Strongly felt that comment about cold places and finger joints. I play the violin and every time I'm like "nah, it's just a few minutes outside, I'll skip the gloves, it'll be fine" the hand that can't go into my pocket lets me know that it is in fact not fine the moment I take the violin out

Same! I have a friend who is a warm yoga teacher and she showed me this one day. It was a cold, miserable February day and I was telling her how nervous I was to try her class. She reassured me that even for her, when she is cold her flexibility was nearly as bad as mine. When I went to her class, I completely understood. The difference was night and day.

Yeah, I felt that, too. I have my grandma's and dad's tendency to have so-so circulation in the extremities (hooray for genetics), so my hands get cold and stiff very easily. I cope with mugs of hot tea and knitting myself mitts to keep my hands warm.

If you both/all share the love of crafting or any kind of hobby, even better! You don’t realize how much you've missed and needed that time with friends until you are with them. Treat yourself! The rewards are incredible.

I'm in an embroidery guild (fancy pants name for a sewing circle lol) and just being with other people doing a thing we enjoy is so much better than always doing it alone. I always feel rejuvenated afterwards. Since I couldn't go home for Christmas we did a "lockdown style" video call taking one another into the kitchen while making dinner and just hanging out through our laptops for an evening.

Marlee has probably already figured this out but when working with gold leaf you need to use a brush. There are specific brushes for gold leafing but I just use a big fluffy makeup fan brush. You either brush it alone your jaw or against the hair on your arm to create static electricity then it picks up the gold leaf you gently put it down on whatever you're leaving and then you blow on it and it will adhere to the fixative. Once it has it here to the fixative you can then either hold the brush about a centimeter above the gold leaf and just wave it creating air flow that will help it stick down or you can use the brush and gently brush the top of the gold leaf settling it into the fixative and pattern of what you're leafing. Be extremely careful to get no glue or fixative on your brush. Also the oil on your hands will make the gold leaf stick to you no matter how much you wash them or how clean they are it will still stick to your skin you can wear white gloves and that will help with the sticking.

Using a gilders tip on imitation gold leaf does not work. The gold is too heavy and thick. Yes, you can wear cotton gloves or latex gloves. Marlee is also using the wrong kind of adhesive. For imitation gold (which is what she has) you need to use either a water based gold size or an oil based size. NOT craft glue or anything else. Aqua Size (Wundasize) or Dux are best. Once the gold has come to tack (read the instructions) you can place the gold and then tamp it down with a soft brush. Leave it to dry and then brush off any excess. Keep in mind that imitation gold is made with a high copper content and will tarnish over time if you don't seal it with a clear coat. Virtually any sealer with deepen the colour. Shellac works well. Real gold would have worked better on Marlee's mesh as it's much much thinner and turns basically to dust. Imitation gold is like tinfoil thickness by comparison and will tear rather than conform to the mesh.
REAL gold leaf is an entirely different animal and much more difficult to work with. This is when you use a gilders tip and static, or a tiny amount of vaseline on your arm, to pick up the gold. Oil based size is best for real gold.

Weaver here. Anything that holds warp threads at tension is a loom, whether that's 3 tablet cards or a 40-shaft Dobby loom. This means that gadgets that do not hold warp threads at tension are not looms, e.g. knitting "looms" and rainbow "looms." Tablet weaving is rather ingenious. You change the shed by simply rotating the cards. I've seen many highly intricate and beautiful trims made with tablet weaving, and you've reminded me that I have long wanted to try it myself. That cottage and village looked like pure heaven to me.

    • @tls8688

Also a weaver here. Tablet weaving has more smoother results and the weft more consistent when a shuttle is used to pack the weft thread in, than trying to pack it in with a finger. Even when using only three cards or tablets. Imagine trying to learn all of these skills in the days of yore without the benefit of the internet. Bernadette, that retreat cottage looked amazing.

  • @SilverDragonJay

I like how the thesis of this video is essentially "hey, guys, have you heard of this thing called 'weekends?'"
Seriously though, in a less formal setting (such as self-employment or school in my experience) it can be really hard to justify taking a few days off. I had to rediscover the benefit of weekends during university, because more often then not, I just kept working through the weekend on my assignments and ended up so burned out that I genuinely contemplated dropping out (very rarely, worse things). It wasn't until I forced myself to put my work down and take some time off every week that I managed to regain my energy. The real kicker was how, despite doing that, I was still able to meet my deadlines. Now I have a nice job where, not only do I have a work environment that is completely separate from my personal one, but I am expected to be unreachable on the weekend.
Its very nice. I hope that everyone who is self-employed, or works from home, or whatever is able to find time to set your work aside without feeling guilty about it. Everyone needs a break. Everyone needs time to rest. It is actually beneficial to your work to do so, for we are not machines capable of working without rest. Hell, when you look at productivity world-wide, lower productivity seems to correlate more with intense work cultures that demand long hours and few breaks. Take breaks, please, and try not to feel guilty about doing so.

I'm very glad that I learned this lesson early (courtesy of my first boss, actually) because it helped tremendeously with time managment during the PhD. The same goes for learning btw - if you struggle with retaining something new, it often helps to let it be, get a good night's sleep and often things will much more sense the next day.
But also, chronic illness really ruins that theory quite often.

William Wordsworth did a lot of his good work while living in a cottage in the English countryside - but crucially his life was enabled by his also quite talented sister. So handcrafts like this are themselves labor intensive, but they also require labor to get to the point where the crafting itself is possible; therefore anything handcrafted like this is more valuable than we might give it credit for

Bernadette, your friend doing the gold work, you need to allow the size to dry and to handle the gold leaf , rub a paint brush on your face and the oil from the skin will lift the gold and you then just manipulate it with the brush. I know it's too late for the piece you have been doing on the retreat but i hope this helps for next time. Thank-you all for a lovely video. ❤

I literally JUST watched Morgan's hem weaving video the other day since I've been on a weaving kick the last few weeks and as soon as you brought out the shift I thought 'oh that would be a perfect application of the hem weaving I just learned' and then you pulled up her video and I had a lovely little reminder of how friendly and supportive everyone in this historical crafting community is to each other!!

Oh the buttons! That brought me back! My Grandmother was a lace maker (not sure about the translation- with a pillow, lots of needles and the wooden spule-thingies) but my attention span as a kid was way to short for that so we made buttons together like these! We used wooden buttons too, but mostly wooden or metal rings. You have to weave very tightly and it feels solid, when you do it right! Also she taught me to do „knot“ buttons and the counter part- specially twisted cords form a rose or fleur de lis and get stiched on the garment - it looks absolutly regal! Have to try and re-learn this! Thank you❤

Btw most teas arent meant to have (hot) water flushed over it as it flushes out the tannins first which in turns makes it more bitter but rather filling the cup and adding the tea after or just pouring beside the tea leaves; this makes varying amoutns of difference from none to tremendous depending on the tea. Well most people dont even know not every tea is supposed to be done with boiling water either so ye

I’m in a craft group and we met together twice a year for a weekend to craft. It’s 5 ladies in there 50’s and 3 (including me) in our 20’s. It’s honestly so much fun. We go out for dinner and then spend the rest of it teaching eachother crafts. The next craft day two of the ladies are teaching us how to make a quilt! It’s so fun to learn other skills and to see everyone’s skills. We all learn to make the same thing but everyone’s always look so different and unique to them.
