Seriously! What parent wants baby clothes they can’t pitch in the washing machine? And babies grow so fast, it’s kind of a waste of fancy yarn.

I would only knit something in fancy yarn for the baby of a fellow knitter who would love the yarn . And plenty of coordinating bibs to help keep it clean 😂

Absolutely, man-made fibers have a place in the world of needles and hooks. Great for those garments that are going to have some wear and tear. Great to practice on before I knit with something more expensive. I have major stashes of both man-made and natural. Love both types.🥰🐑🧶

Tina, I so enjoy your podcast. I find myself waiting for the next episode. Thank you so much for including acrylic yarn in the survey. I think acrylic has a place in the conversation not all of my makes need the high price yarn. I love Lionbrand heartland acrylic yarn it washes well and it holds up. Please make a Whitmoor pullover tutorial, your sweater is gorgeous. Thanks so much for being an inspiration.

Sorry no tutorials, it's a paid for pattern so wouldn't be ethical. It's a very well written pattern. If you have knitted a top down raglan before you would be fine knitting this 😁

It was great to see your stash video with the variety and it including acrylic. I've made 3 garments so far and the one that is the most comfortable for me is the one made with acrylic. I love knitting with soft yarn - be that merino, acrylic, other fibres- because I have sensitive skin. Right now what is in the budget for me is acrylic and your stash video reminded me that I like stylecraft yarn. It's made the idea of more garment knitting possible again.

I use acrylic yarn for jumpers and anything that’s going to be next to my skin because I can’t find a wool that doesn’t itch. Also I can’t afford high end yarn. For socks I use 75/25 wool/nylon because my feet don’t mind! Wear my socks for two days. Thankyou SO much Tina for this down to earth channel and for being so encouraging! ❤

Hi Tina, I wear my knitted socks about 10 wears as well but i am just wearing them around the house, if I wear them out for the day I will wash them afterwards. I have just used up all the acrylic yarn I have to make slippers and won’t buy more as I don’t like the feel of it in my hands when knitting, I just prefer the feel and smell of natural fibres🌻

I can not believe how far my knitting had come. About a year or 2 ago, I knit my first sweater watching your videos. Today, I have done so much more - colorwork, cables, lace, steeking, and currently knitting another cardigan.
I knit with all sorts of yarn(mainly natural, non-superwash) and have yarn from economical like Drops to Nutiden/cashmere. Still, I appreciate that you use yarn of varying price points. I started knitting in 2019 and if I had encountered your videos back then, I would have made better yarn choices as some of the yarns I bought back then were just pricier for no reason. I think using budget-friendly yarn is an excellent idea because it shows people they do not have to spend $150 on a sweater and they can see how beautiful it turns out. Let's be fair, if someone compliments your sweater, they are not complimenting the yarn - it's the actual garment they love.
If someone prefers hand-dyed yarn and have the budget for it, that's great. However, using more accessible yarn makes this wonderful craft open to a lot more people.

Hi Tina,I use acrylic yarn for blankets and shawls, knitwear and baby items.Sometimes there will be 80% premium acrylic and 20% wool in my yarn for shawls and knitwear.I purchase commercial sock yarn for my socks,WYS,Opal and Drops are my favourites.I do have some hand dyed sock yarn, but I do not purchase alot of it,although I love the wide range of colours.
It is refreshing to watch a podcaster who used acrylic yarn.I only really know of one other who uses acrylic quite happily.I have been a follower for a long time now and have liked that you use acrylic yarn and discuss it on your podcasts.😊

Hello, great podcast content and lovely projects. I knit with wool and acrylic depending on who will receive the end product. I believe everyone more or less started with acrylic content yarn and forgot its uses when they moved on to the more natural yarn. Both have their uses. As for socks, if I am using them around the house, I tend to wear them often (for the week) before I put them in the wash. I wash my socks in the washing machine and will dry them on sock blockers if I remember to do so.

Hi Tina, In the 80’s I remember knitting a really lovely mohair sweater that was all blocks of colour, I used to wear it as a coat. Unfortunately I no longer have it but wish I did as it was probably one of the best sweaters I have owned, i really loved it that sweater. It was not a cheap knit at the time but it lasted for years and years. I like middle of the road prices, Wool Warehouse is my favourite yarn shop too! I also knit a 100% chunky cardigan for lounging around the house and I love it, very cosy and warm. Regarding the socks, I tend to wear mine two or three times and then wash them but sometimes i will wear socks just to go the shops and only wear them for an hour or two, in that case I would probably leave them for longer before washing. Love all of your yarn choices, if the yarn looks pretty then I am sold on it no matter what the content is. Happy knitting!

Another good video. I throw my socks in the machine on gentle and hang to dry after wearing them three times. Then hang to air in between that.
For all baby items I use acrylic, as well as for people who do not like anything scratchy.
Currently knitting some socks out of drops nord. I find it stretches a bit after knitting a previous pair with the same yarn si I just keep that in mind now adjusting my needle size or stitch count.
Love the sweater you are working on, you inspire me to try one of those.

I prefer natural fibers and luckily, even for bigger projects, there are companies around, like Drops, that make it doable. I don't want to sound like a yarn snob, but I don't like the feel of acrylic on my hands/skin and when it feels good, most of the times, it costs more than wool or alpaca etc. Now what I really love working with, it's cotton. I love cotton or cotton blends. Most people use cotton or for non wearable things, like pot holders or blankets etc but I use it a lot for tops and sweaters, even for socks, if I can get my hands on a nice elastic cotton, like it was the Katia cotton stretch, which is unfortunately discontinued. I find the sweaters made of cotton perfect for Autumn and Spring. So, what I am trying to say is that what matters is what YOU like and not what the others think. We enjoy your videos regardless of the yarn you use 😀
Regarding the socks. I use my knitted socks normally as I use all the rest of my socks. I definitely don't wash them after only one use, unless something unfortunate happens. I don't know if that is unhygienic but I do use my socks a couple or even three days before I wash them. We do shower a lot, they don't feel ....dirty.
Sorry for the blabbering and I hope I didn't make anyone angry with my yarn opinion.
Looking forward to your next video

I prefer to knit with natural fibres, mainly because they're warmer, though I do occasionally use acrylic or a mix. My favourite is Drops Karisma. Not expensive and machine washable. Pills a bit but it's a good workhorse yarn. For your sock question I usually wear a pair 3 times, sometimes 4 or 5. I have a friend that wears hers 5 times. I hand-wash all mine - using wool wash. As some of mine are commercial yarn and some are indie dyed - and I forget which are hand wash only - it's easier just to do them all the same. I'm retired, so spending time hand washing is easy.

I have no idea where the surveys are. When I wear my socks at home only I use them 3-4 days before I put them to wash. I shower every day, my floors are clean (no outside shoes allowed beyond the front door, no messy pets or people) so they don't really get dirty or sweaty. If I wear them in shoes going out, I would wash them after each use. I could not care less about trends and fashions. I do what works for me.

As wool wicks away moisture hand knit wool socks or garment really don’t need washing that often you just have to be brave and ignore how we were taught to wash after the introduction of man made fibres which odour etc 🤣🤣🤣

I use acrylic yarn for gift knits. I have sensitive skin and a lot of natural fibers irritate my skin. About the only natural fiber I can wear is Merino. Even the softest of yarns can irritate my skin. I wear my socks several times before washing. I think if I had odorous feet I would probably wash after each use. I generally just machine wash and dry in cold water with our everyday laundry soap.

Wys wool for my socks and just once in a while I will treat my self to a more expensive ball of wool for my socks like the new Rowan sock wool I bought the mixed blue colour way ocean. It is really nice and soft and a bit fluffy but at £12.95 a ball it’s over my normal budget for wool I think a lot of people would like to be able to buy high end wool me including but I think acrylic wool has come a long way and the colours are fantastic 🧶

Hi Tina I only recently found your podcast and I really enjoy watching you. On the hand knitted socks I usually wear them at least twice before washing. I used to hand wash but now use the wool wash in the machine. I use acrylic yarn for blankets and I recently knitted my first jumper ( the flax by tin can knits) I used 30% wool 70% acrylic for that and I’m happy with the feel and fit. I don’t like mohair at all I find it really itchy and to frog it is a nightmare. I love hand dyed yarn for shawls and socks. Like you said everyone uses what they can afford and feel comfortable wearing. ❤

I use both. It depends on the project really. I use mostly acrylics or acrylic blends for afghans and blankets. I use wool blends for socks. Same for shawls and other accessories, though sometimes there will be a 100% natural fiber yarn in there. I also want to be realistic about the care needed and who will be caring for it and will they do it? I do a lot of sale and clearance shopping to help with cost. As for your sock question, I'll go 2 or 3 wearings before washing.

I usually wear regular store bought cotton socks first, and over these I wear my knitted socks,so they don't get dirty often, so I wash the knitted ones once a month.
I like using merino wool with silk or cashmere. It really depends on who I'm making project for. If Im going to gift it to someone who is definitely going to appreciate it, I'll go all out and use the expensive wool with silk or cashmere. But if I think the person I'm gifting to may not be so appreciative or doesn't handwash, then I'll use acrylic.

I look forward to our chats so much. I am still a new knitter. Super slow and not confident. I do love your videos and am working up the courage to do socks and a sweater. I have been crocheting since I was young. My grandmother taught me. I didn't realize then, but the yarn really caused issues for me. The baby yarn did not. Now yarn has come a long way and I love lots of them. I do struggle sometimes with natural fibers. I do love to touch them and have found some that don't break my hands out. The price makes me only want to use them for special items and then I want to keep it safe. Lol it is hard to make everyday that special occasion. Thank you for sharing with us. See you next week!

Hi Tina, there definitely is a need and a place for acrylic or man made fibre. I use acrylic for blankets and my 2 yr old Granddaughter (her mum feels the extra attention wool requires is a waste of time and money - yes, Mums not knit worthy) but the 2 yr old daughter loves that Nanna made it 🥰. Even if I had the money, I would first consider the purpose of the item and wear and tear when choosing the yarn I would use. To me it’s pure commonsense not what is en trend. Some channels make so many items per week and I wonder what happens to them? I don’t know how they afford the money or where they store it all…. Please, stick to what you do. I enjoy your down to earth practical view. Looking forward to seeing Foxy. Have a great yarny week. 🐨🦘👋🏻

Hi Tina, I just love your Whitmore cardigan & the Whitmore jumper is nearly finished too, can’t wait to see that.
I’m so glad you mentioned the socks issue, I was reading somewhere the other day on a sock Facebook page that apparently if you knit socks with 75% wool like I do mainly West Yorkshire Spinners, the wool contains lanolin so they not only keep your feet warm in Winter, but cool in summer, so in theory with a daily shower you don’t need to wash them after every wearing, I wash mine after every 2/3 wear in the washing machine on wool wash & they are fine. Mind you some people have pongy feet!!

Hi Tina, I wanted to write to let you know that I loooove your podcasts even though I don't do dolls or hardly knit with any thing thicker than fingering. I started watching you because you were the only one talking about the cost of yarn and keeping it reasonable. You are a doll and a treasure on youtube. Your authenticity comes across in spades and thats why I watch. I loved your vlogmas, again keeping it real. You are definitely a breath of fresh air here, please keep doing what you do!!!
I tried drops and wool warehouse because of you! I love what you make things out of, love seeing how each turns out, wears, etc.
I live in a tropical climate and really only knit with plant based yarn. Although currently making one of my only wool projects (although i love wool, just doesnt make sense for me) a self drafted large rectangular shawl out of aran weight wool only to use while traveling. I'ved used wool for some gift knits for people in colder climates but even for socks I use plant based yarns most of the time. Additionally, I use fingering and lace most of the time, again because of the weather here. I do find that I prefer yarn with natural fibers but thats just me, I like store bought clothing out of natural fibers too. I wish I could say how often I wash hand knit socks but Ive only made before for others, I have my very first pair for myself on my needles now. I like your idea though wash after 2-3 wears.

I knit with both. I love wool for garments and accessories because it’s so hardy, warm, and repels rain, but at a knitting group I go to sometimes, people are usually knitting with really top tier natural fibers and hand-dyed yarns from local people. I love a lot of the small local dyers, but financially, it’s not feasible to only knit with those. Plus, I’ve found the socks, while buttery soft and lovely, to wear out on the bottoms easily. Some of my sock soles are more darn than original knit. 😮😅

Hiya, thanks so much for such a fun filled podcast x I tend to wash my socks, which I usually knit in 75/25 yarn, when I think they need it, sorry, that’s not too much help, but like you, if I have been out walking, they will need a quick wash, but if just wearing them at home it could be after 4 or 5 wears. My choice of yarn for jumpers etc, is a mixture, but as a special treat I will go to indie yarn yarn for a special project to make all the effort a lovely experience to knit with. So, to summarise, I think there is a place for all mixes of yarn , for our pockets and for the ideal yarn for the perfect project, thanks again for your fun, informative podcasts, always fun and areal treat! ❤

Hi Tina, I wear my socks two or three times before I wash them, i use both acrylic and natural yarns. I also use acrylics for some projects that will benefit the person I may gift to as they would want to throw in the machine multiple times as it might be for a baby or child . I also have crocheted many acrylic blankets over the years when natural wool wasn’t as popular as it is now ,and they are still going strong . It is lovely knitting and crocheting in all these natural fibres but can be very expensive ,still like to treat myself and make the most of sales. Hello Tina, for my socks, I always use wool or cotton for summer. I wash them after every time I wear them because I wear them from bedtime to bedtime, so about 24 hours and after that, they need a wash. I enjoy knitting socks so when they do wear out, I always have some waiting. For my general knitting, I use a lot of acrylic but if the price is right will use natural fibers. I would love to use some of the fancier yarns that I see in tutorials, but right now, the budget is tight so I use what I can afford which in many cases, is just as pretty when crochet or knit up.

Hi Tina, you always make me laugh, you’re just naturally funny. Glad you wore your Whitmoor cardigan today as I’m about to start mine, just waiting on the yarn (acrylic) coming my mail. I haven’t bought the pattern yet - are there short rows for the back. I think I’d like my neck higher but no idea how you’d put short rows in all that ‘lace’ work. Socks - I haven’t ventured down that rabbit hole, yet, but I’d be tempted to move the start of round marker. Yarn - I use both wool and acrylic, more acrylic really as I knit mostly accessories, and crochet blankets. I love lace and cables and intricate patterns. Acrylic has come a long way from granny’s thick scratchy stuff. The fingering in acrylic isn’t bad for practice. I also like the blends of wool and acrylic. The cost of hand dyed yarn is prohibitive. I understand the work involved, it’s so labour intensive and I’d love to support hand dyers but one skein is seldom enough to do much with. Love, love, love your podcasts. It’s like having coffee with a mate. Hope your work week is kind to you. I’m retired 🎉 Try not to be jealous 😂. PS. In terms of my wool socks, I rotate my socks and wash them every 2 weeks and have about 5 pairs in the rotation at a time. I do wear them to to work on most days and feel they are not dirty when I hand wash them. I am the only knitter in my family, so I had to guesstimate on how many times I can wear my wool before washing.

I use acrylic for blankets and some gift knits like for babies for their great wash and wear care. I agree the knit/crochet community is generally of the mindset of using the yarn that you like, made of whatever you want. I machine wash (on gentle cycle with cool water) my socks after 3-4 wears usually but I’ve gone as long as 7 wears with no issue. I think it helps to air out your socks between wears, even if it’s just overnight. In my experience, socks made with super-wash wool stretch out a bit so I knit socks a bit snug knowing they will stretch 10-30% depending on the yarn.

I wash my socks after 2 or 3 wears too, as Heidi said below, they get bit saggy otherwise. I hand wash but rinse and spin in the machine, air dry.
All my socks are knitted in commercial yarn, although I have one special yarn that I will make socks with. I have to admit to having a stash of hand-dyed sock yarn which I have collected over the last few years, but I will use it for shawls and blankets. Most of my DK/aran is acrylic or blends. I most likely will move more to more natural fibre yarn in future, but it will still be commercial and affordable.

We use our afghans constantly, dog too, so want to be able to throw in the washer and dryer. My most warn sweater is also acrylic. It's very oversized but elbow length sleeves, cropped length, boat neck garter stitch. It is for knocking about the house while cooking and cleaning. Wool is for my socks, shawls and Sunday-go-meeting sweaters (when I want to be fancy).

This question about socks is similar to how often do you change your sheets. I wear mine mostly 1 or 2 days, no longer. Wash in the machine on their own, so I save all my socks till I run out. fabulous video. I crochet socks using non wool because wool makes me itch. Would love to be able to wear wool but it is not to be. I wash my socks after 1 wear don't have a problem with wearing out. I think that wool does not need to be washed as often as it is self cleaning and you get a sheep smell anyway. Shop bought socks are thin and don't pad the sole too well; I find with my crochet socks they are thicker and last longer although crochet does not have the same stretch as knitted socks but they do work well enough for me.

Hi Tina. I’ve gifted most of the socks I’ve made so only have 2 pairs for myself at the moment. I wash them after 2 wears, in the machine on the hand wash cycle. No problems. I could have a longer wear but I’m a bit of a Mrs Bucket I think so don’t like to leave them any longer. I do shower every day but think if I left them for 10 days they’d probably walk by themselves 😂😂😂. Maybe that says too much about my feet 🙈. I’ve only used mixed blend, sock specific, yarn ie WYS/Opal etc for sock knitting. But use acrylic or anything else I fancy for other things. My eyes popped at the price of hand dyed yarns, though I have bought them a couple of times for shawls. There seems to be a bit of yarn snobbery out there, which is fine if you can afford it but I’m happy to stick within my budget. Loving your Whitmore ❤. Happy Sunday

Thanks Val, you need more socks for you. I'm a very selfish knitter 😁

Having come back to knitting/crochet after many many years I have gone for budget wools, (just in case it all goes horribly wrong!!) currently knitting a cardigan (free pattern) with King Cole big value Aran 100% acrylic and have been surprised how lovely it feels knitted!

Hi, I’m fine thank you, hope you are too. Loving seeing all your knitting! I’m currently alternating knitting (cardigan) crochet (attic 24 Springfrost blanket) and cross stitch!😂 maybe your Stitchy bug will return later? These things go in cycles sometimes. xx

I love wool, but sometimes acrilic and blanda actually make more sense. Lino know baby stuff will be washed often and expect people to hand wash it is not realistic... so almost better to use acrilic. Also moth does not like synthetic fibers, while a fancy wool sweater is like a magnet.

I’ve been throwing my toys out of the pram! Started the Whitmoor sweater last week. I’ve had to take it back 3 times, seem to go wrong on round 7 every time. 🙈
