  • Critics predict "Get Out," written and directed by comedian Jordan Peele, will be a best picture contender at the Academy Awards this year. The movie, about a black man who meets his white girlfriend's family for the first time, is a thriller and social commentary on race relations in America. Peele also created and starred in the Emmy-winning series "Key & Peele" along with Keegan-Michael Key. Peele joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss what he felt was missing in the conversation about race and why he chose the horror genre to explore the topic of racism.

    He hit it when he said “ it’s uncomfortable being seen as a colour before being seen as a person, sometimes it’s subtle & harmless, but it can be also be horrible ...... as it’s not always easy to keep smiling through when it happens.... like some days you can be more sensitive & tired than others, hence feeling the horror or scared... scared and worried I’m just gonna blow up at a person...

      It's those little things that most white people don't understand when it comes to the everyday struggles of people of Black/Brown people. And it's so much more. Like the need to impress and be accepted by white people to the point of looking down at other races and your own, Only to discover, you are just a perfect acting token in their imperfect groups.

    • @Boccaccio1811
      @Boccaccio1811 6 років тому +7

      Wis Dom - what's the solution to this? And you're implying that in order to be accepted by white people, you need to look down on other races?

      Wis Dom - Ok, but I'm still wondering what the solution is... the more I read these comments, the more it seems like there's no way for black and white people to come together, and no desire to make that happen. Like races are cool with seeing each other as these weird unrelatable creatures who will never understand each other on a deeper level

    • @Wis_Dom
      @Wis_Dom 6 років тому +10

      +Boccaccio1812 Seriously, If you have to ask what the solution is, then you are just not trying to know. And trying to convince someone who isn't trying to know, is pointless.

    My favorite thing about this movie is the perfect depiction of the reality of the discomfort of being black among many white people. The horror parts were interesting, but this portrayal of what so many of us have had to experience is the key to this movie's success.

I do not think Jordan was trying to make any statement about white people in his movie, he was purely focused on what he has called "black fears".

    Being the only Asian person in my town, I can totally relate. When I meet a new white person they seem to always say something "Asian" relate which is totally out of place in general conversation, which I find super weird, they always seem to just see the colour and immediately feel the need to say something related to the race. White people do say weird things that people of minority never do, its just in their genes to be like this.

    Whether people want to admit it or not, America is slowly becoming more self-segregated and with movies like this, it only speeds up the process. I see no desire from the type of people in this video to move beyond race... instead it's a desire to amplify racial differences. Maybe you believe there's good reason for that... that's fine, but either way there's no denying that this mindset is pushing people of all races towards viewing themselves as inherently different from each other and the idea that we can never truly overcome these obstacles... and for the record, I would love for someone to prove me wrong

    • @arasant325
      @arasant325 6 років тому +6

      Well first I would like for you to prove me where you get the idea that these type of conversations are speeding up the process of segregation? I honestly believe it's opening the eyes to everyone of real world issues that need to be address to improve a nation. The fact that you are upset is good, it's a start. These things are upsetting, just make sure to treat those around with respect no matter of skin color and understand the real life problems people have to face everyday due racism.

    • @Boccaccio1811
      @Boccaccio1811 6 років тому +4

      arasani325 - well it depends what issues you're talking about. with most of these conversations, the general theme is that white people hold all the power in society and are actively oppressing everyone else. A lot of this is based on false information, such as this idea that white cops are constantly killing innocent black people because RACISM. A look at crime stats by race and stats on police shootings will show you that this is not the case. And just take a look at events like what happened at Evergreen State College and other west coast colleges, or the backlash to race baiting media like buzzfeed and MTV. They are in no way improving race relations.
      What it has done though is start conversations about race realism and the science behind it which more people are waking up to. (Look up how popular Jared Taylor has become in the past few months). This coupled with that fact that different races seem less and less willing to interact with each other positively makes me think people will probably just end up more segregated in the future.

      @Peruvianchick21 5 років тому +3

      Boccacio 1812 Totally agree with you. As a Latina who is indigenous, I see it a lot in my own racial group. Latino communities have mostly if not always, self segrated themselves from other races in America. I understand to a point that they are and/or want to be more comfortable around their own people when it comes to culture and language, but I really think that hurts them in the long run. It's not healthy that minorities self segregate themselves. The Civil Rights movement was about bringing people together and stop racial segregation in this nation. And now it's like we're bringing it back on our own terms. And you're right about blacks and may I add, brown people believing the false narrative of police killing them for no reason and that they will always be a target in society. I know for myself there are good and bad cops in every police force. The way of thinking by some black and brown people that we will never be good enough and always be kept down in society is simply false.

    I know they say this movie deals with deep rooted racism. How about the irony of racists needing a body of a race they feel superior to, to gain superior attributes. Most racists wouldn't want a drop of black blood in their body, and they took on the whole physical form. Envy and admiration come to mind here. However the callous disregard to a race for self preservation is where the racism comes in. I think a combination of that has a lot to do with our current political climate with respect to racial tensions.

All races are guilty of this it's true, but that doesn't suggest that human beings dislike each other by design lol, that's a bit of an exaggerated statement.
