As some have pointed out, the Later Hojo did live on into the Edo period but this was only done through an adopted, off-shoot branch, so I chose not to include them here. The fall of Odawara and the deaths of Ujimasa and later his son Ujinao effectively ended the Later Hojo family as we know it.
Ikr many thought all those branches just wouldve disappeared
The picture of the castle in this album cover, is it the same castle you use in your picture?
I thought it it was beautiful, but that's just me, I felt compelled to share. Sry...

The first hojo daimyo in the Edo period was Ujiyasu's fifth son though wasn't he?
@@sukitron5415 I believe his name is ujinori
The Later Hojo Clan had one of the longest living samurai of the Sengoku Jidai: Hojo Genan (1493-1589). Dude has seen it all.
lol i remember when i was playing nobunaga's ambition, and this dude was available in every time period XD
Ik right that guy was old as shit, he appeared on every nobunaga's ambition scenario.
@@neroatlas9121 feels like the game's all about him and ieyasu
I wonder what he would have said to Ujimasa if he would have been alive in 1590. Would he have tried to convince Ujimasa to submit to Hideyoshi or would he have advice to fight against Hideyoshi?
@@FinnishDragon he wouldve probs asked him to let him go for the diplomatic route.
My great grandfather was Masaichi Hojo, came on a boat from Hiroshima and after being naturalized in America the last name changed to Hojio. I am a link to this and Masaichi had a the family blade set but they would only let the tanto blade on the boat. Only me and my brother are the only Male Heirs from the 4th son of Masaichi Hojio. William Wallace Hojio
May the Hojo line grace the world for generations to come.
no way!
Sounds insane but me and my brother are some of the last American decent. The the last name was changed to Hojio and only exists here in Colorado and in parts of Wyoming

Ahhhh, The Zelda clan, I see
Great video as always
Hojo Ujitsuna's wife is from the original Hojo clan, so at least from Ujiyasu, the clan did have some original Hojo blood.
Going to Odawara is a treasure trove of history for those who love the Hojo! It was the catalyst for my oldest daughter's love of history. Learning about Soun and his sons. So amazing.
Ah
One of the most consistently successful clans of all of them in the history of Ancient Japan
Both early and later Hojo clans irrespective of links to each other
From the early Hojo clan being regents of the Minamoto Bakufu to the later Hojo established under Soun and 4 other successive Daimyo lords of Odawara in Sagami
My favorite and most notable out of them all being Ujiyasu who is very underrated in my opinion as a Daimyo
Yes he didn't seek out conquest of the country outside of Sagami but he did defend Odawara against Arguably two of the most formidable foes he could ever face
Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin
The Lion of Sagami is the most successful out of all them as well
You have to wonder what could have happened if the Lion of Sagami, the Tiger of Kai and the Dragon of Echigo formed a long-term anti-Oda alliance after the fall of the Imagawa. Might make things interesting for the rise of the Date as well.
Ah, excellent choice, Patreon army, both Hojo are quite interesting.
Shogunate (and whoever reads this), would you say the early Hojo, in relation to the kamakura shogunate, are similar to the heian Fujiwara in relation to the Imperial family?
I think that comparison works to some degree!
The Hōjō Invented the Triforce
If one will fix his heart in such a way and assist the world and his people, he will have the devotion of the men who see and hear him.
-Hojo Shigetoki
I've read in Japanese Wikipedia (Google translated of course ) That one of Ujimasa's brothers was friends with Ieyasu, and he spared said brother and gave land for the Hojo to rule, the son of said brother would even fight at Sekigahara, and so the Hojo ruled until the end of the Shogunate...
So probably Ujikuni or Ujiteru
Not surprised that if this is true then the Hojo lived on although nowhere near as powerful as they once were
Of course the Tokugawa and the Hojo were once related through marriage of course
@@thedragonofechigo7878 Ujinori 4th son of Ujiyasu.
Thank you! The Ikko-Ikki video is still being awaited~
My love for Hojo clan came from Samurai Warriors. In each new instalment colorful Hojo members introduced. Fuma Kotoro, Hojo Ujiyasu, Kai-Hime, Lady Hayakawa and lastly unique NPCs Hojo Tsunashige and Hojo Saburo. After I read their history I loved them more. Especially Siege of Kawagoe is an impressive feat. By the way when is famous ninja clans and mercenary clans? Like Hatori Hanzo, Fuma Kotoro and Saika Magoichi are famous figures as well.
I was just watching your earlier clan histories, great to see you're continuing this series! Just earned my sub
Thank you for these, your videos are one of a kind
As Hattori Hanzo of the Tokugawa clan, the later Hojo clan got Kotaro Fuma. Both of them were legendary ninja work with their specific clan. I have heard that Kotaro Fuma was very tall and big even though he was depicted as a nimble shinobi boy in Onimusha 2.
Finally, my favorite Sengoku Jidai clan
LETS GOOOOOO!!! More samurai clan history 😀😀
Thank you for your teachings ,this is an honour to hear about this clan
You're doing great work, mate
Hojo Ujiyasu The Chad.😎
The Lion of Sagami
Very underrated in my opinion due to other lords such as Shingen and Kenshin around at that time
This is very informative video as it fills in many aspects of both Hojo clans that I was aware of in the most superficial manner.
I always appreciate the artwork in the background
Thanks for sharing this kind of teachings it gives me a lot of ideas @AnggingFe
NHK did a special on the later Hojo clan and basically Shinkaro was indeed a very high ranking Ashikaga official to start and on their orders was sent out to the east (and obviously then formed a strong connection with the Imagawa). He was not, as some older sources imply, some random ronin who popped out of nowhere.
yeah i still remember there are two NHK shows like that covering Hojo Soun ( Ise Shinkuro ) like in 英雄たちの選択 ( Eiyuu Tachi no Sentaku ) and 歴史秘話ヒストリア ( Rekishi Hiwa Historia )
You could say that hojo takimasa started a clan that in Japan would have "high rule"!
nice
@@GoodBloodGames thanks
A new upload!!!
thank you for your video! i was looking for something to dive in the history of this clan and found your video. I was very lucky! May i ask you where you found your informations? I'd like to study more about the original Hojo forced to change their family name... Thank you, again!

I'd be curious on a video (or videos) delving into how samurai armies as well as ashigaru were mustered when war comes.
Hojo's biggest contribution to Japan was to make Kanto a thing.
My favorite SW clan since they decided to make Ujiyasu into Big Boss.
Curious to see what KT will do for them in the most likely to happen SW5 Extreme Legends, along with many others.
Ujiyasu's story in SW3 is one of my favorites. The stages can be hard and frustrating, but I'll admit the ending is wholesome.
@@TheDeisasori i think that given the obvious follow on is an Ieyasu/Hideyoshi focused game to tell 1582 to 1600 and that the scope of Hideyoshi's conquest requires most of the classic cast we will see a large number of them back.
Ujiyasu himself was dead by this point but he's far more influential a figure than his descendants so I hope they keep him as a stand in for the entire Hojo family.
Having played all of Nobunaga's route and the beginning of Mitsuhide's in 5 they went out of their way to make sure the classic battles of the 1550 to 1582 period were included even if nobunaga wasn't involved so I think KT largely knows that the audience expects in a given time period of the Era
Shit, i thought i was the only one who likes them because of video games. Thanks to SW2 which has 2 stages of Odawara Castle, i want to visit that castle.
When I was in elementary school I use to draw this symbol a lot and never knew it was a Hojo clan symbol
Thank you for this video. I am descended from the Hojo clan, on my mother’s side. We have very old original pieces of cloth with the clan symbol sewn into them on display at our house- every one of my friends thinks it’s a Zelda piece of art lol. But they’re always fascinated to hear the truth
hahaha yeah most zeldafans dont know this fact, XD its pretty cool
A bunch of your distant relatives in this comment section. You guys should talk it out.
My grandpa punched out a cop once.
I am American decent From great Grandfather Masaichi Hojo “Hojio” here in Colorado. In which he married a woman from Tennessee Maude Mays and her older family members fought for Dixie
Fascinating
Dude The Hojo are one of the most iconic and famous clans of all time
I didn’t think many knew about my family history
@@redhojo5102 @redhojo5102 Are you Japanese-American? Do you know any of your relatives in Japan? Especially in the Tokyo area? I want to know if you know of someone that I know.
Hello from New Zealand
There is a reason Nintendo uses that crest in one of their most successful games. Triforce.
But why that Hojo crest in the first place???
@@shanedoesyoutube8001 I want to say because to the Japanese that means success, money and power. Nintendo has that in the gaming industry. They were up a long time, then they went down with the Wii U a bit, now they are back up and are strong, similar to the Hojo. Those are some parallels I can see.
Are you sure it's not called "the Triforce" or "Golden Power" 😉
One of my distant family members is part of Zelda
As an aside, I hope in the next 5 years or so NHK does a taiga drama on either the Hojo or Shimazu... Neither family has gotten the attention they deserve.
but they did tokimune drama
I'd love to see a "generations" style taiga about the Later Hojo ending with their downfall, it could be epic.
@@fzie8634 Sorry for not clarifying... I was talking about the later Hojo. As you pointed out, the early Hojo have been represented and the 2022 taiga drama will be Kamakura-dono no 13-nin 鎌倉殿の13人 The 13 Lords of the Shogun about the start of the first Hojo clan (main character is Hōjō Yoshitoki)
can't wait for episode 53
At first seeing the symbol I thought this was gonna be about Zelda but then saw hojo and thought ah yes I know these guys from total war
LONG LIVE TO THE HÕJÕ CLAN
Im American decent last name changed to Hojio and only exists in Colorado and Wyoming in this form
Can u do a video about the rokakku clan
Can you do a Genpei war series?
Japanese Hylian Warriors, a perfect link to the past
Currently reading the book about them by Stephen Turnbull. Great read, adds a lot of flesh to their bones.
Was that way of the samurai 3 footage in the beginning??
Uesugi / Nagao next, please.
I find it kinda ironic the the (old) Hojo were descended from the Tiara and that they were the real power behind the Kamakura shogun’s.
ahh the Zelda clan ,
Oh dang we brought out the big boy today :p
Actually Ujimasa`s son was not executed but sent to Mt Koya with the agreement that in the future he would be a minor daimyo with around 11,000 koku (enough rice to feed a person for a year). Sadly he would die a year later of smallpox. However, somebody else would marry the widow and the Hojo clan (under new direction) was given its small plot of land
This is true about Ujinao, but Ujimasa had a number of other sons who did commit suicide after the fall of Odawara.
How about Morii clan next?
I honestly first saw this symbol known as the tri force in the legend of Zelda then I saw in civ 6 that it was from the Hojo clan after that the Hojo clan became my favorite!
For me it's the opposite, i've been playing games set in sengoku jidai (mostly Samurai Warriors and Sengoku Basara series) before i knew Zelda is a thing, and the first time i saw the symbol in a Zelda game i was like "wait, is that the Hojo symbol? What's it doing there?"
@@manusiabumi7673 that's interesting
I know the Hojo Clan became the Shikken (Regents) to the Shoguns but what does “Tokuso” mean? As the title changes sometime after the mongol invasions
Tokuso was just the title the clan head took.
Japanese wikipedia suggests it was a dharma name that the second clan head Yoshitoki used that became associated with his heirs as a signifier of the main branch of the clan.
Tokuso is the head of the Hojo family. Usually the Tokuso was also the Shikken, but they split it from 1256. Real power stayed with the Tokuso
Ah I see that explains, thanks guys
Uesugi clan (personal favorite clan)
Ideological reasons and choices (modern Budo thinking)
Not based on how successful they were such as the Toyotomi or Tokugawa strategies.
Ah, the clan I use if I don’t want to see a castle on a hill.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The Uesugi or the Ouchi should be next but that's just my suggestion
Uesugi clan explanation video next time please
The logo is used by the Fischer company too
I'm playing as the Hojo im Shogun 2
Uesugi When?
Or as some would call it, The Hojo Historia.
We want the sanada history and line and story there are the best clan who defeated the larger clans
i wonder how history would turns out if later hojo would just bent the knee to toyotomi
oh yes, the zelda clan
That crest could be viewed as 5 triangles, 4 triangles, 3 triangles, or 2 triangles
pedigree of Hojo Ujimasa's younger brother survived until the end of the Edo period.
YEEEEES, UJIYASU SAMA!!!!
Shorter triangle = shorter tenure in power?
A glorious name
Isn’t it magical how the shogun was supposed to, at least on paper, be the power behind the throne of the emperor, whilst the Hojo were the power behind the throne of the shogun.
Emperor: just there to look pretty
Shogun: so I'm in charge, right?
The Hojo: aww that's adorable
I wonder if this is where nintendo got the triforce symbol from
Why are their last names/family names pronounced first?
Tokimasa Hōjō (1138-1219) he did at age 77 that's a long life
Make a HISTORY OF TOKUGAWA CLAN
Ujiyasu is my favourite
Wait, Link was part of the Hojo clan?
i always assumed that the hojo were genji cause of their links to the minamoto. how did the taira lose the gempei war? geeze louise...
Benzaiten is more related to Hindu Goddess Saraswati, goddess of learning and wisdom
Wikipedia claims, with no cited source, that Ujitsuna was able to claim the Hojo name because he had a wife from the Hojo clan. Any truth to this?
That could be true, but I'd also give credit to the fact that the his family had claimed the ancestral Homeland of the Hojo and wished to capitalize the name.
三つ鱗をトライフォースとか言うなよな?(笑)
The hojo mon represents patrick from spongebob in patsu and open legged
What XDXDXD
a Clan that inspired the Tri Force for legend of zelda and FF7 secondary Antagonist
Wait, what??? Secondary antagonist in ff7???
Eu sou hojo.
Mais alguem aki??

Two things making the Hojo famous are their gold-hoarding castles and their shitty hand mortars.
I am resserreccting the Hojo Clan.
The Hojo clan, led by Haigo Hojima
Doesn't Hojo Clan survive to this day?
The Branch that was allowed to live on is not directly related to the Later Hojo.
Zelda lo key serve Hojo clan
My cat’s name is Hojo
The portraits of the Sengoku Daimyo look like Spaniards to me, overall great videos I just wish more authentic portraits were used.
Hojo Tokimune should have heeded the warnings of Nichiren Daishonin (1222-1282) who foresaw the Mongol invasion.
