Probably add a smaller winch just to use to drag the heavier cable to (via snatch block) whatever you're going to winch out, and then back to the anchor point of the blade so you don't end up trying to drag some several hundred kilos of winch cable against the drag of the winch itself. Don't have the bar armor on a flat or vertical, angle the bars at a 45 so if something does break and fly back if it hit the bars it would be directed down and away since its easier to redirect force than try to stop it. Also wedge shield the radiator grill. More lights can't hurt if you're going to do a night or recovery that takes you into the evening/night time hours. Elevated tool/equipment box on the back to carry your chains, pull harnesses, chains, straps, snatch blocks, hooks, eye swivels, pins, cribbing. Tow bars can be mounted into hangers along the arms of the blade.
Don't think you'll need the fairlead to be out on a stawk, forward, like the sparks deal - length issues of whole contraption. Maybe on an A-frame above winch - depending on transport height.
Immense! Only observation is perhaps incorporate some anchor points into the blade while it’s with the fabricators so you can attach the winch cable back to something solid when using a snatch block
Or even an attachment point for an extra snatch block on the blade for an extra return. With the total mass of the vehicle and that blade anchor they may as well make that 35T winch pull a tectonic plate or two!
Hi Mr Hewes, Kindly remember to also change the glass out on the D9 to 1/4" or 6.5mm plexiglass. can take a stronger impact than a lot of the old glass in the used vehicles
Wow I dint Realize you APC was Called Fallen Riflemen you don't know How True that Is For Me I Was A rifleman And We Were Mech Infantry and I lost many Mates During my Time in the Army I Still Hold Them Dear In My Heart Nice you Have Put that on the APC Thank You From Us all

one thing to look at: if you mount the winch on top of the blade, obviously all the pulling force will have to be taken up by the struts/piston that connect to the top of the blade. on the video i could not see very well the bolt that connects these struts to the push bar, but that seems to be the weak point. and of course if you use the wich with a (bloody heavy) pulley forces will be doubled......might be wise to connect the return cable to the bottom of the blade, not the top.
Get you there ...get it as low as possible.. I imagine that some of the pulling force load will be taken up by the blade being anchored into the ground during winching operations . Depending on ground
With the blade acting as the anchor all the force is taken by the blade against the winch - there is a similar set up on a skid steer on "watch wes work" if his works using a blade anchor I doubt that that Cat blade will have any problems
I would consider mounting the winch lower on the back side of the blade, then have it come out the top through a horse head/swivel. This is how our winchbox is setup. Keeps the pressure even across the blade as well (less pressure just on just the top). Winchboxes work best when they can force the blade deeper into the ground, so it gets a better bite, so you want to be able to angle it down a bit as well. Excited to see this one built out!
When you think the Americans can do something massive, some cocky guy from England says "Hold my Tea" and proceeds to outdo the AMERICANS! thats badass engineering!
We’ve (I say “we’ve” but in my entire 37 years on this planet I’ve engineered nothing” got a bit of a history of it. Not cos we’re geniuses or owt, but because it rains a lot and we spend a lot of time in our sheds making stuff :) :)
Here's my 10 bob's worth, I use to own a Bedford RL recovery unit and it had a winch mounted up in-between the chassis and the cable could be fed out the back and through a multidirectional pulley wheel OR under the vehicle via a couple of 'followers' and out the front. So with the D9 in mind, I would mount the winch on the back with a large pulley wheel and with the mother of all fairleads set into a recess in the area of the lower-middle part of the front blade and covered with removable thick steel plate so that the fairleads do get jammed up with crap or damaged when using the blade in the conventional way. Re the risk of snapping cables and shackles, fabricate some plate steel (angled downwards to the ground) around the back of the winch to protect the driver and the bulldozer, and get yourself a roll of metre wide plus of used rubber conveyor belt (bastard to cut but it has a 101 uses) and carry a few 2 to 3 metre lengths to drape over the cable when under load so as to act dampers in the event of breakage. You could also fabricate some form of removable derrick that can be connected to the front blade (like the example on skid steer in the video). The benefits of this suggestion would be; the option of front or rear winch pulls, better visibility over the front blade, less risk of damaging the front area of the bulldozer, better weight distribution across the wheel/track base of the dozer, easier access to the winch (due to it being lower) for operation and maintenance.
I applaud the use of Frankie Goes to Hollywood! When you get that tugger glued to the pusher, maybe a little Stereo MC "Connected" might be a good score? Jack can stand in for Stereo MC.
It will be a unique bit of kit. Not exactly easy to move around on the roads but can go anywhere in the countryside where a tank or any other kind of vehicle Jack (or Whistlindeisel) has got stuck somewhere. Patent the idea then sell it to the military for their armoured recovery vehicles? Make a mint, possibly even a packet of Polos. Bravo.
I’ve seen winches on bulldozers, but usually mounted to the rear. Who knows, maybe it will herald a new era of dozer mounted winch innovation. Get a patent out worldwide immediately!
ahh, 1984, good year, had an XR3 with a cassette player, found a good bird, frankie was banging away at full volume in my XR3, along with that bird... yeah, grandad now with said bird, but the legs aren't up to kicking the indicator stalk clean off 3 times...
DAMN BOY HE THICK THATS A THICK ASS BOY Very excited for this build, it’s going to be awesome. Some boxes on the back for equipment and cribbing would be pretty useful!
Bloody great project. Will be an awesome addition to the recovery arsenal. Be fun to see when this gets deeply mired in the much. Oh yeah going to be a fun one. Great to see Ted and Chisel Head on top of the work. Thank you, Cheers lads.
Nice, I used have a fleet of 25 and 35 ton Shantui dozers - which are Komatsu clones - this video gave me flashbacks to wrestling with idlers, bellypans, tracks and ram seals in the mud and dirt. Happy times
Heavey plate with attachments weldedon blade for rigging snatch blocks pulleys and consider putting a set of fold down spikes at the front of the blade. For more grip in the dirt than the weight of the dozer. Weld on taller grousers to the tracks for even more grip in the dirt. Take dunnage for crossimg roads and sensitive areas. Use the dump truck to pull the trailer with winch dozer with Foden. Nice group of capable machines and men to go get what ever out of the hedge row paddok etc. Also consider putting hard attachments where the hydraulic tilt cylinders on the blade. Rigid attachment for better pulling. Great idea. See where it gets ya
I seriously doubt you are going to use anything but a tri-axle road tractor and a RGN Lowboy trailer to haul that D9G anywhere on a public road because Cat say a D9G weighs in at 108,000 pounds (48,988 kg) and the blade is 14 feet 7 inches (4.5M) wide and 13 feet (4.0m) tall. I don’t know what weight, height and weight restrictions/regulations are across the pond but in the US that load requires oversized vehicles permits to transport one and depending on the state the blade and arms will need to be removed for transport and a tri or quad rear axle road tractor and RGN Lowboy or beam trailer tri-axle trailer or a trailer with a stinger are going to be needed to legally transport it and you may need a pilot car as well.
Long-track D9G: the Old-School giant. After this - starting with the D10 - Cat went to the high drive axle design. Honestly, it was a great innovation, because it takes the drive axle off the ground and saves it from a lot of stress and wear. But there's still something special about the old D9. There was a 'hidden' abandoned D9 in Farming Simulator (2017 I think) that you could find and acquire for your farm.
Ted supervision as ever second to none with his deputy Chisel Head did really well with these side quests and main quest. That looked like a monster to move and adjust well done team

Glad to see Ted keeping an eye on you lot 😆👌 I’d be tempted to add the winch low down (I’d guess the blade is mounted for more strength there) and have a roller at the top to help “lift” stuck gear as you pull. Plenty of points to put snatch blocks and as someone said, possibly a smaller winch to pull the main out
D9 one of the best bits of kit. Dozer and Box. It’s amazing who much they can do in a day. With a good operator on it. Just the sound of the engine is sweet
