About the Ashikaga, I know 2 interesting stories:
The first one is about the reason why Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the 8th Muromachi shogun, wanted to retire his position. He was actually eager to govern Japan as the shogun and had good intentions. But his wife, Hino Tomiko and her family, would meddle with his job many times. Apparently, Hino clan wanted power too, and through Tomiko they saw his opportunity. But their intromision in Yoshimasa's matters wore him out of patience, and then, he said enough. So yeah, it was his wife who actually took his eagerness to do something as a shogun, and then he decided to retire. Coincidentally, after Yoshimasa appointed his brother as the next shogun, Hino Tomiko would give birth to Yoshihisa, Yoshimasa's son. Then, Hino clan would ask for help to Yamana Souzen in order to make Yoshihisa the next shogun instead of Yoshimi. In other words, the reason for the Ounin Rebelion and the subsequent 150-years Sengoku Era... was a henpecked husband losing his patience XD XD
The second story is about the last moments of Ashikaga Yoshiteru, the 13th Muromachi shogun. He was actually quite effective as a shogun, but also a master swordman, one of the best of the era. He was known as the Swordman Shogun because of that. Well, when Matsunaga Hisahide and the Miyoshi Triumvirate tried to get rid of Yoshiteru, he didn't go peacefully. He would take dozens of swords and plung them on the floor and walls of his palace. When Miyoshi and Hisahide's men pursued the Shogun inside his palace, well, Yoshiteru would take one plunged sword and fight against some of his pursuers and stab them, then grab the next sword and fight other pursuers and so on. It was EPIC. Sadly he was too tired and his pursuers were so many that he decided finally to commit seppuku. With better allies and circumstances, Yoshiteru could actually have suceeded in restoring power to the Ashikaga Shogunate.
In the crazy game Sengoku BASARA 4, Yoshiteru is depicted as a master of various weapons, and his main weapon is a shaku batton-shaped sort of swiss-knife that can turn into a sword, a spear and a bow. This game turns him into in an interesting composite character of Yoshiteru AND Yoshimasa, having actually created Sengoku Era just because Muromachi Era was boring and he wanted a challenge (yeah, it sounds crazy and epic). The reason why I'm talking about this incarnation, it's because his BASARA attack (something equivalent to the Musou ultimate in Samurai Warriors franchise) depict real Yoshiteru's last moments, but turned up to eleven: he throws his shaku to the air, then it rains WEAPONS on the ground: katanas, spears and more, and then he grabs and discards several of them, using them in impossible ways (3 swords in each hand, SHOOTING 5 KATANAS WITH A BOW, 4 spears in each hand, then using several spears tied one another as gigantic whips and then throwing them). That's a really cool depiction of Ashikaga Yoshiteru, if I may say.

Hate to spoil it to you but the kitsuregawa were descendant from the oyumi and koga ashikaga, which split off during the period of ashikaga takauji, ngl they were actually more interesting then the mainline ashikaga to some extent.

If you wondering what happened to the Kubo Ashikaga or the branch of the Ashikaga that stayed in Kanto region, they don't fare really well too. Their most notable feat during Sengoku jidai is being absolutely clattered alongside the Ogigayatsu&Yamanouchi Uesugi and the Mariyatsu, by the Hojo during Tsunashige and Ujiyasu Hojo's famous night ambush in Kawagoe castle. Before eventually being pitied by the Toyotomi as mentioned in the later part of the video.

He then expands his influence until he loses the first battle of konodai and dies. But his second son is grabbed by his musician and taken to safety where he becomes a retainer under the satomi. When hideyoshi invaded the Hojo. That son marched back into Oyumi and restored the post of the Oyumi Kubo, for like a couple months. He then marries his cousin ig, and thats how they formed the Kitsuregawa clan.
(If you ever play the Hojo clan in the 1934 Nobunaga's ambition SOI start date, you'll get a questline for the first battle of konodai. Yoshiaki will appear, and if you check the satomi in later start dates, you will notice yoshiaki's son amongst the Satomi Officers.)

Ah, the legendary Ashikaga clan, founded by Minamoto no Yoshiyasu, grandson of the great Minamoto no Yoshiie. Takauji actually has ties to the Uesugi clan as well since his father, Sadauji had a child(Takauji) with Uesugi Kiyoko, the daughter of Uesugi Yorishige (grandfather of Takauji), who, himself was son of the founder of the Uesugi clan, Uesugi Shigefusa.
I definitely think the Ashikaga Bakufu began to fall in power after the death of the 6th Shogun, Yoshinori.
After that, the bakufu relied on powerful allies entirely unlike the Tokugawa who had absolute sovereignty even on thier own without heavy reliance on Daimyo.
Thank you as always for this.

  • @chinny18

Just watched Kings and General's overview of Battle of Nagashino and I find that it wasn't as fully focused than The Shogunate's full episode of the battle plus he added the aftermath up until the Honnoji incident. Plus it added Yasuke as I notice the addition due to the sponsor of the episode.
The Shogunate's video on Yasuke is a must-watch if anyone wants to know about Yasuke.
This is a good overview of the Ashikaga clan. I would say that they're very fortunate that after their powers weakened during the Sengoku Jidai, they were focused on the expansion of the family. It's hard to judge which of the modern families have lines from the Ashikaga but there will be one.

Pretty sure it ended with the exile of Yoshiaki by Nobunaga due to the establishment of the Anti-nobunaga network, considering that Yoshiaki sent out written requests to Daimyo to go to war with Nobunaga although he did build a Shogunate while in exile.
He didn't officially resign from the role of Seii-taishogun until 1588, 15 years before Ieyasu would be awarded that position in 1603 which would be the beginning of the longest and strongest shogunate out of the 3 that ruled throughout history.
The real decline of the Bakufu started after the death of Yoshinori.

@@hanchiman perhaps but maybe it would've resulted in a longer period of war.
I will say, he did work as hard as possible to restore the power of the shogunate and the absolute authority of the Shogun. He mediated with such well respected and know Daimyo such as Date Harumune and Date Tanemune, Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Masatora (Kenshin), Shimazu Takahisa, Otomo Yoshishige(Sorin) and Mori Motonari.
Really well established Daimyo and one of the finest examples of Gekoku-jo
Plus he did give a part of his name to Daimyo such as Uesugi Terutora(Kenshin), Date Terumune, Ashikaga Teruuji and Mori Terumoto.
So he was respected that even Nobunaga and Kenshin travleld to Kyoto to see him while Otomo Yoshishige sent him rifles.
So in a sense, you are right. He was the last true Ashikaga Shogun who did care about the restoration of the shogunate and authority of the Shogun.
