This is the ONE story in the 'Doctor Who' Universe that even Big Finish doesn't consider Canon.

"EVEN MORE OF ME!"
I wasn't kidding when I said I'm relying on you folks watching to let me know what the concensus is for 'Real Time'. Please let me know in the comments below and also hit the "like" button to appease the almighty algorithm!
For things like that just check the Time Scales

As Samuel Davis would say “BEST TARDIS TEAM”
Oh my God, the Colin Baker clip from the Five-ish Doctor's was used perfectly in this.
2:25 Why is everybody running away? I'd love to spend a whole day with the adorable human teddy bear that is Colin Baker.
That was a well placed clip from The Five(ish) Doctor's Reboot, normal people probably wouldn't get it, but they have stupid earth brains so you know.
Man, the cyber-wars continuity is one of the most confusing things ever
Almost as confusing as Dalek continuity or... _shudder_ ...UNIT continuity...
It's even worse when you try to combine it with The Dalek/Earth wars timeline
And the Cybermen design not being consistent with the time period doesn't help. So the Cybermen in 2526 in Earthshock refer to Revenge which was set I think in the 29th or 30th century. The theory is Cybermen in Earthshock are time travellers which might explain the ship going back.
@@MrThorfan64 The way I try to make sense of it all is that the 60's stories happen chronologically for the Cybermen, then the Cyber Wars happens and they gain time travel (Earthshock, Attack, Ashad) so the stories start getting mixed up. Then when the Cybus ones turn up they reach space and combine with the remnants of the Mondasians.
The Cyberwars is probably one of the easier timelines in Doctor Who to follow which says more about Doctor Who timelines
For the proper Big Finish release, there are some extra scenes not shown here that set up the team being sent to Chronos & how they got the Doctor involved.
The reason he's wearing a blue suit here is because Evelyn wanted to see him in a morning suit & he thought she meant 'mourning', with blue being a colour of mourning on planets like Necros, he wore a blue suit.
In fact, that's where he & Evelyn enter the story; by returning to the TARDIS after a funeral.
I wish Ancension of the Cybermen and the Haunting and the Timeless Children was the sequel trilogy to Real Time
That would be some next level doctor who knowledge on chibnall if he made that connection, and it says something considering he acknowledges the morbius doctors and timeless feeling a bit like lungbarrow what with exploring the doctor’s origin
@@crimsondynamo615 If I was in Chibnall's shoes I would have made the connections by making one of the few problems the Doctor could not solve leaving the doctor responsible for the Cyberium and Ashad.
I love Evelyn, she is the perfect companion for audios like Real Time and Jubilee, as she has enough empathy to sympathise with the monsters but is also experienced enough to be able to see through their ploys, the way she basically gains the respect of the Dalek in Jubilee is a testament to how strong a character she is. Maggie Stables was amazing and her portrayal of Evelyn is brilliant.
Holy shit that face at 5:29 Six can look truly terrifying when he’s pissed off
Next Time: The origins of the Cybermen that was meant to be a Peter Davidson story, But at least it's all in audio form, Time to bring out some Spear Parts!
Spare Parts was my first ever Doctor Who audio story and I love it to bits
Spare Parts was also my first Big Finish story, well the first true Doctor Who one to involve the Doctor. The first Big Finish thing I listened to was I, Davros.
My first was Blood of the Daleks, an excellent story. Spare Parts was my first Cyberman audio story I listened to though.
If we ever get a "Wilderness Years" blu ray boxset, maybe they'll include the webcasts, the audio adaptations of the stage plays as well as the TV Movie.
And I'm hoping that if they do that, that the 8th doctor is on the cover. (With the movie hair and everything.)
I mean, the Shada webcast was included in the 3-disc Steelbook for Shada, so it's possible for these to show up... somewhere.
For me and my friends, when this web cast first came out it was super exciting. At the time web casts in general were a novelty in their own right. To have a new Doctor Who story with the Cybermen on the BBC was a boon. Being an animation done in earnest with an adult tone just felt special to us. It was a lovely 'secret' known about only by us 'real' fans. We loved it!
I quite enjoyed "Real Time" at the, er, time, and was gutted that there was no sequel. It was a great prologue to a potential epic.
Fun fact about Death Comes To Time: there was a character in it called the minister of time and when the BBC were interested in commissioning a new Doctor Who series Matthew Graham tried to pitch a revival featuring this character.
I love how he’s played by Stephen Fry. I should have known he was actually a Time Lord.
@@crimsondynamo615 Stephen Fry is the Rani. Canon!
Even more of me!
Gotta love The Five(ish) Doctors reboot.
I love Real Time. It's a fun Cybermen story and I love the atmosphere. I think the Cyber Controller twist is great. It's a shame we never got a sequel.
I'm not surprised you are reviewing Spare Parts as it VERY good Cyberman story.
Spare Parts is arguably better than every single televised Cyberman story, classic and new. It's a true blue masterpiece that Davison really deserved to have on television but we just didn't cause JNT cared too much about fanservice.
Oh its the obvious choice.
@@benw4409 I read about a plan for a story involving a King and two sons and one of the sons going with Dr into future and his brother makes the Cybermen but spaceship sends Mondas flying away from Earth.
Next time on Cybercember: The (First) Genesis of the Cybermen
You span that wheel until you got Spare Parts, didn't you?
I'd never seen this before so watched it before the review. I actually found it quite enjoyable. The exposition at the start was quite off-putting but it became less prominent about halfway through and I found myself really interested in the lore as well as really appreciating some proper Cyberman body horror. The twist about Evelyn was honestly a jaw-dropping moment, I really wish we'd got the follow up to this episode.
God, this takes me back to watching it using dialup internet. Ah memories.
And yes Evelyn is a great foil for the Sixth Doctor.
Also I'm hoping for The Reaping/The Gathering.
Both fantastic stories.
It's Spare Parts. The Reaping is really good though (still not sure how I feel about The Gathering).
@@DalekTheSupreme I can read you know.
OK I just listened/watched real time and that conversion scene... was bloody terrifying even without the visuals 😳
A story that ends on a cliffhanger, Gee now where have I heard that before?
If I were ever to cosplay the Sixth Doctor, I would either go with this blue coat or his regular outfit plus the blue cloak from Revelation of the Daleks. So that's one cool takeaway from this.
But, yeah, I didn't even bother finishing Real Time because nothing really grabbed my attention.
I watched this on the old Classic Doctor Who website on my PSP and it ran it at a about half a frame. Watched Screm Of Shalka that way too, ah to be young.
The reason why Six is dressed in blue was because of the limitations of the early internet. It would have been tricky to try and follow the different patterns of colors so to make it easier he’s dressed in all blue. Kind of wish that he was all black like how Collin wanted him to look originally.
Funny thing about this, I own this on CD, And yet I haven't listened to it.
this is an EXCELLENT....review. Also a story I was unaware of...will be seeking it out. Trying to think what other Cybergems you will uncover before the 2006 new series return.
Every time I see Colin Baker, he slides up in my ranking of the Doctor's incarnations.
Spare Parts! Yes! Haha! And they called me mad for suggesting it would turn up!
Also Spiral Scratch was 6th Doctor regeneration story before Big Finish did their own with The Brink of Death
Then there's Time's Champion which... holds an odd place as its not canon but considered to be nearly canon.
Big Finish needs to finish this story. That cliffhanger is too great!
Will you be doing the cyberman series I’ve listen to parts 1 and 2 and their pretty enjoyable
I first listened to the big Finish CD version which has scenes deleted from the webcast version at the beginning of the story the doctor and Evelyn have been to a funeral and Evelyn that blue suits the doctor
I remember when this came out along with Paul McGann's Shada and Scream of Shalka in the wilderness years of Dr Who. Doctor Who fans were used to slow story pacing anyway. It was just exciting to have any new who as it seemed impossible. As we had no internet bandwidth, it was hard enough work to get this downloaded to enjoy in those days over dial-up. I recall this came out weekly. So 10 mins a week (even if exposition) was a big deal. Everyone is so used to having all of Doctor Who of any era on tap today. Back then getting your hands on a VHS (let alone first DVD was only in 2000) , Big Finish and books, etc was hard slog to find here in Australia in a shop, more good luck to come across. Being a Doctor Who fan was not something you publicised here. If Silver Nemesis was the last Cybermen you saw, in 2002, this was exciting to know somebody still cared enough to make it. I remember the paradox cliff hanger being whooa. The evolution of Cybermen design here was cool. The graphics/visuals stuck in the mind at the time and the memory cheats. I remember thinking whoa if only they could make this for real on-screen.
OK I know that it's very unlikely to happen, But I hope in Cybercember William would cover Hour of the Cybermen, I'm not saying that he will mind you, It's just a hopeful thought.
I would love a cyberman design like this in the show itself
Yeah, something similar to this would be sick
www.reddit.com/r/doctorwho/comments/etgvqe/alternative_look_for_cybermen_series_10_finale/
Fun fact, the partly converted cyberdrone of Torchwood's "Cyberwoman" was entirely based on this artwork. Chibnall thought this was a massive mistake and I agree with him.
Does anyone know where I can find the Shada webcast? I've been trying to find it for a while. Great video btw ( I know I'm a bit late.)
Fuck UA-cam for strategically placing an ad just before the end of the beautiful scene when Evelyn is talking to the Cyber Controller. No UA-cam, I won't buy premium!
I know I'm kind of late, but you asked how other fans felt about it. I personally love this and is one of my favorite pieces of doctor who media. I love when the cybermen are portrayed in a very dark way, which this does very well. The cliffhanger ending doesn't really feel that bad, it feels like a sort of interpretive ending than a cliffhanger ending to me. I found the monologues of history to be very interesting, as we learn more about the cyber wars which I find to be a very interesting topic.
That cliffhanger is fantastic
Okay, now I'm interested.
Really a big finish cyberman audio was it going to be anything else?
I really quite liked Real Time, I watched it when it was released (Dad had really good broadband)
"What's the deal with professor Goddard?"
The Mr Tardis/Seinfeld crossover we never knew we wanted...
Will next year be Mastercember or Sontarcember?
I remember watching some of this, but I think the ultra gory conversions freaked out my tiny mind at the time, so I didn't finish it. So strange that such a game-changing twist happened in this story, and said twist seemingly being the main reason for the story to exist, only to be utterly ignored afterwards.
Would this benefit from a rework and new animation? I'd give it another go.
This story should be animated like Scream of the Shalka
Any chance of seeing something on The Dark Dimension? Those cybermen designs looked so promising...
Maybe it’ll get a mention in the cameos and stuff that he did at the end of last year thing
But unsure tbh seeing how these are filmed a good month or two in advance
I love how in one of the comics where the Cybermen basically one up the Time War the Dark Dimension design is used when it shows the Cybermen attacking the Fourth Doctor and they even convert poor K•9
I wish they would do a follow up in the Companion Chronicles range or something to complete the story.
2:30 where's that clip from??? Looks funny
The Five(ish) Doctors.
Where is the clip from 2:25 from?
The Five-ish Doctors Reboot from 2013.
*manifests a review of the reaping
I actually liked Real Time when it came out; I liked the gross body horror and the sinister cybermen. Yes, Who was as rare as hen's teeth at the time. I'm glad you explained the ending however as I don't think I cottoned to that at the time. Timey Wimeyness goes over my head a lot of the time.
Of course you're doing Spare Parts- you really can not avoid it. A most excellent adventure...
Ooooo the Spare Parts hype is real 😁
I guess I'm listening to Spare Parts for the first time ever tonight...
Well, I’ve never watched the webcast, but I do have the big finish CD, which may have more details, because it does explain why he’s wearing the blue coat. And frankly, it’s quite hilarious.
So, it’s been a few years since I’ve heard it, but I thought it was a pretty cool story...
I can’t remember but is spare parts the 5th doctor one? (Probably like a dozen of those tho)
Only story I can really remember is the one where the cybermen invade the land of fiction
If you listen to spare parts you wouldn't know no no it's basically Genesis of the Daleks for the Cybermen it's very good
@@markcuthbert5881 yeah was struggling to think of synopsis for spare parts exactly
Real Time was an interesting experiment but it's been nearly decade since I last watched it.
The one with 6th Doctor and Evelyn against demonic Cybermen
💕
I wish we saw more of the Cybermen using their former emotions to manipulate people
I've tried to watch this and Death Comes to Time but the animation is just so limited that I can't manage it. I think the massive info dumps and pacing issues compound the problem too. That said, I love Colin's blue suit, I love those new Cybermen designs and I think Evelyn is a worthy companion.
Ahh Stuart Lee
I quite like it, flawed yes, but enjoyable enough
Six and Evelyn are good and telling a story in real time was novel, but the story itself is lackluster and the supporting cast are basically cardboard cut-outs. Real Time is the poor sibling sitting between the flawed by very imaginative DCTT and solid execution of the Paul McGann Shada webcast.
Please do spare parts
I think if you didn’t do Spare Parts there might be uproar. 😄
I thought it was alright, I'm not sure about the canonicity though.
I didn't know that a Canadian company tried to make a Doctor Who animated series in the early 2000s... sounds like a great idea why the hell didn't it get the green light ???
I know you just wanted to review Spare Parts, the spinning wheel is a diversion.
I could really enjoy the dynamic between the doctor and evelyn, especially at the start of this adventure. They're obviously such a great pair but I disliked the tone of this story. It's just personal taste but I don't like the edgy stuff and towards the end it was gory and gruesome. Also I disliked the Cybermen design and didn't understand how it made them different from the others.
I can't recall the story very well but after every adventure I watch, I give the story a rating and write down some of my thoughts on a google doc. These are basically those thoughts regurgitated. My rating was a 5/10 and I'm usually very positive with my ratings but I am also biased against edgier stories.

You say bad animation was a thing of the past. But I'm afraid i couldn't have liked the tv dalek's animation if you payed me really very little story and it never went anywhere.
Do some big finish
Watch the end of the video.
My request?
Fulfilled
Excellent
I'd like to point out that "webcast" should only be used in referance to the way it was released - such as "television" for stories released on televsion, "webcast" is for stories released on the internet. So it's use for in the title of this video is kinda pointless, as one wouldn't refer to another story as "Doctor Who: Closing Time *Tele-Vision*". Hope this helps.
