6:34 "This car can pass everything on the street except for a gas station."
What a great line!
My car is like that.
@Donald Lentz Yup to that.
It's an old line I've heard mostly with old Caddies
Smiles per gallon
Wait... is that miles per gallon or gallons per mile?
I bought a 1969 GTO Judge in 1971.
Beautiful car.
I took my wife on our first date to the Oregon Coast in it.
We are still married.
Jay took my son and I on a tour of his shop.
Jay is exactly the person he portrays on his videos.
Kind, generous of his time and a true gentleman.
Don't think I've ever seen Jay have more fun with a guest. Hats off to friends.
"i like the headers" then 20 minutes later, destroys a set of headers 😂😂
+austen lockhart I know Right?(LOL!!!)
Bottoming out one time didn't do that to the headers, that's been happening for a while, back in the day, all our headers looked that way.
it's called "clearancing"
@@bigredc222 it only takes one time to crush headers. I hope that Jay had a new set put on. Whoever paved the highway was a clown.
It's going to keep happening unless they are custom fit, I don't think the guy needs Jay to buy him a new set of headers.
He probably wouldn't let Jay buy them anyway.
I hade bought a 1969 olds 442 convertible in 1977. It was my first car I actually paid for with my mom as a co-signer for $1.700.00. I was a junior in High School. It had the big block 400 with the 400 transmission duel exhaust. Electric windows, electric bench seat, top and even a electric radio antenna
Air loaded. My Dad was a parts manager for GMC in the late 60s, I was the youngest of four kids so my father would trade for vista cruser station wagon every other year until he finally bought a 1975 98 Royal with the 455 brand new that he had for as long as he could drive. We where a Oldsmobile family so the 442 was my dream car. I had lost my job when I was 20 and the car needed electrical work and a new top,the weather in Kansas City was not kind to a convertible, so I sold it for $500.00 and watch this person burn rubber all the way down the street laughing as he left. One of the worst days of my life. It was nice to watch one run again on your video. Thanks Jay. Bobby Hawkins
My dad had a 68 coupe. He sold it before I was born though sadly. My favorite American muscle car of all time. Looks so badass
Knowing Jay's character, he probably had his garage team solve the bottoming out problem, and replaced the headers. Not his fault, but I'm sure he took a personal interest. And enjoyed Paul Jackson Jr's stories and laugh.
I agree.
olds 455 ran oil injection
Absolutely
doubt it
Actually, I would leave the car just like that... could you imagine? "What happened here? Oh, Jay Leno did it" I would love to have my car with a dent made by Jay Leno, suddenly, your car is worth 3 times as much.

Wish I still had my 68 :(
+onemorebrando some say two door coup
2= positraction rear end!
Wish I still had my 69 as well. Oh, the mistakes of our youth. :-(
I miss 1969 Olds 442
And custom plates thar read IEATZ28
Good review. I remember when Paul bought it, but hadn't followed the restoration as we don't get to see each other that often. When Dad got the '67 I remember him saying "442" stood for "400 CI, 4 Barrel, and 2 Exhaust", but I also heard the reference to "4 Barrel, 4-Speed, and 2 Exhaust" which made more sense as I recall the 442 being the only Olds with a 4-speed. As for the mileage, it comes with the territory. As I remember, the '67 only got about 12 MPG with a stock Olds 400 and 3-speed Automatic.
Matt Jackson (Paul's older Brother)
Matt Jackson You guys are referring to Old's add's that changed from year to year, Jay should fix the exhaust anyone that drives a lowered car should know better.
Your reminiscence adds to the fun of the video!
It was a Oldsmobile 400 Rocket with 2 Edelbrock 4 barrel carburetors. There were a few 442s that had the Old's 455 Rocket with 2 Edelbrock 4 barrel carburetors.
@@tskraj3190 , my friend bought the famous Hurst Olds. What a ride your car and the Hurst Olds were. Yes, I forgot the W-30 Olds
Thank you so much for the memories.
Matt Jackson nice story buddy 👍🏻🇬🇧
Paul Jackson Jr. is one of the most recorded session guitarists of all time, a true legendary "sideman" most people don't probably even know. 😎
"Headers signed by jay Leno"
Nope those headers were too long for street use.. Hung way too low..
Such a beautiful muscle-car, I wish Oldsmobile was alive until these days
Olds was the best quality of all the GM stuff in those days for sure.
If it was still alive they wouldn't make em like they did in 69
*Paul Jackson, Jr. is now my favorite artist! Seriously, what an awesome guy!*
Jay really knows all the cool roads and cruisin' spots, huh? Can't stop watchin' these- he SO cracks me up, I just LOVE J.L, and he crafts the show like he crafts his cars, always plugging all the principle's and part guys, too- and throwin' in a clip from a past show. True class act.
had the olds f85...1969. same blue color. same body. 350 small block. I loved it. some power. loved driving it.
I took my first road test in my friend's'69 Cutlass with the 330 High Compression Motor and a high stall torque converter, it chirped the tires every time it shifted. He failed me by 1-Point!!
@@robinreiley1828 - My father, and then my older brother, had a stock Cutlass. I don't remember the year or what size engine it had. It wasn't a 442 but it did have the same blue color paint as the one in this this video.
One thing interesting about the body design was how rounded it was. That sticks in my mind and I've tried to find out about it but all the Cutlasses I see online are all 442's.
You wouldn't happen to know anything about it would you? (Sorry about the sketchy information)
i've seen a lot of cars in Jay's Garage and like most of them,
but this one is different, it speaks to me ..
it hit me in the guts.. absolutely LOVE IT!
really one of the nicest body styles. probably my favorite of the Chevelle, GTO, Skylark GM line up and theres a vintage road test that shows that they may handle the best out of those cars.
Haven't clicked a video so fast in a long time. 442 is my dream car. Better believe it will be my mid-life-crisis car lol.
This guy is an amazing guitar player
He is a guitar player. Amazing is unnecessary.
Just glad Jay shares these choice vehicles with us. Love the fact he enjoys driving them rather than just putting them up on a pedestal and just show them. His shows always feel like you are just hanging out and exchanging stories...
I don't watch TV so programs like this are a real treat. Thank you all for putting on a great show.
Both the guy and car look good for their age. lol
Black don't Crack

yes they do, they smoke it!
MrKdr500 there more white people on crack than black
27pattywhack2 everyone cracks

I love the way the front bumper meets with the hood with the "442" in between. Classic stuff. It's little things like this that make the car special IMO.
THE BUMPER SHOULDN'T PUSH THAT FAR UP.
The only thing I disliked the 1969 Cutlass is the bumper in the middle giving a weird underbite appearance.
Hey Jay, my wife and I saw you at Tommy T's in San Leandro (SF Bay Area) in the early '80's, and we'd never laughed so hard at clean material. It was a real tour de force; unforgettable, and we were always sure you'd make it.
I've been a car guy since my single digit years and owned three before I had a license. Marin County was cow and chicken country back then. I have to say you're living a fantasy I've had since I saw Bill Harrah's collection as a kid. You far outdone him, and you're educating new generations. God bless you and yours!
My father had a '69 Cutlass Supreme that he special ordered with the 442 powertrain. That car sent me down a path of loving muscle cars from the 60's that still exists today.
What a cool car and Paul was a great sport about everything too. Loved seeing you two in action in this old hardtop.
i was given a 1969 442 for my 16th birthday by my uncle, i sold it 2 yrs later when i joined the Marine Corps to a CT state police officer...huge regret.
Could you imagine he gives you a ticket 10 years down the road for speeding 😂
Loved the 442's. My brother had a 67 and a 70 that he'd let me shift from the passenger side when I was just a lil buggar. What an era! Thanks Jay for sharing and good luck Paul. Don't get into too much trouble with it!
Once upon a time I had a 69 Cutlass, red with white convertible top....350 cu with a Quadrojet. I sure miss that car.
My mom had one of these cars, and on road trips she was always getting speeding tickets. I got real good as a kid looking out for the CHP, then when I was older I got to drive it occasionally even though I had my own 69 Charger
442 is such a classic
Really Enjoyed This Jay and Paul!!! That darn 442 was My Dream Car when I was a kid and still is!
This is one of the beat so far. Thank you for another great show.
Very Skilled Guitar Player and the Guitar designed after your beautiful car is amazing. love the 442 always have
"we could skip a couple of lunches"
LOL

I just started listening to paul jackson and I am really digging his music. I've been playing it in the shop all day haha. Beautiful oldsmobile!
The more I watch this video the more I like the car. Great stance, great exhaust note, gorgeous paint. Really really nice car
Ouch! Need to check the ride-height and spring-rate on that thing -- especially with those big headers hanging down like that...
Hey Jay!!!
How about an episode that goes over the artwork you have hanging in the garage?
Good idea!
Props to Paul. What a career and ride! Thanks for sharing, jay. Hope you never stop these videos I watch them ALL on my lunch breaks. :))
I’ve had 3 of these.. my dad had olds growing up and too this day I’ll always love this year and car..❤️
Always wanted a 442, though would prefer it as stock as possible.
buy that man some new headers jay!
Hey Guys ..The headers have kissed the pavement more then the two times that it happened in this episode. Take another look, they have quite a bit of material taken off of them. And that did not happen from this go round...
jsh3234 I thought so too…you can spot where different hits were harder than others.
wasn't the first time and won't be the last until he replaces those drag racing springs.
The way the guy talked, it sounded like he hit the headers many many times before. And I'm sure Jay fixed him up, Jay is a great guy like that
You know Jay hooked him up with new headers probably better one's that what the car already had
what an absolutely beautiful car, the simplicity of the design and the nice lines, there are no mistakes
YESSS!!! FINALLY a CUTLASS on Jay Leno's Garage...!! keep them coming!!!
The big block Chevy "works" just fine. However, the heart of a car is it's engine and it would have been nice to see an Olds V8.
Agreed!!
All that money and WRONG MOTOR. This is NO LONGER A 442.
No issues with his choice to drop in a Chevy big block. Sounds like there might have been some drama in getting the original motor rebuilt? Personally though I feel the stock engine had more than enough torque and HP, especially when running stock rubber.
@@mikecalabrese28 There is no problem of rebuilding an Olds V8 and they are still available as cores. I myself have about 8 cores cheaply. It is just a cheap way of putting a crate motor an made a great car just a fake.
poppet vavled loop scavenged
Put the olds engine back in!
Beautiful. I like how understated and original this car looks while putting the work where it makes a difference when driven. Very cool!
That is a very fine looking 69 442 Mr. Jackson. I had a chance to get a 66 Impala 2Dr. Hardtop with a similar blue and Black top ( No SS so bench seat and column shift ) 283 with a powerglide, and your Olds reminds me of the deal I missed. ( I would never get it close to being as nice as your 442 but it had that Lighter blue shade of metallic blue ). I recently sold my 1 and only build, a 1955 210 Delray Club coupe that I cherished for nearly 30 years. That Blue has me looking for a Impala Hardtop, 4 door or 2, they are all fine .
I know Jay was "juicing " you on the dust here and there but hey , they car showed very well on the video so no harm or foul , and now you need to repair the Header pipes , thanks for showing your car fresh out of the paint shop and get Jay to help you re- shape the tubes.
Ahhh the car from 'driver' game ps1
won93r I thought it was a chevelle
That was a chevelle
Awesome car. Always loved the 442.
Thanks so much Jay for doing all these reviews! This is the funniest review I've seen from The Garage! I'm a guitarist too, and having taught so many students licks from Thriller, it's so good to see the man behind the music! Keep on rockin!
Nice car Paul, the engine sounds awesome. And the fact that you have modified it so that it will turn and stop well, make it that much better.
One of my uncles had a 442 when he was an older teen. I was a young teen at the time, he was adopted by my grands, thus the narrow age difference. I got to ride in the car soon after he completed the engine build, and that was one of the fastest accelerating cars I have been in, the fastest being a built Sunbeam Tiger. My uncle spent years on this car, and not a small amount of money. He lived in Corona California, and was a bit of a wild child, so he was usually tailed by the local police shortly after leaving his driveway. He had just made the decision to sell the car when he was t-boned at an intersection by someone who missed a red light. My uncle was not hurt, but the car was a loss. It was fun while he had it.
Love it. i drive my 68 pontiac with a 461 cubic inch motor every day. Nothing like the feel of an old real american car thats been updated a little and handles and stops great but hasnt been taken too far with gimmicks it doesn't need. Love that 60's muscle car interior
Jay wasn't the first one to hit those headers on the asphalt...
there was rust deep in one of those scrapes.
Jay you're truly a car guy .Classic muscle car are the life source of cars around the world. 💯
I love it when car guys talk to each other with enthusiasm about the specs and get so happy...
My dad had a gold one. Cops back in the day had a hard time keeping up.
Cops were always after my dad in his custom Chevelle SS too. He was a GM designer.
My Dad had a gold one as well. I turned 16 in 1969 and he used to let me drive it! Not sure what he was thinking, boy did I drive the snot out of it. It stood up to all the abuse though, a great car. I saw a gold 69 for sale at Barrett Jackson, it went for 34k. Kicking myself for not getting it. So many great memories
Jay definitely owes some headers.
no lol thos headers have bottomed out more than once...
Congrats on the beautiful Olds! My wife owned a 69 Olds 442 when I met and married her in 81. Grey with blue stripes and vinyl top just like this one. Absolutely loved that car and still miss it to this day. Actually kick myself for not being able to find a way to keep it. We were in the Army at the time and no way and no money to safely store it when we transferred to Germany. Really hated having to let it go, but...
Thank you Jay and Mr. Thriller! Great video and awesome ride.
Enjoyable episode. Nice car, Paul.
I had an Olds YEARS ago but it wasn't nearly as cool as this one. I miss having cars with an exhaust note that ballsy.
One of the few cars Jay has that I have actually driven. "Back in the day", avoid damp roads! Going sideways at 30 plus mph. No blood, no ticket. Now all they have to do is catch it on camera.
When I got back from Vietnam in 1969 , I bought a brand new 442 off of the showroom floor at the local Olds dealer. It was one of the best cars I ever owned! Had to sell it in 1972 when I had to go back to Vietnam!
at 10:35 he talks about doing a 180....the day after i got my 69 442, i went down a country road with my older brother. and at a stop sign i did a 90 degree left turn...my brother saw a ford maverick with a hood scoop drive by on the road we were turning left on...now mind you, i am one day older than 16 and so i punched it while trying to make that left..i ended up on the embankment on the other side of the road. my bro looks at me and says "i will drive us home." my buddies in high school called that car "the coffin". i turned 16 in 1985.
+roastbeefdinner the...?
Jay we know you replaced that header as soon as you were done filming ;-)
When I was working for a GM dealer here in New Brunswick, Canada back in 1973, just as the emissions stuff was coming out, I had just come back from the regional training center, a customer can in with a 72 Pontiac GTO Judge convertible with the 455 with a 4-barrel. carb, he was getting about 5 mpg, so I did the factory tune up, the service manager thought I was blowing up the car when I put the carb cleaner through it.. The owner picked it up on a Friday and showed up again on Monday, He was very happy to be getting 8 mpg. You would even take it out of the garage today. Really nice video, takes me back.
***** No, it's got a 598 cu. in. motor and 5 mpg is probably a good mileage. You have to remember back in 1972 before oil prices when to the moon up here gas was 25 cent an imperial gallon. Those were the days.
*****
750 horsepower has to come from somewhere. Hence 5 mpg.
Malibu Blue But the ride height is just a hair too low. Sure did a job on the headers.
Looks like the headers got whacked pretty hard!
Another informative fun video! The '69 was a good looking 4-4-2 with It's split grilles. Owned three of them years ago. Still have a '68 Hurst/Olds and a fully restored '72 4-4-2 convertible with a '70 W-30 equipped Toronado GT 455 Rocket. Thanks again Jay!
Really nicely done
Aw!? Get ya cheque book out Jay!!
this is a great episode Pauls a great guy love the stories well done again Jay
My grandma has a complete 1969 Oldsmobile cutlass 350 rocket convertible. It’s all original.
Wonderful car. Would have been nice to see a genuine Olds motor, but a 598 replacement isn't the end of the world!
@10:30 not much worst then a Sun visor that won't stay up! Lol
yup - on my 69 I just stripped off some insulation from a wire and slip it over the mounting area to snug it up (the end with the screws to the roof) - all good
In a world of turmoil, nothing like a couple of guy's hanging out in a muscle car! Thanks Jay and Paul.
I always love seeing Jay pass the "Sunland Blvd or the La Tuna Canyon Sign" especially when I can see it happen in person.
Can tell Jay got a bit worried about hurting the car around the 17min mark, just because he goes real quiet.
He's a real car guy! He got quiter for the rest of the ride.
Jay should have to pay for repair.
Jim Purl He probably did, he is incredibly wealthy after all.
Probably had one of his mechanics fix them.
That's what you get when you outfit a car with Hotchkis suspension. If it had chassisworks coilovers that wouldn't have happened. My car bottomed out all the time back when I had Hotchkis. And mine is almost 1000lbs lighter than that 442
I know there's a lot of folks here who are upset with Paul for putting a Chevy engine in his Olds, and I understand that. But remember- General Motors itself was swapping engines back and forth between divisions since the mid-late 1950s.
By the mid 70s to early 80s, GM's game of Musical Engines reached mind-boggling proportions. What Paul did engine-wise isn't much different from what the factory itself was doing a few years after this 442 was built.
Christopher O. You're kind of right and kind of wrong. The musical engine thing didn't really pick up steam till the mid to late 70s (76-on) By the 80's GM had settled on the "corporate" motors meaning they took the small block Chevy for V8's, the Buick V6 and usually a Chevy 4 banger for economy cars. In the era of this 442, however, your engine matched the brand of the car. Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick, Chevrolet and even Cadillac all had independent development sharing only minor engine accessories like alternators and power steering pumps. You weren't going to find a Chevy motor even by accident in any olds in 1969. For one thing the engine mounts and details like the BOP rear-ends and transmission bell housings were unique to non-Chevy GM applications. GM divisions operated more independently than they do now. These days the only thing unique about most cars is the badge. How many rebranded Toyotas or Mitsubishi's were labeled Chevy for example. No, people can do whatever they want to their cars and I while understand all too well just how hard it is to get parts for a 400 or 455 Olds motor, this car is more of a resto-mod built to drive and have fun. As such it's not much good as a historical reference outside of its body shape. That's what gets the purists upset about it.
Agreed on all counts.
The weirdest example I can think of is the '79-'81 Trans Am. When Pontiac ceased production of its own V8 engines, they started equipping leftover TAs with 403 Olds engines.
When I attended auto shop classes at el Camino College back in the late 80's, a classmate's father purchased a brand new 1987 Chevrolet Caprice Classic wagon. It came with a 307 Olds motor.
Another interesting one was the '89 ( ? ) Pontiac Trans Am Pace Car Edition with the 3.8 liter Buick turbo V6.
Christopher O. Yes, the Trans Ams from the late 70's to 81 had the some of the most varied engine options from multiple sources. The 400 Pontiac, 403 olds, 301 Pontiac (turbo to replace the 403) and in some years even a 305 chevy.
My first car was an 81 V6 Camaro and my friend also had an 81 Camaro with a V6 except that mine was a 229 Chevy and his was the 231 Buick motor. By the end of the 80's the GM corporate motor edict was firmly in place. The only real exception to all this corporate stuff was Cadillac when they had their Northstar V8's. and engines like those weird 4.1 liter variable displacement V8's Their down-level cars like the Cimarron shared running gear with it's GM stable mates like the Cavalier and the Firenza. I also remember the awful corporate V6's like the 173Ci (2.8) that showed up in everything from trucks to Firebirds. At least these days the corporate motors aren't so horrendous. You buy a GM car, even a Caddy and you're going to end up with and LSx V8 or a variant of the venerable Buick 3,8 (in the 90's became the 3800 series of V6's) and even some awesome 4 bangers with a few foreign engines for the econoboxes many of which are just rebadged Toyotas.
Of any engine he COULD'VE swapped it with, the Chevy is the closest.
the other thing too, is, if you want that amount of cubic inches and power, you likely aren't using an OEM block--probably a Dart block with relocated cam tunnel, Merlin heads with different valve angles, Scat or billet crank, Crower rods etc. So an engine in this class is probably about as "Chevy" as it is anything else. In the 1980's GM had an "olds" engine with "pontiac" heads for the pro stock and serious street racers.
Ooooooooo..........A muscle car. My favorite. Paul plays the guitar like a sexy beast!!!!! Fun stuff, thanks for posting.
I had a 1968 442, black with white stripes and white interior, four speed, burnt out cherry bombs, cutouts, and I would love to have it now! That was a LOT of car for a 17 year old boy and I burned the roads up with it. Sold it when I went into the US Air Force. One of many I'd love to have back! I'm a car guy and have had many. I always wanted a 1970 Chevelle SS, but never got it. I came across a nice 1971 and couldn't pass it up, so I currently have that one. If I had the money, I'd have a garage full...like you!
Those smashed headers don't look cheap!
Exhaust all the way out the back will keep you from smelling like unburnt fuel. The inside of the car too. Learned the hard way. No power loss.
Awesome Car
I know I am late to post, But Paul Jackson has a great eye for for making a fun car. Respect.
Paul Jackson Jr seems like a very down to earth Man , Very Nice Oldsmobile 442 .
As a Muscle car, the 442 never visually appealed to me. But I'd love to see Mr. Jackson's guitar collection.
Stephen Morgan, have your eyes checked.."never visually appealed to you"?! The 69 through 73 4-4-2's are some of the best Looking Muscle Cars of ALL TIME
That's why GM gave you the Chevelle SS, Pontiac GTO/Lemans/Tempest, and Buick Skylark Gran Sport! Pick the style you like! All basically the same vehicle.
I agree. The Olds was a squared off Chevelle. That being said, this car has been done well enough to overcome all that. I do like it in a way that I never would have thought.
Jay, did you replace his exhaust? Hope so.
Stunning musician, stunning car. And both SOUND awesome.
Musicians ALWAYS have cool cars. Get more of these guys on the show.
I hope you bought him another set of headers
It'll be fine
+Bill Garlitz the owner can buy as many headers as you can dream of. He doesnt need jay
All Car guys go to Heaven... God loves our Passion
Amen
His will be done.
Great job, Jay. Thanks for sharing your car with us, Paul.
My family sold Olds for many years. Love this video.
Sure hope jay fixed those headers he ruined wouldn't want the wife to go without a tv too!
Pfft, honestly, that was the car owner's fault. Who else is to blame for making the car undrivable on the street?
NafanyaZX maybe it's the street that is undriveable...
guguigugu Of course, it takes a certain type of road to bottom out. But stock cars come prepared for that. The rest of the traffic barely even notices it. Jay often takes the same route and this is the first time we've seen this happen.
NafanyaZX this would not happen on the autobahn :P
guguigugu Man kann nicht alles haben. Wir haben die Autobahn, sie haben den günstigen Sprit.
I think a set of big block springs are needed
From a different manufacturer
hahahaha
My dad's favourite car. He had to trade it in for a station wagon back in the 70s, but he never stopped talking about it. His was a golden brown.
Those old 442's were such sweet cars. Powerful, smooth, and sexy. '69 and '70 were probably the pinical years for quality at GM.
I get the "No replacement for displacement!" But weight, aerodynamics, and rolling resistance are also important factors.
I would wager Jay's Countach is more efficient.
Nostalgia and style negate weight, aerodynamics, and rolling resistance. If you care about aerodynamics don't drive a 50 year old car...
Don't let looks fool you, Countach's aren't aerodynamic (in the .040-.050 cd range) and could weigh as much as 3500+lbs depending on the model.
Pretty much equal to a GM A-body overall. Although i'd wager a A-body is probably more aerodynamic (mid - high .30 cd range maybe)
A 1990 Lexus ls400 is 2x as aerodynamic as a countache
Steven P Or drive a Tatra 87. LOL
Aerodynamics isn't much of a factor at modest city driving speeds. Great show, I love how Jay interacts with his guests, an he has great guests.
lol just fucked your headers up, sorry bout that
no thos headers have bottomes out more than once..
Just found your website, what a combination of Jazz and muscle cars. Never knew about Paul; but like his style and just bought Lay it Back from Itunes.
Lots of laughs and awesome car. Thanks for the video.
