I'm not (yet) running an Etsy shop, but have personal experience with people weaponizing chargebacks, disputes, and refunds against me. This is definitely a scammer who knows how to play the system. They either get free merchandise or refunds on money they never actually spent. I would reply to ANY order that matches these others (name, address, purchase) with a very diplomatic apology that Etsy has told you the address is involved in an investigation and you are not allowed to accept orders for that address.

SCAMMERS are SO LOW, I had one last year on FB, “I used to sell on face book market place, “I only put one pair of lovely shoes on there, I got a message from this lady saying she liked them, so I said I only accept PayPal, “So I thought that would be ok, She got really nasty after me giving my email address, “Saying she wanted me o send her a load of money, I was confused, She was saying stuff to me as if I was the buyer and she was the seller, Said she she would put a virus on my account also told me I had to click on this link in the email, or so many things would happen in my life, I deleted everything and Blocked Her, I Hope Sallie you Get This Sorted Out ❤ All the Best, BlessYou xx😢

Not all scams are scams. Sometimes its your competition. I've had friends with shops that were selling in the $1000 price range per item and had a guy order and then flag the order while it was in progress just to have the store shut down or assets frozen. Months later another shop propped up selling the same item for even higher prices since they have no competition.

I've seen something like this personally, but very different compared to her issue. I was selling feeder insects on eBay and my direct competitor kept reporting me for FDA violations (I didn't know anything about the FDA or that I was doing anything wrong at the time). Everytime I got removed, he raised all of his prices. Eventually I got an email from the FDA stating I was compliant after talking to them on the phone (I didn't do anything but get an email from them saying I was o.k. and cleared by the FDA as not being in voilation with any U.S. Laws or regulations.) I gave this to the eBay and I finally returned the favor by reporting him as non-compliant for the first time after he had reported me 4 times previously. (It took me getting removed 4 times before I took notice to the pattern and realized it was him. (He had posted a message in his listing stating he was the only person on eBay that was FDA compliant, so he probably got others kicked off beyond just me.) It took him 3 months to get back on eBay. I hate people like that.

Hope nothing but karma comes back to those type of people. If they think taking away someones bread and butter is going to make them a profit than they are wrong. They will lose twice as much money in the long run through their health issues and unforseen circumstances that will make their own shops suffer. Healthy competition is normal but doing something shady as such is wrong on every level.

Sounds to me like this is on Etsy. If all of the accounts are shipping to the same address; Etsy is being "willfully blind" to the fraud and not taking "reasonable steps" to address the issues with something simple, such as a warning when multiple accounts are ordering items to be shipped to the same common address.

After like the 7th order I finally cussed the guy out and told him I knew he was a scammer and that I reported him to the FBI Cyber Crimes division with the TX address that was being used repeatedly. Scammers are getting more and more clever. Like the guy who went from store to store taking blank gift cards and replacing them with his perfectly copied gift cards. When someone picked one up and purchased it and added money to it, bamm he would use the numbers he had already copied down to go online and buy things. The person who purchased the gift card got a big surprise when they tried to use it and there was a 0 balance. Luckily he's in jail.

I've seen other reports of this scam, and it seems to be fairly common. Some of the scammers have been arrested, but many others have not. There's a move to require sellers to keep giftcards behind the counter for protection, but so far it isn't happening. I'd be very wary of giftcards until they put some protections in place.

Occasionally you see a massive flood of identical orders with different payment methods and the same delivery address. The goal is to see if the transaction proceeds which confirms the stolen credentials.

A way scammers can get a login info is from compromised accounts on other platforms. Scammers buy lists of emails/passwords and then have programs that test the logins from different sites. So many folks use same password everywhere, so it makes it easy to get hacked unfortunately..

  • @lynn6799

This kind of reminds me of scammers who try to get the cashier tripped up by asking you to break up multiple bills consecutively. The whole point is to make the cashier miscount the change being given so the scammer walks away with extra cash. I've seen that before and had one show up years ago. He failed that time.
The other thing is probably trying to bankrupt and shut down your shop by getting you to send out product while never getting paid for it or getting the product returned. If all the accounts are shipping to the same name and address, I'd suggest filing a police report against that person and address too.

This is random but I recently learned about a scam going on with Amazon.
Never give your phone number to the Amazon delivery people because there’s a loophole that allows the Amazon employee to access your entire account with your phone number and and some have been caught getting into customers’ accounts placing the item as a return and keeping the item for themselves and the customer won’t get their money back because obviously the package was never returned.
I’m not sure if they fixed this issue or not but it sucks that this is happening as well.

I am so sorry this is happening to you, I would put your shop on a brief vacation until Etsy resolves this. Is there a way to block future orders for specific orders that have suspicious activity? If not maybe we need to push for this. It almost seems like these scammers are trying to knock out competition somehow to get you suspended.

Can't you block this acct/buyer so they can't order anymore? I understand that if they keep changing emails, you can't possibly know it's the same person. I actually did have something kind of similar just happen yesterday. I opened a 2nd Esty shop and right after I listed my first item I got a message from someone wanting to buy it. So I told them to place the order but then they said they needed my email, which I've never been asked for, but I had just set up the shop & they also sent a screen shot showing they were being asked for it. Now I have only had my 1st shop for a year so not that long. It seemed weird but I did the wrong thing & gave them my email. They sent another message saying they had just ordered it & to check my email. That's when I knew it was a scam. I reported the messages & the emails. when I looked at that buyer acct they didn't actually have an Etsy acct. Here is the important thing though- I was then sent another message that looked like it was "from Etsy" and another email "from Etsy" that said my acct had been suspended due to an issue with a pending order. When I clicked through on that email (which you should never do) it showed my dashboard with these issues!! It said it needed to confirm my credit card & bank info and then of course I knew. So I logged out & back in on a different device and my account was fine. There were no messages from Etsy. Sorry this is so long but it was scary for a moment because they showed me my own dashboard with the "account suspended". So please sellers, double check before giving anyone any info. Geez! I blocked that email & account and everything has been fine. But it was like they were waiting for brand new shop listings to swoop in there & scam the newbies. I don't know how they knew but they were definitely next level! TY for sharing your story!

I am getting something similar on eBay, lots of orders from the same person, all going to one address in Mexico. They will order the same item every couple of days, paying expensive shipping. Instead of ordering all together under one shipping fee. I can almost guarantee they will be looking to do chargebacks. I am not sending to that address and they will be getting refunded, eBay have been notified but do not seem too bothered. After some research it is near impossible to get proof of a delivery in Mexico, so eBay are almost guaranteed to give them the money back. If you are unsure send the customer a message to see how they respond. The person I am dealing with ignores messages, which is another redflag.

If the scammer can get you not to exactly follow ebays return rules or you mess up then ebay and paypal will stick you with the bill. After ebay burnt me one time I stopped using their platform. The ebay user that burnt me even had their account on-hold and was soon removed from the platform for scamming but ebay nor Paypal cared and would never refund my money which was upwards of $2,000 USD. Ummmmm..... Just my 3¢... BUT two things that I take issue with in regards to Etsy... The big one is shop owners having to send an email for support and having to wait days to get a reply from them!!.. not to mention that the response is No help or give ease of mind to the shop owner.
It's fair to also guess that the chat option is probably not an actual person either..
But then the second thing is in regards to things Etsy says to keep your accounts secure... " Know who your talking to!!"
Well if they don't show you any information about who you are talking to or dealing with, or don't give you any of this information ounce you report a problem... How do they actually expect anyone to "Know" who they are talking too?!?!
I have bought plenty of stuff off Etsy and it has Always been a good experience!! But have seen and heard too many stories of issue and problems had my shop owners that are crazy and handled poorly by Etsy... I can't see why anyone thinks the are a smart and viable option anymore?!?!

On another site, I saw a woman share a similar story, but it was for digital content on a different platform. All of a sudden, she started receiving many chargebacks within a day or so from new subscribers. She was willingly to give full refunds to anyone who simply asked. Month after month the problem continued driving income to near zero or negative. Eventually, her bank and credit card provider cancelled her accounts. Perhaps this activity flagged her as a scammer in the system. She's been asking law enforcement to help investigate because her platform won't.
Per industry experts, at least half of chargeback fraud is done by customers. Your situation doesn't seem to fit. Here are a couple possibilities: Companies in the same space have used very dirty tactics to try knocking out their competition. Etsy has been at war with pirated firms. Perhaps this is part of a larger retaliation by them or by hackers. It is mind blowing how many demonically possessed are out there.

Hum. Were the orders credit card orders? If so, I'm thinking they could place orders with no cash in the account (because it's credit), but when they ask for a refund you'd be putting money into the account -- and that's the scam. Money from nothing. Then they can do a cash withdrawal before the bank catches up. Not sure that would work, but I'm going to stick with it. Getting the credit cards in the first place would have been a scam too. Probably bought hacked info on a person with a good credit score, applied for a bunch of cards and got them...then you know how the rest of the scam works. Buy a lot of stuff, ask for a bunch of refunds...and money appears.

I have a newer print on demand shop with only a few sales. On two occasions I have gotten very official looking messages claiming to be Etsy support or Etsy help. Both messages claim that my shop was disabled to my email not being verified. Then it asked for my email. I almost took the bait because I’m new and it looked official. However I read the official Etsy scam help section and realised that it was a scam. I reported both times. Don’t fall for it! Good luck to all other Etsy sellers 🙏
