Learn what to do about a black toenail in this informative video. Dr. Andrew Schneider, a Houston podiatrist with over 20 years of experience, provides valuable insights on the various causes of black toenails and offers guidance on remedies for immediate relief. By understanding the underlying causes and implementing preventive measures, you can effectively manage black toenails and maintain optimal foot health.
Black toenails can result from several factors, including injuries, fungal infections, underlying medical conditions, certain medications, and, rarely, melanoma. Identifying the cause is crucial in determining the appropriate treatment. While bruised toenails due to injuries can be managed with simple procedures to drain accumulated blood, fungal infections may require specific medications and ongoing care. In cases involving underlying medical conditions or medications, consulting a podiatrist is recommended to address the root cause and ensure comprehensive treatment.
To alleviate discomfort at home, soaking your foot in warm water mixed with Epsom salt can provide relief and reduce swelling. Additionally, wearing properly fitted shoes that allow sufficient toe room is essential for comfort and prevention. Using over-the-counter pain relievers can temporarily alleviate pain and swelling, but it's important to seek professional evaluation and treatment for long-term solutions.
Preventing future occurrences of black toenails involves practicing good toenail hygiene, such as trimming them straight across and avoiding cutting them too short or at an angle to prevent ingrown toenails. It's crucial to use clean tools and not share them with others to avoid infections. Choosing well-fitted shoes that provide ample toe space and using sport-specific footwear when engaging in physical activities are vital for foot protection. Maintaining clean and dry feet, changing socks regularly, and avoiding prolonged moisture exposure help prevent bacterial and fungal growth, reducing the risk of toenail infections.

I developed a black toenail after hiking about 4 months ago. There has never been pain or discomfort and the nail is not loose at all. Will the body re-absorb the blood at some point and clear it up?
