Change a Dunlop Cry Baby Wah Pedal's Tone With Just a Screwdriver

- www.crosbyaudio.com Cry Baby's are known for their wide range of tone, but you may find the high end a bit too harsh. Learn how to easily change a Cry Baby wah pedal's tone with only a screwdriver in this video tutorial.
My ears needed this. The tone of my wah down has killed 5 dogs by suicide.
I had stopped using my Cry Baby Originial because the highs were just too harsh. This helped immensely...thanks!
scott cuttler I had no idea ither man, totally cool.
Agreed. And the bad part is that when you click it on it's in the highest position so it immediately goes to this nasty harsh sound like a dagger in your audience's ear.
Just a thought. Don't roll off highs or lows too much because if you turn the pot too much so that the pot "bottoms out" or hits one side before the full travel of the foot pedal, you can strip the parts or break something. It would be like trying to force a pot past 10 except that you are doing it with your feet and have access to a lot more pressure/torque
I did this mod to my 95q wah. It's fantastic! Plus I took off the two rubber pads under the toe end of the pedal. This allowed the toe down position to go further. Now my wah has a much wider range and a much bigger rocketing sweep.
I just did this to my Snarling Dogs Blues Bawl wah, and it sounds totally amazing!!!! The pot had quite a bit of sweep not being used. Now this thing wails and squawks like a mother! It has three wah settings, and now this pedal will cover just about any wah sound you could want. It's also true bypass with built in Blue Doo distortion that sounds really good for blues and rock. I just wanted to say thanks a lot for the tip. Great videos.
Thank you so much for this, you can't believe how it made a world of difference in the tone. The default range comes with harsh higs.
I was one of those kids who always took toys apart to see how they worked and I'm still the same. The first Wah I got I I did this immediately. You have people who keep things mint so it holds its resale value then you have people like me who change parts, do modifications. My guitars are for playing. Things aren't always made the way you want them.
Hey, it's Bryan Cranston and Jimmy Fallon at the same time!
Great video. Did this mod some days ago and sounds great. It sounded pretty good before but now that I reduced the amount of the high frequencies and transferred that space of movement to the lower side now I can use the lows more effectively and my crybaby has more of a creamy soft and balanced sound than the all out raw tone. The raw tone was nice but for the style of music that I use this pedal for the more controlled and round tone works better for me.
Had no idea that you can open your Wah pedal and change the tone. Wow pretty neat. YA learn something new everyday. I'll have to give it a go.
Had to thank you for this vid. My wah was for sale but now I'm loving it !
Thanks so much for sharing this tip! I've had a crybaby classic that's been sitting around for years because it sounded awful.... turns out it was just sweeping the wrong range of the potentiometer! Finally figured it out thanks to you guys!
that made my pedal sound good again...I had it back to far thanks
This works with Vox V847.. just done it with mine.. now im a happy man. Thanks for the tip!.
Cheers for this - my crybaby had actually lost some of its range after some transport damage knocked the bit attached to the gear off, I fixed that but had no idea how to get the range back until I saw this
So easy and I never knew. Thanks for the great and useful info.
very cool . . . just bought a gcb 95, was expecting great things, but nowhere near as impressed with it straight out of the box as I thought I would be, starting thinking maybe I should have got a VOX instead, or that I would have to do some complicated mod to it, but so far this easy fix seems to have worked quite the charm . . .so far so good !!!
That's awesome, thanks man. My favourite kind of mod - easy and effective.
Next up: How to change a Dunlop Cry Baby Wah Pedal's Tone With Just a Sledgehammer
Dead simple! Thanks for the tip, I fixed mine which had unproper excursion 👍
I changed my wife`s tone by hiring a lawyer - it`s not as cheap as a screw driver but it`s amazingly effective.... :-)
What is the stock preset, because I did this along time ago and want to change it back and don't remember where it is.
This is a great tip you get you out of a jam real quick, however its more of a temporary fix as what you have essentially done is shortened the range/sweep, I better option would be to replace the input capacitor.
Hi!
The potentiometer tapped in my pedal. You could help me out where to order this type of potentiometer?
Thanks
can you do this setup with the Cry Baby mini as well?
Oh Jesus thank you, didn't have a clue about this; I accidentally knocked the plastic loop from that rod when putting some grease on the pot, must have moved it in the process which changed the tone from stock settings, I was wondering why the sound suddenly got a bit less sharp!
Nice, thanks man.
I need some tech help with my Original CryBaby wah Gcb-95, It's not engaging, I'm using it on carpet when I bought it it worked great but through the years on use the small pad inside underside the pedal to turn on/off the push pot is worn. Is there replacement what could use to replace it. I'm not using a battery only a/c adapter a generic type specs are INPUT: 120v ac 60hz 5.2w OUTPUT: 12v dc 300ma. Could this ac adapter can be my other problem.
I just pulled out my cry baby and dusted it off, bought it in 1977, Jen model..still works, but the on/off button is noisy, may try this mode, just to bring the highs down a bit.
can you use this to make it sound like the slash signature wah pedal?
when i unboxed my cry baby, there was a piece of plastic on the bottom that you could only take off by unscrewing the feet ....does taking the plastic off affect warranty????
I like the way mine sounds so I'm leaving it be but, thank you for sharing! If I pick up a second hand beater in the future I will toy with this mod. It looks easy enough to reverse.
Does this work fur the Jimi Hendrix wah
My amplifier Mesa Lonestar 1x12 resonates with the Cry Baby Classic (with fasel inductor). I tried this but it doesn't help. Do you have any idea how to solve this? Please tell me what is possible. I spent all my money on this amp and now can't use wah wah :(
Does this works with ANY dunlop crybaby model?
I make this setup for every New pedal, vox or crybaby. Is a phsycal mod. The crybaby 535q can be adjusted with a toggle.
A demo of the sound difference would have been nice...Just to get an idea.
Pointless without a before and after demo.
2:15 - 2:25
Im using the 535 wah on bass..the low end drops out..i dont like the 105q..i have that pedal as well..anyone know any mods for the 535 to have a bit more low end?
Thanks bro, that's really amazing thanks a million appreciate that information ...
Works with the vox v847 too or it's just cry baby way?
Very cool. Had no idea you could do that!
Can this be done with Vox wahs??
This helped a lot, thanks!
my original Crybaby GCB 95 have a problem about his wyering
looks like the circuit parts of the wah' is just around $25 or less vs $200-plus when you buy it in store.
Can I do the same thing to a crybaby 95Q?
Great tip and great video...thanks for sharing this Cheers
Yup. Learned how to do this back in the 70's. I shouldn't have sold my old Crybaby :(
Awesome! Thank you will try it :)
It says the pedal is 68 bucks on your site. Its a brand new pedal? How much would shipping be to the state of utah? I tried to dry-run through checkout, but it never applied a shipping charge. I can pick this up for 80 bucks from guitar center with free shipping, but if I can really get it from you, new for 68 bucks I might seriously consider doing so.
So that little simple adjustment, is that basically what Jerry Cantrell did for Facelift and Dirt?
I recently ordered a modded wah pedal that has a knob that does this without having to open it up. Super excited
+Elijah Leighton Would that be some kind of vocal mod (with a "Q" knob)?
will this effect the warranty ?????
Thanks man!
HOw Can I change or Clean the pots in the wah of Slash? That cry baby has a lot of things
Beware!!! This mod indeed lowers the top frequency of the wah, but (due to a almost S-taper pot at the bottom) gives dead angle at the lowest frequency range. A proper method is changing capacitor in beetween 10nF (standard bright) to 22nF (dark, Jimmi Hendrix, Zaak Wylde).
+Zbyszek Olko which cap do you change? do you have a guide to that?
What I ran into was I took it apart, moved that plastic out of the way, turned the wheel, and put the lever back. What I didn't notice was that the pedal was in a different position than when I started (it was in my lap and not being controlled well). When reassembled, I got very very little wah effect. I then made the adjustments to fix it.
Great tip...Thanks very much.....DH
just one thing to consider is that this opperation can interfear with the bypass switch, being that it is at the end travel of the pedal sweep. unless you have wah in a looper lineup
The pedal still moves all the way back and forth, but the pot is just at a different starting position.
Awesome HACK!!! Already done to my Cry Baby!
Magic !!!! Thanks a lot
wow...My problem solved... thanks
The worst in this pedal is the bypass.
Sounds terrible when the effect is on with some overdrives...It gets too loud.
great tip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you......
I bought a wah pedal just now
I kinda wanna do this xD
Thank you...!
That's news to me. If only I could change my wife's tone with a screwdriver as well... :-)
My cry baby wha pedal makes a lot of noise when I plug it into my delux reverb amp what can be done to remedy this problem.
Alphonso Anderson first check your cables and power supply
contact cleaner on the pot inside it..
I thought for sure that was the dude from Mad TV at first.
did this to my cry baby and all it does now is a loud high pitch scream, kind of sounds like a siren when i turn the volume up, any idea what i did wrong?
You fucked up brother.
Take it to a tech.
Jackson Elmore Sure you didn't accidentally swap the input and output cables? What you're describing is exactly what happens when you have them plugged in backwards.
+Jackson Elmore Maybe you missed the part about just turning it one fourth of a turn? What did you do? Max it out?
Whatever you did,
UNDO IT!
Or maybe like Vincent said, you plugged the guitar and amp cables into the wrong holes on the pedal?
If you can't reverse whatever you did, I hope you took it straight to a PROFESSIONAL tech.
GOOD LUCK.
Hey dude, what ended up happening? Kinda wanna know the story now haha
Is it made for this to be accessed easily?
The design is so simple anyways, it just happened to be easy to access. Some of the wahs like the 535q cant be changed much
I did this but my pedal moves to freely and is unconformable to use as it's too flimsy. Any suggestions are welcomed
I put a shitload of rubber bands over the heel part of my wah so that it always wanted to be in the down position. Made playing it a lot more easier and less strain on my ankle. The bands broke after some time so I'm gonna look for some bungee cord or something like that. Hope this helps
Pigeon Crowe Thanks mate! I'll give it a go. Maybe hair bands would be a better option, cause I think bungee cord might be a bit too big. Anyway, great advice :-)
UPDATED: I didn't read your message properly and had a different mental image. Hair bands still might work, but yes, a bungee chord (or two) should do the trick.
Put a spring under the front end. The compression spring will last.Pigeon Crowe
+mrbsred1 tighten the nuts on the side of the pedal where it pivots.
thank you because of you i can use my wah pedal to the next level.. maybe more than kirk hammett !!!
thank you love from india
Wow, I was about to sell mine and buy another pedal. WTF, Dunlop? They way they set it up from the factory sounds nothing like the classic Crybaby tone. It's like if Gibson used some really bright capacitors on the Les Paul so they don't sound like a proper LP unless you know to go in and change it.
..Or you could just not push the pedal all the way down or up, depending on where the @2:20"that which is really bright" is located.
You must be the brains of this operation. You're a genius! Would have never thought of that...
Disraeli gears!! in the background \m/
Cool
I have hooded eyes too. MY BROTHER.
very good gg
why mess when it works perfectly???
If it ain't broke,fix it.
With just a screwdriver? You don't need hands or anything?
Very god!
- Esmeulon: Wah !! !! !!

Thanks for the video. But you should not mix yellow and white lights, get a nasty color.
:)
don't sould like slash.
Jimmy Fallon!
He looks so much like seth mcfarlane wtf!?!?
this seems a bit of a stupid mod to me... it's like cutting a ladder in half instead of just climbing half way up.
you are brilliant.
Seems you fell on your head.
I tried it and I broke it thx
JK just kidding
Didn't realise they looked so cheap and nasty on the inside, considering how much they cost that is. Could get cheap chinese jobbie from ebay and make the same adjustment lol
If you don’t want the highs, just buy a phaser
