they see fit -
They come back with an album that has a better sound, still not up to Flemming Rasmussens producing, but better than the rest(Beyond The Red Mirror). A lot of choirs and multi layers voices, many epic parts, orchestral support, and a lot of medium tempo. But often also decribed as lacking typical BG originality in melody writing.
    Notable mentions:
    "The Ninth Wave",
"At The Edge Of Time (yes, same name as their album 5y earlier, confusing),
    "Distant Memories",
and another 10 min finale song called "Grand Parade".
    - 4 year break -
Here is where it becomes interesting (or weird, depending on your viewpoint): They had been collecting material for a "only orchestra and voice" album. Something like a rock - opera - orchestral thing. There is even a song from the previous album on their, just completely re-done, bcause they said that material fits both: The metal band and this "side project". I don't think it sold that many copies, it was more like an experiment, but it had it's fans. It was recored by the orchestra in Prague, czech republic, and features only them plus the lead singers voice. It's called "Legacy Of The Dark Lands". I will skip recomendations for that one, but mention it for the record.
    - 7 years have passed - (Not including the orchestral side project)
The grandpa era: The original oldschoold Blind Guardian fans mostly are in their 40s and 50s. Many probably not even listen to them anymore. The band itself is moving towards an age where an end of their career is in sight. The singers voice is still good in terms of expression but you can hear the loss of some qualities in the tone and frequencies. Naturally, some things change through age.
However, it seems the band always has succesfully found new fans in the younger audience, that keeps them alive.
Given all that, after 7 years, it was kind of impressive to see them release another album called "The God Machine". Stripped of all orchestral elements, focus on "only the band".
    Notable mentions:
Straight forward, more dark, simple and catchy opener: "Deliver Us From Evil",
Rock-style "Secrets Of The American Gods",
and one of vocalist's favorites: "Architects Of Doom".
I have tried to select songs that I think fit the evolution and era of the band af that particular time and album. Sometimes that coincides with the popularity of that song, sometimes it doesn't. I tried to leave out my personal taste. You could also make a list of songs through the eras that show a consistency, as they generally tried to always make one song per album that is "Close to old school Blind Guardian".
    - Ballads Addendum -
Last but not least, BG has made A LOT of ballads. I excluded them up there. Here is a list of all ballads, in order of release, they made:
    "Lord Of The Rings"
"The Bard's Song - In The Forrest" (musically connected to the follow up non-ballad song "The Bard's Song - The Hobbit", but no one really reacts to the 2nd part and it's not played a lot live).
    "A Past And Future Secret"
    "The Eldar"
"The Maiden and the Minstrel Knight"
"Carry the Blessed Home" (Semi-Ballad with drum and rock parts)
    "Skalds and Shadows"
    "Curse My Name"
    "Miracle Machine"
    "Let It Be No More"
I hope this helps to pick something for your future endevours with that band, which an interesting phenomenon going from "regular introvert teenagers sitting in their dad's basement" to "Every fantasy roleplayer in Germany knows this band and you saw their t-shirts en masse on any fantasy convention or Magic:The Gathering event" on to the internat age, where "Everyone knows Blind Guardian". Yet they still live like regular people in their hometown and have zero rockstar attitude.
    - Cover Addendum -
They did a lot covers too:
"Dream a Little Dream of Me" -Ozzie Nelson (1931)
"Mr. Sandman" - The Chordettes (1958)
    "Barbara Ann" -Beachboys (1965)
    "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" -Iron Butterfly (1968)
    "The Wizard" -Uriah Heep (1972)
    "Spread Your Wings -Queen (1977)
"Beyond the Realms of Death" -Judas Priest (1978)
    "Hallelujah" -Deep Purple (1980)
"Don't Break the Circle" -Demon (1982)
"Don't Talk to Strangers" -Dio. (1983)
    "Trial by Fire" -Satan (1983)
    "To France" -Mike Oldfield (1984)
"You're the Voice" -John Farnham (1986)

Agree, it needs to be featured, sooner or later.
That song is very progressive in the original meaning of the word, without relying on usual Prog tropes - as such, while retaining the BG sound, it might not be the most representative as an early introduction. What it DOES offer is music of great dramatic impact and release at the end (especially if one loosely follows the story), with what in Classical music would be called a fully developed structural arch.
Would make a good LONG reaction from JW, but perhaps a few shorter ones to come to grips with the band's style may be the recipe?

  • @MoenchCaesar
    @MoenchCaesar 2 місяці тому +10

Duuuude thoroughly enjoyed the reaction! BG is many a metalheads favourite and Mirror Mirror is a good general starter, that has a bit of everything they do.
The album as a whole holds a dear place in my heart, due to it being a concept album about Tolkien's Silmarillion, and i think quite a few people regard it as high in part due to that fact. I would argue that some of their most beloved songs are the ones most suitable for a live audience and this is certainly the case for Mirror Mirror, being their preferred Outro Song of choice at Concerts. Nightfall has interesting stuff sitting in there still, it's not all just straight metal and they have some quite moody songs on their, compared to Mirror MIrror.
In regards to Valhalla and Bard's Song (In the Forest), i don't think they'd peak your interest as much, as part of the reaction value for both songs is derived from the crowd interaction those songs usually bring with them, both being very much crowd favourites and any self respecting blind guardian fan can rattle the lyrics off in their sleep. I think i'd rather see you react to something like And Then There was Silence (Their longest song), Punishment Divine of the same album as the former or, if you are in for something a bit different, in 2019 they released an Orchestral Album (Legacy of the Dark Lands) , no metal full orchestra which is not everyones thing, as far as i have seen, but maybe you'd find it interesting to give that a listen.
Also they do lean in to the folky side quite heavily at times, with songs like the aforementioned Bards Song, Curse my Name, Skalds and Shadows etc., which i find to be an enjoyable change up when listening to an album, but it might not be everyones cup of tea.
In regards to the vocals (you might have recognized the vocalist from Ayreons Stuff, he's not a first on the channel ;D) there are certainly a lot of vocal layers, which is, i believe, part of why it was as unique in 90s, as it wasn't as prevelant in metal/power metal back then, although then again i'm not an expert on the matter. But Hansi certainly has a fairly unique singing style for the genre, he is a gem. (Rob Halford is a good catch aswell, def an inspiration, they covered beyond the realms of death by Judas, if you want to compare)
Anyways, sorry for the wall of text ! I'm always down for some more Blind Guardian !

I dont know much about mysic technicalities and that kind of things, but it's very enjoyable to listen to you talk about it. If you'll ever return to Blind Guardian, take a listen to my favourite song at this time The Last Candle. Or any song recommended here by the other folks haha 😂.
Time Stands Still, Nightfall or Imaginations from the Other Side, are some more songs close to my heart. Anyway, thank you for this amazing video! Cheers.

Queen is a big influence on Blind Guardian and other German power metal bands too like Helloween and Gamma Ray.

  • @Evil_Peter
    @Evil_Peter 2 місяці тому +7

A great reaction and analysis, as always. That was quite the fortunate song choice as this is from the time where the band got more progressive. Their early stuff is very much straight basic power metal so I don't think you would have liked a song like Valhalla nearly as much.
You are spot on that the band has a lot of audience participation with their melodies. Audience participation is a huge thing in general and The Bard's Song is the main example of that where the audience sings along the entire time. I've even heard the band let the audience sing the entire thing on their own.
Picking up on similarities with Queen was also appropriate as Queen is one of their biggest inspirations. They also mention Queensrÿche a lot (unclear if it's because they also have 'queen' in the name :P ).

I am late to the party here, but watching and hearing you figuring the bits and pieces out really made me fall in love again with a song I have probably listened to hundreds of times throughout two decades and have grown tired of, which can happen when you discover the band at the age of 14 and devour all their material. So thank you very much for that.
As others have said, I would love you to dissect "And Then There Was Silence", a 14 minutes epos with lots of juicy progressiveness going on. As a huge fan of Prog myself I am sure you will find things to get nerdy about.
All the love from Germany. ❤

Everyone will have favorites to offer from BLIND GUARDIAN's dozen albums over 30+ years.
My favorite song after all remains probably the ominous "Imaginations from the Other Side" (it opened the eponymous album in 1995). On the second thought, anything from the said album, or the entirety of it (!), would make a great choice. That was the time that BLIND GUARDIAN were completing their evolution into the Epic Power metal style, with the Thrash and Speed undercurrents still running strong. It made for a naturally appealing combination! From their earlier period, I could recommend "Traveler in Time" or "The Last Candle", from the new era - something like "Wheel of Time" would bring, again, refreshing elements.
And then there is "Nightfall". Whatever you classify it as, it is just blood-chillingly beautiful.

Oh yes, the crowd sings the hell out of their songs, the choruses and guitar melodies.
Andre's signature lead guitar style is playing melodies, like a song within a song for the solo, and not just mindless shredding, not that shredding is always mindless.

André Olbrich, the guitarist on the song likes to play the vocal tracks or play the same thing that the singer sings, that is his trademark, in this song it is not quite as pronounced, but if you listen to other songs you can hear it

First and foremost. what a awesome reaction. Blind guardian has been a stellar band for many years. they started as a speed/trash metal band in the mid 80ys Their first record Battalions of fear in 1988 is a barebone speed/trashmetal record. with a raw production they play their socks off on this record. from the first few seconds into Majesty you know what youre getting into. best songs are Majesty Gurdian off the blind and the titlte track Battalions of fear.
Follow the blind from 1989 is a speed/power metal record with bits and pieces off trash metal. Guitarist Marcus Siepen stated that they were "listening to a lot of thrash metal bands like Testament or Forbidden, and that's why Follow the Blind was a bit heavier. This album has a bit off a better production. less raw sounding. Fan favorites are Banish from Sanctuary. Follow the blind and Valhalla ( the later is co written by kai hansen Credited as the Godfather off Power metal. He formed Helloween in 1983 and formed Gamma ray in 1989 after he left helloween)
Tales from the Twilight World 1990. is their first album with a proper production in my eyes. they leave behind the trash elements. i see this a step up to Follow the Blind. a better production Hansi his vocals are better. this is also the first record where they really start making usage off overdubs on vocals and guitars. Fan favorites are Traveler in Time. Welcome to dying. and the stellar, The last candle it has some amazing dual lead solos.
Somewhere far beyond from 1992 its a stellar record. This is The album saw the band creating its own original sound, while still employing most of their speed/power metal techniques. The band uses more time changes on this record. Slowly proggy elements are brought in. This album has their first ballad. Fan favorites are Time what is time. Journey Through the Dark. The Bard's Song - In the Forest (When played live its mostly accoustic Hansi doesnt have to sing this song the crowd does that for him ) Prelude is Pipers calling. goes straight into the title track somewhere far beyond. this song has it all the speed. the backing tracks on it are already very Queenish. its very well written.
Imaginations from the other side 1995 .This iss the first record not produced by Kalle trap. The band were not happy with the production on the last 2 albums. they searched for a new producer. they found one in Flemming Rasmussen ( yes the one who did 3 Metallica records) Rhythm guitarist Marcus Siepen would later reflect that Rasmussen took them to a completely different level, in any aspect. This album is amazing it has alot off time changes there is not a single bad song on this record. My personal favorites are the title track. Im alive. Born in a morning hall. Bright eyes and another holy war.
Nightfall in Middle-Earth album 1998 is a concept album based on J. R. R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion, a book of tales from the First Age of Middle-earth, recounting the troubled history of Beleriand as the Elves battle with the Dark Lord Morgoth.[2][3][4] The album contains not only songs but also spoken parts narrating parts of the story. I personally never got into this record. never liked the spoken words between it. but the songwriting is top notch. this is where they go full Queenish sound and full proggy mode. Still keeping their legacy as a band that can play fast with Musicianship to die for. best songs for me are Into the storm. Nightfall. Mirror Mirror and Time Stands Still (At the Iron Hill)
A Night at the opera 2002 This album continues a stylistic change from power metal into a more progressive sound, with multiple overlaid vocals, choirs, orchestral keys and guitar leads and less emphasis on powerful guitar riffs and heavy rhythms. As a result, drummer Thomen"the omen" Stauch would leave the group, citing dissatisfaction with the direction the group was going in.My favorites are Precious Jerusalem. Battlefield. Punishment Divine. and the Epic long one 15 minutes And Then There Was Silence.
Last one is a Live DVD called Imaginations Through the Looking Glass from 2003 The band intended to record a DVD since early 1998, however, due to the band's high requirements, no existing metal festival had been considered suitable. Instead, they decided to create their own festival, back in their homeland. The First Blind Guardian Festival was held in Coburg, Germany, on 16-17 June 2003. it lasted two days, with the band playing during both nights. The entire show was professionally recorded and subsequently released on DVD on 14 June 2004. The cover art was painted by Leo Hao. The setlist was partly based on a poll conducted on the band's website, which (combined with the amount of time the band had) led to a varied set with classics like "The Bard's Song (In the Forest)" but also some rarely played songs such as Somewhere Far Beyond.
Thats gonna be it from me. Hope you will be able to read it all. Pick a few songs from this list. Hope it gives you some insight in the band.

This whole album is fantastic and more on their proggy side, Mirror Mirror is iconic and probably their best song (Curse of Feanor and Into the Storm are fun in a similar way too). Bright Eyes is another song that feels like it’d be power metal that could hit well for prog/queen fans. Blind Guardian were the band that made me good with power metal, since then got into Rhapsody and Slough Feg most besides them (and then because of Slough Feg ended up finding Hammers of Misfortune who are one of the greatest, most underrated prog bands of all time).

Good to see you uploading again, John! I hope you're keeping well. I would love to hear your thoughts on "Whom Gods Destroy - In The Name Of War" - I think you'll dig it! 😉 🤘

Dude, you need to react to The Bard's Song & Valhalla - Live at Wacken Open Air 2016 with Blind Guardian.

You had heard Hansi Kürsch in the Song The Day that the world breaks down from Ayreon. He has one of the most unique voice. And I think beside of that, Blind Guardian is not a typical Powermetal Band. I cant tell why but Blind Guardian is very unique

I would think the uniqueness of sound is due to their roots in Thrash metal, from which they developed into epic storytelling/"bard" Power metal and then, as a natural next step, started incorporating more Symphonic/Prog elements. Regular Power metal bands usually have their preferences on their sleeves and start out playing major power cords over the double-base rhythm foundation complete with "helium" vocals right away. With BLIND GUARDIAN, we have different pedigree based in much heavier realms, a commanding vocalist who can go really low, or rough, belt or croon with the best of them, AND guitarists (especially Andre on the lead!) who have mastered an huge range of techinques, and do not shy away from changing things up at any turn - while constantly maintaining their recognizable sound/style (this is where the Brian May comparison is incredibly apt). Everyone in this band is just so versatile they can produce any creative device and a multitude of layers in a given song, so - as an important last bit - there is no place for rut and most songs truly repay repeated listening.
Their recent dabbling with orchestral music just puts the "cherry" on (over?) the top. Thankfully they have not gone all Hans Zimmer on us, as the latest "real" album stepped up the heaviness again. :)

I've never been a big fan of Blind Guardian (and I probably won't be), I'm rather one of those fans who used to listen to Helloween :) and this is the eternal dilemma: Metallica or Megadeth?? 🤣🤣
btw. Of course, I recommend you to listen to the live version from Wacken '16 - "The Bard Song" & "Valhalla", it is a historical classic and even as a (former) fan of Helloween, I appreciate it very much.
But what does he write about? I recommend Helloween (Pumpkins United, live) "Keeper on the 7 keys", or something else.
But I also recommend Symphony X - "The Odyssey", something from Pain of Salvation...
    And of course Nevermore 🤘🤘🤘

In terms of astonishing bands you have never heard of, I recommend you watch something by the legendary French progressive band Magma- led by drummer Christian Vander form more than half a century and still vital. More goes on any given Magma song than in most songs anywhere, and I recommend this short (8 minute) composition, but them- most of their songs are way, way longer. This could be your next Jinjer! I really like some BG, but I sometimes get really tired of the 100 vocal layers.

Yeah I totally get that, especially around the couple albums after Nightfall they went a wee bit overboard with the vocal layers and choruses. I tend to prefer their earlier stuff where they had bit more thrash influence in there. Besides Nightall I like Imaginations from the Other Side and Somewhere Far Beyond, their 2 albums before Nightfall.

Dont react to the Valhalla / Bards Song that so many reactors do... It's like reacting to Metallica playing in Moscow.... Its simply not about the music. It doesnt do the BG music justice.

Did I say Flash was in the 70’s? I don’t remember saying that, especially as I know it’s 80s. Been a while since this video was made, so I can’t remember what I said. I actually have a breakdown to Flash on Patreon.

Live is much better. Especially when it comes to blind guardian. Its not so much like "Queen" in the refrain. The voice is stronger. I am a BIG Fan of them live. But not when it comes to the Studio Versions....i dont like the Mastering/ studio mix.
