  • In this video I'm setting up (and cleaning up) David's 1st guitar - the awesome Matsumoku-made Westone Thunder 1. This guitar was in tired and dusty condition and wouldn't stay in tune. In addition to that the switch and jack socket were broken so I replaced them. In doing some gentle fret levelling I was able to remove most of the historical fret wear down at the nut end but this was a by-product of the levelling rather than as an end in itself (It's my view that it's not worth exchanging fret metal for what is essentially cosmetic improvement on those lower frets).
    I soaked the grimy bridge components in oil and cleaned them up and checked everything else out before re-stringing, stretching the strings out and intonating them.

    Smashing informative vid. I've got a Thunder IIA and its the only electric guitar I've held onto over the past 40 years. Fenders, Gibsons and other "famous" brands have come and gone but none have been as versatile as my trusty old Westone with it's straight through neck. It's natural sustain is incredible!

    Awesome video and resource for any Westone or late Electra owner.. Thanks for your effort!

    It was my first guitar, which I still have. They’re beautiful guitars. Gibson scale, coil splitting, brass saddles and nut. Very versatile. I have a 1A, too.

    I've got the bass version, a Thunder 1-A, mine has an unbelievably beautiful grain in it, just the perfect part of the tree I guess, I've put pictures of it on the web and Westone sites and forums, asking if anyone else has a grain like mine, no takers yet, I'm starting to think it may be one of a kind, if not, at least a pretty rare one. Wish there was a way to upload a pic of it so your viewers could take me up on my question. Anyway, love your vids, been watching for years.

      @@patmckenna9887 See above link in my earlier comment - I've put them in a Facebook album on Reloved Guitars page so people here can click on it and see them. Beautiful grain. Wow. Even nicer than the Thunder I'm setting up here.

    I have aThunder Jet guitar since the 80s. It’s a lot plainer looking than this but still a great guitar.

    .....by the way, the switches on these guitars are notorious for breaking off, it took me months to hunt an original down for my Electra/Westone Futura.

    My 1A bought in 2006 for €80,- in a case.There was still transportfoil on the tuners and on two of the three brass nobs. My mouth fell open when i opend it up to change the dead batteries and there where two batteries with experationdate 1984. Luckely they never leaked. Must have been the originals. According to the serialnumber it was a 84 build. And with the mk45's

    Great that he has the brass knobs, still, though the mini toggle isn’t original. And it’s a Version 3, with the bird logo. Mine is a Version 2, though I have one of these, too. Great guitars.

      Yeah. They're deliciously weighty too!

      Sam Deeks Yes, the Thunders are quite heavy. But there’s the maple in the neck and the core of the body.

    What do you think of this idea.. I'm hoping to buy ons for under 100. Then try and remove enough oak to get it much lighter.. From 10 lb to 5!?.. I'm thinking the bass version... I have bright yellow planned... Chambered body action... Pushing the strength tolerance stopping before damage.. .. Your going to be upset

    • @SamDeeksRelovedGuitars
      @SamDeeksRelovedGuitars  Рік тому

      Chambering a solid already-made guitar will require putting a new top (or back) onto it... which will usually also require thinning down the body unless you want it to end up thicker than originally manufactured. The tricky part in any weight relieving exercise is removing weight progressively and test the balance before you put the top (or back) on and start the re-finishing job... Since many of these painted Westones were made of multiple pieces of wood in two or even more layers (!) to save money / use up offcuts then you might as well rout out space and put a solid top on the whole thing. Since you're going to paint the finished thing the timber you use for a top can be inexpensive and boring-looking - something like poplar even.

    Good to see you back..but what um what ever happened to the Blue Protone Tele Squier that you did for Russ?..I never did see the outcome

    • @SamDeeksRelovedGuitars
      @SamDeeksRelovedGuitars  4 роки тому

      Ah well. So.. .I fitted a new neck and sent the guitar back to Canada. He got it, loved it ... and I think I saw on his FB that it was stolen some time later. I re-fretted the old neck and found a Squier Standard Series Tele for a donor body and put the two together, drooling at the thought of keeping it for myself. Until Russ said "Hey, would you sell me that so I get my old neck back too?" And I couldn't turn him down so that ALSO went back to him :-D

      I think it's a poly gloss... but I can't be sure. It might be nitro but for its age I don't see any signs of nitro aging / checking etc (not that I'm any kind of expert in those matters) :-)
