According to Ellie from Craft House Magic, the Vertebrae is the perfect cardigan because it's easy to put on and doesn't get soiled as quickly as other cardigans or pullovers. The Blankets with holes are, according to (again, sorry) my local Children's Hospital, unsuitable for babies because the little fingers can get trapped. I don't have babies to knit for, so no first-hand advice on patterns. Hugs and good luck with the timing!

I'd knit the purl soho striped blanket. It's contemporary and something a young mother would love to take around and use. Simple and so cute. You could do this with worsted weight yarn too so it would go faster. Knitting blankets is slower than crocheting! But worth it! As for sweaters I'd either go with the stripes or the tin can knits. Both are something a new mom would LOVE to use for her baby. Simple and easy. I have 13 grandkids and have knit lots of kid projects. Good luck!

I have found that fingering weight garments for babies get the most wear! I think it's the whole light layers thing. I have knit many Flax Light (free) by Tin Can Knits and they have gotten lots of wear. Sunnyside Cardigan (free) by Tanis Lavalee is a nice option for a cardigan, you can choose between a lace motif or cables, and the button band is knit as you go (I don't like picking up stitches 😄). I recently made the Newborn Vertebrae for the first time for my own babe who is expected early April. I am working on a baby size Habitation Throw by Helen Stewart and have knit a DK version as a baby gift before. I have made a Garter Rib Blanket (free) by Orange Flower that turned out nicely. A few pairs of Newborn Socks (free) by Tabi Gandee. I recently made a pair of Baby Mitts (free) by Susan B Anderson, so I can't vouch for the sizing and stay-on-ability yet! The Garter Ear Flap Hat (free) by Purl Soho is very cute. I have knit a stuffy for a late spring baby before (Dino by Susan B Anderson). Fingering Entrechat (short sleeve shrug cardi, fingering weight) and Powder Blue (short sleeve cardi, worsted weight) by Frogginette are both very sweet for a baby girl. I aspire to try knitting some legwarmers, a bunting for the nursery, and washcloths for my own babe (as well as blankets, sweaters, tops, hats, socks, a stuffy 😅).

Haven’t knit any of the baby sweaters, but I’m a Huge Garter Fan, so I’d pick “Joyous”. “Gramps” is absolutely adorable, &easy to modify if desired. The round, large variegated lace blan is gorgeous! I love the Purl Soho garter stripe blan, (you could stripe any way you’d like!), but I’m a Garter Fanatic.
All the sweaters, blankets are beautiful. The designs & items you’ve created are gorgeous, I’m sure that no matter what you choose, New Mom will appreciate! Can’t wait to see what you make!

Hi Tina. I always seem to be making baby things and only last week one of Jodie's friends announced they were pregnant. She would like me to knit some baby socks because shop bought ones just don't stay on. They are really quick to knit and look very sweet. I use the Baby Socks pattern by Kate Atherly (free). A car seat blanket with seat belt holes is another good one. I used the Chevron Love Car Seat Blanket by BreeAnna Laub. It's crochet but very easy. I also like to make a bucket bag using a project bag template but not adding a zip. I then pop in the socks, baby lotion, shampoo, etc and it can then be used to store nappies and wet wipes. I love the sheep cardi and the Gramps is very cute. Happy knitting. X

The last baby knit I did was for a coworker . I made a simple 3 button cardi in a pastel on cream yarn and a fancy lace bonnet and simple booties . It was a girl I didn't make a blanket ran out of time. I've found buying buttons to go with yarn before making is a good idea. That way you can make the buttonholes to fit as you go . Much easier than try ing to find ones that match and fit after ! As for the blanket I've been told a smaller size is easier to fit in a car seat for infants. Also they now tell parents Not to have a jacket on baby in the car seat ! That means in really cold climates baby needs a warm sweater and several blankets in the car ! Additionally I've cotton and bamboo blend yarn in my stash for gifts in warm seasons or to a warm climate ! Sorry for long post I'm catching up 😂 I've heard nice things about Tin Can knits but haven't tried !Love Foxys knickers 😂

Thanks for sharing the various items you are looking at. Leafy baby blanket is lovely but you have such a great idea about the sturdier ones (patterns ) mum putting down a blanket for baby in an easy wash yarn ,something to bring with her as needed depending on weather or environment (park) they are in .
I do like your idea of a cardigan , ability to take on and off and put on as needed , carry it with her.
I look forward to seeing what you decide.

At the moment they are not saying, maybe they don’t know. I’ll wait a little longer before deciding on my knits. A blanket and cardigan is what I’m thinking about for the moment. I will be keeping a close eye on what you show. I have no idea what young mothers like to put their babies in. It was all white when I had mine and even when my son had his children. I'm in a similar position and want to knit a summer weight cardy the problem is the parents don't know the gender (and don't want to know) so which way do I cross the front over? I found a pattern in an old magazine that has just one button at the top so maybe I could get away with no button at all. I like the idea of a floor blanket for baby to roll around on so thanks for the suggestions. There are a few you have mentioned that look suitable - particularly the round one. So far thinking is as far as I have got!

Start the heel for the vanilla sock tutorial and carry on the same as vanilla sock . I hope this helps.
