Chrissie is actually an American from Ohio, the rest of band is British. Many great songs from them from soft ballads to full on rockers. Their first hit is "Brass in Pocket" you guys would love it. Message of Love, and Middle of the Road are a couple of rockers.
One of Akron's finest, along with Devo. And Joe Walsh lived right up the road. I recall reading an interview with Chrissie and she said that Akron was so depressing she would have died had she stayed there.
I'm was born in Lima, Ohio BTW...
One of her songs mentions Ohio.
“My City Was Gone”
Chrissy Hynde
Sexiest woman in rock and roll. Her voice makes me weak in the knees. I'm in my 50s and I've had a major crush on her since I was a teenager. 😍
"Brass in Pocket" was their first hit, but "Middle of the Road" is FIRE!
Yes! Middle of the Road!
@@shanedesselle2590 Actually their first hit was "Kid", a cover of a Kinks song.
🤚 Another vote for Middle of the Road
@@othermotte It was never released as a single in the USA. We don't recognize it as a single here.
@@othermotte Actually - Kid was written by Chrissie Hynde, and their first hit was Stop Your Sobbing (which was a cover of a Kinks song)
Chrissie Hynde. So happy you've gotten to some Pretenders! She's one of the original badass chicks of rock and roll. She's also a wicked guitar player AND she rocks the harmonica! Check out "Middle of the Road" to hear that. "Brass in Pocket", "Back On the Chain Gang", "My City Was Gone"... all are classics. She also duetted with UB40 to do a cover of Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe" that you would love.
ooooo... forgot about their version of I Got You Babe...so good!
Love Back On The Chain Gang. My favorite song by them
Their song "Mystery Achievement' is a good rocker. Love the bass riff.
Yes! I've been waiting for them to get to The Pretenders. Let's hope for many more from then.
And breakfast in bed with ub40
"Back On The Chain Gang" and "Don't Get Me Wrong" are other great options by The Pretenders. But my personal favorite is "Middle Of The Road".
My favorite is 2000 Miles.
Ditto!
Seconded! You gotta check out “Back on the Chain Gang” next, for sure. She also did the amazing song “Walk Away” with Cheap Trick.
Yes, Sally - Chain gang is so catchy.. as is "dont' get me wrong" -- I love Chrissie.. especially live.. b/c she sounds almost identical to recordings.. she can hit all those notes.. and with style!
I love, LOVE Message of Love. That tune will always be one of those songs that can completely change my mood, no matter what kind of day I’m having. My “dance it out” song ❤️
Oh man you have got to go down the Pretenders rabbit hole!! Brass in Pocket, Don't Get Me Wrong, Back On The Chain Gang, Message of Love, Middle of the Road, Talk of the Town, My City Was Gone, Kid. I believe she wrote this for her son. You will love the Pretenders, she is a great song writer and performer! Love your Reactions! Peace, Love, Courage from Detroit!
You listed Talk of the Town, twice. No harm, it is that good. 😉
👆👆👆THIS play list!
Hey Detroit! Battle Creek in the house! Del Shannon recorded Runaway here in Battle Creek. I don't think J and Amber have reacted to Del Shannon yet.
Awesome list !
My City was Gone
Chrissie and the Pretenders certainly CAN ROCK. But this is a beautiful ballad and you can hear the power and emotion in her unique voice
Another is 2,000 Miles... A beautiful song that's a holiday song but I love to listen to all year ❤️
I’ll stand by you!
I never listen to this song without tissues. I can usually hold it together until I hear "Nothing you confess could make me love you less" and then I lose it. That one line is something that everybody needs to hear.
Chrissie Hynde is a living rock legend. The Pretenders are HER band. She formed it, she writes all the songs. She is the front woman, the heart, the soul, the embodiment of that band.
You must watch the video for “Middle of the road”. YOU WILL BE SHOOK.
Chrissie Hynde has a very unique voice...The Pretenders have a couple of upbeat classics like "Back on the Chain Gang" and "Brass In Pocket".
"Let me come along cause even if you're wrong, I'll stand by you." 🥺 This song slays me every single time. It's beautiful. Chrissie is perfect. ❤
This slays my heart…my son just started a 5 year prison sentence and no matter what, even though he did wrong, I stand by him. 💕
Agreed
@@Dee-JayW I'm so sorry. Please stay strong for him and you. ❤
@@chrissywalls5902 im doing my best but it is the hardest thing I've ever dealt with. Grieving.
Another great song by the Pretenders is "Its A Thin Line Between Love And Hate."
My favorite song of the pretenders is " Brass in pocket " great song . One of thier best . This awesome lady is married to lead singer of the band Simple minds. Their biggest hit being "Don't you forget about me"
Please do their song "Back On The Chain Gang", Chrissie's voice hits emotionally deep on that song, i'm sure you guys will love it
The Pretenders are one of my favorite bands. You have to listen to their late 70s/ early 80s post-punk stuff that made them famous.
"Precious", "Stop Your Sobbing", "Kid", "Tattooed Love Boys", "The Phone Call", "Middle of the Road", "Brass In Pocket", and more, so much to choose from
Got into them when I was around 17. Now I’m 60 and still love that voice. Great concerts too!
Chrissie Hynde would be on the female Mount Rushmore of rock and roll. The Pretenders' album, 'Learning to Crawl' is one of the best of the 1980's. 'Middle of the Road' 'My City Was Gone,' and 'Back on the Chain Gang' are the three biggest and best hits from that one but the whole album is phenomenal.
Other songs by the band definitely worth a listen are their breakthrough hit 'Brass in Pocket,' 'Dont Get Me Wrong,' 'Time the Avenger,' and 'Message of Love.'
So great to see you discover Chrissie. She's a remarkable talent and an important figure in rock history.
Lead singer Chrissie Hynde was on campus at Kent State during the Kent State Massacre in 1970. The CSNY song Ohio is about that event.
Try some of the Pretenders early hits: Middle of the Road, Brass In Pocket, or Back on the Chain Gang.
1970
@@bradsullivan2495 oops, typo. thanks
Cole porters Chain gang great song
did not know that. . .
A friend of mine dated Chrissie while they were both at Kent State. He said they were just two broke college kids who couldn’t afford to go on expensive dates so they rode their bicycles around town. They’re still friends to this day and hang out whenever she comes home to Ohio.
The Pretenders are awesome! Throwing my hat into the ring, check out "Don't Get Me Wrong."
Dig this, I'm 71, lived alone for 20 yrs, I heard this song in 94 and made me cry, (in a good way). Did a search and found you two, reacting. Decided to share the time with you. Your love is inspiring. So I watched with you and still shed a little tear, but, (in a good way).🥲 Thanks PS had a crush on Chrissie since the 70's, The Pretenders are a Great Band.
I'm with the majority here, you guys will love BRASS IN POCKET.
Guys, save their song "2000 Miles" until Christmas. Best time to play it. 👍
Oh My I have been waiting for you to do Chrissie Hynde. She has an amazing voice. This song is perfect Mom song for their children. ❤🪅🎇
This song is whatever man needs to hear and experience have a woman by his side. They will not judge him and will stand by him through thick and thin. I am blessed to have a wife like that.
The Pretenders are a favorite. You can't go wrong with "Don't Get Me Wrong."
Yeah! Chrissie, Chrissie, Chrissie! Jay and Amber know I’ve been begging for some Pretenders for almost a year now! Gotta play their early stuff. You’ll agree Chrissie is a rock goddess. Singer-songwriter extraordinaire. She especially rips it on “Precious,” but there are so many others: “Tattooed Love Boys,” “Stop Your Sobbing,” “Mystery Achievement” “Back On The Chain Gang.” So good!🔥🤙
Yes! I'm always a little taken aback by how frequently many fans list songs from the post James Honeyman Scott and Pete Farndon classic lineup era of the Pretenders first.
I always suggest songs from those first two albums before suggesting any of their later music. But hey, what do I know.
Agree agree agree.... 💯%
@@HidingFromFate - What do you know? It seems you know more than the majority of the commentators here. I was scrolling through the comments and I was like "how young these people must be that they don't know any of their best material." Until I found Chris' comment. If I could I'd suggest Jay and Amber the whole first album!
@@module79l28 Agreed. I would put their first album on my desert island list of all time great albums. IMO, it still holds up well even today.
@@HidingFromFate Totally agree! People on here keep mentioning later songs as early Pretenders.
My dearest husband....gone 5 months...I'll stand by you ❣️❣️❣️
When there is nobody for you, you learn to be hard and strong
I use to sing this to my Grandbabies while I rocked them. When they got older I would send them this song to remind them that I will always be there with my arms open. No matter what they are going through
My husband, had 7 cancers, I stood by him. This song reminds me of how much I did, and took care of him while he fought it, lost his job, went to college, became a teacher, all while fighting cancer. I didn't quit on him, when he wanted me too.. I continued to stand by him, constantly.
Keep up the good work guys!!
7 cancers? woot?
@@NostalgicMem0ries yeah the last one took him 8 years ago.
@@TheKelinrose how is it possible to have 7 cancers? did he had seperate 7 or fought him off 7 times?
@@NostalgicMem0ries 7 different times from 2004 to 2015. the last 3 were within 6 months of one another. myxoid liposarcoma is aggressive cancer that the doctors believe was because he had a mutated gene from his dad who served in Vietnam and we can't claim it.
@@TheKelinrose oh now i get it, sry for you loss, cancer is tough battle, sadly everyone looses in the end, my grandpa died from lung cancer ;\
When your ready to hear the Pretenders rock I suggest
Middle of the road, My city was gone, Don’t get me wrong, Back on the chain gang, and Brass in pocket
Love Chrissie seen her so many times..she is one of the greats ...!!! and you two are the cutest couple.. Brass in pocket is my favorite.
One of the legendary lady rockers Chrissie Hynde. This song was in 1994 but the band formed in 1978 . Their first hit came in 79 Brass in my Pocket needs to be your next reaction. Also Back on the Chain Gang
Can't add much to all the great comments here, just that Chrissie Hynde's stylistic range is jaw-dropping! The delicate plaintive "Kid", the vicious punk of "Precious", and the sweet pop of "Don't Get me Wrong". She's one of a kind, and I count myself lucky to have seen The Pretenders live back in the eighties. ❤️
My husband and I, this is our song! We will play it at our vow renewal. He has been my rock during horrible illness. He pushes me to not give up.
The man in the video is a recovering drug addict - he relapses, maybe even ODs, and she's there for him - no questions asked.
People sometimes feel like they've done the unforgivable, and that's why they punish themselves, but she says "take me into your darkest hour, and I'll never desert you".
It's a VERY powerful statement, especially for people who feel like they've let everyone in their life down.
I really love the Album "Isle of View" the Pretenders with a Classical String section doing their Hits!
This is a rare ballad by Chrissie Hynde. She's mostly rock/punk. Tons of great songs: Prescious, Up the Neck, Tattooed Love Boys, Mystery Achievement,
Chrissie has such a recognised voice and a power with the warmth and gentle edge to it.
Other track you have to listen to are:-
Brass in Pocket
Precious
2000 Miles
Kid
Angel of the Morning
Don’t Get Me Wrong
Love to you all and keep the great work up too xxxxxx
The Pretenders "Back On The Chain Gang" & "Thin Line Between Love And Hate"
Im so happy you got to hear Chrissie and her band. This song is from the 90s but they started at the latest of the 70s, you need to listen to "brass in pocket" and "back on the chain gang"
So many songs... "Back on the Chain Gang" "Brass in Pocket" "My City Was Gone"... The band has been around since 1978. The one consistent member has always been Chrissie Hynde. The next longest member is the drummer Martin Chambers . He was there for the beginning of the band... left for about 7 years in the late 80s till the early 90s then came back. Chrissie is from Akron, Ohio, but moved to London in her early 20s. The song "My City Was Gone" was about her returning to her home town in Ohio and finding all the places she liked when she was young were gone.
Martin Chambers is one of the best drummers in the business.
Christie Hynde and Ray Davies of The Kinks had a daughter. I can imagine what talent she has! Maybe time for some more Kinks as well. “Sunny Afternoon” is great!
Your comment made me go take a look, well turns out Chrissie also has a daughter with Simple Minds lead singer James Kerr, and Chrissie also dated John McEnroe...little Chrissie from Ohio certainly has a way with men it appears.
I read or heard somewhere years ago that she was insecure about her voice but then she heard Bob Dylan sing and she decided that if he could sing, so could she. I'm very glad she did.
There is a big difference between someone who's born with a naturally very beautiful voice and someone who is less gifted but learns how to make the very best of the voice they have even if it's not a voice that would typically classified as beautiful. Those are the voices I love the best.
Dealing with depression !
Support is needed !
Love this song !
This song makes me cry! Its beautiful. Chrissy is amazing!
Brass In Pocket is what made me fall in love with Chrissie and the band back in the day.. her voice is that song still makes me so happy!!! 🥰
Not to mention she plays a really cool waitress in their badass video to this song.
🖤I LOVE that video.🖤 The 80s encapsulated. 😊
Chrissie sounds even more tender in person. Saw her in a small club venue about 20 yrs ago and every song was fire.
She’s one of the great ladies of rock
Make no mistake, Pretenders rock. The first album is a killer rocker. "Tattooed Love Boys" "Precious" and "Kid" stand out
This song always gets me right in the feels. There are few things on this earth that are more beautiful than unqualified love.
I’m 70…I have always wished I had had a woman who would devote her love and understanding to me the way she sang of in this song. I came close once…🥺
The Pretenders' first album is perfection! Not a bad song on it. Check out "Brass In Pocket", "Tattooed Love Boys", "Precious", or "Stop Your Sobbing" off of that one.
Ahh - Chrissie Hynde, Joan Jett's soul partner in music with a very cool voice!
FINALLY!❤️ Love her voice. “Brass in Pocket” should be next.
You Struck Gold Guys. Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders are in a class of their own. Ya want some real Gold, listen to Ohio, Middle of the Road, I'm special...oh My My My, another Rabbit Hole Amber. You will Love the songs I just suggested, this is a very mellow song they did. Chrissie can also wail on the Guitar. Please, Please, Please do more of them on Female Friday Amber, Chrissie will have you Rocking in Your Socks Sister Girl. Another Band that never disappoints. I can't wait to see you react to Middle of the Road. I would never steer you the wrong way. Stay Blessed, cause You are Loved by Many. Much Love from California Kat ❤
Oh wow you've now discovered The Pretenders. You're going to love these guys.
Thank you so much for playing something from Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders. She has an amazing voice. She's one of those singers that can reach right into your soul.
"Nothing you confess,
Can make me love you less."
"Take me into your darkest hour."
The song is about unconditional love.
Absolutely!!!
Shes my favorite rock chick. She's tough and vulnerable all at once. Mostly tough. 😂
My favorite female rocker of all-time. Heart would be #2.
Thank you for FINALLY reacting to The Pretenders. Hopefully you will do more because they are capable of doing everything from hard rockers to pop hits to ballads like this one. Chrissie is one hellova singer/songwriter.
Hi, new subscriber here. Your Rock Lobster reaction grabbed me and I'm very excited to see what's to come. 😊
I agree that was such a fantastic reaction. Lol

Rock Lobster is my go to for a smile when needed. Welcome 🇨🇦
This was the song myself and my wife chose for our first dance at our wedding. 10 years and a fair amount of dram later, it rings truer every day.
Pretenders, Rock since the 70s.
"Mystery Achievement" is an underrated gem from their first album.
That song doesn't get mentioned or suggested nearly enough. It's epic, or it's a banger, no...it's an epic banger!
yes!! My favorite Pretenders song!!
Yes she can rock. Try "Middle of the Road". I'm a 65 year old and I love sharing your musical discoveries.
The Pretenders are a great band. Her voice just fleshes every song and they have many great releases.
I. Adore. Chrissie. HYNDE! 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
What this ballad doesn't show is How. HARD. She. ROCKS. 🤘🤘🖤🖤🖤
Thank you so much for finally doing Chrissy Hynde and the Pretenders! Her voice is so great! This is a ballad and a great one! But, Chrissy and the Pretenders can rock! Gotta do some more! Talk of the Town, Back on the chain gang, Brass in Pocket!
J & Amber, you'll love their "Brass In Pocket", "Mystery Achievement" and "Message Of Love"!!! Their debut self-titled album was outstanding!!! The first two songs listed are from the debut album
I agree with you my favorite Pretenders song 💕
@@tonijohnson6642not sure which song, but thank you.
Don't forget "Middle of the Road."
MYSTERY ACHIEVEMENT is an outstanding super underrated song! It's fire!!!
The Mount Rushmore of Rock Chicks from my childhood is Janis, Stevie, Joan, and Chrissie. Middle of the Road, Don't Get Me Wrong, Back on the Chain Gang, all classics. A favorite Chrissie vocal that I listen to every Christmas is 10,000 Miles.
The first two Pretenders records are major cultural artifacts, like the Pantheon and stuff. No one had died yet in the band. Hope you get around to those someday - they're really worth it.
Love this! She's such a rocker too. You'll have to revisit The Pretenders. Thank you
I saw them years ago here in E'ville and they played to a pitifully small crowd. They played as if the place was jammed - awesome concert. I felt proud of their professionalism.
Chrissie and the Pretenders are one of my favorite bands and she just has such a great voice! Jay and Amber, you will have to check-out more of the Pretenders songs as you will be impressed.👍
Crying as usual. This song is so powerful.
Love the Pretenders! this is one of their later hits. They were big in the 80's as well. Don't Get Me Wrong is a super fun song!!! and it is still on my playlist!!!
Amazing band and singer. Fun fact Chrissy was on an episode of Friends as a singer at the coffee house.
"Hymn to Her" is an absolute mid-80s classic by them. You should take a look at that one :)
Chrissie's voice is as you say powerful & a great front for the Pretenders. For more up-tempo tunes try "Message of Love" (my favourite to D.J. with), "Brass in Pocket" or "Don't Get me Wrong".
Great band, Chrissie Hynde is awesome! You can really go down a rabbit hole of good songs from the Pretenders. Brass In Pocket, Back On The Chain Gang, My City Was Gone, I Go To Sleep, Bad Boys Get Spanked, Middle of The Road, Talk of The Town. So many great songs.
I saw them live a few years ago. They sound even better (I cried, lol). And she looks the same as she did in the 80’s, it’s amazing.
(I know this song is not from the 80’s.)
I am a die hard Metal Head but have always loved Chrissy's voice and the music of the Pretenders.
As an Uber driver I gave a ride to a couple members of the Pretenders. They had gotten to town the day before their concert so they were checking out the vintage record stores. I told them that one of my bands covered their song "Middle Of The Road" and I said that it was a fun one to play. One of the guys said, "it still is". It would also be a great reaction song.
I am so happy you finally got to The Pretenders - I have been suggesting this group since you first started doing female Fridays. They were pioneers of the new wave/post punk movement starting in the late 70s.
Chrissie is one of my favorite artists. She has released some solo work and continues to perform with The Pretenders. She also appeared on the TV show Friends and sang Smelly Cat with Phoebe.
They do everything from soft ballads (I Go to Sleep, Show Me - two of my favorites) to real rockers (Mystery Achievement, I Hurt You) and even a Christmas song (2000 Miles). You really can't go wrong with The Pretenders - they have so many incredible songs.
Super stoked to see you guys getting on some Pretenders. One of the best, most underrated bands of their time. Chrissie Hynde rules. Check out Brass In Pocket, Back On The Chain Gang, Tattooed Love Boys. Also make a note for when this year gets to the holiday season, they do a version of Blue Christmas that's excellent.
Edit: And while I'm thinking about female led bands from the late 70's and 80's, you guys gots to check out a group called Siouxsie and the Banshees. Great picks for them: Scarecrow, Kiss Them For Me, Cities In Dust, Christine, The Killing Jar, and they do an absolutely phenomenal cover of The Beatles' song Dear Prudence.
There's a great live version complete with orchestra and large choir, which is even more beautiful.
I'm still lobbying for Joni Mitchell singing "Woodstock" live in 1970. I guarantee you will live it!
This is legitimately one of my favorite songs all-time, and one of the most beautiful love songs I've ever heard. It's the story of utter devotion and unconditional love! And Chrissie Hynde is usually known for a rock star voice, but as you said, she can show a lovely gentle side as well. I've been waiting for you guys to hear it for the first time. Love the song, and loved the reaction!
It's about time you guys were getting into The Pretenders. Every time I hear Chrissie Hynde's voice I'm reminded of how great it actually is. I always say my two favorite female singers are Karen Carpenter and Patsy Cline. I have to rank Chrissie right up there with them. And so many great songs...Stop Your Sobbing, Kid, Brass in Pocket, Message of Love, Thin Line Between Love and Hate, 2000 Miles, Don't Get Me Wrong, and the song that made me a Pretenders fan in the first place...Back on the Chain Gang!!!
One of the most consequential bands of the 80's and 90's
Chrissie Hynde has an unbelievably beautiful and natural vibrato in her voice. My favorite Pretenders banger is "Mystery Achievement."
Chrissie Hynde's has been my fav female rock voice for decades now - ever since first hearing brass in pocket. And I've heard many many others!
Yeah, great pick Amber.
You really can't go wrong with The Pretenders... So many great songs to chose from..!
i feel that when she sings" and when when the night falls on you baby!"
90's era Chrissie Hynde as a 40 year old was my dream girl, I was a teenager in the 90's.
I do remember this song but most of what I like from them is late 70s and 80s songs Back on the Chain Gang, Brass in Pocket and Middle of the Road.
I’ve always thought this was a masterpiece. I love her voice!
Chrissie Hynde is one of the best rocker chicks if the 70’s and 80’s.
This song has made me cry for decades. Thank you for all you do!
