My son was 5yrs old when one of the members of the band picked him up over his head on stage. The venue had a wall that was too tall for my son to see over so one of the roadies flipped over a monitor cover and set him on the stage. The joke of the night was that they were " they might be Giants, the band that holds things up" as they went on later the expected. At the end of the show they all held something over their heads as the left the stage. One of the Johns carried my son. I got him back just so you know...
@@IrisGlowingBlueOr Dans. Or a new Marty. It’s too bad Marty Beller replaced Dan Hickey. Nothing against Marty, but I just loved that whole two Johns and three Dans (“The Band of Dans,” as they called them”) thing they had going on.
Thats really accurate. Looking back, some of the best songs/shows you'll see have not just the crowd, but the band/performer smiling. And I don't mean a music video stage smile. I mean a real s#$t eating grin. Now that I think about it, it's more rare than it should be.
@@TheHutchy01 I'd hardly say 80, at least not soon (John Linnell will be turning 62 in 2021, so he's still got almost 2 *decades* to go before he hits the big 80)
I like how the top comment is "That was great!" and the second one is "This is frightfully bad." That's the sort of contrast TMBG is known and loved for.
It gets carried away by those pesky time flies (along with archery projectiles, apparently). As they say, time flies like an arrow, but fruit flies like a banana.
this is my father's religious experience. we have to watch this shit every year with a mistletoe yankee candle and spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread because we're irish but the kind of irish who don't know wtf is our actual heritage.
I loved listening to Flood in high school, a punk kid in the nineties in the South- the first thing I ever heard about Chumbawamba was that they were really a kind of anarchist collective
"We don't know how the song goes, and we don't know the words." After which they then proceed to perform it perfectly, arguably better than the original. Such is TMBG.
It's likely, and oh God, you'd be sweating up a storm in that tiny room with how many other people? But I think that's also how you make a really good party happen, too.
Yeah, i was thinking 'wow, i remember the lyrics as being pretty simple'. Looked them up and yeah, it's just a lot of repeating phrases that are fun to sing. 😄
I honestly think its def one of the best covers, Yea it may not sound as great as the original; but it definitely scratched the surface and had air time on the same level as the original. And the main thing is, they added their own twist, like a signature and a salute to the original and most importantly they had fun and that's what makes the majority of higher spirit songs like this, sound so great. #avclub
The only choice I'll question is who sings which part, I'd have thought Linnell would have taken the female part being that he's naturally the higher singer, but this way round is definitely more memorable.
Pff, I once had the "I get knocked down but I get up again, you're never gonna keep me down" part stuck in my head for a week straight but I still love it.
How great would it hav been to be working in that office in the early 2010s? "I know you're probably super busy with what you're working on, but would you mind taking a break for a bit to sing back up for They Might Be Giants?"
This is the best They Might Be Giants song that wasn't a They Might Be Giants song. This setting, plus group singing along, is the best ever. I must have watched this about 200 times already. My daughter is a bigger TMBG fan than me! And I woke them up in DISNEY WORLD at the Animal Kingdom to "Hot Dog" just to annoy them to get up and watch the giraffes. First World problems, yes. I feel blessed to (1) be in the same generation and (2) be able to see them in concert. BONUS: I've seen two TMBG concerts with my daughter and we have a date in DC for #3. Poor girl, her first concert was Reel Big Fish and the next was Rush.
Anytime I see this video suggested, I have to watch it ... for how many years now? One of my favorite parts is including the AVClub staff in the video. Lots of faceless people got to be in it. ALways makes me happy.
I've listened to Homer Simpson much more than I should, and, I've actually considered his suggestion, before running for the toilet. Haven't done it, yet. Hey, I live alone.
I love Linnell's crap-eating grin at 1:07. He already knew full well that this was going to be great, and boy was it. Also, is it just me, or is Dan Miller, like, really tall?
All this video needed for perfection was a huge ass brutal moshpit at the end with everyone destroying the room and all of the equipment in it. Pretty close though.
I always felt like if they wanted to sit down and figure this out as more than a lark, they could take this fun performance and knock it out of the park. The bassline is killer and the riff they get in the bridge towards the end is classic TMBG.
Let's not kid ourselves. The reason they chose this song is because the song is fun and they know how to have fun
And so do you!
One might say...
They like fun
true, and shameless lol
I wonder if anyone was kidding themselves…

you sure you didn't get a clone? you never know if they might still have your kid.
I noticed I was smiling during the entire song. This makes me so happy for some reason. Maybe it’s the human spirit captured in a little room.

Do they always have all those people like that.
At 50 I’m still smiling & dancing to TMBG
Thank you for getting me through OH SO MUCH! You guys rock & roll! 🤗 🕊️
Right there w ya. 49 here, and been listening since high school. ✊️
I might have exploded if I was within a kilometre of that room. My body would simply have failed to withstand the energy.
So you've never seen TMBG live? For me five and counting. Get to a show as soon as you are able.
You'd get up again
this performance should be in a museum
its in the museum of my heart
It should be stored in the Palatka City library in Putnam County, Florida.
Nobody ever goes there, it should be safe.
In the museum of idiots, obviously
Has it really been 8 1/2 years since they did this? Jeez, where does the time go?
I just came across this again and thought the exact same thing!

The energy in that room is insane!!!

I think they were joking when they said that, as part of their drive to recruit AV Club employees into volunteering as their backup singers.

They crushed this cover, Flans hit those high notes, and the bassline was amazing
✨Superb✨
There's so much joy in that room.
They MIGHT be giants, but they are DEFINITELY awesome.
tmbg covering chumbawamba , what a time to be alive
Genius, still my favorite band. After hearing flood back in 1990, I was forever a fan of everything these two did.

Yeah that was impressive
It's a very well written song
Never thought I'd see TMBG cover that, well done everyone.
