I believe she wrote this for her son. You will love the Pretenders, she is a great song writer and performer! Love your Reactions! Peace, Love, Courage from Detroit!
Lead singer Chrissie Hynde was on campus at Kent State during the Kent State Massacre in 1970. The CSNY song Ohio is about that event. Try some of the Pretenders early hits: Middle of the Road, Brass In Pocket, or Back on the Chain Gang.
A friend of mine dated Chrissie while they were both at Kent State. He said they were just two broke college kids who couldn’t afford to go on expensive dates so they rode their bicycles around town. They’re still friends to this day and hang out whenever she comes home to Ohio.
Yeah! Chrissie, Chrissie, Chrissie! Jay and Amber know I’ve been begging for some Pretenders for almost a year now! Gotta play their early stuff. You’ll agree Chrissie is a rock goddess. Singer-songwriter extraordinaire. She especially rips it on “Precious,” but there are so many others: “Tattooed Love Boys,” “Stop Your Sobbing,” “Mystery Achievement” “Back On The Chain Gang.” So good!🔥🤙
Yes! I'm always a little taken aback by how frequently many fans list songs from the post James Honeyman Scott and Pete Farndon classic lineup era of the Pretenders first. I always suggest songs from those first two albums before suggesting any of their later music. But hey, what do I know.

The Pretenders are one of my favorite bands. You have to listen to their late 70s/ early 80s post-punk stuff that made them famous. "Precious", "Stop Your Sobbing", "Kid", "Tattooed Love Boys", "The Phone Call", "Middle of the Road", "Brass In Pocket", and more, so much to choose from
My husband, had 7 cancers, I stood by him. This song reminds me of how much I did, and took care of him while he fought it, lost his job, went to college, became a teacher, all while fighting cancer. I didn't quit on him, when he wanted me too.. I continued to stand by him, constantly. Keep up the good work guys!!

Can't add much to all the great comments here, just that Chrissie Hynde's stylistic range is jaw-dropping! The delicate plaintive "Kid", the vicious punk of "Precious", and the sweet pop of "Don't Get me Wrong". She's one of a kind, and I count myself lucky to have seen The Pretenders live back in the eighties. ❤️
The Mount Rushmore of Rock Chicks from my childhood is Janis, Stevie, Joan, and Chrissie. Middle of the Road, Don't Get Me Wrong, Back on the Chain Gang, all classics. A favorite Chrissie vocal that I listen to every Christmas is 10,000 Miles.
J & Amber, you'll love their "Brass In Pocket", "Mystery Achievement" and "Message Of Love"!!! Their debut self-titled album was outstanding!!! The first two songs listed are from the debut album
Im so happy you got to hear Chrissie and her band. This song is from the 90s but they started at the latest of the 70s, you need to listen to "brass in pocket" and "back on the chain gang"
So many songs... "Back on the Chain Gang" "Brass in Pocket" "My City Was Gone"... The band has been around since 1978. The one consistent member has always been Chrissie Hynde. The next longest member is the drummer Martin Chambers . He was there for the beginning of the band... left for about 7 years in the late 80s till the early 90s then came back. Chrissie is from Akron, Ohio, but moved to London in her early 20s. The song "My City Was Gone" was about her returning to her home town in Ohio and finding all the places she liked when she was young were gone.
My favorite song of the pretenders is " Brass in pocket " great song . One of thier best . This awesome lady is married to lead singer of the band Simple minds. Their biggest hit being "Don't you forget about me"
Beautiful love song, describing true, unconditional love. The song and video makes me think of helping somebody breaking addiction, going through the long night, dark night of the soul…
Chrissie Hynde would be on the female Mount Rushmore of rock and roll. The Pretenders' album, 'Learning to Crawl' is one of the best of the 1980's. 'Middle of the Road' 'My City Was Gone,' and 'Back on the Chain Gang' are the three biggest and best hits from that one but the whole album is phenomenal. Other songs by the band definitely worth a listen are their breakthrough hit 'Brass in Pocket,' 'Dont Get Me Wrong,' 'Time the Avenger,' and 'Message of Love.' So great to see you discover Chrissie. She's a remarkable talent and an important figure in rock history.

I saw them years ago here in E'ville and they played to a pitifully small crowd. They played as if the place was jammed - awesome concert. I felt proud of their professionalism.
When The Pretenders hit the scene in the late 70s, they were putting out bangers like Brass In Pocket, Middle of the Road, and Back On the Chain Gang. Like many rockers, they softened up later in their careers. That's what this song is...
Great band, Chrissie Hynde is awesome! You can really go down a rabbit hole of good songs from the Pretenders. Brass In Pocket, Back On The Chain Gang, My City Was Gone, I Go To Sleep, Bad Boys Get Spanked, Middle of The Road, Talk of The Town. So many great songs.
Love the Pretenders! this is one of their later hits. They were big in the 80's as well. Don't Get Me Wrong is a super fun song!!! and it is still on my playlist!!!
Y’all!! This was great! But, NOW you have to play their ‘Brass in Pocket’!! Which has been MY SONG every since I first heard it! I use to dial up and down the radio trying to find it! (That’s what we had to do back in the day)!
The Pretenders is really a late 70s-early 80s band who survived (with personnel changes) long-term. This is their main hit from the 90s. Try their early stuff: "Back on the Chain Gang"; "Brass in Pocket"; "Don't Get Me Wrong".
Chrissie Hynde is a living rock legend. The Pretenders are HER band. She formed it, she writes all the songs. She is the front woman, the heart, the soul, the embodiment of that band. You must watch the video for “Middle of the road”. YOU WILL BE SHOOK.
Christie Hynde and Ray Davies of The Kinks had a daughter. I can imagine what talent she has! Maybe time for some more Kinks as well. “Sunny Afternoon” is great!
Your comment made me go take a look, well turns out Chrissie also has a daughter with Simple Minds lead singer James Kerr, and Chrissie also dated John McEnroe...little Chrissie from Ohio certainly has a way with men it appears.
One of the legendary lady rockers Chrissie Hynde. This song was in 1994 but the band formed in 1978 . Their first hit came in 79 Brass in my Pocket needs to be your next reaction. Also Back on the Chain Gang
Super stoked to see you guys getting on some Pretenders. One of the best, most underrated bands of their time. Chrissie Hynde rules. Check out Brass In Pocket, Back On The Chain Gang, Tattooed Love Boys. Also make a note for when this year gets to the holiday season, they do a version of Blue Christmas that's excellent. Edit: And while I'm thinking about female led bands from the late 70's and 80's, you guys gots to check out a group called Siouxsie and the Banshees. Great picks for them: Scarecrow, Kiss Them For Me, Cities In Dust, Christine, The Killing Jar, and they do an absolutely phenomenal cover of The Beatles' song Dear Prudence.
I dedicated this song to my fiancé when he was alive and he actually cried and actually apologized for crying. I told him that I don’t want to be with a man who doesn’t cry. I miss him every day. Every day without him is a knife in my heart.
Thank you for FINALLY reacting to The Pretenders. Hopefully you will do more because they are capable of doing everything from hard rockers to pop hits to ballads like this one. Chrissie is one hellova singer/songwriter.
The range of The Pretenders songs hit many genres, starting with Punk, "Precious", Rock, "Mystery Achievement".. a bit of reggae, "Private Life", an overlooked gem.. pop Rock, "Back On the Chain Gang" and ballads like this and "Talk Of the Town".. also Chrissie did a song about her hometown in Ohio called " My City Was Gone".. All tunes are excellent.. Enjoy!.. Thanks.
Chrissie's voice is as you say powerful & a great front for the Pretenders. For more up-tempo tunes try "Message of Love" (my favourite to D.J. with), "Brass in Pocket" or "Don't Get me Wrong".
Dig this, I'm 71, lived alone for 20 yrs, I heard this song in 94 and made me cry, (in a good way). Did a search and found you two, reacting. Decided to share the time with you. Your love is inspiring. So I watched with you and still shed a little tear, but, (in a good way).🥲 Thanks PS had a crush on Chrissie since the 70's, The Pretenders are a Great Band.
It's about time you guys were getting into The Pretenders. Every time I hear Chrissie Hynde's voice I'm reminded of how great it actually is. I always say my two favorite female singers are Karen Carpenter and Patsy Cline. I have to rank Chrissie right up there with them. And so many great songs...Stop Your Sobbing, Kid, Brass in Pocket, Message of Love, Thin Line Between Love and Hate, 2000 Miles, Don't Get Me Wrong, and the song that made me a Pretenders fan in the first place...Back on the Chain Gang!!!
Thank you so much for finally doing Chrissy Hynde and the Pretenders! Her voice is so great! This is a ballad and a great one! But, Chrissy and the Pretenders can rock! Gotta do some more! Talk of the Town, Back on the chain gang, Brass in Pocket!
Love love love The Pretenders. "I'll Stand by You" was used as the backing track for the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) ads here in Australia. Bought tears to my eyes every time it played. Brass in Pocket and Back in the Chain Gang are among my favourites.
I am so happy you finally got to The Pretenders - I have been suggesting this group since you first started doing female Fridays. They were pioneers of the new wave/post punk movement starting in the late 70s. Chrissie is one of my favorite artists. She has released some solo work and continues to perform with The Pretenders. She also appeared on the TV show Friends and sang Smelly Cat with Phoebe. They do everything from soft ballads (I Go to Sleep, Show Me - two of my favorites) to real rockers (Mystery Achievement, I Hurt You) and even a Christmas song (2000 Miles). You really can't go wrong with The Pretenders - they have so many incredible songs.
This is legitimately one of my favorite songs all-time, and one of the most beautiful love songs I've ever heard. It's the story of utter devotion and unconditional love! And Chrissie Hynde is usually known for a rock star voice, but as you said, she can show a lovely gentle side as well. I've been waiting for you guys to hear it for the first time. Love the song, and loved the reaction!
I just found your channel and I love watching you guys react to songs to songs I loved as a kid. It’s such a joyful thing. I am shocked that you haven’t yet listened to any Tower of Power. What is Hip or Soul with a Capital S are good songs. Their horns are so tight it’s not even funny. Thanks again for these vids.
They can definitely rock. Check out "Middle of the Road" and "My City Was Gone". Both excellent songs. Another female rocker you should definitely check out is Sass Jordan.
I agree with everyone- you HAVE to listen to “Brass in Pocket” and “Middle of the Road.” She’s a great rocker- the best concert was Chrissy Hynde and Stevie Nicks! Freaking amazed they’re in their 70’s. The ladies can ROCK.
You guys found an amazing treasure. This song is just perfection....I wrote to you a while ago about reacting to the official Moments video by Canadian country band Emerson Drive. It is an amazingly beautiful story - with a very strong message. Watching the video is a must to get the full story - and the band is fantastic - with a great rabbit hole to go down.
You Struck Gold Guys. Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders are in a class of their own. Ya want some real Gold, listen to Ohio, Middle of the Road, I'm special...oh My My My, another Rabbit Hole Amber. You will Love the songs I just suggested, this is a very mellow song they did. Chrissie can also wail on the Guitar. Please, Please, Please do more of them on Female Friday Amber, Chrissie will have you Rocking in Your Socks Sister Girl. Another Band that never disappoints. I can't wait to see you react to Middle of the Road. I would never steer you the wrong way. Stay Blessed, cause You are Loved by Many. Much Love from California Kat ❤
I love Chrissie! Their first big hit was Brass in Pocket. Loved it. Another great one is The Middle of The Road! Theyve had a lot of great hits. She has she has performed with her original band, and after the death of one of the members and another left, she put together another band. Some of her best songs were recorded when she went out on her own, writing her own songs. Love her! ❤
As great as this is I much prefer their hard rockers like “Precious”, “The Wait” , “Middle Of The Road”. Chrissie rocks as hard as anyone in rock- male or female.
Chrissie is actually an American from Ohio, the rest of band is British. Many great songs from them from soft ballads to full on rockers. Their first hit is "Brass in Pocket" you guys would love it. Message of Love, and Middle of the Road are a couple of rockers.

Chrissy Hynde

"Brass in Pocket" was their first hit, but "Middle of the Road" is FIRE!

Pretenders are A+, and always love their 80s classics like MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, MESSAGE OF LOVE, and SHOW ME. Thanks for your review. Keep smiling 🤘 🙂
Yes she can rock. Try "Middle of the Road". I'm a 65 year old and I love sharing your musical discoveries.
I dedicated this song to my fiancé when he was alive and he actually cried and actually apologized for crying. I told him that I don’t want to be with a man who doesn’t cry. I miss him every day. Every day without him is a knife in my heart.
Omg. I dedicated this song to my fiancé too. He cried. A real man cries. He died while I did chest compressions 2 1/2 yrs ago. I lived him so!!!
Make no mistake, Pretenders rock. The first album is a killer rocker. "Tattooed Love Boys" "Precious" and "Kid" stand out
Thank you for FINALLY reacting to The Pretenders. Hopefully you will do more because they are capable of doing everything from hard rockers to pop hits to ballads like this one. Chrissie is one hellova singer/songwriter.
I do remember this song but most of what I like from them is late 70s and 80s songs Back on the Chain Gang, Brass in Pocket and Middle of the Road.
So glad you are checking out the Pretenders.
I saw them live a few years ago. They sound even better (I cried, lol). And she looks the same as she did in the 80’s, it’s amazing.
(I know this song is not from the 80’s.)
90's era Chrissie Hynde as a 40 year old was my dream girl, I was a teenager in the 90's.
Yeah, great pick Amber.
You really can't go wrong with The Pretenders... So many great songs to chose from..!
Enjoy!.. Thanks.
Hi, new subscriber here. Your Rock Lobster reaction grabbed me and I'm very excited to see what's to come. 😊
I agree that was such a fantastic reaction. Lol
Welcome to the RSR family 🙋🏻♀️
@@jeanstrickland2445 thank you. I'm going through all their reactions right now. Lol
@@isabeljimenez6067 your going to have fun their great 😊
Rock Lobster is my go to for a smile when needed. Welcome 🇨🇦
Chrissie's voice is as you say powerful & a great front for the Pretenders. For more up-tempo tunes try "Message of Love" (my favourite to D.J. with), "Brass in Pocket" or "Don't Get me Wrong".
Amazing band and singer. Fun fact Chrissy was on an episode of Friends as a singer at the coffee house.
I’ve always thought this was a masterpiece. I love her voice!
This is my favorite Pretenders song. Two big hits are Back On The Chain Gang and Brass In Pocket.
Ahh - Chrissie Hynde, Joan Jett's soul partner in music with a very cool voice!
Love Chrissie seen her so many times..she is one of the greats ...!!! and you two are the cutest couple.. Brass in pocket is my favorite.
Chrissie Hynde's has been my fav female rock voice for decades now - ever since first hearing brass in pocket. And I've heard many many others!
She has the voice of an angel. This so is the definition of powerful love.
The best song of the world ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
It's about time you guys were getting into The Pretenders.
She is a true orignal/"My City was Gone" Thin line Between Love and Hate" "2000 Miles"Back onthe china Gang" - Thank you,
Thank you so much for finally doing Chrissy Hynde and the Pretenders!
THANK YOU so very much!! My favorite band and singer
I would have thought you did their music before. You’re in for a treat. Great catalog of music to do much more.
Such a beautiful song, The Pretenders...Great Choice!!!
They can definitely rock. Check out "Middle of the Road" and "My City Was Gone". Both excellent songs. Another female rocker you should definitely check out is Sass Jordan.
I agree with everyone- you HAVE to listen to “Brass in Pocket” and “Middle of the Road.”
She’s a great rocker- the best concert was Chrissy Hynde and Stevie Nicks!
You guys really need to check out KD Lang. Her version of Hallelujah from the 2010 Olympics! Her vocals will send shivers...!
k.d. lang has the greatest voice I have ever heard live. Her version of Crying is amazing.
Love her! ❤
Brass in Pocket and My City was Gone are my 2 favorites. This one was okay, but definitely not a favorite outside of Chrissie's sound.
You hit it right on the head Amber! Love the pretenders. They made great music when the industry really needed it🌺✌️
As great as this is I much prefer their hard rockers like “Precious”, “The Wait” , “Middle Of The Road”. Chrissie rocks as hard as anyone in rock- male or female.
🎵 Not me baby I’m too Precious, fuck off. 🎶 💜
@@dharris8849 She’s the coolest.
Precious!! That's a banger!
The best and most beautiful song of all the times ❤❤❤❤❤❤
