@@gloriaanngomez3238 To be fair, I said "borderline," and I suppose if it's very clear that it's in a separate "non-inspired" part at the end, kind of like the Apocrypha in some Bibles, it would alleviate most of my concerns.
But although I'm not a liberal, we as conservatives have to reckon with the fact that many of the founding fathers (but not all and maybe not even the majority to be fair, but many nonetheless) didn't even believe in Jesus as the Christ (Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin come to mind, both admired Jesus, but they did not believe he was divine).
I've actually read Ben Franklin's autobiography and yup, any fair reading indicates that at least at the time it was written, Ben Franklin was not a Christian, at least not in any traditional sense of the definition.
The U.S. Constitution was an amazing achievement, but the Bible's light will burn brighter and inspire more people far longer than the Constitution will ever be remembered, and it does seem not right to me to put it together with the Bible, but that's just my opinion.

Great video, I personally love the Thompson Chain. yes, the older ones were very "busy" but the new ones are much improved. I think what I like about the Thompson the most is that if you want to just read the Bible, it is there with no intrusions from super-scrips, sub-scripts, letters, numbers, or symbols, and no fear of the text falling into the gutter. if you find a passage interesting, you can look to the margin and and get references or parallel passages, or even follow the whole chain. the strength of the Thompson is that instead of an authors commentary (which may or may not align with your views), it really only uses scripture as commentary on scripture. Some of this may be nostalgia from when I was young and saw the maps in the back that showed the travels of different people laid out in an easy to understand form.

I just found your channel (from the God Bless the USA Bible review)... To me, the importance of a video like this is that it gives people "permission" to think about what they DO and DO NOT like about whatever Bible they have been exposed to... As a teen, I found it very hard to try to read through the Bible - something my teachers and elders told me that I REALLY needed to do. I had an somewhat old KJV to read from and deciphering the language kept derailing me. I always thought that something was wrong with ME... I grew up during a time that younger followers didn't question what they were taught or told by teachers...
An honest message like this with no JUDGEMENT, only opinions, would have saved me a lot of anguish and might have helped me find what I needed to grow. The message that it is OKAY to know what presentation works and doesn't work for me.

8:15 on your point about the drop caps, I didn’t know what you were talking about until you showed it to which I was like UES!! Me too!! Bc when I got my recent bible (in person) and saw that it had that, I was thrown off! Like they’re pretty, but I never studied the Bible with that so it rubbed me wrong. But when I think about the ways people memorize the Bible by using the first letter of every word in a verse, I’m thinking maybe that’s the usefulness of it? To help with memorization 🤷🏾‍♀️ it’s an idea right😄 Praise the Lord!

Of those you listed, the patriotic Bibles turn me off the most. A lot of our patriotism treads too close to idolatry for my tastes, and patriotic Bibles always send me running.

When I was first saved, I was given a Scofield Bible. After a few years, I set it aside---I did not like when the notes appeared in the middle of verses, and even broke up the middle of a train of thought in the Biblical text. It also probably didn't help when I left dispensationalism by the wayside after studying some in Hebrew and Greek. Nowadays I don't care for any Bible that intrudes upon the text of Scripture, placing notes within the Biblical text. I don't mind little numbers or letters in the text, as long as the comments are moved to the sides or center. I have seen too many people who classify (at least in their minds) the comments as equivalent to the text.

I believe the Scofield Bible in the notes are more like the Baptist beliefs as I used to be Baptist. Now I’m Church of God. It’s Pentecostal but believes in the trinity also as the Baptist did.

I have to admit that I was one of those who placed too much importance on the contents of the notes in the Schofield KJV.
Once I realized that, I immediately purchased a KJV Bible with text only from Church Bible Publishers. Their Bibles can get expensive if you go for a luxury cover but otherwise are very good quality Bibles.

    Good afternoon.
I've watched several of your videos and I found them refreshing. I've been searching for a new Bible and wanted some Pros and Cons from other people.
As far as color, I lean towards a Black color. Yeah, I'm Old School. My first Bible was given to me by my parents. It had a Blue Binding. In 1970, I bought a Black Zondervon Bible. In about 1980 I bought a Brown Thompson Chain Bible. I recently bought a Black Thompson Chain Bible but, I've been looking at the R.L. Allan and the Schuyler Bibles as well. The Allan and Schuyler Bibles are very nice and, the price of them reflects how nice they are.
I really appreciate your honesty on your appraisals of the different Bibles Pros and Cons.
Aside from my preference for the color Black, I also lean towards the KJV.
Thanks for sharing your input and honest thoughts on selecting a Bible for your daily Bible reading.
    Stan

This was so well done. Opinions abound, and people can get really divisive. I think a Bible is a very personal decision for everyone. I enjoy watching when someone reviews a Bible, it allows me to hear the pros and cons.
I have researched several Bibles after seeing a review on them, I think these reviews are more important now that there are fewer book stores where you can actually look at a particular Bible or translation.

I agree with most everything you said. The Trevaris is what threw me off a bit. I had collected quite a few nice bibles from Allan in the past. ESV, NIV and KJV. I then purchased a full sized Canterbury KJV and was blown away at how nice it was. To be honest, my Allan bibles fell a bit short of it. I then bought a personal size Canterbury and it was every bit as nice as the full size. Well, I have been wanting to size up a little bit from my EDC Allan ESV (my eyes are getting old) and was leaning toward the Trevaris. I do like the drop caps in the Canterbury and really enjoy the single column for reading. Should I be looking to something else?

That being said, fancy colored bibles are for teen, young adults and old ladies, like me. I know it's not a man thing, but the publishers listened and are selling💲🛍 a lot of them because of color. It draws in new buyers.
Next, I agree with your comments on the old Thompson Chain Reference. I have a KJV large print by Kirkbride,. I rarely look at it, unless I want to study a specific topic. I do have the new NASB GOAT on order to replace the older version. I bought it because of the redesign. Also, I bought the NASB over the NKJV because of the light tan🐐 goat cover. ( female preferences).
I don't like the 5 Solas either, it makes the spine to busy. I love God's Word , but I don't know the differences in theology, as never went to seminary school. I just study and read what I love.
Lastly, I have one patriots bible, only for the USA historical purposes. I read it one time, then put it away.

I appreciate Bible reviews as I have bought many different translations over the years. Currently the Bible version I am using for my everyday devotions and reading is "The Living Bible". I find I am understanding this translation better.

I think you did a great job with this obviously tough topic for you. I think everyone has bibles the like less or more, as an atheist I don't have much skin in the game, but I do prefer the more modern translations as I feel they hew closer to the original meaning of the authors. Obviously, I don't believe it to be anything than an embellished somewhat historical text, but I recognize its historical and cultural impact. And I must say you are an excellent bible critic, even if you don't view yourself that way.
You are doing great work helping Christians find their right bible. And that seems important to you, so keep doing it.

I totally agree with you about the Schuyler Treveris, Tim! 😊 I really wanted to like the ESV Treveris. I honestly went back and forth, back and forth, for months. Especially because I love, absolutely love, Schuyler Bibles. They are my favorite premium Bible publisher. But in the end, just like you, I don't think I like the ESV Treveris. For example:
    * I don't like that there's a concordance. It would've been better to go with no concordance and increase the thickness of the paper (gsm) so that the Treveris is either a bit more opaque or so that each page in the Treveris is more breathable since the current page seems a bit crowded or dense to me. I like concordances and other helps or aids in study Bibles, not in reader's Bibles.
    * I don't like that the Oxford Hollow in the spine apparently causes a crease at certain angles. But I've heard this isn't really noticeable and also that over time it flattens out and becomes unnoticeable. Still, it's slightly annoying.
    * I don't like that the Jerusalem cross isn't centered after the full yapp becomes trained. It's not something easily noticeable but once you see it it's hard to unsee it - at least for me.
    * I don't like the misprint in Isaiah 12's red drop cap, which says "O" rather than "Y" as in "You". But this should be fixed in the next print run. So it wouldn't be a permanent issue. It's only a problem in the current ESV Treveris editions.
    * I don't like the red drop caps. I mean, I love that there is some color in the text, because a little bit of color is a nice touch and draws me in more than all black and white which leaves a more mundane impression on me. But I don't love the overly ornate red drop caps. The drop caps are way too gaudy or ostentatious. Too florid. Too big and too showy for my tastes. In this case, I wish the Treveris had just left it normal black text. There's already enough color on each page of the Treveris. The red drop caps virtually scream to me, but I tend to prefer quieter aesthetics. I'm also more of a minimalist. If the Treveris was a castle, it'd be more like the Palace of Versailles. However, I prefer a simpler and cleaner but elegant look like the Chateau de Chambord, the Chateau de Chenonceau, the Chateau de Fontainebleu, the Chateau d'Usse, etc.
    * I don't like that they placed the verse numbers off to the side. I get why they did it. It's a kind of hybrid between a reader's Bible and being able to reference a reader's Bible. So the Treveris would work for someone who wants this kind of a hybrid. Such as a Bible study leader or similar who wants a Bible to read along with everyone else as well as a Bible to quickly find verse numbers. But for me, I guess I'm more of a purist when it comes to reader's Bibles. I want to have an enjoyable reading experience first and foremost. The Treveris detracts too much from this for me. Again, just my opinion, but the Treveris seems to want the best of both worlds, but it ends up being less than the best of both worlds. Not saying it's the worst, because there are a lot worse Bibles, just that it's less than the best. But Schuyler normally has such a high standard that the Treveris being less than the best is a bit of a disappointment for me. Again, just speaking for myself.
    * Overall the Treveris seems to strive for an old world aesthetic, a vintage look and feel, something for the gentlemanly sophisticates of yesteryear, but I suppose I'm too new world and modern. I prefer the aesthetics of the Quentel or PSQ in general. Indeed my ideal Bible would be something like a reader's version of the Quentel or PSQ - single column, paragraph, remove the chapter and verse numbers, remove the headings and references, but leave in tact the font, font size, etc. I think that'd make for a wonderful reader's Bible. Or perhaps Schuyler could again partner with Crossway (as they did with the absolutely stunning Heirloom Heritage which I utterly love and prefer to the Treveris) and print a premium version of the ESV Reader's Bible (as RL Allan once did but now it's out of print). But if they do, I hope they will please remove the chapter numbers since, as Mark Ward has said, the ESV Reader's Bible with chapter numbers is like climbing Mt. Everest and making it to like a few feet short of the summit then calling it quits. So close yet so far!

I really loved this video! You did a great job articulating features that you've found that make Bibles "that aren't right for you" -- often figuring out what we don't like about certain Bibles helps us narrow down and focus on the versions best for us.
I'm unsurprised you're not a fan of brightly colored Bibles as I recall you mentioning that bright color not being one you'd personally want to bring to church. I love the look of brightly colored Bibles, but understand why many think they're garish or not somber enough for a daily Bible.
Totally agree with you about the Thompson Chain-Reference Bibles! I've tried to use one before and found myself consistently overwhelmed or distracted. Glad they're around and so popular as many people seem to benefit greatly from them.
It was a kindness to point out publicly that not everyone is looking to purchase a 5 Solas rebind and that rebinders are limiting their potential market when they make them without a particular purchaser in mind. You weren't unkind, didn't mention any companies by name in a negative manner, and if I were a small business owner this is feedback I'd be interested in.
Love the Treveris! There's definitely been Bibles you've pointed out as some of your absolute favs that I wasn't enthused about -- we're so lucky there's such a wonderful diversity of Bibles to choose from in today's market!
I completely agree with you about patriotic Bibles. I'd never been a fan of them as they seemed to be pandering, but you're right: it's really not cool to be mixing our allegiances to God and to our country in a copy of the Scriptures. Sorry, USA, but though I love you, you're coming in second place to God if there's a competition.

I agree with you on everything except the brightly colored Bibles. As an artist and musician I like the idea of rebinding or buying a new Bible that is in your favorite color. I guess it's an Identity thing you know it's your Bible in a pile of other's belongings at the end of church or church event when you bring your Bible with. Like a perse it can be a self expression. I feel like Bibles are personal when you own one you often put your name in the front maybe buy some personalized bookmarks for it why not have one in a color that pleases your eye. Yeah some are gaude looking but eh I'm not against a colored Bible. Humans come in different colors.

However, I did have it with me while teaching a youth class once and it came in clutch as an illustration. Also, I’ve found that it is a FANTASTIC conversation starter. Anything I carry a bible that sparks conversation (something that can’t really be said about other bibles I have,) it is always note worthy to me and I remember to try and carry it frequently. So I agree with your assessment of bright color bibles from a more personal stance, but I also see some place for them that could ultimately be valuable. Great video!

We actually had to make a formal policy to ban flags from the sanctuary.

@@spiceweasel1145Yeah, they say "God and country", "God and country", and have an Ametican flag on one side of the "stage", and a fake "Christian flag" on the other, as if that's going to counterbalance the American flags place of reverence, and make it alright. And it does exactly that: it counterbalances them, making the American flag, and the ersatz "Christian" flag equal. "God and country"...

You are so kind Tim, I doubt that sending this message with love the way you did can be offensive.

Yep! Love you more now. I'm right behind you regarding any nation/philosophy/current trend/etcetera being placed ABOVE God. It will always be God's prerogative to place favor as HE pleases. It is our responsibility to learn God's Word and to apply it in our lives...to serve and love God and to love our neighbor. By the way, I do love colorful Bibles but I, too, tend to own mostly black, brown, tan covered Bibles. 😅

The only one I really disagree with is the 5 solas. I get so excited when I see that on a rebind! But, I’m reformed, so that makes sense.
