I am still internet sleuthing but so far I have found an obituary for Charles Marshall III who had a sister named, Gay Marshall of Marion, Ohio. Parents were Charles W., II and Frances Miriam, née Yeoman. With a sister named, Carolyn Marshall which matches who bought and cut the Wild Horses Skinner print.
@@KathleenIllustrated Of course, this is my JAM! I think I am hitting dead ends from here but at least we know Charles was her brother and she was still alive at the time of his death in 2014. You should be able to google his name and find the obituary.
Kathleen. This is my new Roman Empire; i will never stop thinking about this absolute find of a CENTURY. You won!!! You won the game I’m so speechless.
As a fantasy artist myself, with no immediate family and unpublished, I wonder if one day my own stash of sketchbooks and works will be puzzled over like this. It makes me strangely sad, but also happy that eventually my art will find their person. I am certain this artist would have been moved that someone liked their work so much.
This was such a gem of a video, Im so glad Gay's work ended up with someone who would appreciate it. Those bug gazelle giraffes and their hunters had such an '8 year old draws anime' vibe with the extremely pointed but almost nonexistant nose and the huge eyes, I wonder if Gay came across any 80s anime and took inspiration or if it's a weird coincidence?
I beg you to scan these somehow to have them be available on the internet, even better if you can find the original artist/their family and sell the digital prints with them receiving a large portion of the funds. Like half of these would be so cute in a nursery or a playroom or... in my room!
I highly recommend seeing if there is a local historical society where you bought the portfolio! They generally tend to get a lot of information about local artists like this, and may have a lot more information that can't be found online since most historical societies aren't able to digitize and publish their collections due to lack of budget or stafffing.
I was born and grew up in Marion, so I can confirm there is a historical society. Marion, also being the birthplace and burial spot of U.S. President Harding, loves it's history.
I am originally from Marion, OH, so this is so cool. There is a Historical Society located near downtown Marion in the old post office, but you could also try the Marion Public Library to see if they have anything about Gay Marshall.
Ok so I'm not 100%, but I think I had one of her drawings as a kid. I had a print of a colored pencil drawing of a cat with rainbow feathered wings that I got at a sci-fi convention in the early 90s in either Rye, NY or Philadelphia. The style was remarkably similar to those cats with butterfly wings, and I do remember it being a female artist at the table, but since I don't have the print anymore, I can't say for sure if it was her or not
So glad this portfolio ended up in your hands and you decided to share it with us. The artwork couldn't have found a more appreciative and loving home 💜
count me as a new Gay Marshall fan. goodness, Kathleen you really found something amazing. hoping we find out more about her and her art. thank you for sharing this!
This is so rad! I love finding original art at the thrift store and this is that times like, a million. There's a couple people in the comments talking about finishing that 4 generations piece, which I think would be really cool... but I would scan or photograph it and finish a copy, rather than the original. It would also be cool to scan or photograph one of the sketches and finish those! Regardless, amazing find, treasure it forever.
Gay Marshall is probably the late Gay Marshall, born 1944, passed in 2015. I could only find two in Ohio, and the other one is a theater actress who makes no mention of an artistic hobby and may be a little young for the 70s and 80s art shown here. I love this art so much. If you decide to sell any of those prints at any time please let us know lol.
Thank you for this holiday gift of a video! The very idea of an intergenerational painting is blowing my mind. So glad that Gay's work ended up in the hands of someone who appreciates it.
You would really love a podcast called Endless Thread on WBUR and the episode where they uncover the mystery of what artist did the “A Wrinkle in Time” book cover. It is such a fascinating look into how we generally don’t know the artists of these sci if book covers. Full episode name is “artist: known - illustrator for a wrinkle in time gets long-overdue credit” This episode is amazing, what a great treasure!! 🎉
The unfinished piece reminds me of a chapter in Huckleberry Finn where he visits a family who has an unfinished piece on display that the late daughter had left unfinished. In that one, there were three pairs of arms, doing different things, lightly sketched in, because she hadn’t decided which to do.
If you do hang any of the artwork, don't forget to use the glass that minimizes sun damage! We want those babies to exist as long as possible. The butterfly cats must be protected!!!
Give Sunrise Publications / Greetings in Bloomington, Indiana a call and see if Gay was one of the artists they worked with. I worked there in the 80’s and this style was huge.
Get the Finding Vivian Maier outta here! So cool. I think YOU should be the one to finish the painting if the artist is no longer living. You’ve kept it alive and brought it new life.
So fun! I love the idea of rescuing art. I bought a random sketch years ago out of a pile of work. Wish now I could have afforded to buy the whole stack. Turns out she (Barbara Remington) was an illustrator and had done cover art for certain editions of The Lord of the Rings.
The unfinished one is really interesting. Its sad that its unfinished but also really beautiful on its own. I think the flower one is really amazing. The fantasy scenes are also really cool. They make me wonder about the universe/story that goes along with them.
Kathleen: This is the best thing I've watched lately! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time! I guessed the price you paid at $500.00 and I was thinking you really scored!! WoW!! Such TREASURES from the Mind of a Brilliant Mad Woman, as you say! Thank you for sharing!!
Why didn’t I watch this when it came out? I love animals in elaborate historical fashion! Animal cartoons were always my favorite. 6:28 That celestial six fairy winged binicorn is a design I’ll be incorporating in my pixiecorn characters. They fly with pixie dust or psychic levitation but wings are just cool! 13:04 My phone lock screen is a rainbow butterfly unicorn kitten my mom found on Facebook. 12:50 Those bears would be so cool in a colored picture book! 12:07 This hoofed green bug is giving regal Spderus human face and Holly’s boots from miss spider’s sunnypatch friends. This video is making my fantasy writer Brain excited! This is going in my Cool Things To Make playlist!
Thank you so much for this! Gay is my hero! I need the scratchboard hydra!! Iconic!!!!!!!!!! The 4 generation painting! Omfg! Im in love! $44?!?! A steal!!!!!!! This ladys mind was a masterpiece and definitely brought my inner child back to life as you said! Kittens and butterfly wings... Lisa Frank who?! I'm so happy you won the auction and shared this!!! 🥳
Loved this. Thank you for saving this artists work. Totally blown away with the one that many generations of the same family worked on! Super fun, and happy merry everything!
You scored girl. All of this is right up my alley. I love the unfinished piece. And I’ve always been into fairies, unicorns and all things mythical. What a treat to watch you discover the art in this portfolio.
I really love the idea of a four-generation canvas, finished/unfinished. (Sometimes unfinished IS finished, y'know?) My grandfather, father, and brothers were all artsy people, all painters - with wildly different styles and sensibilities - so they could have done that, if they'd thought about it. (They didn't think about it.)
Thw butterfly kitties are SO CUTE. They would make such a wonderful embroidery pattern. Any chance you could scan them and share??? They could go on literally anything and be perfect
Yes! Definitely getting Last Unicorn vibes! I am also reminded of that series of books with the big-eyed fantasy creatures…one of the titles was “Serendipity,” and I think the line of books may have been called “Serendipity books.” This art feels so reminiscent of the illustrations from them.
Ooh, super rad! as far as tracking down more info about the artist, a sci-fi convention I used to go to, always had an art show, usually with a historical gallery section. The con is Boskone in Boston, and it's run by the New England Science Fiction Association, NESFA. I wonder if they'd be able/eager to help you track down info? There's probably a more local option, but that sprung to mind as SOON as you revealed the first piece.
What a find! And the Scratchboard is my vote for best piece, cause of the Hydra! But kitty with butterfly wings is great too. My dream is to find one of these with comic art...
I'm so happy I took the time to watch this, it was such a whimsical journey that made my inner crazy cat lady so happy. And I'm positive this artist would be so happy to have someone who gushes over their works like you have to be in possession of this portfolio!
WOW this collection is absolutely incredible! And I can't believe how much you paid for it...I thought you were going to say a few hundred!! The silk print was SO beautiful!! But I particularly love the fantasy ones xx
I love this. Reminds me of the work my granddad left behind from when he used to draw signage/lettering and illustrate marketing materials for different companies. All by hand. ❤
This was such a great little holiday gift! As both an artist and curator/historian, this could not be more down my alley. Thank you for sharing! I can’t imagine a life where I didn’t see that amazing little alien horse creature. Also the price!?!? I’m gagged
I am obsessed with this portfolio, I am obsessed with Gay Marshall's artwork. I would tag myself as the Wolf head of the hydra and I kind of love those weird long-necked creatures. Thank you for this absolute holiday treat of a video. ALSO: I guessed 40 bucks for the lot and I'm chuffed that I was so close 😆
This was one of the best videos you have ever made. I happily noshed on my crudite plate watching this on Christmas eve. Thank you for all of your work
Amazing finds!!!! Love all the art you found and DEF worth the price! Hope you can find out more about Gay, or maybe hunt down some of their greeting cards
This is amazing!! Gah! I love it so much. The history, the depth, the humanity. I thought the price was going to be at least $75. You got a great deal imo!
Beautiful work I was so lucky to inherit my mums portfolio that she put together in the late 40s. I treasure it more than anything, her talent was remarkable. These kind of treasure is better than anything else ever ever

Which one is your favorite?! I'm partial to the Unfinished Painting & the Hydra Scratchboard myself!
Hydra scratchboard! Amazing detail
I can’t decide between the borrower-like one and the many legged gazelle-ish creatures with riders. They’re all amazing!
hydra scratch board was pretty good but it may be edged out by the "white native American" piece
Butterfly Kitten
definitely the unfinished canvas and the silk piece!
“Is anyone still watching?” ARE YOU KIDDING?!?! I’M RIVETED! I’M JELLY! I’M GOBSMACKED!

There is an article in the Marion Star on June 20 1982 (pg24) about Gay Marshall (with photo).
Is there a way you can link to the article? Google search didn't pull it up
okay but the butterfly kitten would be a cute tattoo actually 👀 the whimsy !!
the Hydra Scratchboard was stunning!!! 44$ is a steal just for that original work in my eyes.
right! i was expecting easily $150 for the portfolio as a whole, let alone that piece
This is officially the best vintage find that has ever been. Congrats
