Hey guys, I am not going to be using the set of Prelude strings that I tried in this video anymore (and they basically new) so I thought I could send it over to one of you! If you're interested just leave a comment under this message and I will pick one of you :) Also if you're interested in joining my Patreon Community, here is the link: www.patreon.com/estherabrami
To me it sounds like with the preludes you hear more of the strings, and less of the tone of the actual violin, its also less dynamic range it feels like. Very straightforward tone, but less depth, and not as full and complex as the kaplan vivos. Even in the recording theres a defined difference in the projection, and how it would cut through an orchestra as a soloist in its tonal characteristic. I'll have to give the Kaplans a try sometime soon! Going to my local violin shop as they are letting me try a bunch on my violin for free.
Woah. Just started playing a year ago. Never thought I would hear the difference as clear as day. Wonderful video. Prelude sounds more dull compared to kaplan. And much less sensitive to tone change which is suitable for beginner and less stressful for a starter 😂.
Yea, the player can make $100 strings sound crappy, I can take a $30 violin, $5000 and both sound crappy 🤣, but advancing violin buyer . Picked up an old Stainer yesterday with a nice high belly long f holes . I'll see how bad I can make it sound,😁🤓
The more expensive one sounds smoother; with more depth; but less about the strings and more about the player! Have fun in Beijing! You are as beautiful as your playing.
I'm just starting to learn violin, so I appreciate you making this video about prelude strings since they're the ones I went and bought as a newbie, I really can't hear a difference. You sound amazing throughout the video! 😊
Wow the difference was night and day. Thank you for taking the time to share! I personally use Dominants with a silver D and a Pirastro Gold E for my E string. I’ve not felt the need to change.

The 100$ one the sound is more intense. It's on the higher octave at the top! The 20$ one is lower resonating at the top! More suited for a dramatic effect that you do not want to overpower! Don't know if that came out right!
I was surprised how good the Prelude strings sounded. They are surprisingly good value. A very useful and detailed video for the violinist and good practical advice for the novice. I bet your room in Beijing is much larger than your room in Birmingham. Thanks for sharing.
Great video and much appreciated. I like prelude much for the value. This is a go-to-strings for students' violins as it is stable and last forever. By the way, when you use the kaplan, the damper was still in the violin When you used the prelude, the damper was taken away. This probably have narrowed down their gap.
Katherine Jones I agree with you. I had Pirastro Tonica strings on my violin and they were very metallic sounding. I used to play with my mute on all the time until I changed them for the Prelude strings. I love them
I own the prelude strings. they do just fine as i'm learning right now. sound good for what i'm doing. the prelude set produces a warmer tone. the kaplan strings i feel produce a crisper sharper tone. at that point i feel its personal preference on how you want your strings to amplify those sounds from the violin.
I currently use Peter Infeld strings combined with the Kaplan Vivo e string and I love it! It has such a clear and brilliant sound and really brings out the volume of my violin 😍
The Kaplan Stringer's definitely sound richer with a wider dynamic range. Personally I use Thomastick Titanium solo and very happy with them, they project really well and they maintain the quality of their sound up to 3 months on daily playing. I used to use Eva Pirazzi's but they don't last as long.
Hi Esther, I am not a professional, but I have been playing self-study for 4 years. I have been using the AMO Caplan strings for a while now and am very satisfied with that, but I also like to test other strings. My last purchase that I've been testing since last week is the Pirastro Passione that gives a rich warm sound. These have to be constantly tuned in the beginning, but otherwise they are not too bad. I just love a deep warm sound 😁💐😉
Hi, thank you very much for sharing your experiences! Thank to you I am trying to play with no shoulder rest, gradually. The result for now is that I lowered my shoulder rest while I use it, also because my chin rest has the right height from my collarbone to my chin. I feel less tension now in this way, so thank you! However, without shoulder rest shifting requires more training and there is the risk to develop tensions in the left hand, so one should be careful. As an amateur player from about five years, I recently started to search a good set of strings because I also changed my violin. It would make no sense to use a 100$ set of strings on a 400$ instrument, so I was using thomastik dominant, and they were doing their job. My new instrument really adds color by itself to the sound, so I am substituting my strings one by one with Larsen virtuoso. I am satisfied with them, I will see how much they last. I watched some good reviews also for the thomastik PI and for the larsen il cannone. They really seem to give a punch in the projection of the sound with richness of harmonics, but they're too expensive for my purposes, since I mainly practice with scales and sudies.
I like Prelude for value for the money. I'm a beginner and have no need for other expensive brands at this point, but that may change. Thank you for the demo. Inspiring!
Omg those Kaplan Vivo strings are amazing and you bring them to life Esther! I've been playing with Helicore for quite some time now and they go pretty well on my German antique violin
The only difference I heard was that the higher-dollar pro strings rang out more, and the cheaper strings sounded muffled. Nothing wrong with the sound of the cheaper strings though, but for soloing at Carnegie Hall, the bigger sound prevails. I'll bet there aren't too many beginners opting for pricier strings.
The Prelude G string was trying to be a cello string with all those vibration. My student violin's factory g string also does that. I personally like the cello effect, as a beginner, but it also requires very good bowing otherwise you get badly punished to all your teeth and bones. Also, tuning is difficult even with fine tuners.
I use Evah Pirazzi on my 18th century instrument with a Hill E which tends not to whistle. Dominants sound great on my 19th century instrument. It's always worth experimenting when you have good instruments and play to a high standard in order to get the sound that you want. The same set of strings will sound different on different instruments anyway. The cheaper strings are fine on entry level violins and are usually the best choice because of their stability and durability. They're also usually steel core which are favoured by fiddlers rather than classical violinists. An interesting video if not rather predictable in outcome. The most useful conclusion to be drawn from this is that the price is irrelevant.

Hi! I play violin for almost 6 years and my music school's teacher, few years ago, told me that I should use the "dominant" for G, D & A strings and, for E, I should use "Kaplan Vivo". Now I'm playing bach double violin concerto and I'm studing Kreutzer's Etudes and C. Flesch scales, too 😊(that are very difficult!😥). Greetings from Italy 🇮🇹(and sorry for my bad English...)!

Your playing is really lovely and I can tell that you’re actually improving even further! Please keep up the great work! 😊🧸✨🎻
I think it would have been a lot easier to tell the difference if you would have played a few seconds or so of a passage with one set of strings and then immediately went to the other violin with either the same exact passage or the next part if it sounds similar. It was impossible for me to listen to that much music and then compare different strings to something that happened at the beginning of what you were playing with the first set of strings.

Prelude was my last set of string, now i'm on evah pirazzi, for me it's the "same". The kaplan sound better, but like you said, as a beginner on studying violin, it's not really useful.
If it takes more of your effort to produce a sound, that would be a big difference that your audience would be hard put to distinguish. If you are in an apartment, one wonders if you have experienced upstairs neighbors pounding their floor! Also, instead of the used strings as a giveaway, perhaps an equivalent length of your own hair might engender a greater response...now there is a contest I very well might enter! An interesting post, but I think some concerti might have given a greater variance in what we heard from the differing strings.
I believe that cheap strings sound less nice, more metallic.. But you played so well that I couldn't tell the difference between the cheap and more expensive strings!
Hi Esther, thank you for the video. My ears are not trained well enough to distinguish an $80 difference so I would be happy to stay at the prelude level quite a while. I am interested too! Steve xxx
I am now in China Hunan resion, Changsha city and hear and see this video. It is so different sound color depending on the strings quality. But for biginner $20 string is much quality and different is very small. I think my opinion is same as you.
The Prelude sound good, but the Kaplan sound incredible. The Prelude will be perfect for learning, and practice. The Kaplan for concert quality performance, where the enormous tone will be appreciated ❤👍☺
Would there be a difference between your choice of strings for a traditional / classical ( Yamaha AV Series Braviol let us say ) and their electronic violins like the SV or. YEV series ). Being isolated in these COVID challenged times I am just beginning to teach myself how to play .
For me, I could hear a difference between the two sets of strings. While the Prelude provides a good quality for the beginning violinist, a professional, such as yourself would be able to hear and use the under tones that the Kappan provides.

Thanks for tour videos Esther,
How long the Kaplan strings lasts for you?
I am now in China Hunan resion, Changsha city and hear and see this video. It is so different sound color depending on the strings quality. But for biginner $20 string is much quality and different is very small. I think my opinion is same as you.
I’m not a violinist, but I could hear the Kaplan were more responsive than the Prelude. Very nice playing.
More of a “how good am I ? 20 or 100 I’m mint on both” than a comparison
4:14 this isn't supposed to be smooshed together is it?
The Prelude sound good, but the Kaplan sound incredible. The Prelude will be perfect for learning, and practice. The Kaplan for concert quality performance, where the enormous tone will be appreciated ❤👍☺
Love u & your music so much
Salut from Vietnam
the cheaper strings sound like if the 100$ strings had a mute on
Wonderful playing, but I can't for life of me tell any difference. Both sound wonderful.
La version Française it' s possible ? Merci .
How r u finding >$100 strings... Evah Perazzi in Canada is like 140
So bealtful
I'm just wondering how long are the both strigns can be used before need to replace?
Here in Mexico there are a violin strings that costs approx. 4 dollars named “Sonatina” hahaha, I can’t even imagine how do think they sounds like xD
What was the piece at 4:30?
I have Dominant strings but out of the two you used the Prelude was softer and more mellow; wife agrees!...The 100 had a very high annoying pitch
Who noticed that piece from Twosetviolin?
Nobody .. we heard that piece on the radio long before we ever heard of twoset. Who,,'s twoset ?
