He stopped the Bills to a punt once though. I get it though. If you do manage to stop the guy at the 50, then it's not that much worse than a touchback at the 25.

I believe he figured if he don't get the kick maybe he holds them to fg and down 13 and game within two scores. 7% for on sides kick and lions couldn't stop bills regardless
Campbell is considered to be some kind of genius by a lot of people, but IMO, his "aggressive" decisions often end up backfiring and costing the team games. I dont recall the exact plays, but I recall some of his calls really hurting the Lions in the playoffs last year. And I wont say "I told you so", but this game (much more of a domination by the Bills than the final score indicated) shows the Achilles heel of Goff. As I have mentioned, his lack of mobility is a serious handicap compared to Mahomes, Jackson, or Allen. Allen's running for yardage and amazing throws on the run clearly added another dimension that Goff lacks. Goff's accuracy was also not very good at times in this game, and the offensive line and running game did not help out either. Really, I dont see how the Lions in their current state can be considered serious SB contenders. With all the devastating injuries on defense, and now some on offense, I think they are in deep trouble in the playoffs and could even be eliminated in the first round if they don't get a bye.
Non-lions fans won't understand this, but our defense is DEAD. We had a higher chance of winning the on-side kick than getting a stop on defense. But armchair coaches in this comment section will call the guy an idiot.
On the first onside kick the Lions had just scored a touchdown bringing them within 10 points. 38 - 28. 12 minutes left. On the previous Bills possession the Lions defense held the Bills to a field goal. Of the twelve Bills possessions it was in the top three of Lions defensive performances of the game. There was a spark. Calling for an onside kick was, in essence, saying I don't trust my defense.
On top of that, the bills were moving the ball on the Lions all game long, with this kick they only were gonna give the bills The ball with about 20 extra yards. So Dan Campbell decided between 20 yards and having another possession potentially making the game much closer. this is genius. It just didn’t work out.
Dan Campbell is aggressive no doubt. When it works he looks like a genius and when it fails? Yeah not so smart. His aggressiveness basically cost the Lions the NFC title game last year. I wonder if he loses in the playoffs again due to decision making what the narrative on him will be moving forward.
Not really, if you blame the aggressiveness solely on the coaching you weren’t watching that game. They’re were dropped passes, fumble, defensive not stopping SF. So many factors.
@haydenmalesky2518 Things happen in a game. No team plays perfectly. The bottom line is ...if he had kicked field goals and gotten points instead of going for it and gotten nothing ...would the Lions likely have won that game. Answer is yes. Few people debate that point
@@davidhaddock1048 Field goals aren’t guaranteed either, especially when you have a kicker that you aren’t confident in. They were more successful going for it on 4th down than Badgley was at making the kick from where they were at on the field. Now they have Bates who has proven himself.

No, I wouldn't have called him a genius. I would have called him an over-aggressive decision maker who clearly made the wrong call but got unbelievably lucky.
Just a dumb decision, whether it worked or not there’s no reason to take this risk with 12:00 on the clock. Bills offense was unstoppable but I would roll the dice with the defense, maybe a Josh Allen turnover or you just get a stop. Comically the worst possible thing that could’ve happened happened.
He’s way too aggressive and doesn’t always understand when he should be aggressive and when he shouldn’t, it’s been true his whole career it’s just more recently the last two seasons the crazy offensive talent usually bails him out (like going for it on 4&1 when you need the field goal to win just so you can deny the opponent 40 seconds)
Last week going for the 1st down was the correct decision. Starting from the 30 the Packers would only have needed 30 yards in 40 seconds to get into FG range, with the Lions playing a practice squad defense they would have had a good chance to get into FG range.
That call to go for it on 4th and 1 and run down the clock makes a lot more sense than going for an onside kick (that you have to declare) down by 10 points with 12 minutes to go.
@edsmith9855 It made sense to do an onside kick, Lions defense wasn't getting stops all day. Bills had 8 possessions to that point, 5 TD, FG, missed 24 yd FG, and only 1 punt. They had a 9th but it was right at the end of the 1st half so I'm not even counting that. The average Buffalo drive Sunday was 57 yards, almost double the league average. Campbell had a reason to onside kick there, his mistake was not following through and doing an onside kick after the next TD. If you're going to go 'all in,' go all in. Why do teams all do the same onside kick that rarely works? Kick a rocket directly at the player straight across from the kicker and try to bounce it off him making it a scramble for a loose football.
If the bills get the ball back ans drive down the field, the game is over. Hands down. Giving them a potential FG does not change how many possessions the lions need to win. If the bills drive the field and even settle for a field goal, the game is over. It wasnt a bad decision.
Finally, someone gets it. They hadn't been able to stop them all day, with the exception of the missed chip shot field goal. In my opinion, the logic was, if the defense can't get it done, then they need to find another way to keep the ball out of Allen's hands. This is not even top 5 most risky Dan "Gamble" calls.

It's such a nonsensical new rule that you have to announce the onside kick. It's like the NFL is actively trying to make the game less fun. One of the most memorable Superbowl moments ever was the Saints' onside kick that basically won them the game.
It was a compromise they had to make when they changed the kickoff in a weak attempt to stave off future lawsuits by trying to make it look like they're making the game safer despite the fact they want to add more games and don't seem to give a flying fuck that Tua is probably another bad head hit away from dying on the field, their half ass concussion medical team that mostly don't do their jobs, they catch the obvious slam dunk symptoms but fail when it comes to hard hits and awkward lands, if a player lands and their head whiplashes that should be an automatic concussion test if they're serious about player safety but they treat it more like a kid who gets told to clean his room so he spends 10 minutes shoving everything into the closet and under his bed
No, the thing that won the Saints the Super Bowl was cheap shots on Brett Farve that basically made it impossible for him to function by the end of the game.
Defense wasn’t stopping the bills and it helped set up the trick onside kick
... because his defense hadn't stopped the bills all day.
Exactly. They needed two scores. If they kick the ball deep the Bills could run a 8 or 9 min drive and not leave enough time for two scores.
Then why not keep doing it. Unless he realized it was dumb as shit
The percentages still don’t make sense, stop it. It was a bad decision.
